From today 17,000 homes will receive a free copy of the Link in addition to a further 3,000 copies being made available at business premises and local supermarkets. That’s a total of 20,000 copies being distributed EVERY month. And it’s all down to the hard work and determination of two local ladies….Moira Hesketh and Dawn Williams, who had a dream of establishing an entirely independent publication for the area in which they live. Both highly skilled
Moira Hesketh in the world of newspaper advertising Moira and Dawn have not only achieved their ambition but are quick to recognise that improving their publication is the number one priority. Take the size: Yes, the Link is now Tabloid on very good quality newsprint and - if you have an eye for detail - you will have noticed that it is stapled to provide an overall neat and easy to handle product. It goes without saying that you can’t stand still in any business these days. The improved benefit for advertisers is
that your message will reach a lot more readers. No other free title provides an audience of 20,000 each month. For the record: people living in the Woolton Hill, Woolton Park and Calderstones areas will now receive advertiser’s up-to-date messages. And when it comes to the cost for advertising space, the Link’s your best vehicle to get the right message across at the right price. For instance: An advertisement in the Link of 6.5cm deep x 9cm wide will cost only £41.66 for a massive 20,000 distribution compared with
the cost of a same size advertisement with other local titles of £32 for only 2,000 distribution. The difference is that the Link costs only £2.08 per thousand copies compared to an astonishing £16.00 per thousand with others! How’s that for good business… One of the biggest improvements is for you, our readers. More space for your news and pictures Yes, Moira and Dawn want to hear a lot more from YOU. If you are in a club like the scouts, brownies, guides, women’s or district social and community organisations or sports clubs then they want to offer you FREE space to tell Link readers about your activities. The Link is opening up its columns for reports and pictures of your events and happenings. So if you’ve always fancied trying your hand at being a reporter then here’s your chance. It may be you want to tell people when something is going to happen or it may be you want to report on an event which has already been and gone in the weeks before the Link is published. That’s fine, but why not include a picture with your report as well? And it couldn’t be easier: Just write your report and send it to
Moira and Dawn at the Link e-mail site at the end of this report, together with your name, whether you hold an official post with your organisation, and your telephone number. The only thing to remember is deadlines…the Link prints in the last week of each month for distribution a couple of days before the start of the next month. Play safe and plan ahead to get your “copy” in really early. You need to “Think the Link” needs to have your report before the middle of the month and you will be fine. Some of you might like to start the ball rolling by sending your views on your new-look Link. So how’s that for a good deal if you belong to a club, school or any other organisation. It’s over to you now to help us make the Link even better and full of news of your own organisation. Remember the Link keeps you in touch with the people and essential businesses around you…thanks to two women who pushed ahead with a plan to launch a title which they wanted to be truly independent. *Send e-mails to: Moira or Dawn on: liverpoollink@yahoo.co.uk

PRINCES’ LAKELAND by Stephen Guy
They would take a leisurely stroll from their comfortable home across the rolling parkland to the peaceful lake with its island and abundant wildlife. The family were soon at the small boathouse built in the fashionable Swiss cottage style favoured by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Soon the boathouse doors were open, the elegant boat was down the slipway into the water and the family enjoyed a pleasant hour or two exploring the lake. Then it was back to the boathouse and up the spiral stair to the upper room giving views across the park. If the weather was cool there would be a cosy fire in the grate. Perhaps they would use toasting forks to grill crumpets or freshly-baked hunks of bread which would be smothered with butter and piled on china plates. This was a scene repeated many times in the Victorian heyday of exclusive Princes Park opened in 1843. Liverpool’s wealthy merchants were moving to the fringes of the town and leading gardener and architect Joseph Paxton was commissioned to design the park. A few years later he created the world’s first municipally-funded public park in Birkenhead. Princes Park was the idea of wealthy iron

merchant and benefactor Richard Vaughan Yates who is commemorated by a granite monument erected in 1858. For more than 70 years the area around the lake was a private park for residents living in the large houses overlooking the open space. People would sail on the lake undisturbed by the general public who were only admitted to the outer fringes of the park. Even they were closely monitored by a fearsome top-hatted gatekeeper who lived in a lodge at the main entrance. For example, unsupervised children were barred from entering – this happened to my father and his sisters during the First World War. Princes Park was the place to be seen in the decades after it opened. Queen Victoria had a Swiss cottage built in the grounds of Osborne House, Isle of Wight. Here members of her ever-growing family learnt about gardening and running a household. The Princes Park boathouse (pictured) would have held a small number of rowing boats or perhaps one large vessel. Although the boathouse fell into decay many years ago, the ruins have recently been conserved.

LOCAL AUTHOR HAS SECOND BOOK PUBLISHED Retiring from a job in further education at the age of 60, J. Rapilliard decided to start a new career as a novelist. Putting to good use his lifelong interest in history and archaeology, his first novel, The British Viking (published 2008), recreated the conflicts that affected the British Isles at the end of the 7th century. Last month, his second novel, Penrose - Princess of Penrith, came out. It is the story of Penrose who has to fight for survival,
revenge and her inheritance in the bleak landscape of the Lake District and the Scottish Borders. “In my novels,” says J. Rapilliard, “I rely on archaeological evidence to describe the background to the action, drawing my own conclusions which may at times surprise the reader.” You will have to read his books to make up your own mind. You will be able to meet the author on Monday, April 23rd at Waterstones Liverpool 1, when he will be signing copies of his books.

Mother-of-three transforms dilapidated, vacant building A touch of Moroccan culture has been brought to trendy Lark Lane with the launch of a new independent shop and café. Arabesque Bazaar and Bistro dishes up authentic cuisine and sells trinkets and treasures imported from the North African country. Mother-of-three Maureen Little has transformed a rundown and vacant residential building into an escape to the wonderful exotic lands
1,225 miles away. The former social worker fell in love with the country on a family holiday in 2007 and has returned there a further five times since. Ms Little, 54, of West Derby, said: “Morocco is a truly hypnotic place to visit. I love the hustle and bustle and I could get lost for days in the markets or ‘souks’. “There are plenty of bars, restaurants and boutiques in Lark Lane but I feel like I’m bringing something really unique that also fits in well with the character of the area.”

It also sells clothes including Kaftans, handbags and hats. Maureen has initially sourced her shop goods through an importer but plans to eventually buy directly from the local artisans in Morocco. She said: “It would be great to import directly from the artists and women weavers from the rural villages and towns in Morocco. “They are just trying to make ends meets and make a living just like me.” The bistro, features a seated pavement area on the street and offer s traditional tagine, slowcooked in the traditional earthenware pot, Moroccan salads, couscous and popular Moroccan drinks such as sweet mint tea. Ms Little, who ran Signposts, a success-

YELLOW HOUSE By Hannah Davey LIVERPOOL is a city of renowned culture and is second to none in terms of talent, determination and passion. These characteristics are reinforced by local charity, Yellow House - an organisation that has recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Yellow House founder, George McKane drew his inspiration from the great artist, Vincent Van Gogh. The charity is run with an “open door” policy, similar to Van Gogh’s home in Arles - never was a person denied arts and culture because of social/societal/financial woes. Throughout its quarter of a century in existence, Yellow House has reached out to many youths within the Liverpool area, and helped continued on facing page

Though the work that the organisation undergoes is deemed controversial, it is every bit essential and has changed the lives of more than 10,000 youths thus far.

“If it wasn’t for this place, I’d probably be in prison,” Peter Scott, member of YH for more than a decade. Yellow House is
currently collaborating with five final year Public Relations students at Edge Hill University, in order to spread the good work of the charity, and reach out to any-
one who needs their assistance, and as part of this is beginning a new relationship with Big Yellow Storage; a unique way for George to continue to treasure

held an event to celebrate the charity and give them a helping hand, as they truly deserve it. You can follow Yellow House and remain up-to date

PICTURE: Ursula McNamee (centre) welcomes family and friends to her Blooming Great Tea Party
The Blooming Great Tea Party can be as simple as having a few friends round for a cuppa and a slice of cake. We were delighted with the response last year, more people than ever put the kettle on and shared their favourite tea time treats and helped to raise an amazing £750,000 – thank you. Thank you to everybody across Merseyside who held a Blooming Great Tea Party last year. This year the Blooming Great Tea Party is going to be bigger than ever. So why not pop the kettle on, and start organising your Blooming Great Tea Party! Every cup of tea and every slice of cake enjoyed at your tea party will help provide more Marie Curie Nursing to terminally ill people in
your neighbourhood, or at one of the charity’s nine hospices. Ursula McNamee from Wavertree held a tea party last year, she said: “The tea party was a huge success as a fundraiser raising £457, not to mention as a happy social event and a large amount of delicious tea and cake was consumed. I look forward to holding another party next year.” Host your tea party at anytime during June and July. Every tea party, however big or small, will make a difference. We’ve put together a free pack containing lots of things to help you organise your party along with some fundraising ideas and themes to inspire you and help you raise money. To get your free fundraising pack v i s i t www.mariecurie.org. uk/teaparty or call 08700 340 040.

Dog of the Month - DINKY Dinky is a handsome two year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross who came to Dogs Trust Merseyside as an unclaimed stray. He is a lovely boy who greets the staff with a big waggy tail each morning. Dinky loves any fuss and attention and especially loves going for his walks. Dinky would fit into most family
homes quite easily and can live with children over 10 years of age. He will need a nice active family where he won’t be left for very long by himself as he is easily bored. He will need some basic training and regular exercise. If you think that you could offer Dinky his dream home, please call Dogs Trust Merseyside on 0151 480 0660.

TRIVIA ABOUT BUGS AND INSECTS DID YOU KNOW A cockroach can live for up to a week without a head. A typical bed usually houses over 6 billion dust mites. Amazon ants (red ants found in the western U.S.) steal the larvae of other ants to keep as slaves. The slave ants build homes for and feed the Amazon ants, who cannot do anything but fight. They depend completely on their slaves for survival. Ants are social insects and live in colonies which may have as many as 500,000 individuals. Ants don’t sleep. Australian termites have been known to build mounds twenty feet high and at least 100 feet wide. Dragonflies are one of the fastest insects, flying 50 to 60 mph. Each year, insects eat 1/3 of the Earth’s food crop. In its entire lifetime, the average worker bee produces 1/12th teaspoon of honey. Mosquitoes dislike citronella because it irritates their feet. Mosquitoes prefer children to adults, and blondes to brunettes. No two spider webs are the same. Only female mosquitoes bite. Females need the protein from blood to produce their eggs.

VAN GOGH MEETS VAN GOGH by Stephen Guy
George McKane, dressed as van Gogh with his bandaged ear, salutes the artist’s remarkable self-portrait at the Lady Lever Art Gallery
Liverpool’s Yellow House founder meets his hero For more than 25 years George McKane has celebrated the life of Vincent van
Gogh by dressing up as the painter on the artist’s birthday. This year he pays homage to the troubled genius by visiting the Lady Lever Art
Gallery to see van Gogh’s stunning self-portrait which is on loan from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. George founded Liverpool’s Yellow House

charity in 1986 naming it after van Gogh’s house in Arles which the artist shared with Paul Gauguin, whose self-portrait is also on display at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, on loan from the Musée d’Orsay. The two brilliant works by the artists whose tempestuous friendship created a catalyst in art are displayed until 11 June 2012. George says: “Vincent worked as an artist in the community with doors and windows always open so people could see art as an everyday event. “I found this very inspiring and our Yellow House is open every day for young people. I have been fascinated by van Gogh since reading his biography Lust for Life at Kirkdale Library in Liverpool when I was 15.” Yellow House has developed a local, national and international reputation for the innovative and powerful nature of its work with excluded young people. George adds: “Van Gogh was an outsider and Yellow House is a place for outsiders. It is not only a place of great theatre and art but a place of healing. This is how Vincent influenced me.” Sandra Penketh, head of the Lady Lever Art Gallery, says: “George’s experience
illustrates how Van Gogh has inspired and enriched the lives of generations of people not only through his amazing paintings but his unique personality.” Every year on van Gogh’s birthday (30 March) George and the young people from Yellow House in Eastern Drive, Cressington, celebrate with performances and usually a birthday party. The celebrations include live performances in cafés, art galleries, train stations and boats. George generally dresses up as van Gogh and answers only to the name Vincent. People from around the world send George birthday cards addressed to Vincent. Van Gogh’s self-portrait at the Lady Lever dates from 1887, the year before the two charismatic painters worked together at the Yellow House in the south of France. Van Gogh rented the house in an attempt to set up a community of artists but only Gauguin joined him, with disastrous results. Early in 1888 both men left Paris to find new inspiration Gauguin went to Brittany while van Gogh headed south to Arles. Gauguin wanted somewhere with a simpler way of life while van Gogh wanted a sunny climate so he could experiment with
colour. Van Gogh invited Gauguin and other artists to join him at Arles but all refused. Eventually Gauguin changed his mind and arrived in October 1888. For nearly two months they lived and worked together while debating and theorising about art and experimenting with painting techniques. They argued a great deal and an intense, brooding atmosphere developed in the house. Gauguin had had enough and talked of returning to Paris - unstable van Gogh became distraught. He threatened his friend with a razor and Gauguin fled - the two men never met again although they wrote to each other. Depressed, lonely and angry van Gogh mutilated his own left ear. He later became a voluntary patient in an asylum before killing himself in July 1890. The paintings have been lent to the Lady Lever Art Gallery in exchange for its loan of The Blessed Damozel by Rossetti to the exhibition Debussy, Music and the Arts at the Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris, until 11 June 2012. Martin & Co quenching the thirst for properties
Say you saw it in the LINK Leading Liverpool South lettings company Martin & Co has launched a spring campaign to find more “desperately needed” rental properties in the local area. The supply of homes for rent is being vastly outstripped by demand from tenants, says Denise Griffiths, Director. The demand for all types of property in South Liverpool is always high but this year in particular, there’s an urgent need for more landlords and properties.” Says Director and owner, Denise.
To advertise see page 2 She added “Liverpool is obviously a very attractive place to live but there are added pressures on housing availability created by the City’s vibrant economy, university and financial sector status and seasonal tourism industry. “The demand for rented properties is insatiable in South Liverpool and we really need potential landlords to come forward to help us meet it” Denise added “that the most sought after homes are currently 3 bedroom, unfurnished properties with small low maintenance garden and parking or garage”. Key areas include Woolton, Halewood, Allerton and Childwall. The majority of Martin & Co’s applicants are already qualified waiting to view properties in these areas.
Prospective tenants are looking for good quality property and in the main are looking for longer term rentals. Denise reminded those looking to invest in rented property to speak to a letting agent first – even before a legal or financial adviser. “All too often, the investor will buy the wrong type of property. A letting agent will advise on what’s best to purchase in a particular area and what will provide the best yield. Speak to us first. We have built our reputation on getting our client’s properties let quickly for the best possible rent and for managing the property to ensure it is hassle free for the landlord”. “Our clients tell us that we provide an exceptional level of service, let us do the same for you”.

RESULTS 30 or more Your home could be a health hazard. It’s quite likely an army of harmful germs have invaded and colonised your home. You and your family may be at risk of picking up a nasty infection from bacteria, viruses or fungi that have taken up residence. You need to act quickly if you want to stay healthy. Focus your attention on the germ hotspots: cleaning cloths, the chopping board, the kitchen sink, the toilet, the bath and basin, and the dustbin.
20 to 29 Your heart just isn’t in it. The fight against infectious diseases such as MRSA and E. coli starts at home. You need to focus on targeting germ hotspots such as kitchen cleaning cloths to break the chain of cross-contamination, so you can reduce the risk of transmitting infections. Do a little cleaning every day, to keep on top of the chores and cut your risk of infection.
10 to 20 You’ve got the right
idea. Your home may look clean and tidy but are you doing enough to keep the germs at bay? Bacteria, viruses and fungi carry disease and only targeted hygiene will protect you from infection. Targeted hygiene means getting rid of as many germs as possible, where and when there’s a risk of them spreading and causing infection.
Less than 10 Well done, you’re a hygiene highness. You’ve got high standards of cleanliness. Not only does your home look and feel clean and tidy, it is also hygienically clean. By doing a little cleaning everyday and focusing on the areas most at risk of harboring germs, you’re reducing your risk of picking up a nasty infection. Keep up the good work. by Jim Stanway South Liverpool F.C. are now very close to clinching promotion after three big wins since the crucial match against main rivals Helsby in the last week of February. Trailing 2-0 at half-time, South scored twice within 30 seconds with only five minutes to go, through goals from Mike Thompson and Alex Woodcock, to draw level in the home game against Helsby, leaving the Runcorn-based side 13 points adrift. Since then, South have consolidated their position with three emphatic victories against more lowly opposition. Drawing 3-3 with Belfry at half-time, South stepped up the pace in the second half to win 7-3, Alex
Woodcock starring with five goals, one from the penalty spot. A 4-2 win at Manor Athletic with goals from Andrew Tull, Gary Dunning, Sean Davies and Alex Woodcock and a nine-goal trouncing of Ellesmere Port with two goals for Alex Woodcock and Adam Rood, one from Tom Kinsella and four from new striker Gary Pollard, means that South are now only two wins away from achieving promotion. The reserve team have had two hiccups recently, a 3-2 defeat to first division leaders Liver Academy in the League Cup and a 3-2 defeat to pro-

against Hale with great goals from Mike Tomlinson, Callum Brown, Anthony Marlow and Jake Cotsopoulos. A goalless draw against Widnes Town has not really hampered their title quest as their main rivals Maghull have also dropped points.

order to gain promotion. South’s youth team are still in contention on two fronts, reaching the semi-final of the League Cup with comprehensive wins by 3-1 against Runcorn Town, with two goals coming from Sharif Yusuf, and by 5-1
As we move into March, and the winter becomes a distant memory, the destination of the season’s prizes becomes clearer. However, the name on the Liverpool County Premier League Premier Division title looks like going down to the wire. The current champions Waterloo Dock are still well in contention but there are several clubs, most notably East Villa, Croxteth and Aigburth PH, who could snatch the title from the Dock, who have won the title in each of the five years of the league’s existence. The prestigious Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup will see first-time finalists, second division Kingsley United, facing perennial finalists Waterloo Dock. The Dock were winners on penalties against league rivals Croxteth in the semi-finals while Kingsley were two goal winners against West Cheshire League outfit Marshalls. The Liverpool County Premier League representative team, who reached the final of the last FA Inter-League Cup in 2010, were eliminated at the third round stage in amazing circumstances in the Isle of
Man. Playing the island’s representative squad, the Liverpool team were three goals ahead at half-time, only to be trounced in the second-half, conceding five goals in a snowstorm, including two in injury-time. Liverpool retained their proud record in the FA National Sunday Cup when Canada, leaders of the Liverpool Sunday League Premier Division, defeated Elm Farm (from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire) with two goals from Steve Tames, a promising young striker who also plays for Prescot Cables in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League. They will now play Lakeside Athletic (from Plymouth in Devon) in the semifinal. Canada could be joined by fellow Liverpool Sunday League team Oyster Martyrs who were defeated by FC Tripimendi but may now be reinstated as the London team are being investigated for fielding an ineligible player in several of their ties.
