GREAT THINGS TO DO ALONG THE BRIDGEWATER CANAL Salford’s historic Bridgewater Canal is being transformed along the five miles from Barton to Boothstown with over £5.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Salford City Council, Peel Holdings and other partners. The physical transformation of key heritage sites, including Worsley Delph and the remains of Barton Aqueduct, will start in 2015, however there are already lots of opportunities for local people to come along and find out what the Bridgewater Canal has to offer. Activities include Bat Walks, Fungi Forays and Roses and Castles art workshops, as well as regular health walks, bike rides and buggy walks. Find out more at www.salford.gov.uk/bcc

Duke’s Drive Country Park in Monton is a new visitor hub for the canal, with lots of new trails and walks and easy access to the canal towpath. A short walk from regular bus services stopping at Monton Green, and with over 50 new parking spaces conveniently located off Parrin Lane, the transformation of Duke’s Drive means it has never been easier to visit the Bridgewater Canal. Be actively involved in the transformation of the Canal. Becoming a Bridgewater Volunteer offers many opportunities to work outdoors on projects, get some exercise, learn new skills and meet new people as part of a great team. You can help: A children’s charity is looking for donations of good quality, second hand clothing for local children living in poverty.
Wood Street Mission helps children and families affected by poverty in Salford by giving them essential items like clothes, bedding and baby equipment, and helps break the cycle of poverty by encouraging engagement in education. The charity was recently awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - the charity equivalent of an MBE. “Stocks for our clothing project are currently low with new clients facing waits of up to 6 weeks,” says new chief executive Roseanne Sweeney. “The project provides vital support for families unable to make ends meet. Ideally we would like to help up to 50 families every week. Currently stock levels mean we are able to help about 30.”
10 LIVE IT LOCAL
Families are referred to Wood Street by their support worker, often a social worker or health visitor, who can vouch that they are unable to afford basic costs of living. “Some clients are here because of an adverse life event and will get back on their feet soon. Others unfortunately are trapped in a cycle of poverty and come back to us year after year. Donating to us is a very direct and tangible way of helping people in real need.” Last year the charity helped almost 7,000 children and 3,000 families - up more than a fifth on the previous year. Donating is simple; we can collect from your home. To arrange a collection call Wood Street Mission on 0161 834 3140. 26 Wood Street, Manchester, M3 3EF | www.woodstreetmission.org.uk

CRAIG MCNEIL: An Inspirational Young Individual aiming for the Olympics So you’re 17... School? Friends? Going out? How about getting up at 4.30am every day to train for 2½ hours before you go to school, then coming home to train more in the evening? This is the routine that young para-triathlete Craig McNeil puts himself through every day in his determined dream to compete, eventually at an Olympic level. Add to this the fact that Craig battles with adversity every day. Craig was born with a condition called Talipes, a deformity of the feet, which resulted in corrective operations as a baby, impaired physical development and difficulty with flexibility and movement. His condition makes training and competing extremely difficult, especially when running or using a bike. However, none of this hinders Craig or deters him from his ambition. As a member of Swim Trafford,
he is beginning to compete at a National level. Recently, Craig took part in the Great Manchester Swim and came a staggering 35th out of c.3,500 swimmers. He also finished 7th in the Great North Swim in Windermere. His cycling achievements are also incredible; completing the Manchester Cycle - 52 miles in 1 hour 45 minutes. Craig cannot get to the Olympics alone; he needs support and help to make his dreams come true. The Rotary Club of Manchester Trailblazers have taken on the task of supporting and sponsoring Craig on his journey. Business woman and Company Director, Marie Burgess from local Worsley company Tribune AVS Ltd, has made this her vocation through her role as a Rotarian to support and raise Craig’s profile. Read more about Craig on Trailblazers’ website www.mrtrailblazers.org or follow Craig at www.facebook.com/pages/Craig-McNeil/273863139396015

Aqua Natal Lessons with Puddle Ducks 20 years of experience working in the fitness industry it is one of the most enjoyable classes I have ever participated in!”
So, you’re having a baby! There is so much to organise for your new little bundle of joy but mums-to-be don’t forget to find some quality “me time” too... One way you could achieve this is by joining a Puddle Ducks Aqua Natal class. Mums-to-be (and post-natal Mums too) enjoy the perfect balance of relaxation, laughter and exercise during the weekly 45 minute sessions. Rebecca Hunt absolutely loves her weekly class. She said, “Everyone's in the same boat, feeling uncomfortable in their cosi(!) but you come away feeling lifted from the exercise, company and the giggles. It’s a fun, safe and effective way to exercise at any stage during pregnancy and even after
14 LIVE IT LOCAL
The Aqua Natal classes, which are accredited by the Royal College of Midwives Trust, take a holistic approach to mums’ physical and mental well-being, combining relaxation with cardiovascular exercise to help prepare the baby for labour in the soothing and cool comforts of the water. Through the use of gentle exercises, mums-to-be are introduced to movements in the water which can also be used with the baby after birth. There's a science behind it too! Exercise and relaxation release your body’s natural happy hormones, endorphins, which suppress pain and help you (and baby) feel calm – not only helpful in later pregnancy, but also really important during and after labour. Classes every Thursday evening at Fit City Worsley. For more info visit www.puddleducks.com or call the team on 01257 262622.

Ryan Giggs: Living Local Born in Cardiff, Ryan moved to Salford at the age of 7 and by 14 had signed for Manchester United. After an illustrious career playing football, he is now Assistant Manager at Manchester United and co-owner of George’s, Worsley. Which local team did you first start playing for and at what age were you scouted? I grew up in Pendlebury, Swinton and attended school at Grosvenor Road. I started playing for Deans when I was 10 or 11, having been scouted by Dennis Schofield (at the age of 8), when he was driving past the school one day on his milk float after work! If you weren’t a footballer, what would you be? I would have been a P.E. teacher. I love all sports, and now I'm a coach, I am really enjoying helping young players develop whilst passing on all my experiences. What is your favourite dish and drink at George's? I have many favourite dishes and drinks at George’s, but if I had to pick one, now that I've retired I can enjoy the George's Burger
and a glass of Paddock, the house red, without worrying too much about putting on weight! What do you most love about living in Worsley ? I love living in Worsley because it has always been so close to everything: Manchester city centre, the airport, the Trafford Centre and, of course, Old Trafford. I also love how picturesque it is with Worsley Green and Roe Green. Being a keen golfer we also have access to great golf courses; I am a member of Worsley Golf Course and also sometimes play at The Marriott.

SOFT AND ROMANTIC Proposals Bridalwear of Swinton share their insight into one of the hottest trends for 2015
Here at Proposals we pride ourselves at being right on trend with what’s happening in the wedding market. We have been in the business for 20 years and have seen most trends come and go. So what’s big for 2015? Well, pastels are back in a big way along with the vintage look - so brides in lace and bridesmaids in soft chiffons with vintage details of beads and pearls, or a touch of lace carries over from the bride. The main thing is the flowing lines - brides are wanting to keep it soft and romantic. There will always be room for your traditional satin wedding gown. Whatever your preference, here at Proposals we aim to produce just the right look for your individual wedding.

TRAINS, BOATS AND PLANES The Making of Manchester PART IV: PLANES Alliot Verdon Roe in the cockpit of his Roe III Triplane in September 1910
Since the Duke of Bridgewater pioneered the transport revolution over 250 years ago with his canal, this region has been at the forefront of innovation. We possess the world’s first passenger/freight railway, one of the world’s first ship canals - rivalling the Panama and the Suez - which made Manchester the nations fourth largest seaport. Now the next great step was to take to the air.
The Inventor - Alliott Verdon Roe Came the time, came the man - Edward Alliott Verdon Roe. The son of a doctor, Roe was born in 1877 at 262 Liverpool Road in Patricroft, Eccles, in a house which still stands unchanged to the present day. The companies which he founded and the famous aircraft which they built in his later years were to immortalise his name as A.V.Roe - AVRO. Roe was a little slow to find his destiny. He left home at 14 years of age to travel to Canada where he had been promised training as a surveyor, but found little promise in that field and spent a year doing casual work. Returning to Britain, he served an apprenticeship with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, tried to join the Royal Navy to further his interest in marine engineering, worked in dockyards before eventually joining the Merchant Navy, eventually becoming a 3rd Engineer on ships sailing to Africa. Long hours at sea with little to do between duties except watch seabirds in their flight however, inspired what became his “eureka” moment - he became fascinated by the possibility of building machines that could fly!
inventive genius flowered. In 1907 he won a competition sponsored by the “Daily Mail” with one of his designs and, with the £75 prize money (a considerable sum in those days) and the use of stables at his brother’s house in Putney, London, he began to build a full-size aeroplane of his winning design - the Roe 1 Biplane. This he successfully flew himself in July 1909 at Walthamstow Marshes, east of London - thus becoming the first Briton to fly the first British aircraft. A replica of this aircraft can be found in Man ch e s te r ’s Mu s e u m of Scie n ce an d Technology. It was the first of more than 100 AVRO aircraft designs to be produced in later years.
AVRO was founded In 1910, in partnership with his brother Humphrey, Roe founded the A.V.Roe Aircraft Company, with premises at Brownsfield Mill, Great Ancoats Street in Manchester - still standing today - which was the genesis of a company which was to grow to employ 40,000 people in factories in Hamble, Failsworth, Miles Platting, Newton Heath and Leeds. The first major commercial success for the Company was with the AVRO 504, sold as a training aircraft to the RAF, of which 8,340 were built and remained in service until 1933. Alliott in 1909
AVRO Lancaster Bomber
AVRO Vulcan
However, after WWI, demand for aircraft dropped dramatically and Roe’s Company ran into financial difficulties. He sold the majority of his shares to Crossley Motors (another famous Manchester company) in 1924 and then the Company moved to Woodford in Cheshire to more spacious premises, where successful aircraft continued to be produced.
so successful was the design that it later gave birth to the famous AVRO “Shackleton”, used for maritime reconnaissance and rescue until fairly recent times.
In 1928 AVRO was again sold, to Armstrong Siddeley Holdings and Roe sold his last shares in the Company he had created. However, so famed was his name and brand that the Company kept its identity as AVRO. Roe was knighted as Sir Edward Alliott Verdon-Roe and he moved to pastures new in Hampshire to form a new company, “Saunders Roe”, of which we shall hear more.
Over a service life of almost 30 years the “Vulcan” saw action only once - in bombing (with conventional weapons), the airstrip at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, during the Argentinian occupation. This disabled the airstrip for the duration of the War.
AVRO in Manchester and the north, moved on to produce a wide variety of aircraft in the 1930s. The “Tutor” was a trainer for the RAF, the “Anson” a twin-engined airliner for commercial traffic, but towards the end of the decade the dark clouds of war began to gather. The Company turned to the creation of military aircraft. The focus was on building large bombers, aircraft which could carry heavy payloads over, at that time, long ranges. From this ethos emerged three of the most effective and reliable of all aircraft of the war - the AVRO “Manchester”, the AVRO “Lincoln” and the iconic AVRO Lancaster. The “Lancaster” carried the largest bomb load of any aircraft in the conflict and was to become the “star” of the “Dam Busters” raid when dams in Germany were destroyed. More than 7,000 “Lancaster” aircraft were built and
Through various ownerships the AVRO Company’s final great achievement was the development of the delta-winged nuclear deterrent bomber, the “Vulcan”.
But more of our hero, the Eccles planemaker and pioneer aviator. Sir Alliott (he rarely used “Edward”) Verdon-Roe had founded Saunders Roe and, with this Company, had focussed on the building of flying boats – most notably the SARO “Walrus” during the war years for anti submarine operations, the maintenance of the American “Catalina” and a number of diverse projects, including the largest flying boat airliner of all - the Saunders Roe “Princess”. In later years they moved into helicopters with the “Skeeter ” and into the revolutionar y hovercraft. SARO (as they were generally known) built the first commercial hovercraft, the SRN 1 to Sir John Cockcroft’s design. Roe never stopped inventing. When he built his first ‘planes he was also building cars and motorcycles. One of his favourite inventions was a bicycle which he rode backwards, seated on the handlebars, facing to the rear! He died in 1958 at the age of 80 and is buried in Hamble in Hampshire where he lived for many years. Written by: John Kirwin LIVE IT LOCAL 29
