CAST IN STONE by Stephen Guy, West Derby Society

Eliza lived in a big house overlooking the junction of two roads and rolling

countryside dotted with other mansions and villas. She and her husband Alderman Hugh

McCubbin lived in Mill Bank House, one of a number of houses between Queens Drive and Tuebrook.

Following the death of her brother Thomas Bowden, Eliza commemorated his life by building a stone drink-

ing fountain near her home in 1911. It is pictured around 1930 after it had been moved to make way

for road improvements. Newly-built houses on Mill Bank stand behind the fountain which once stood in open country. By this time Lark Hill Lane on the right had become Queens Drive – it had yet to be made into a dual carriageway. Hugh McCubbin settled in West Derby around 1871 after moving from Scotland. He first lived in Holly Grange in Town Row, later moving to The Elms which stood where Melwood Drive was built. As Hugh’s business interests prospered he moved into Mill Bank House where he remained for the rest of his life. (The family paid for another, almost identical, fountain at his birthplace in Girvan, Ayrshire.)

Eliza was his second wife – his first, Elizabeth, died in 1895. Eliza also donated the fountain at the junction of West Derby Road and Boaler Street in memory of her father Frederic. Mill Bank House was demolished many years ago and the site is now playing fields. Other vanished houses in this area included Barnfield, Summerfield, Beechwood and Vergmont. Barnfield was demolished to make way for the Jolly Miller pub and modifications to the Mill Lane – Queens Drive junction. Built in 1828 by lawyer Thomas Toulmin, it stood behind a sandstone wall and had a conservatory overlooking Mill Lane. Alater occupant was shipping merchant Charles Dixon. The site of Summerfield is now occupied by a church built in the 1960s. Beechwood – built where West Derby Mill once stood - was demolished in 1987. Vergmont ended its days as headquarters for the meals-onwheels service before being pulled down about 2000. The site remains overgrown and empty next to the new Bankfield Park.
