As the old saying goes: “time flies”! However, it does seem incredible to think that our first edition was published eight years ago this month. What started off as a “bright idea” when we were working together at the Liverpool Echo came to fruition
in July 2006 and we started off by distributing 8,000 copies of the West Derby Link t h r o u g h o u t We s t Derby & Croxteth Park. We’ve since gone from strength to strength and following the launch of the South Liverpool Link in August 2007, The Liverpool LINK now has a total monthly

distribution of 39,000. If someone had told us that eight years ago we’d have said it was way beyond our wildest dreams and expectations! As it is, we have firmly established ourselves as a favourite independent local advertising publication. We remain a totally independent business and are the first to recognise that the success of The Link is entirely down to you - our readers and our advertisers. So we say a very big thank you to you all for your constant support and loyalty over the last eight years and for the trust and confidence you have placed in us. We also thank you, our readers, for the way in which you have supported our advertisers. The old adage that

if you stand still in business then you end up going backwards is especially true these days and as many of you are aware, we have made some exciting changes to the LINK over the past eight years. So in thanking all our readers and advertisers we’d again like to pass on our sincere thanks to: • All our regular contributors who have helped us so much over the years with their great articles: Stephen Guy (whose wonderful local history articles continue to inform and entertain - we don’t know how he keeps coming up with such great articles!), Jim Stanway (South Liverpool FC), Peter Harrison (Alder F.C.), Mick Titherington (Stoneycroft FC). Paul Coshott (Fighting Fit) and of course Peter (Moira’s husband) who does all our competitions/quizzes and so on and who writes and checks many of
our articles for us. • Vic and Joan; our typesetters and designers. • Tony and Alan and the team; our distributors • Joe and Irene; for your continued assistance and moral support and for coming up with the great name THE LINK. So here’s to the next eight years!! Best wishes and many thanks to you all, Moira & Dawn

The Victorians were hugely confident risktakers who left behind a legacy of impressive buildings, parks and other structures. Liverpool remains a great Victorian city despite mass destruction in the
Second World War and the results of economic decline and growth. Prosperous merchants left their mark on Liverpool more than any other place in Britain, particularly in south Liverpool.
Allerton, Woolton, Mossley Hill, Childwall and Gateacre formed patchworks of small estates surrounding well-built mansions. These palaces of plenty

arms, it prepares the visitor for the glories of the park. Opened in May 1872, Sefton Park is a great green oasis offering escape from life’s pressures through recreation, exercise and simple enjoyment of fresh air. It is also home to many species of birds and animals. Throughout Liverpool there are many evocative grand entrances, some to places that are long gone. The heavy gates that once guarded the vanished Sailors’ Home in Canning Place now complement the modern attractions of Liverpool One shopping precinct. Gates to Croxteth Hall in West Derby Village are guarded by two lions bearing the Molyneux Cross, emblem of the Earls of Sefton. A big gate in Halewood Road, Gateacre, formerly stood in the old Tower Buildings in Water Street. Many more humble former entrances can be seen scattered around the suburbs where they have been affectionately preserved. Many of these houses had grand or at least imposing entrances, some of which have survived long after the residences disappeared. Strawberry Field was demolished long ago, a victim of dry rot, but its ornate gate (or a replica) in Beaconsfield Road is visited by countless Beatles fans every year. The elegant entrance gate once leading to another demolished mansion, Allerton Tower, still stands with its lovely lodge in Woolton Road. Both Princes Park and Sefton Park have stunning entrances. The famous gold leaf sunburst gates have been a feature of Princes Park for generations. They are thought to have been designed by Sir James Pennythorne, one of the architectural giants of the early Victorian age. The huge stone entrance to Sefton Park off Aigburth Road (pictured) shouts confidence. With its half-timbered lodge and Liverpool coat of

From July 23-27th, Liverpool will see the jubilant return of the little giant girl and her trusty pet dog Xolo. The event will commemorate Memories of August, a hundred years since the start of the First World War. The giants were last seen here in Liverpool in 2012 as part of the Sea Odyssey story, which was hailed as a spectacular event by all who had the pleasure of seeing them around various parts of our beautiful city of Liverpool. Street theatre company Royal de Luxe, in partnership with Liverpool City Council, will be at the helm of putting on what will undoubtedly be a fascinating commemorative spectacle. This year Newsham Park will play host to the little giant girl and Xolo, Firstly they are to arrive at Clarence Dock and will then make the journey up to the
park. Unfortunately this time the giant uncle won’t be making an appearance, perhaps this time he’s decided to rest his giant feet at home! We will however have the pleasure of seeing the giant grandma for the first time. No doubt she’ll be arriving to keep a watchful eye out for the girl and Xolo the dog and she will search the city for them. I suppose you could say the grandma put the Nan in Nantes, which is where all the giants hail from. The giants are to their hometown of Nantes (in France) what The Beatles are to Liverpool. The giant grandma is set to be sleeping in St Georges Hall before waking up to explore this beautiful city looking for her granddaughter and her trusted dog. So be sure not to miss this wonderful event. I’m sure the three giants are going to be far too big to miss.

The Graphic was their local palace of dreams. Many people trooped into the cosy cinema but few knew the joy experienced by Doris. She and best friend May paid their sixpences and settled down in the stalls to enjoy the latest offerings on the silver screen. The new talkies had transformed the cinema experience. The
silent films, accompanied by a tinkling piano, now seemed a lifetime away. The Graphic was filled with the booming voices of stars who were projected in monochrome splendour on to the big screen. Doris and May experienced a tingling thrill as the curtain swished back for the first film. They watched enthralled, lapping up every detail of the plot. The first film – or B picture – was often a drama or romance with little-known actors. The tension mounted during the interval when usherettes sta-
tioned themselves in front of the screen selling ice creams and popcorn. Lights dimmed, there were trailers for the next attractions plus adverts and a newsreel. It was then time for the main feature. Doris adored some of the stars while fearing and admiring others. It was 1935 and she was particularly drawn to Clark Gable and Douglas Fairbanks Jnr among the Americans. However, Brits such as Leslie Howard and Cary Grant swept her off her feet. She had a soft spot for classical actor Leslie Banks

from nearby Stoneycroft. One night the friends sat feeling bored in the middle of a turgid B picture. Doris’s eyes followed the flickering beam as it bounced and trembled from high up in the projectionist’s room. She craned her head around and, narrowing her eyes, saw a man peering out next to the projector. Doris could only see his profile but it made her catch her breath – he was as handsome as any of the film stars. She had to see more and made the excuse of going to the loo. Walking slowly up the

DISCOUNT BEDS aisle to get nearer the projection room, she got a good view of the handsome man and fell
back against the wall, her arms held high with excitement. Doris quickly pulled
herself together, grateful no-one could see her in the darkened auditorium.
She watched the man, her adoring eyes taking in every detail of his silhouette.
“You look as if you’ve seen the light,” said May as they enjoyed their ice cream tubs in the interval. “Was there some hidden meaning in that awful film?” Doris told May that she just HAD to meet the projectionist. After the film, they slipped past the manager and made their way upstairs. In the cramped projection
room they were greeted by an elderly, bald, bad-tempered man who chased them down the stairs. As he passed a window, Doris noticed that his ruddy, wrinkled face looked so handsome in profile. Read my next Strange Tale – He’s Coming to Get You – in the August Link.

shows, a feature that continues to the present day. While Frank was well-known in the city (he was Captain of Woolton Golf Club and a keen Rotarian), Joyce was without doubt the "power behind the throne" and made sure that the both the house and business operated smoothly. Mr & Mrs Mac remained in the business until 1992 when they retired and the business was taken over by Ian and Garry who had both worked
in the shop for many years. In 2002 Ian left the partnership (but not the shop) and Garry and his wife Barbara continued to build on the foundations laid down over so many years. Indeed, Barbara is a worthy successor to Mrs Mac as her choice of greeting cards is widely acknowledged to be the best in South Liverpool. Woolton Golf Club FLEXIBLE MEMBERSHIP OFFER AT WOOLTON GOLF CLUB A one year contract for those in the 28-50 age group
For any woman wanting to slim down and shape up in South Liverpool, life has just got a whole lot easier. Gymophobics ‘ladies only’ facility is part of a nationwide chain that has already helped more than 100,000 women of all ages and all shapes and sizes to achieve real figure improvement. T h e i r f o u n d e r, D o n n a Hubbard, recently won the industry’s highest individual award for her pioneering programme which focuses on weight and inch loss. The new centre which is situated in Allerton Road is nothing like a conventional gym: instructors are trained as lifestyle counsellors and design a personal diet and exercise programme for each client based on their age, needs and fitness. The beautiful feminine en-
vironment is designed to be friendly and non-intimidating. There are no weight machines or treadmills at Gymophobics. In their place is a unique circuit of ‘air’ driven equipment which makes exercise easy and like pushing or pulling against a cushion of air. There are 10 exercise stations on the circuit which takes just 30 minutes to complete and ladies attend either twice or three times each week. Each body part is gently tightened and toned and most ladies lose at least one dress size in the first few weeks. But the Gymophobics circuit is only a part of what is on offer. Instructors design a lifestyle programme for each lady which includes their personal diet and home exercise for the days in between their visits. The programme is highly motivational with ladies treated like VIPs on every visit. As Donna says “It is like having your own
Personal Trainer”. Each lady has a programme which is being constantly reviewed to ensure that their weekly targets are being achieved. “We make visits fun” says Donna. “That’s why we attract all ages from teens to ladies aged 60 plus”. Donna’s award winning programme is the first in the UK to be awarded a Trade Mark for its originality. Called Resisted Tension it is the first to integrate three different types of exercise modality. Donna explains “Unlike weight training, Resisted Tension means that resistance levels can be a lot lower. This makes exercise that much easier but even more effective” To find out more about Gymophobics and their monthly fees of around £30 for unlimited use, visit their web site at www.gymophobics.co.uk then call to arrange a free Guest Visit on 0151 345 4330

CAVERN CONFUSION QUASHED! by Nicola Perrins, from the Mersey Gig Guide Much confusion surrounds the history of Liverpool’s beloved Cavern Club, as locals and tourists alike constantly struggle to figure out where it’s been located over the years. So let’s set the record straight once and for all. Opened by entrepreneur Alan Sytner in 1957 as a jazz club, the Cavern Club later became popular with skiffle groups and soon
turned Mathew Street into the heart of rock and roll on Merseyside. Sadly, due to financial failings, the Club was closed in February 1966 and re-opened in the July, following a full refurb by new proprietors. But at 6am on Friday 28th May 1973, the Cavern Club closed its doors forever. In 1974 the warehouses above it were demolished and the space below that had once been the Cavern, was filled with rubble. In August of 1973, the ‘New
Cavern’opened, situated on the opposite side of Mathew Street at numbers 715, the old Fruit Exchange. March 1976 saw this version of the Cavern Club change its name to ‘Revolution’ in the hope of attracting a new crowd, but unfortunately it closed in the April, re-opening in October of that year as the now iconic Eric’s. In April 1984, the Cavern Club as we now know it was reconstructed back on the original side of Mathew Street as
part of the Cavern Walks development, using bricks from the excavation of the original club and utilising some original doorways and overlapping areas between new and old. Opinion will probably always remain divided as to the historic ‘relevance’of the current site, but the fact is that the site will forever be “where it all started” and Liverpool has every right to remain very proud of it.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL? by Mick Titherington continued from page 36 overhaul the whole structure and system of the game at grassroots level then it could just fade away. Having said all that it seems appropriate to laud those people who dedicate their lives to running clubs at amateur level, who give their time and en-
ergy to plough their efforts into providing opportunities to those who want to play the game to enable them to do so. Kenny Morrison, the chair of Stoneycroft FC, is one such person. Kenny has been with Stoneycroft for nearly fifty years during which time he has been a player, manager, secretary and is now chairman of
the club. He really is Mr. Stoneycroft and that is why it was a delight to see he had been rewarded with the Joby Humphries Award. This is a local award that is given in recognition of services to the game and nobody deserves it more. Congratulations to him and long may he and his like continue in the game.
MARIE CURIE’S WALK TEN COMES TO LIVERPOOL’S SPEKE HALL We are excited to announce that this year, for the first time, Marie Curie’s Walk Ten will take place at Liverpool’s iconic Speke Hall. On Saturday 16th August, everyone is invited to put on their walking shoes for the 10 kilometre walk, pack a picnic and enjoy the experience of having exclusive evening access to the grounds of this beautiful Tudor mansion. Joining walkers on the evening with her family and friends and walking in memory of
her late sister Pat Foley will be Mary Brade, 67, from Liverpool. Mary says "Pat attended the day care unit at Marie Curie’s Liverpool hospice before sadly passing away on August 16th 2000. The care she received at the hospice was second to none and I have supported Marie Curie whenever I can ever since. I always used to take part in the Daffodil Field of Hope Walk and really enjoyed it so I’m so pleased that there will be a brand new Walk Ten event in Liverpool this year.
The Walk Ten at Speke Hall is taking place on the same date that Pat passed away (Saturday 16th August) so it will be even more special for me and my family to take part and mark this anniversary." This exciting event starts at 6.30pm and following the walk families can tuck into their picnics whilst enjoying a festival atmosphere with activities for all ages including live music, fireworks and a live performance from the Rock Choir. Registration is £10 per person (children under-16 go free; on
the night adult registration is £20) and everyone who takes part is encouraged to raise as much as possible in support of Marie Curie. By signing up for Walk Ten at Speke Hall and raising funds, you’ll be helping to make it possible for Marie Curie to provide more care to terminally ill people and support to their families at the Liverpool hospice. Register now for your Walk Ten at www.mariecurie.org.u k/walkten or for more information call 0845 052 4184

THIS IS REALLY LIVERPOOL A poem by Ian Wignell A vibrant, unbelievable city Basked in its own unique style The Liver Birds perched On top of their architectural heaven Protecting the city from evil spirits And a Church which still partially stands After a Nazi blitz of pounding bombs Where the bands still play their music And people sit drunk on the mighty steps Waiting for people or maybe the bus The friendliest people on the planet Funny, amazingly witty and honest
They can never can do too much to help A city divided by two primary colours One of red and the other of blue It’s a football religion at its zenith Everyone thinks their team is the best And everyone has something To get off their honest scouse chest It’s not like they betray us in the media Stereotyping us into decline Their letters so big and bold At the end of the day we’re Scousers With a heart of 24 carat gold!

DALTON SWEEPS THE BOARD by Jim Stanway
South Liverpool FC’s centre forward Cameron Dalton, who scored 37 goals in a highly productive season (South’s first season in the West Cheshire League 1st Division) swept the board at the
club’s presentation evening on 31 May, winning all three awards available to him. As the first team’s leading scorer, Dalton also won the Players Player of the Season and the Supporters Player of the Season awards.
The reserve team’s leading scorer was Curtis Cummins whose 35 goals was a very impressive total while left back James Welsh won the Players Player of the Season and midfielder and captain Neil Roach won the Manager’s Player of the Season
award. The youth team’s leading scorer was David Mee with 12 goals while midfielder Jordan McGowan was the Players Player of the Season and defender Vita Mbolokele won the Manager’s Player of the Season award.
The ladies’ leading scorer was Claire Piercy, with a very impressive total of 23 goals, which earned her the Players Player of the Season award with defender Kelly Howarth winning the Manager’s Player of the season award. Even though the

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL? by Mick Titherington When you contemplate the opulence surrounding the World Cup, marvel at how well cosseted top professional football players are, observe FIFA’s multi-million pound business dealings and then contrast it with that of the
desperation of those living in Brazil’s favelas you can be forgiven for feeling uncomfortable at the distortion of values it illustrates. Yet while the game at the top level enjoys the investment of billions of pounds, grassroots football in

England is in crisis. Some reports claim that 2,000 players at grassroots level have been lost to the game during the course of the 2013-14 season with many clubs at that level giving up the fight for survival and folding. Football at amateur level has been in decline for a number of years; the Liverpool Sunday League once boasted to be the biggest league in the world with 26+ divisions and can only now muster a tenth of that number. Once famous leagues have gone for ever, for example the I-Zingari League merging with the L i v e r p o o l Combination to form the Liverpool County Premier League. This season the top league in a city regarded as a hotbed of football has seen at least two sides go to the wall and others struggling. Why is this? A variety of reasons have been put forward. There is so much more
to do now than in the past and the younger generation lack the collective commitment to team sports, it has been said. The lack of good quality facilities together with escalating costs have also been offered as contributory factors. Violence and abuse are said to have increased and led to dissuading people to participate in the sport. All these theories have more than an element of truth to them but the fact is it is probably a combination of all these factors that have fuelled the decline. Clearly television and the growing domination of the Barclays Premier League with the growth of commercialisation in the game has left the contention that it is ‘the peoples game’ far behind. Professional clubs have children as young as five training with them and will often sign players on schoolboy terms before they are ten. This often leads to disappointment and de-
spondency when they are later released and many of these players never play again as the concept of playing for enjoyment has been lost on them. It is said that you can’t turn the clock back but it does seem to me that unless the FA are prepared to invest resources to continued on page 35
