Lent, Holy Week and Easter 2016 A couple of weeks ago, we assembled all our staff, over two consecutive days, for team-building sessions over belated Christmas lunches. The events were both extremely encouraging, as we looked back on the highlights of 2015, and then forward into the challenges and opportunities for the coming year. In my review of last year, I took as a framework the six activities which make up our ‘mission statement’, which are

4

arranged around our logo, the Liverpool cross, in our Strategic Plan: heightening worship, multiplying congregations, promoting fairness, deepening discipleship, extending wellbeing and widening enterprise. On Sunday 24th January, I found myself doing something very similar, but in a very different setting. I had been invited to speak to the students of St Mellitus College on their residential weekend on the subject of ‘English Cathedrals: flagships in mission or wrecks

beyond salvation’. The students were all in training for ordained ministry, and it was a great privilege to be able to tell them about the scope and scale of opportunity we enjoy here in our Cathedral Church at present. I was able to tell them about Sepas and Zone 2, about Hope+ and Volition, about our TripAdvisor ranking and our shortlisting by VisitBritain for the 2015 ‘Major Tourist Attraction of the Year’ award. But I deliberately chose to finish by telling them about the 4000 or so people who attended worship with us between lunchtime on Christmas Eve and lunch time on Christmas Day: I finished with ‘heightening worship’ in order to emphasise that that remains our core activity: we are first and foremost a place of Christian worship. I have been enjoying these 40 days of ‘Christmas and Epiphany’, as we explore in more and more depth the meaning of the Lord’s incarnation: how the glory of God has been revealed in the face of Jesus Christ. On the 40th day after Christmas, on the Feast of Candlemas (February 3rd), our gaze turns from the crib to the cross. This year, Ash Wednesday will fall just one week later. We will begin our Lenten journey by considering again what it means for us to live as disciples of Jesus, who are called to ‘deny

ourselves, take up our cross and follow him’. I hope that you will join me in taking the opportunity in Lent for some spiritual stocktaking. It’s a helpful annual opportunity to invest afresh in our faith and our growth to maturity in Christ. The sermon series on the first four Sundays of Lent will, as usual, provide an opportunity to review our financial stewardship. The Lent lectures will be one of several opportunities, together with the Faith Academy, to invest in our learning. Holy Week and Easter will provide further rich opportunities to encounter God in our worship by the power of his Spirit. Following Christ on the way of the Cross we look forward to the great celebration of resurrection hope. My prayer is that our worship will continue to refresh us and renew us as a Cathedral community in the service of the One to whom this Cathedral is dedicated, so that we can more and more fulfil our vocation to make this ‘a safe place to do risky things in Christ’s service’. »» With every blessing Dean Pete, Dean of Liverpool

Far Out At Sea, a display of light and colour

We were treated to a beautiful showcase of light and colour as Kate Bayes’ stained glass exhibition came to the Cathedral from 23rd January - 7th February. ‘Far Out At Sea’ continued the themes from a previous exhibition, ‘Earth’s Human Shores’, which explored and illustrated themes arising from the upheavals and storms caused by a sudden uprooting from the familiar. Kate Bayes has been working as a stained glass artist for over twenty five years, making a variety of panels using lead and copper foil. Past work includes four panels for the St John’s Church in High Wycombe and many smaller windows installed in domestic houses. In 2014 Kate had an exhibition in London at 6

the Bossanyi Studio, Pinner, with the artist and print maker, Frances Carlile. Her focus is very much on interpreting landscape which she refines into essentially figurative but also abstract forms. Although she has used paint to enhance certain designs, she specialises in using the qualities inherent in antique blown glass and mostly works in a simple and unadorned fashion to construct lines and cuts which reveal the beauty of its colours and patterns. »» If you missed the exhibition, you can view Kate’s work online at https://glasslandscape. wordpress.com. If you would be interested in commissioning a window or panel please contact Kate Bayes directly: katharinebayes@gmail.com

Painting has always been my means to engage with the Divine

Stations of the Resurrection by artist Rob Floyd will be displayed in the Cathedral from 28th March to 15th May. The exhibition, commissioned by Liverpool Cathedral, is a continuation of the widely acclaimed ‘Stations of the Cross’ cycle created for Manchester Cathedral. We spoke to Rob ahead the exhibition, he said “The Stations of the Resurrection is far less well known or, indeed, established than the Stations of the Cross, perhaps this extra layer of mystery appealed. Certainly Liverpool Cathedral being the Cathedral Church of the Risen Christ made the idea of the project feel right.” The impressive art series has been created with the artist’s preferred medium, oil on canvas. Rob said “For me oil paint has a visceral, living, even mystical property which I feel has an incredible power and, indeed, life of its own.”

Of the subject matter, Rob continues “Painting has always been my means with which to attempt to engage with the Divine. From as early as I can remember I have always felt that the world is inherently full of meaning and I’m thankful that I have never been touched with that modern 'existential angst' of being all alone in a meaningless universe. Having the opportunity to directly engage in producing a Stations of the Cross cycle and now the Stations of the Resurrection has been an incredible opportunity and an amazing journey, both in terms of my artistic and spiritual development. I have been shown great kindness and support from the cathedral which has been quite overwhelming.” »» Read the full interview with Rob Floyd at www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk. 7

Love is in the air at the top of the tower

Even a wild and windy Friday in November can set the scene for romance as this Liverpool couple proved late last year. Matt Fedigan arranged an extraordinary birthday surprise for his girlfriend Maria Gillon by popping the question at the top of Liverpool Cathedral’s tower on Friday 20th November. The elements threatened to scupper the plan with high winds and rain forecast but with a little help from cathedral staff who were in on the surprise, the couple were treated to the slightly more sheltered Heritage Tour route up the tower. This exclusive 8

behind the scenes path took them up to the Corona Gallery and out onto the cathedral roof, climbing through restricted access areas whilst still being able to see the spectacular city vista. Matt got down on one knee whilst sheltered from the weather in the hidden turret area and proposed. We are delighted to report Maria said yes! The couple have been together four years and are both Merseyside locals. Matt, originally from Prenton is a charted building surveyor at Domec Facilities Management and Building Services and Maria from Childwall is a GP. They had their first date in Hannah’s bar on Leece St in the city centre

and then a meal in the Clove Hitch on Hope Street. With the city of Liverpool being so close to their hearts, the iconic structure of Liverpool Cathedral, a striking feature of the skyline, seemed the perfect place for Matt to choose to ask Maria the most important question of their lives. Matt said “It’s the best view over Liverpool. We came to the cathedral on Valentine’s Day a few years ago and had a wonderful time. It made sense to come back here.” The occasion will be forever marked by the addition of a personalised brick in the people’s path that reads: MATT AND MARIA ENGAGED HERE 2015 X The Cathedral’s People’s Path is steadily growing as locals and visitors alike have chosen to commemorate important occasions in a unique and significant way. Matt said “It reminded me of the locks that

were until recently put on the bridge in Paris. I liked the idea that you can put a mark down and it will be nice to be able to return to in the future.” Maria said “It was a complete shock. I thought we were just having a trip up the tower and when I saw the weather this morning I suggested to Matt that we leave it today but he said there was a special indoor tour we could take instead! I didn’t suspect a thing until we got to the secret turret where Matt got down on one knee.” After Maria said yes, the couple enjoyed a glass of champagne while taking in the view over the city before meeting up with family afterwards to share the good news. »» For more information on buying a brick in the Peoples Path or booking your place on a Heritage Tour please contact Tina Morris on 0151 702 7226 tina.morris@ liverpoolcathedral.org.uk

Liverpool Cathedral Sleepout - A 'Jammies and Jigsaws' adventure Why do a sleepout in the Cathedral?

Join in an experience to remember as Liverpool Cathedral, in partnership with The Whitechapel Centre, seek together to both maintain this beautiful building and help to end homelessness. A chance to wear your favourite jammies and bring a fun jigsaw. Sign-up now for the first ever Cathedral Sleepout! Lady Chapel, Saturday 2nd April 2016 7:30pm to Sunday 3rd April 6:00am. Meet Cath and Ed. They have registered to take part in the Cathedral Sleepout (under adult supervision) and they want to raise money to help The Whitechapel Centre to end homelessness and to help Liverpool Cathedral to maintain their roof. They are asking friends and family to sponsor them and hope to raise at least the requested minimum of £50 each. Can you beat them?

10

A sleepout gives people the opportunity to find out what it might be like to try and find somewhere to sleep in the city when you no longer have a warm cosy bed to sleep in. Although it doesn't compare to sleeping outside on the street, it can go some way towards understanding the difficult situation people face when finding themselves homeless. We also want you to have some fun so there will be a prize for the best 'den' - collect up some cardboard and see what you can build to sleep in. We hope to see you in your best pyjamas, with your favourite puzzle. If there is a group of you who want to take part, please do! The more the merrier! All we ask is that you have supervising adults who are over 18 that can come along with you. Cath and Ed are really excited that they will be some of the first ever people to sleep out in Liverpool Cathedral! You could be too!

What do I need to do before the event? Fundraise like crazy! We would like to challenge everyone taking part to try and raise £50 or more each. There will be a prize for the individual and the group who raises the most money. »» You can find a full timetable and further details on the Cathedral Sleepout website: liverpoolcathedralsleepout.org

EXPLORING THE TRUE MEANING OF LENT AND EASTER This year we repeat our successful Ashes to Go and Palms to Go initiative, a new way of bringing these ancient Lenten traditions to a wider public. Ashes to Go started in the United States as a way of taking part of the Ash Wednesday service out into the community as a public statement, an opportunity for individuals to meet for a short time with God and think about what Lent is all about. The idea is that the local vicar or priest, robed, would sit in a very public place and offer people an opportunity to say prayers and be anointed with ashes. It is not intended to replace the Ash Wednesday service, but is a way of offering the ritual to those that either would never come to or cannot make a church service. This year clergy will be available from 11am until 3pm on Wednesday 10th February in the main space of the Cathedral. Canon for Discipleship Paul Rattigan explained: “Each year we see about 50 people use this opportunity to take time out with God. Typically about half make the journey especially and the rest are visitors, pleasantly surprised to find us sitting there. We have many significant conversations and even some tears as people who hadn’t really engaged with God for a while realised they were precious in his sight. All the clergy find it very encouraging and a privilege to be able to offer this.” Palms to Go extends the concept into Holy Week, offering palms from the Palm Sunday

16

service for an hour each day in Holy Week. This year clergy will be available 12:30pm to 1:30pm from Monday 21st March to Thursday 24th March. Canon Paul added: “Each year more than 100 people take the opportunity and it is great to remind people of the true message of Easter in such a special week. Our prayer is that this year more people encounter God in this simple, creative way.” »» For further information check our website: www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk

Hope+ mark 3rd birthday by asking you to give hope during Lent

Hope+ marked its third birthday on the 14th of February. They have now provided over 25,000 hampers of food to those in need of it in the last three years, and that number is only expected to grow. Nadine Daniel, Hope+ Project Manager said, “I’m still surprised that my job has grown rather than diminished, despite the ‘good news’ about the economy. We are still seeing rising numbers that need our help.” As the third birthday milestone was hit only four days after the beginning of Lent, the opportunity to engage once again in the Church of England’s national ‘WashDay’ challenge has arisen. The tradition during Lent in years gone by has been to give something up as a selfsacrifice. Hope+ are asking you to turn this tradition on its head and are asking you to give rather than ‘give up’. You can give the gift of hope to people right here in our city by giving generously to Hope+ during Lent. WashDay involves washing things for our neighbours in emulation of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples on Maunday Thursday. Hope+ wants to provide every guest that visits with the supplies needed to wash themselves and their clothing. Nadine said “The idea is simply to enable us to provide every one of our guests with the means to keep themselves and their clothes

clean, using the example Jesus set in washing the feet of the disciples.” Each wash bag will contain basic items for personal hygiene which include the likes of soap and toothpaste, but also importantly, items to wash clothes. Men will receive razors and shaving cream in their bag and the women’s bag will contain sanitary wear. “We want to empower our guests by equipping them with these essentials” Nadine continues. “Often when people have little or no money they struggle to buy what most would regard as staple items for personal hygiene, such as toothpaste or shampoo. Items that will help contribute to a person regaining their dignity and self-respect.” Nadine added “We could not have reached our third birthday without the support of our volunteers and donors whose generosity constantly astounds me. For all your help and support, from all of us at Hope+, thank you!” »» To make a donation contact 0151 702 7237 or email: foodbank@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk

Were you brave enough TO take on the Indoor Abseil challenge? Following the success of our annual summer outdoor abseil, for the first time in January the Cathedral let thrillseekers and fundraisers loose inside our great space for an indoor abseil. Almost 200 people signed up over two days to take on a 120 foot free fall drop from the Corona gallery above the main space and raise thousands of pounds for the Cathedral Foundation and participants’ nominated charities. The cathedral's stunning interior provided a unique backdrop for the fundraiser. The second day was fully booked, including I’m A Celebrity winner Vicky Pattison and her costar from MTV’s Judge Geordie, Alex Cannon. The pair took on the task to raise cash and awareness for the Multiple System Atrophy Trust, in memory of Alex’s late mum Sharon, who died from the progressive neurological disorder. Vicky Pattison told the Liverpool Echo: “Alex’s mum had Multiple System Atrophy which is such a horrible disease. It makes me devastated that I never got to meet Sharon and she never got to live for longer. It doesn’t feel fair and I will do anything I can to fundraise and raise awareness.” Bishop of Liverpool Paul Bayes also took the plunge - he later told Cathedral Life: “Doing the cathedral abseil was an exhilarating experience. At first terrifying, but once I felt supported by the rope I was able to see the magnificent cathedral interior from a completely different angle. I would recommend this to anyone.”

Tina Morris, Fundraising Manager for the Liverpool Cathedral Foundation, said: “Thank you once again Merseyside for all your support with our first indoor abseil. The abseil helped us to raise much needed funds for the Cathedral Foundation. Excel in the grace of giving It comes as a constant surprise to people to discover that cCathedrals receive no statutory financial support: there is zero central government funding dedicated for the mission or the maintenance of English cathedrals. That means in England, a Chapter has to be alert and energetic in securing the financial stability of its Cathedral. In most places, this is done without the need to introduce entrance charges. In Liverpool, we do it well: through our wide range of enterprise activity (from shop, café, restaurant and car park, to tower visits, room hire, dinners and the rest), the work of our Welcomers in encouraging donations from visitors, the work of our Education Department and Fundraising Team, the wise use of investments, rental income from our properties, the help of our Friends’ Association and so on. But our congregations also have a role to play. In fact this is not just good ‘cathedral stewardship’. It is good ‘Christian stewardship’: quite apart from the Cathedral’s financial needs, there is the question Jesus puts to each of his followers, about their use of the resources with which God has blessed them. It is a basic Christian principle that sustained, committed financial giving is an act of both worship and discipleship. During Lent, as part of our spiritual stocktaking, we are again seeking an annual review of our Planned Giving Scheme. There will be a four week sermon series on this subject at the 10.30am Choral Eucharist, beginning on 14th February. Our Planned Giving Officer, Anne Rattigan, will be at most

services during this time to help answer any questions about how giving works at Liverpool Cathedral. The best way is to complete a Standing Order form which enables you to plan your giving and us to manage our finances effectively. Our green envelope system is in place as an alternative and of course, those who can should consider Gift Aid which brings the cathedral extra resources without costing you. Our aspiration is, in the words of St Paul, ‘to excel in the grace of giving’, as we excel in so many other areas of our life in this extraordinary place. »» For further details contact Anne Rattigan on 0151 702 7250 or email: 2024@liverpoolcathedral.org.uk 23

‘Mind-blowing’ evening of Cream Classics Three of the city’s cultural institutions come together on Saturday 16th April for a unique event. Global dance brand Cream will collaborate with musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to transform dance classics from the electronic music genre in the majestic surroundings of Liverpool Cathedral. At the heart of Liverpool’s cultural life, the award winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is the UK’s oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra, founded in 1840 by a group of Liverpool music-lovers and whose original ethos remains to this day - to promote the love of music and musicmaking. Sandra Parr, Liverpool Philharmonic’s Artistic Planning Director said: “We’ve worked with many of Liverpool’s great artists from across every style of music, though this will be the first time we’ve worked with Liverpool’s iconic, international club brand and it’s a collaboration that we’re really

looking forward to. The magnificent setting of Liverpool Cathedral, the fantastic sound of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra along with the essential Cream club mix is set to be a memorable night of great music in the city.” Eryl Parry, Director of Enterprise at Liverpool Cathedral said: “This event represents a unique collaboration of two internationally-renowned Liverpool artistic forces in this world-class venue. This extraordinary evening in this awesome space, is, put simply, a pretty mind-blowing prospect.” This event is the first of a series of special events Cream will be staging in their home city following the closure of their spiritual home Nation, which shut its doors for the final time on Boxing night 2015. »» This event is standing.
