This was the legendary land of Robin Hood. The whispering woods were charmed places, seemingly serene but where violence and death could suddenly strike. dled and the roads and lanes multiplied. Villages were settled and some grew into towns and towns into cities. Liverpool started as a manor farm on the banks of the Mersey, spreading out to engulf villages that were far older. The hunger for
