Winter weather made travelling along the road difficult and dangerous, particularly at night when light only came from the moon. The road started by the Pool and went through often wild and open countryside to
West Derby. Heavy snow sometimes obliterated and closed the highway. Four hundred years ago Christmas was celebrated by decorating homes with holly, ivy and mistletoe. Wealthy people had tables “spread with every edible” but most
people roasted a goose if they were lucky. The poor depended on charity from better-off neighbours. James I had ascended the English throne in 1603 when he had been King of Scotland for 36 years – his reign united the two countries.
HEALTH AND BEAUTY LINK SERVICES LINK The year was 1615 and those passing along the road to West Derby would have noticed a fine newly-built residence. Tuebrook House (pictured) was probably built by a prosperous yeoman farmer. It was constructed of brick when others were still being made from wood and clay (wattle and daub) around a timber frame. At the time, Tuebrook House was probably the only brick-built house between West Derby and Liverpool. The festive season would have seen performances of Shakespeare’s plays the playwright was nearing the end of his life (he died in 1616). Another form of entertainment among the upper classes was the masque, a dramatic entertainment consisting of dancing, dialogue
and song. Pantomimes evolved from elements of the masque. The church was the focal point of communities following the Reformation and religious upheavals of previous decades. Christmas Day was increasingly being shunned by growing numbers of Puritans – dissenters who disapproved of the established church. Their power was to grow as the 17th century progressed, culminating in Britain becoming a republic following the execution of Charles I after years of civil war. Deeply religious, the Puritans could be regarded as Christian fundamentalists – some disapproved of churches and particularly rituals and ceremonies. F o r a t i m e Christmas, along with
dancing and other entertainments, was effectively banned. However, people doubtless celebrated in private in a sparsely-populated land where it was relatively easy to keep things hidden from prying eyes. West Derby was a scattered community clustered around the village. The Molyneux
