MARKET A BIG SUCCESS The LINK (Moira and Dawn) attended the second West Derby Farmers Market a couple of Saturdays ago. First we bumped into Steph and Alan Turner of Karmic Angels. Karmic Angels is an International registered charity
N.G.O. who are making a difference in West Africa. They are on their third school build and have been given land the size of 8 football pitches for agricultural plants, fruit, organic and working with over 200 women. They would welcome any gardening gloves, seeds and so on and, of course,
any monetary donations. Contact Stephanie Turner on Regular volunteers are also needed for their many fundraising events. We also met many other stallholders, including: • Jean’s Chocolate Box, a lovely colourful sweet stall selling hand-made cinder toffee, nut brittle, crispy cakes, fudges and sweets. • Jem’s Homemade Jams and Preserves, selling home-made sweets and preserves from old recipes belonging to mum and grandma. Most recipes date back to about 1927 and no artificial
colours, flavourings or preservatives are used. • Delicious Sauce Company - Seven flavours of chilli sauces, including garlic chilli, mint chilli, piri-piri • Larkin’s Farm
stall - fruit and veg stall. Many of the products are grown locally at Larkin’s Farm which is based in Croxteth • Tracy’s Kitchen local people from Croxteth Park. All
home-made produce, delicious strawberry jam and marmalade. English strawberries; gift baskets made to order with free local delivery. Occasion cakes. Cherry and walnut fruit cake, scones, etc. Delicious! Tel No. • Yorkshire Punch a non-alcoholic sugar-free drink made by Greg. Greg told us it’s made from an old monastic recipe and contains 14 herbs

NORMAN CONQUEROR by Stephen Guy, West Derby Society The Norman knights battled with the Saxons in a fight to the death with England as the prize. William of Normandy’s invasion culminated in the Battle of Hastings, one of the most decisive events in British history. The 1066 victory saw the native English defeated and deprived of their power and wealth. King Harold, England’s ruler, died in the battle and the Normans took control – French became the language of the court for hundreds of years. William the Conqueror carried
out a massive audit of his newlyacquired country. The Doomsday Book recorded all the communities including West Derby. There was no Liverpool – just a farm on the banks of the Mersey. Among William’s knights in that key battle was William de Molines. We do not know much about him except that he was number 18 on the Battle Abbey Roll. William hailed from a province in Normandy called Moulineaux (mills). continued on page 4
