HOUSE OF NUMBERS by Stephen Guy
The old stone house saw great changes following the cleari n g o f To x t e t h Park’s royal hunting grounds to make way for farmland. Hundreds of trees were felled in the early 1600s where kings and aristocrats had thrilled at the chase. The forest had been walled off with nobody allowed inside

built about 1618.
By the end of the 17th century there were four farms in the former park. One was White House Farm which originally stood in bleak, open countryside next to a track leading from Liverpool to Speke Hall.
White House Farm carried the date 1666 and it was possibly built by someone who fled the Great Fire of London.
The only other building in the vicinity was the Ancient Chapel of Toxteth,
In 1781 the land, reaching as far as the Mersey, was leased from the Earl of Sefton
The picturesque farmhouse had mullioned windows and two foot thick sandstone walls.

by yeoman farmer Thomas Balmer. The Earl reserved the right to hunt on the land. By this time there were no deer but the family and their guests went after game birds, rabbits, hares, fish and ducks. In 1808 William Bunnell obtained the freehold and later owners included James Birkett and John Chism. The original track grew into Aigburth Road which was ex-
tensively developed in Vi c t o r i a n t i m e s . Fulwood Park was created in 1840 for wealthy merchants – White House Farm stood next to the entrance gates. At about this time it began to be referred to as The Three Sixes, in relation to the date on the building. The name may also have been linked by superstitious people to the number 666 in the B i b l e ’s B o o k o f Revelation.

The original farmhouse (pictured in 1907) was preserved when it was extended around the time Fulwood Park was built. Although some original features were retained, several rooms were knocked into one to let in light and air. John Orrell Strafford JP, a general broker, bought The Three Sixes in 1868 and lived there until his death in 1917. It remained in the family but was used as a kindergarten and school run by Gertrude Harding until 1933. The farmhouse was demolished but a house called The Three Sixes still stands on the site. • Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the M u s e u m o f Liverpool, PierHead, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.
