The unwelcome trespasser appeared at the stable door and Sal immediately sensed the danger facing her family. She barked ferociously and the interloper turned on her heels and fled, leaving Sal and her 10 puppies in peace. The incident at Aigburth Hall in 1829 was depicted by prolific Liverpool artist Charles Towne in his painting The Intruder (also known as Sal and Her Puppies). It was commissioned by wealthy merchant and dog lover Henry Harrison, who lived at the Hall. The story of the painting is told by Alex Kidson in his fascinating new book Earlier British Paintings in the Walker Art Gallery and Sudley House (Liverpool University Press / National Museums Liverpool, £35). The 357-page hardback is lavishly illustrated with fact-filled narratives about the well-known as well as more obscure works in the two popular galleries. Henry (1795 – 1871) settled in Liverpool in 1812 as a partner in Harrison, Arnold and Lathom at George’s Dock and later Cook Street. continued on page 3

The view through the stable door in Towne’s painting is a fanciful depiction of the banks of the Mersey at that time long before Otterspool Promenade was built. An inlet may depict the original Otters’ Pool, traces of which are still visible today – its sandstone cliffs adjacent to the path leading from Aigburth Vale to the shore. Henry left Aigburth to spend a period in Brazil. He returned to England and married Mary Rosina Sandbach, 20 years his junior, in 1835. They moved into a grand house in Aigburth called Holmefield, bringing up 11 children. Business setbacks forced Henry to downsize,

At first the travellers thought it was the wailing wind in the tree tops but the sound gradually grew louder and louder. Then there was the padding of dozens of feet in the snow. The man put his head out of the window and peered into the velvet darkness. The pack of wolves was getting closer – then one huge brute broke away from the rest and leapt at the coach. It ferociously clawed at the wheel but caught its paw and fell yelping into the snow. Other wolves, crazed with hunger, fell upon the injured beast, tearing it apart in a feeding frenzy. The man fell back into his seat and reassuringly hugged his wife and child. The forest was thinning and the road was widening – soon they reached the station and a train heading west to safety. It was 1871 and my great-

grandfather Count Julius Valdemart was leaving Silesia for the last time with his wife Elisabeth and threeyear-old son Ferdinand. The Count is pictured in the ceremonial uniform of the Valdemarts. His family had lived in their turreted fortress home in the Sudeten Mountains for hundreds of years. Silesia was rich in natural resources and the Valdemarts owned lucrative coal and copper mines as well as stone quarries. Silesia’s valuable resources attracted the attention of the Prussians and in 1742 most of the region was absorbed by the growing imperial power in the War of the Austrian Succession. The Valdemarts, however, were little affected at first in their remote mountain stronghold. The final straw came when Silesia became part of the German Empire with the formation of the German state. Julius and Elisabeth felt they must leave and start anew. Through family interests, they knew Liverpool quite
well – Julius had visited once or twice as part of his business dealings and now decided this was where they could flourish. In those days no passports were required and few questions asked – and a solid oak chest full of gold accompanied the Valdemarts to Liverpool. Julius, who was born in 1835, left six younger brothers in Silesia – Wenceslaus, Sigmund, Frederick, Henry, Charles and Gerhard. Once the family home was sold they also settled in Liverpool. Over the years our family amassed many strange tales from at home and abroad. Letters and documents form a unique archive of the unexpected. I have preserved and collated them here in the library at the family home in Liverpool, originally built by my great-grandfather, and will share them with you over coming months. • Read my first Strange Tale – The All-Seeing Eye – starting in next month’s Link.

WOODLANDS HOSPICE Sunday 16th September Woofs and Wellies Sponsored Dog Walk. We are very excited to be introducing this ‘new’ event for the Hospice this year following the success of other Hospices doing the event. The 5k route will be marshalled by stewards and will take in the lovely grounds of Croxteth Park including the Riding School. The
route will take approximately one hour depending on the pace of your dog. Registration is £5 per dog with each owner being asked to raise a minimum of £40 per dog sponsorship money. A certificate and goody bag will be given for each dog at the end of the walk. Advance registration is essential as entries on the day will NOT be allowed. There will be a maximum of 200 dogs being allowed to participate in this event with staggered start times between 11.00 a.m. and 12 noon. TOWN HALL OPEN FOR ALL Open to the public throughout August and beginning of September Guided tours available Free to enter but tours must be booked LIVERPOOL’S Town Hall will throw open its majestic doors to the public for the next three weeks starting from Monday 20 August. Members of the public can take in the beautiful surroundings of one of the finest surviving 18th century buildings for free. Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Sharon Sullivan said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to visit one of the city’s most stunning buildings. “Too often we overlook such gems that are right on our doorstep, but I hope we can encourage as many people as possible to come and visit us and see for themselves the history
and beauty of this magnificent building.” On entering the building visitors will be greeted by the splendid Flemish wooden fireplace from 1893. The entrance hall also features a floor made up of hand-painted tiles and showing the Liverpool ‘s Coat of Arms. And in an effort to record the city’s history the grand frescoes surrounding the fireplace depict important events including the granting of the Charter by King John in 1207. Follow in the footsteps of dignitaries such as Her Majesty the Queen and famous Liverpool sons, The Beatles or take time out to view the breathtaking ballrooms and charming chandeliers. Taking a walk around the Town Hall is free of charge and there is no need to book, but if you wish to go along on one of the guided tours (conducted by local Liverpool historian Steve Binns) there is a charge of £3.00 per person and advance booking is recommended. Concession (£1.50) for pensioners and under 17’s.
Tours will take place at 11.00am and 2.00pm on each of the days listed below, with the exception of the days when the venue closes at 2.00pm and no afternoon tours operate. There are also no tours in operation on the 9th September. The Town Hall will be open on the following dates: Monday 20th August (10.00 am – 4.00 pm)

A rare insight into a top Liverpool Divorce Lawyer continued from page 1 of approaching one can be nerve-wracking. However, Darren and his whole team want to dispel any myths about divorce lawyers being overly-tough. It is vital that anyone in the throes of relationship problems can find someone they can communicate with and trust implicitly. Talking to a solicitor for the first time is just the start of a legal journey, and Darren is very clear about what his role is. “My main job is to outline my client’s options, and over time this information will empower them to make many of their own decisions. As well as acting in my client’s interests, it is very important to present a full overview of the whole situation, so that expectations are clearly set out. Most of all, It is all about building a steady working relationship. My job means that I can help take some of the stress and worry out of a very trying situation. This doesn’t mean it is always dark times ahead. When a client has resolved their situation as fully as possible, they can hopefully move on to start a new and fulfilling future.” While many outside the law often see it as a male
dominated field, Matrimonial Law is one discipline that has a large proportion of female solicitors and barristers. This is something that Darren is used to working with and explains, “I am very comfortable being in this area of the law, in which women are very successful, and I find it is very progressive and balancing. However, I am always keen to point out that after my years of experience, my door is always open. I have become a good listener, and when it comes to hearing the details of a client’s life, I have a wealth of knowledge to draw from.” People who are thinking of starting divorce proceedings can be loathe to share the details of their private lives, and so the client-solicitor relationship has to be built on a lot of trust - and patience. Darren has dealt with so many varying cases over the years and has had his clients represented in both the High Court and the Court of Appeal : these cases only get so far, though, because they usually involve an interesting or different point of law and these more lengthy cases are very personal and individual to the people involved. However, Darren feels that the best way of working,
wherever possible, is when he is facing a divorce lawyer he both respects and admires. Sometimes, it is not always a case of going into battle but finding a solution that can work for both parties. As Darren suggests, “I enjoy working alongside esteemed solicitors in Liverpool - finding a workable way forward for both parties can be the leading, and least expensive way, for a positive outcome.” Gregory Abrams Davidson LLP believes an integrated approach best suits their clients. One of the most important tasks is to deal with financial issues such as shared assets, the family home and other properties, shares and investments. Some couples will have built up a substantial amount of assets and comprehensive legal advice will help smooth out the process of asset division. If the client is involved in a family business or partnership then that will also need attention. Darren works alongside experts in other areas of the firm such as company law, property and dispute resolution in order to sort out business matters quickly, effectively, and as painlessly as possible. January 2012, and finds this part of his job to be greatly rewarding. He explains, “I think the care of children is where someone in my role can make a huge difference. A lot of young people find themselves in a very difficult situation when there is a relationship breakdown or significant problem in the family, and doing what is best for their health and wellbeing in the future is absolutely paramount.” Children who need help and assistance come from every type of social and economic background and the main priority is to provide them with stability and support. Darren agrees that it is a very dynamic area of work and that his whole working week can change with a single phone call, but the chance to enrich a child’s life is part of the job he enjoys the most. He also hopes to see lots of younger solicitors getting involved in this area of the law, so that children can meet legal representatives they maybe feel they can relate to a little more easily. Legal Aid is an area of the law which is attracting much debate at the moment and it is a process which Darren is eager to support and defend. He tells us, “Legal Aid is vitally important - everyone should have equal access to

A NEW APPROACH TO LOSING WEIGHT by Paul Coshott
We first started a relationship with food when we were in our mother’s womb. We would tell our mum what kind of food we need to grow. This is why most mothers will have food cravings. The baby is telling its mum what it needs. As we get older we are told what we should and shouldn’t eat which in turn ruins our relationship with food. If we go back to our earlier years and eat what we feel like, over time we will eat a healthy diet, I believe. The key to success here is to eat when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied. When you have eaten too much your body will give off a sign that it has taken in too much, i.e. indigestion, stomach ache, burping, etc. Imagine you have a chart in your head. So, for example, 1 = so hungry you could eat a horse and 10 = so full you could burst: only try and eat when you are at a 5 and stop when you are at a 6. So you can eat anything provided you follow that guideline. The second point here is to drink plenty of water. When you go into dehydration mode your body may give off a signal that it is thirsty and this can get misinterpreted for being hungry. Vital organs like the liver, brain etc. need water so you should always make sure you are hydrated. The best way to do this is to check your urine once or twice throughout the day to see how clear it is. The clearer it is, the more hydrated you are. My third point here is to think about what to achieve. As you are seeing yourself achieving this new goal, ask yourself : ‘why am I doing this?’, then ask yourself: ‘what do I need to do to achieve x?’ Finally when you have a moment to relax, visualise yourself going into a cinema, “sit at the back row” and watch a film about yourself, but fitter and slimmer and with new confidence. Watch the film back and forth a few times. When you’re ready, in your mind enter the film and live the experience of feeling fitter, slimmer and more confident. If there is any sound in the film, turn it up. If there are any feelings, spread them around your body. Really try and get in touch with the feelings your new weight and fitness give you. This exercise will sharpen your modalities towards your outcome and will help you become more motivated towards your goal. Important points: • Use a smaller plate • Chew your food at least 20 times • Start seeing yourself fitter and slimmer • Your imagination is stronger than your will. Dog of the Month
Bruno is a handsome and friendly eight year old Black and Grey Cocker Spaniel at Dogs Trust Merseyside. He came to the rehoming centre from the dog warden who brought him in as his family didn’t want him anymore. Bruno has got cataracts which restrict his vision, but he is currently undergoing tests at the centre to determine whether this is operable. Despite his eyesight problems Bruno is bouncy and full of energy! However he does need a lot of human company and gets very distressed when left alone. He therefore needs to be rehomed with someone who is at home a lot of the time. Bruno can be rehomed with children aged over eight but not with cats. The rehoming centre is also currently running desperately low on stocks of tinned dog food, so is appealing to readers for any tins they can spare.
