Britain joined France and Turkey to keep the Mediterranean free of Russian influence in what is now considered the first modern war. The conflict centred on the Crimea, a Black Sea peninsular, and employed new technologies including telegraphs and trains. The war was reported daily in the UK media, deploying the first war correspondents, and widely photographed. Britain had not fought a major war for 40 years – since the defeat of
Napoleon – and the Crimean War showed up many deficiencies. It is now best remembered for the Siege of Sebastopol, Charge of the Light Brigade and pioneering nurses Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. War erupted in 1853 and continued until 1856. Turkey headed the ancient Ottoman Empire, then beginning to disintegrate and known as the Sick Man of Europe. Britain and her allies besieged Sebastopol, a key Russian port, for 11 months between 1854 and1855.
Among the British army officers was handsome, dashing 19-year-old West Derby aristocrat Wi l l i a m P h i l i p Molyneux. William, of Croxteth Hall, came from a long line of warriors whose ancestor – William de Moulins – helped Wi l l i a m o f Normandy conquer England at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. William Molyneux (pictured) was appointed a Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards in 1854 and served throughout the siege. The Crimean War revealed problems of class within the mil-
itary. Soldiers in the ranks generally came from the poorest sections of society and were often illiterate. Many joined up to avoid prison or the workhouse. Once in uniform they were accommodated in crowded billets and fed on meat, bread and rum. Flogging was used to maintain discipline. They had virtually no chance of promotion or advancement from the ranks. Officers like William came from the upper classes and had to buy their commissions. Prices were extortionate – a captaincy cost £1,800 (about £126,000 today). William became 4th Earl of Sefton in 1855 during his war service. He was later involved in improvements on the Croxteth Estate and redesigni n g We s t D e r b y Village as the main entrance to his home. The Earl became Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire and in 1866 married Emily, daughter of Lord Hylton.
