We were walking down Town Row one day when we noticed the sign: Site for New West Derby Library. This was exciting news as the nearest libraries were in Old Swan, Green Lane and Larkhill. There was a commercial lending library in one of the Town Row
shops but the books were mainly novels – you paid every time you borrowed one. This would be different – our own, brand-new library. I was about 10 years old, only having learnt to read at seven, but already I loved books. I particularly liked what we called, for some reason, Shy Boy
Books – bound copies of National Geographic Magazine. The colourful photographs were fascinating. The years rolled by and the sign on the waste ground next to the new Co-op supermarket aged and deteriorated. continued on page 4
