WHAT’S INSIDE

DEATH AT THE PRIORY

STRANGE TALES

by Stephen Guy

The baronet became increasingly annoyed as he heard the evidence against his son in the magistrates’ court.

He could not believe what he was hearing – his son Arthur, one of eight children, was accused of riding his bicycle on the pavement.

Sir Arthur Forwood MPlistened intently to the evidence of PC 209 Sproston relating to an incident in Acrefield Road, Woolton. It was August 1897 and Sir Arthur was a dominant figure in Liverpool business and political circles. He lived in a mansion called The Priory in Woolton Hill Road and was known for his brusque, no-nonsense manner.

PC Sproston told the court how young Arthur tried to escape but he chased and caught him. However, when the boy stood up in court PC Sproston was unable to identify him as the errant cyclist. Sir Arthur launched a scathing attack on the police evidence and declared it was a case of mistaken identity. The magistrates agreed and the case was dismissed.

The Priory was a prominent landmark overlooking Childwall Valley for 60 years after shipowner and leading Conservative Sir Arthur built it in 1871. Many leading politicians visited the Forwoods at their impressive home. Chancellor of the Exchequer and later Foreign Secretary Sir Stafford Northcote stayed at The Priory in 1884.

how a crowd greeted Lord Salisbury at Garston Station: “Several lines of bunting were displayed and the juvenile band of the Garston Orange Lodge and True Blues paraded up and down playing appropriate tunes.” Sir Arthur died at The Priory in September 1898, aged 62 – it was said from over-work. His family stayed on until 1909

when magistrate Paul Hemelryk took up residence. The Priory was a convent between 1923 and 1930, then demolished. All that remains today is a pedestrian gate (pictured) that once stood next to the main entrance. PC Sproston had the last word. Just days after the bike incident, the conscientious officer caught Sir Arthur’s dog at large
