by Stephen Guy, West Derby Society Sunlight filled the garden, creating a haven from pressures and cares of the business world that generated wealth.

The lady stood still, faintly smiling, as the artist captured the scene on canvas. Laura le Doux lived with her husband Richard off Town Row, West Derby.

Their comfortable home, staffed by servants and the grounds kept immaculate by gardeners, was a place to relax and entertain. The couple loved

art and commissioned several paintings from the Croatian artist Vlaho Bukovac, a family friend who was a frequent guest. In 1903 they built a music room at Marlfield, their mansion named after the minerals once mined in the area. Decorated by Waring & Gillow in the Art Nouveau style, the modern centrally-heated room was used for musical evenings. A piano stood on a stage which could accommodate other musicians.

from Moira Hesketh (co-owner, Liverpool Link) In last month’s edition of the LINK, I paid tribute to my sister Colette McKenna who sadly passed away in August having been diagnosed with ovarian cancer less than 12 weeks previously. In doing so, I also paid tribute to the wonderful work done at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital (Wards G1 & G2) and I mentioned that my family and I are look-

ing to assist by way of making and raising donations towards the building and opening of “The Orchid Room” at the hospital (which will enable terminally-ill patients to spend their final days with their loved ones with added privacy and dignity). The response from readers and advertisers alike has been overwhelming and in addition to receiving many messages of sympathy and support,

we have also received many donations from you towards “The Orchid Room”. I really can’t tell you how grateful and how touched my family and I are by this and I would just like to say a very big thank you to each and every one of you. It really does mean so much to us at what has been, and still is, a terrible time for us. THANK YOU.

GUNPOWDER, TREASON AND PLOT By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society

It was 1605 and all England was agog with news of the plot to blow up Parliament, King James I and his Lords and MPs. Revenge was swift and Guy Fawkes and his fellow Catholic plotters were executed in the most barbaric manner – hung, drawn and quartered. This meant they were hanged and, while, still alive, chopped up and their heads and body parts displayed on pikes as a warning to others. All had actively planned the horrific deaths of the Protestant king in an act of outrageous terrorism. It was only through the vigilance of the authorities that Fawkes

was spotted before he could light the fuse to ignite the pile of gunpowder-filled barrels under Westminster . This is why we still celebrate the foiling of the plot on 5 November every year by burning and effigy of Guy Fawkes. In 1605 the area that is now south Liverpool was very different from today. It was still partly ancient forest that was gradually being cleared to make way for farmland. Tiny Liverpool ’s seven streets were dominated by an ancient castle. A track led through the trees south to Speke Hall. Just one building is said to have stood along the way – and still stands – the Ancient Chapel of

Toxteth. Visitors to Speke Hall are always fascinated by the priests’ hiding places. In 1605 the Hall was occupied by a Catholic family, the Norrises. As followers of the old faith, they had to pay fines for not attending Church of England services. These fines accelerated the financial decline of the Norris family. Thomas Norris inherited the Hall in 1651 and was the first Protestant head of the family, However, he was a Royalist and was on the losing side in the Civil War when puritan Roundheads (Republicans) fought Cavalier dandies (Royalists). The Norris estates were confiscated and

Her friend heaved a sigh and pursed her lips. She clutched the china cup in gloved hands and gazed out of the window. The two women met every Tuesday afternoon at each other’s homes to while away an hour or two. Clarissa Ovelton and Emily Armstrong were both aged 28 and had known each other since childhood. It was 1890. Clarissa lived with her parents and younger brothers and sisters at Sebastopol, a grim mansion overlooking the Mersey. Emily resided up the road with her widowed mother at Pepperpot Lodge. The subject of their

discussion was Major Hawksmoth Thumb, a 68-year-old widowed father of four sons. He lived in a palatial house nearby in St Anne’s Crescent. The four young Thumbs were contemporaries of Clarissa and Emily but none of them appealed to their sophisticated tastes. Clarissa sipped her tea: “So Major Thumb was in a band – which one?â€? “It was when he was young. He played the trumpet in the regimental band when they were in India. He ended up a major – but that was before he made his fortuneâ€?. Clarissa had to admit her friend’s revelation about the band made her see the old man in a new light. “As well as playing the trumpet he is said to be worth ÂŁ500,000,â€? was Emily’s parting remark.

Clarissa and the major sat close together in a quiet corner at the party. The old soldier’s eyes made it clear that he adored her. She liked maturity and could put up with

the wrinkles because Major Thumb was more than six foot tall, fit as a fiddle and as slim as a lath. However, his huge moustache repelled and fascinated her at

Later she confided in her mother, who was anxious to see her eldest daughter settled after a series of unsuitable dalliances. “Don’t worry,” said Mrs Ovelton. “Kissing a man without a moustache is like eating a boiled egg without salt.” Clarissa felt a flush of anticipation when the major called the following evening.

“Tell me of those days, you know ... when you played in the band,” she asked quietly. He muttered some halting words from behind the foliage covering his upper lip. Then shortly afterwards he impressed her with his manly performance on a shiny new trumpet. “Sorry,” he said after a few squeaks mid-perform-

The following day Clarissa could hardly sit still in quivering anticipation of the major’s visit. Now she

Marie Curie Cancer Care would like to invite you to attend their annual Lights to Remember Service, and sponsor a light in memory of someone special to you at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on Sunday 8th December at 5pm. At the event, you’ll be able to light a candle in memory of some-

one special to you, take part in an evening of carols and readings, and see the children’s daffodil procession. Marie Curie fundraiser Antony Jones, said: “Christmas can be a very difficult time of year for those of us who are remembering loved ones who have passed away. We hope that our service will be of some comfort to those people.”

A special book, with names of all those remembered and messages to them, will be on view in the hospice chapel from mid-December throughout the festive period. Call 0151 801 1412 for a leaflet. No tickets are required and all are welcome. Marie Curie Cancer Care provides services across Merseyside

to benefit terminally ill patients and their families. The Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool cared for 1970 patients during 2012/13 and saw the introduction of 2 new out reach services within the Liverpool area, the cost of the hospice services is £5.7M with only approx. 35% being provided by statutory funding.

CHRIST CHURCH, TUEBROOK by Councillor Steve Radford Over the last week a team of volunteers from the Church of Later Day Saints have been working around the clock to repair and redecorate

the Chapel at Christ Church, Buckingham Road, Tuebrook, and have done a tremendous job renovating the church whilst keeping its very

classical features. On behalf of all t h e Tr u s t e e s o f Christ Church and the wider community we would like to thank our neighbours for their generous labours. We a r e a l s o

pleased that building work has been completed in our Tu e b r o o k H o p e Centre at Christ Church and all activities have reopened at our vibrant community centre.

The music room also served as a gallery to display the family’s artworks including paintings of sensuous nudes. Richard manufactured a patent anti-corrosive paint used for protecting ships’hulls. He was ideally placed in Liverpool to capitalise on the Britain’s huge fleets of ships. Away from the office, like many of his colleagues, he liked to relax in his comfortable home paid for out

of a bulging wallet. Members of the city’s business community worked hard and played hard – some retired early and lived lives of leisure. Their wives were kept busy running the family homes. All employed servants and other domestic staff, essential in houses with dozens of rooms and many stairs. Richard adored Laura and once her life-sized portrait (pictured) was completed it was put in a promi-

nent place at Marlfield. It is now in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery. Richard came to Liverpool in 1868 – he was one of several wealthy Germans who lived in West Derby. Another of his leisure activities was cultivating orchids in greenhouses. Marlfield was later occupied by the Arkle family before being demolished in 1958. St Paul’s School now stands on the site. I remember the old

orchid houses lying derelict. Animals were kept in the grounds. Climbing the wall in Crown Road, opposite Liverpool’s training ground, you could see a horse trough. Next door Mike Seborne’s father kept nanny goats which scared me as a child. • Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 20 Novemberat Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

FIGHTING FIT by Paul Coshott

CLASSES:

3 Fitness tips for Halloween: 1. Halloween can be a time of temptation, especially with so many sweets about so can therefore be a potential time to gain bad weight. Keep a note handy on why you want to get to your ultimate weight. When you are at your ultimate weight, what will you be wearing? What positive comments will you be hearing? 2. I always advise clients to aim to have a ‘clean’ diet throughout the week and then, of a weekend, have a couple of treats providing you don’t over-indulge. Halloween is midweek this year so if you are going to have some treats with the family or friends, then that’s fine, but try and swap them for some treats you might have had over the weekend. 3. If you do over indulge, don’t beat yourself up about it! Maybe add in an extra cardio session that will help burn the

extra calories. I always recommend skipping to clients. Skipping is a great calorie burner and tones up a lot of muscle groups plus you can get a rope for about £3-£5. When

starting off, try and take the rope over your head 30 times, 3 sets to begin with, as your heart rate will rocket, and then slowly build it up, working towards 3 minutes non-stop. Maybe

BOXERCISE-A workout combining moves and discipline from Boxing, burning up to 20 calories a minute and toning up every muscle group in the body. Classes are Monday 6.15-7.30pm and Wednesday 7-8pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, St Mary’s Road, Cressington, L19 0NE JU JITSU-’A Martial Art for today’s needs’,

combining moves from Judo, Karate, Kung Fu etc. Ju Jitsu is an allround Martial art and from a self-defence point of view, it ticks all the boxes. Classes are Monday and Wednesday 5-6.15pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Cressington L19 0NE KUNG FU-An attacking style Martial Art, teaching a variation of blocking, striking and kicks. This class is an introduction to Kung Fu, while helping me with my own development in the style and therefore the cost of a

Inspire a child to read, grow, succeed Beanstalk is a national charity that has been working with Primary Schools

since 1973 to help children improve their literacy skills and build confidence.

We have a fantastic team of volunteers that each visit 3 children in a local primary school

twice a week throughout the school year, spending time together chatting, sharing books and playing games. The volunteer becomes a strong role model in the child’s life and they each look forward to their visits. We ask for a minimum commitment of one year, however our longest serving volunteer has been with us for 28 years! You don’t need any special experience as we provide training and on-going support. We have a local office based in Liverpool and are support-

ing over 480 children in schools in Liverpool and the surrounding areas, we would like your help to reach even more. If you love reading and have time to help children by becoming a volunteer with us or would like to know more about the work of Beanstalk please do get in touch via our website www.beanstalkcharity.org. uk,

NEW BOSS AT THE HELM AT STONEYCROFT FC by Mick Titherington continued from page 24 with the players. The club now has a three week break from playing due to representative and cup games and Ross will be using that time to get to know and assess the current playing strength as he prepares for the next competitive match in November. The Croft’s chairman, Kenny Morrison, expressed his delight at securing Ross’s services and declared it was a “fresh start” for the club. “We believe this is a tremendous appointment and Ross’s enthusiasm and know-how will

bring a fresh approach that will, hopefully, take the club forward to a higher stage. We welcome the fact that he has chosen to commence his managerial career with us and hope he has a long and successful relationship with the club”. When the League fixtures do resume they will provide a tough test for the new man as they are against top of the table sides and Kirkpatrick will be looking for a suitable response from his players to rise to the challenge and add to the club’s points tally.

SOUTH MAINTAIN TITLE CHARGE by Jim Stanway

Three successive league wins for South Liverpool FC in the first division of the West Cheshire League have kept the team in contention for the league title as all their fel-

low contenders have dropped points during the last four weeks. A 3-1 win at home to Christleton was much more comfortable than the scoreline suggests after Cameron Dalton, the

club’s leading scorer, put South ahead and a Tom Kinsella penalty gave the teal a three goal lead. A 3-2 win at Mossley Hill, who were third in the table at the time, should again have been more comfortable as it was only a poor defensive error for Mossley Hill’s second goal, only minutes before the final whistle, which gave South a

few anxious moments. A 2-0 win at mid-table Hale was only clinched with a last-minute goal by midfielder Kevin Martin. Progress was made in the Challenge Cup with a comprehensive 5-0 win at Alder, striker Alex Woodcock opening the scoring in the first minute, and closing the scoring as well, with goals from

Cameron Dalton, Gary Dunning and Gary Pollard completing an impressive win. The reserves have had a mixed month with two wins in the Junior Cup and two hard-fought games against title rivals in the West Cheshire League third division, St Helens Town Reserves. A 2-1 win at Cheshire Lines in the first round with

two goals from leading scorer Curtis Cummins was followed by a 5-1 win at Warrington League outfit Knowsley South in the second round, a win made more impressive by the fact that goalie Sam Mass was injured early on but an excellent second half performance blew the opposition away. Two goals each for

Sharif Yusuf and Chris Bramell, both youth team players last season, and one from Curtis Cummins proved too much for the opposition. A 2-1 away defeat and a goalless home draw against third-placed St Helens were much tougher games although with a bit more luck in front of goal both games

could have been turned into wins. The youth team have also had mixed fortunes of late, losing 3-0 to title favourites Bootle, playing most of the game with 10 men, and drawing 3-3 with Maghull with goals for David Mee, George Doyle and Alex Walsh, despite having to play without keeper Ashley Kelly through injury.

NEW BOSS AT THE HELM AT STONEYCROFT FC by Mick Titherington Stoneycroft have unveiled their new boss, naming Ross Kirkpatrick as the man to take over from John Leary who stood down four weeks ago. It is the thirty-four year old’s first managerial appointment and he comes with a wealth of playing experience at a high level. Forced to give up playing because of an injury, Ross was anxious to stay in the game and the club were delighted that he agreed to take charge of the Maiden Lane based outfit. They will be hoping that he brings a fresh outlook to the club and is able to improve on current results.
