AGE OF THE TRAM Allies, engineer to the Local Board of West Derby, giving precise details of the tram lines. The system consisted of Barker’s Patent Tramway with steel rails running along West Derby Road, Mill Bank and Mill Lane to the terminus at the Village. Mr Allies stipulated a tight schedule: “The various lines when once began shall be each laid at the rate of not less than 300 yards per week. “The contractors are to employ a sufficient number of men
by Stephen Guy, West Derby Society The plans were drawn up and the specifications laid down - horse-drawn trams

to advance the work as rapidly as may be considered advisable by the engineer. “They are not to obstruct the traffic of the streets or roads for a longer time than is absolutely necessary and shall not stack material, except when unavoidable, as to interfere with the foot traffic.” A list of prices reveals that the steel rails, delivered to the site, cost £7 7s 6d (£7.38) per ton. A plate-layer was paid 4/6 (28p) a day while a labourer received 3/10 (19p). The new trams were quicker and more comfortable than the old horsedrawn omnibuses. The first bus service started in Liverpool about 1833, travelling between the Turk’s Head inn at Knotty Ash (next to the village hall) and the town centre. A similar bus service started from West Derby Village a few years later, running every half hour. The trams started serving the Village from February 1882. A new depot, behind the old courthouse, included a stables and hayloft. A tramway inspector’s office was built
against the north wall of the courthouse, which meant that the ancient stocks had to be moved. They spent some time in a garden before being reinstated in their present location to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. The trams were
electrified in 1900, making the horse depot redundant. The building later had a number of uses, latterly by Robewall Furniture until 1976. It was later demolished to make way for a row of shops. One of the last trams is pictured in the
Village on Saturday 23 April 1949 just a month before the service ended.

Say you saw it in the LINK tors to enjoy; The Old Courthouse, the Yeoman’s Cottage and the Monument are just a few. Sitting in the heart of the village, and at the entrance to the historical Croxteth Country Park, is the centrepiece which is St Mary’s Church. St Mary’s was built almost 160 years ago and is a focal point for the whole area. The tower can be seen for many miles in all directions and I have always found it a welcoming sight whenever I have been away for some time. For those living close by it is also a comforting sound as the clock bells ring out the time every quarter and on the hour. The many weddings that take place each year at the church are often celebrated with a peal of bells. Hundreds of services are held at St Mary’s every year; including baptisms,

weddings, funerals and communions. Special services are also held in West Derby Village at Christmas, on Good Friday and on Remembrance Sunday. Many people attend on Sundays and also the Wednesday morning Holy Communion Service at 10am. In this way the Church cares for the people of West Derby at the critical moments in their lives. Each day we pray for the people of this community. An historic building like St Mary’s is expensive to maintain and repairs are never simple or cheap. But the Rector and Church Council believe it is worth maintaining such a building as the parish church for the benefit of the community and people. It is from this location that so much work for and with the people of the area, from the children in school to older folk in our residential homes, originates. You may have a connection to St Mary’s. Maybe you were married at St Mary’s or attended our church school or had your children baptised here. Perhaps you were a member of the youth club or uniformed organisations affiliated to St Mary’s. You might have a loved one’s ashes in the Garden of

He had a strange, distinctive look about him – the haughty expression, the nonchalant air but, most of all, his penetrating eye. Vincent Colebrook lived in shabby splendour in a villa that once echoed to the sound of laughter and the drone of conversation. It was now silent. It was the period between the wars when Liverpool was hit by the Depression. The wheels of industry slowed, fewer ships came into port and many people were out of work. The modern world stopped at the sandstone gates of Vermont in the leafy Victorian suburb. At one time the Valdemarts and the Colebrooks had socialised, when business deals were struck

He wrapped himself in the past as he wrapped himself in his theatrical cloak when he boiled off his inner rage in long walks across the city’s parks. He could afford to ignore the realities of the 1930s. His family had grown rich, like many others, as cotton traders. My father, Frederic, knew him well. They had similar interests although Vincent was a product of the last gasps of Victorian era. Vincent had a rather grumpy old butler called Stumble, who would usher visitors into The Presence. Invariably Vincent would be sitting, legs elegantly crossed, in his leather armchair by the fire. Adjusting his monocle, he would offer you the seat opposite and scrutinise you with his all-seeing eye. Father said it was like being examined by a predatory insect. In his youth Vincent had been on the stage and knew the power of anticipation, the strength of tension and the relief of humour. He could be terrifying and funny in equal measures.
“You have been though the woods and sat on the stone seat at Camp Hill,” was his opening remark on one visit. Father confirmed that Vincent was correct. “You guessed it – I usually come that way,” said Dad. Vincent laughed: “Only partly – the mud on your shoes and the sand on your coat give some of the game away.” Other so-called guesses were not so harmless. One acquaintance had a terrible shock when he visited Vincent
Say you saw it in the LINK one freezing January day when even the rooks and crows were silent. Vincent’s face had he aspect of a cadaver, his piercing blue eye peered through the monocle as a fish looks through the ice of a frozen pond. “You must not see her,” he quietly told his visitor. “If you do, the earth will collapse and you will be trapped forever.” The following day, the young man was on his way across a field to meet his girlfriend,
who worked in nearby stables. He saw her, waved – and promptly vanished from sight. He had fallen down an old well and was rescued with great difficulty. At Vincent’s funeral, father was watching the coffin being lowered into the family vault when he distinctly heard a familiar voice murmur: “I can see you”. • Read my next Strange Tale - The Veil – in the November Link.

- THE LATEST STEPHEN JONES BOOK boxed professionally after setting an amateur record for successive knockout wins in one season. His first book (“Three WeeksOne Night”) spawned a whole raft of home town urban myths and his new book (“Colourful”) is a darkly witty collection of personal anecdotes that serve as a platform for a self-deprecating black humour. Stephen is currently producing the feature film “Angel Falls” and creating the animated TV Series “Sockland”. “Colourful” is now available on Amazon (Kindle edition priced at £2.96) and has attracted a 5-star
rating and some fantastic reviews (one reviewer called it “a Liverpudlian masterpiece” and another commented “…it’s absolutely brilliant, a right laugh from start to finish…..so thought provoking as well, it will leave you wondering….”). Out now and well worth a read!

To advertise see page TWO Sam, male, Border Collie, Aged 2 years Sam is an absolute sweetheart who came into Dogs Trust Merseyside from a stray pound. He can be very nervous of new people but once you have gained his trust he gives fabulous cuddles. Sam prefers human company so would like to be the only dog in the home. Sam needs a patient home who can give him the time and space to gain a bond with him. We do not know Sam’s history but he does get worried in new environments and is a bit of an escape artist so his new owner will need to keep a careful eye on him! Sadly Sam came to us
with a leg that had an old injury and unfortunately this leg had to be removed but he is coping very well on just three. Dogs are in fact amazingly good at adapting to the loss of a limb. Once they are over the actual operation (probably a few days), they very quickly learn to walk on the other three legs and once they’re fit enough to run around you’ll hardly know there’s a leg missing. If you would like to offer a home to Sam please call Dogs Trust Merseyside directly on 0151 480 0660, visit the centre at Whiston Lane, Huyton, L36 6HP or visit www.dogstrust.org.uk

The nursery hosted a special ‘Children’s Graduation’ event for their ‘big school’ leavers and their families on Saturday 8th September which was attended by Stephen Twigg, Labour MP and Shadow Secretary for

Zoe Sewell, nursery manager, told The LINK: “We are very excited and proud of our achievement in gaining the NDNA e-Quality Counts kitemark. Here at Kids in Bloom we are committed to ensuring that our children are cared for in the best possible environment”. “We are pleased to announce we are in the process of rolling out a programme of Mini Amigos (Spanish lessons) and Jumping Jacks for our children, which will come at no additional cost to parents. Kids in Bloom Out of School Clubs are also proud to announce the opening of a new site in October 2012. It’s that time of year again – but Hallowe’en (or Eve of All Hallows) means daifferent things to different people. The early Christian church saw it as a day to celebrate the saints and it was also known as All Saints Day. The Celts celebrated their dead in pagan rituals long before Christianity made it’s presence
felt and, as with so many other festivities, the pagan tradition combined with the church tradition to give the day a flavour all of it’s own. Of course, what would Hallowe’en be without seasonal goodies such as roast chestnuts, toffee apples or, in Ireland, the traditional barmbrack (fruit bread). Added to these, the growing popularity of American treats
such as pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie now makes Hallowe’en a truly multi-cultural affair, with fun for everyone. “Trick or treat” is a recent American import which arouses mixed feelings but we, of course, have our old customs such as “duckapple” or “applebobbing”, which can be great fun for all the family, and every home should have it’s own jack-

o-lantern, of course – an eerily carved turnip or pumpkin with a candle inside it to complete the ghostly effect. This is believed to be a relic from the Celtic past when every home would light a candle to show the way home to spirits revisiting the earth for the day so the jack-olantern very much symbolises the ancient and modern aspects of this popular festivity. Teenagers love the horror films and fancy-dress parties which have now become so popular and there is another cross-cultural reference here with the United States giving back it’s influence on a tradition which crossed the Atlantic with the Scots and Irish who voyaged there in such large numbers in the 19th. century. Many people are surprised to learn, however, that costume parties and trick-or-treat did not appear until the mid 20th. century, even t h o u g h they have now ma de Hallowe’en a considerable m o n e y spinner around the globe. So, however you choose to celebrate, we at The Link wish all our readers a very happy and e n j o y a b l e Hallowe’en!

TOP CHEF STEWART ST JOHN TAKES OVER THE GRILL ROOM IN WEST DERBY
Stewart St John has built up a great reputation for himself in restaurants across the city over the last 20 years and earlier this year opened his very own family-run restaurant The Grill Room in Muirhead Avenue. Stewart told The LINK: “After more than 20 years in the business I wanted to step back into a more personal project. My wife Maisie and I live in West Derby. We wanted to open up our own family-run restaurant and decided we wanted to do it locally. The Grill Room has seen us accomplish this and we have created an intimate and friendly family-run restaurant with a great ambiance and serving great food”. With over 20 years’ experience (including Armadillo, Ziba, The Stables, Signature Cafe and the Sir Thomas Hotel restaurant, St
John’s) Stewart has a great reputation and a large and loyal following. St Johns Restaurant in the Sir Thomas Hotel was named after him after he set this up and then headed the kitchen and when he worked at the News Bar he assisted actress Jennifer Ellison when she won Hells Kitchen with Gordon Ramsey. Maisie told us: “Stewart is really modest but he has earned an amazing reputation across the city. We’ve done really well since we opened and, mainly by word of mouth and by Stewart’s loyal customers following him across the city, we get busier and busier each week. Three of our regular customers are local British boxing champions (David Price, Derry Matthews and Rocky Fields) and it’s great when they get on twitter to each other discussing what fabulous meals they’ve just had here at The Grill Room!” As the name suggests, The Grill Room offers a wide selection of fine cuts of meat expertly cooked at the grill with delicious results. Stewart continued: “We have an ever-changing specials board and a procession of affordable offers on hearty ribs, roasts and risottos. I use as much local produce as possible and we get a lot of people asking us about the ingredients because it’s all really good stuff”. A great example is
Stewart’s cockle popcorn, a fun take on the seafood snack which accompanies some fantastic crab cakes for a starter. Also, the traditional fish and “proper” chips with home-made tartar sauce is surely one of the best around.
Stewart concluded: “I get this really warm feeling from knowing that I can use my wealth of experience to help our family venture become reality”. So if you’re after the best food off the city centre’s beaten track then try

AMPUTEE SOLDIER IS AN INSPIRATION Former Royal Marine Who Lost His Leg Due To an IED is turning his Wounds into Wisdom and is now a Motivational Speaker Aged just 24, Andy Grant is an Iraq and Afghanistan War Veteran and an amputee. After successful completion of the Potential Royal Marine Course, he embarked on the 32-week basic training and earned his coveted Green Beret. Andy joined 45 Commando, Royal Marines in Scotland and after a tour in Iraq he then went on to Afghanistan. On 3rd Feb. 2009, on a routine early morning foot patrol in Sangin, Helmand Provence, his
best friend and lead-man jumped over a ditch, triggering a wire that detonated 2 IED’s (improvised explosive devices) hidden in the ground. Aged just 20 years old, he sustained 27 separate injuries to his face, four limbs and torso, including losing his femoral artery and 6cm of bone in his right leg. He was in a coma for 2 weeks, hospital for 3 months, and then spent 18 months in rehabilitation at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. With injuries to his right leg not healing as it was hoped, Andy made the life-changing and heart-wrenching decision to have a below-knee amputation in November 2010. Just 3 weeks after this, with the aid of
crutches and a prosthetic limb, he was up walking. He was discharged from the Royal Marines on 22nd May 2012, and Andy was prompted to think about what it is he wanted to do in life. Having seen his mum battle leukemia and sadly pass away when he was just 12 years old, to military life and suffering life-changing injuries, from this Andy developed S.M.A.R.T, a technique that has helped him overcome his personal adversities in life, and that can be applied in any walk of life. Although his story is unique, the problems and adversities we all face in our daily lives are very similar. Andy now spends his

On his visits, he takes with him his ‘bag of tricks’ which really engages the audience and creates some fantastic questions, especially with school-aged children. The kit includes pieces of shrapnel taken out of his body, Royal Marine clothing, a selection of his prosthetic legs, and a tourniquet. If a tourniquet hadn’t been applied by his fellow Marines he would have bled to death within minutes and this perfectly highlights the importance of working as a team. There have been many success stories and there have also been some people who, deep down, have not wanted to change for whatever reason. I’m quite a deep thinker so when I come away from a session I sometimes think “why aren’t they doing xyz?” This month and next I will be talking about motivation. This will be split up into 2 parts Beliefs and Values. This month we are going to talk about Beliefs. So what are beliefs and where do they come from? Beliefs come from other people like our parents, teachers, peer groups, friends, family and maybe media. In fact from anyone who still exerts any influence over us. If

you think back to your childhood, how was your behaviour affected by what someone else said to you? Maybe a remark from a teacher or colleague such as “what a stupid answer” made you think twice about raising your hand again in class for fear of humiliation. Can you remember any strong beliefs that you formed about yourself or your situation? It is likely that these beliefs still influence your behaviour today. Beliefs can play a big part when working towards something, e.g. “Can I really achieve that? Am I worthy of that?”. If you think of a belief as a tabletop, it will have 4 legs to support it. For example, if you have a belief that “I’m ugly”, then you will need 4 legs or references to support that belief. “I’m fat, I

If you decide something is good, then I’m sure you could find beliefs to back this up also. You and I live through our beliefs. What I want is to help you to change your beliefs into more positive ones.. EXERCISE: What I would like you to do is to write down all your beliefs that empower and disempower you. Spend about 10 minutes doing this and jot down as many as you can. Take a moment to review your beliefs and circle the 3 most empowering beliefs on your list. How do they empower you? Now, look at your disempowering beliefs. What I want you to do here is to knock those legs of certainty from under these beliefs. Choose the two most disempowering beliefs and ask yourself the following questions: How is this belief pathetic and absurd? Was the person I learned this belief from worth modelling in this area? What will it ultimately cost me emotionally if I don’t let go of this belief? What will it ultimately cost me in my relationship if I don’t let go of this belief? What will it cost me physically? What will it cost me financially? Once you have answered these questions, become fully associated to what these beliefs have been costing you. Finally, we can’t get rid of a belief without replacing it with a new one, so write down some positive replacements for the limiting beliefs you have just eliminated. Once you have chosen new beliefs, think of some references or ‘table legs’ that will support your new belief. Whatever the results you are after, think of a person or role model who is already achieving results in a particular area and ask them or think about what their beliefs are.. STONEYCROFT 5 APH 3: CROFT OVERCOME THE CHAMPIONS IN EIGHT GOAL THRILLER continued from page 24 club officials suggest that he may require a little more time to complete his recovery. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the team’s display” enthused a delighted manager, John Leary: “This was a great team performance in which everybody was involved. We played some great stuff and were well worthy of victory. If we can continue to play like that and maintain consistency then we will be in the reckoning come the end of the season. But this is just one game and we have to maintain the momentum and not let our guard drop”. The Croft have more tough fixtures coming up so one can only hope that they can keep up this level of performance. One thing is certain: games like this will bring the crowds in!

As South Liverpool FC commence their first season at second division level, the future looks bright in the West Cheshire League after an unbeaten start and a three point lead at the top of the division. Manager Martin Ryman has brought in several new players to improve the squad and some have shone brightly: striker Cameron Dalton, previously at Waterloo Dock and Collegiate Old Boys, has nine goals from his first seven games and midfielder Neil Best, signed from Cheshire Lines, has provided fresh impetus and has three goals into the bargain: defensive midfielder Steve McLinden, also signed from Cheshire Lines, has provid-
ed weight and strength in the middle of the pitch. The team have scored 31 goals in their first 8 league games, including 5 goals on each of three successive Saturdays; 5-2 against Capenhurst Villa with Dalton bagging four, 5-2 against Prescot Cables Reserves after being 2-1 down just after half time and 5-2 against last season’s divisional champions, Ashville Reserves, with a superb goal by McLinden.
and marriage respectively. The 3-3 home draw with Belfry saw the team achieve a point with two penalties in the last minute, expertly put away by Ross Kennedy. The team’s solitary defeat at rivals from Formby, Redgate Rovers, was the result of a late injury after the three substitutes had already been used with the 10 men conceding 2 goals in the last five minutes.
South’s reserve team gained entry into the third division of the West Cheshire League and have won five of their first eight league games despite losing their main strikers, Mitchell McNally and Francis Evans, for a large part of the early season due to injury
The youth team have also got off to a good start and having finished 4rd last season are favourites to take the title. A 6-1 home win over a youthful Custys was improved by a 20 win at Vauxhall Motors with spectacular goals by Kieran Parker and Callum Brown.

The first team, who were last season promoted to the first division of the County Premier League, started their campaign with a disappointing home defeat to Allerton. However, two back to back wins, 2-1 against Alumni and 5-3 against Copperas Hill, have seen then move to fourth in the table. Goals have come from stalwarts John Elias, Chris McCabe, Terry Tynan and Jopo. The second team, who are in the second division of the County Premier League, have also made a promising start with a flying 5-1 away victory against Aintree Villa, and a 44 draw against a strong KCFC team, having trailed 2-0 at half time. Amongst the goals have been Tony Barnes, Josh Breen and Michael Wall. The third team, a new younger outfit under the guidance of Will Grant and Jimmy Keegan, are unbeaten in their opening two fixtures in the I-Zingari Combination first division. A 2-2 draw against Liverpool Cavaliers was followed by a strong 2-1 victory against Walton CTC. Danny McNally scored the crucial penalty against Walton with Ben Bright, Aaron Fitzsimmons and Pedro Cooke the other marksmen in these fixtures. Finally, the Vets XI demolished De la Salle in the opening day fixture. They followed this up with a credible 2-2 draw against Winchester but then tasted defeat 2-1 against Bleak Vets after conceding a last minute goal. New capture Steve Stewart has scored 6 goals in the three fixtures, with Neil James, Mark Carney and Kevin Haddo also being amongst the goals.
