WELCOME

DIARY

I’m delighted to present to you a wonderful new season of shows here at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. It’s a great honour for us to be hosting New Adventures and Re:Bourne’s extraordinary adaptation of Lord of the Flies as it will showcase some remarkable young talent from right here in the North West, and I’m sure you’ll be excited to learn for the first time that the acclaimed musical Wicked is visiting us next year.

NOVEMBER

It’s our aim to ensure that you have a wonderful experience every time you visit us, from the moment you book your ticket until you leave the theatre after a memorable performance. We have four great bars here at the Empire in the atrium, stalls, foyer and circle. Did you know, our Atrium bar opens half an hour before the main theatre doors open? That’s an hour and a half before the performance starts allowing you to relax, enjoy a drink and take in the great view through our floor to ceiling windows. There are often promotions available and you can even pre-order your interval drinks so that you don’t have to wait at the bar. Just ask one of our friendly bar staff for information. Why not visit our Little Darlings sweet cart for that extra special sweet treat? It’s located in our circle bar on the first floor and stocks lots of classic favourites. Alternatively we also sell a variety of luxury ice cream in the auditorium during the interval or you can visit our confectionary counter in the foyer to view our wide range of treats. We want to make theatre accessible at a price to suit every pocket. Now even more of your favourite shows are available at prices starting from just £10! On behalf of the whole team here at the Empire, I thank you for your continued support. We do hope to welcome you back very soon. Best Wishes, Diane Belding General Manager

Nutcracker

Journey back in time with English National Ballet to a frostcovered, gas-lit world and join Clara, her Nutcracker doll and the magician Drosselmeyer in this traditional, festive tale for all the family. On an enchanted Christmas Eve, under the heavy boughs of the candlelit tree, Clara battles with the Mouse King and falls in love with a handsome prince. As the air grows colder and snowflakes begin to fall, Clara and her valiant Nutcracker take a hot air balloon ride across the frost-dusted skyline to the glistening Land of Snow where her adventure really begins. In a world of Edwardian elegance, Nutcracker brings to life the eternally popular Tchaikovsky score featuring the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Waltz of the Flowers. This classical production is a magical, memorable and unmissable seasonal treat.

NCE TO THE MASSES LIKE NOBODY ELSE’ A

NEW ADVENTURES AND RE:BOURNE PRODUCTION

★★★★

‘A SUPERBLY VISCERAL VERSION OF GOLDING’S NOVEL. ASTONISHING, MEMORABLE’ THE GLASGOW HERALD

Based on the novel by WILLIAM GOLDING Music by TERRY DAVIES Sound design by PAUL GROOTHUIS Lighting design by CHRIS DAVEY Design by LEZ BROTHERSTON Choreographed by SCOTT AMBLER Adapted and Directed by MATTHEW BOURNE and SCOTT AMBLER

Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures has created some of the most successful shows of the last 25 years, including Swan Lake, Nutcracker! and the sell-out hit, Sleeping Beauty. Now the company unites a cast of New Adventures dancers with remarkable young talent from the North West, in an extraordinary adaptation of William Golding’s classic novel, Lord of the Flies choreographed by Olivier nominated Scott Ambler. As the schoolboys find themselves abandoned in a deserted theatre, Golding’s legendary characters are brought to life with raw energy, emotional intensity and breathtaking performances. Civilisation crumbles and the rulebook is forgotten as the story builds to an electrifying climax. Chilling, beautiful and hugely entertaining, Lord of the Flies will enthral Bourne fans and inspire a generation of new audiences.

THE MAGIC OF THEATRE DOESN’T END WHEN THE CURTAIN FALLS!

36

Photography by Brian Slater

Develop your dance skills by learning some nifty new dance moves inspired by smash hit musicals such as Singin’ in the Rain and Fame. Learn something new with an insightful workshop or talk by English National Ballet. The Ambassador Theatre Group is proud to support an extensive programme of creative learning activities for adults and young people at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. All programmes include activities such as workshops and participatory classes related to the outstanding musical and dance productions held at the Liverpool Empire Theatre, such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash hit musical Cats. Try your skills at creating your own Jukebox Musical inspired by Tonight’s the Night and Let it Be or discover the origins of musical theatre through a classic acclaimed musical such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Find out what pantomime is really all about and where it came from through our history of pantomime workshops which will explore the themes and characters from the swashbuckling world of Peter Pan.

The Creative Learning team also offer opportunities to go backstage to explore theatre making and see the Liverpool Empire Theatre as the stars do from the stage. The backstage tours explore the theatre and are led by a knowledgeable guide who will explain all about how the theatre has changed over the years, how the theatre accommodates large West End Productions like Disney’s The Lion King and Wicked, the opportunities within the industry and will also tell you a few ghost stories along the way. You can even take part in one of the exciting full scale community productions such as Stage Experience or the Youth Ballet Production. In 2014 the Creative Learning team will be working alongside New Adventures and Re:Bourne productions on the thrilling show Lord of the Flies. Young local dancers will have the chance to become part of the cast and work alongside experienced professional dancers to bring the show to life. In addition the Creative Learning team offer regular events exploring the options available to young people wishing to pursue a career in the theatre industry including work experience and student placements.

So whatever you are coming to see there are lots of high energy and engaging activities for you to get involved in which will give you a taste of the magical world of theatre. Some of the events are free to ticket holders but others will incur a small charge starting from as little as £4.50 per head. Details about these and other activities can be found on our website http://creativelearning.atg. co.uk/eventsworkshops/ liverpool-events/
