at Wavertree which can still be seen. Some houses had their own wells, later replaced by pumps. Water was drawn to the surface using the pump handle. These traditional pumps are still widely used in parts of the world with no mains supplies. The water tower in Woolton (pictured) was built at the end of the 19th century. It is part of a reservoir which stores water pumped from Lake Vyrnwy through underground pipes.

Designed by Dr George Deacon, the 1,170 ft long dam is a spectacular sight with its 25 arches and two towers. A road bridge runs along the top. The dam’s construction coincided with the height of the temperance movement and drinking fountains were provided as alternatives to alcohol. Some were inscribed with slogans such as Water is Best. In its early days Liverpool was supplied with water from wells. Perhaps the most famous was the Fall Well which stood on heathland near where the Royal Court Theatre now stands. A pub is named after the well where people would gossip and exchange news as they drew water.

Wining and Dining Link HALLOWE’EN – THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT!! It’s that time of year again – but Hallowe’en (or Eve of All Ha llows) means different things to different peopl saw it as a day to celebrate the saints and it was also known as All Saints Day. The Celts celebrated their dead in pagan rituals long before Christianity made it’s presence felt and, as with so many other festivities, the pagan tradition combined with the church tradition to give the day a flavour all of it’s own. Of course, what would Hallowe’en be without seasonal goodies such as roast chestnuts, toffee apples or, in Ireland, the traditional barmbrack (fruit bread). Added to these, the growing popularity of American treats such as pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie now makes Hallowe’en a truly multi-cultural affair, with fun for everyone. “Trick or treat” is a recent American import which arouses

mixed feelings but we, of course, have our old customs such as “duck-apple” or “apple-bobbing”, which can be great fun for all the family, and every home should have it’s own jack-olantern, of course – an eerily carved turnip or pumpkin with a candle inside it to complete the ghostly effect. This is believed to be a relic from the Celtic past when every home would light a candle to show the way home to spirits revisiting the earth for the day so the jack-o-lantern very much symbolises the ancient and modern aspects of this popular festivity. Teenagers love the horror films and fancy-dress parties which have now become so popular and there is another cross-cultural reference here with the United States giving back it’s influence on a tradition which crossed the Atlantic with the Scots and Irish who voyaged there in such large numbers in the 19th. century. Many people are surprised to learn, however, that costume parties and trick-or-treat did not appear until the mid 20th. century, even though they have now made Hallowe’en a considerable moneyspinner around the globe. So, however you choose to celebrate, we at The Link wish all our readers a very happy and enjoyable Hallowe’en!

Life was transformed for young people in Victorian times when school became compulsory although then, as now, standards could be very different. For centuries education had been haphazard, especially for the poor. The church played a part in religious education but formal schooling was largely the preserve of the rich. The great public schools were founded by wealthy people to educate their young. Poor children were lucky if they attended a church or charity school. Some went to dame schools run by local women at home. Growing prosperity brought changing attitudes. In early Victorian times more than half the population could not read or write. This was not always a problem in rural communities when most people worked on the land. However, as Britain led the world with the Industrial Revolution it was realised that people must be literate to ensure that they could take part fully in new working patterns. A start was made in 1833 when the Government began contributing to church schools. In 1870 all local

authorities had to build schools if none were provided by the church. School attendance for children between five and 13 was made compulsory in 1888 and free from 1891. The Balfour Act (1902) saw the start of state secondary education. The earliest reference to a West Derby school is in 1667 when a Free School was financed from property in Edge Lane. A later school was built in West Derby Village in 1825, next door to the Yeoman’s House. the pagan tradition combined with the church tradition to give the day a flavour all of it’s own. Of course, what would Hallowe’en be without seasonal goodies such as roast chestnuts, toffee apples or, in Ireland, the traditional barmbrack (fruit bread). This is believed to be a relic from the Celtic past when every home would light a candle to show the way home to spirits revisiting the earth for the day so the jack-o-lantern very

much symbolises the ancient and modern aspects of this popular festivity. Teenagers love the horror films and fancy-dress parties which have now become so popular and there is another cross-cultural reference here with the United States giving back it’s influence on a tradition which crossed the Atlantic with the Scots and Irish who voyaged there in such large numbers in the 19th. century. Many people are surprised to learn, however, that costume parties and trick-or-treat did not appear until the mid 20th. century, even though they have now made Hallowe’en a considerable moneyspinner around the globe. So, however you choose to celebrate, we at The Link wish all our readers a very happy and enjoyable
