ROAD TO RUIN by Stephen Guy, West Derby Society

The long road was lined with atmospheric buildings ranging from 18th century villas and Victorian semis to a pub and café. Bowring Park Road developed as transport links improved, with Broadgreen Station providing a convenient link between Liverpool and Manchester. Until 1957 trams rattled along the central reservation to and from Liverpool. There was a strong sense of community with the large houses and gardens kept neat and tidy. The Broadgreen Abbey (pictured) provided refresh-

ment for generations since around the time the pioneering Liverpool to Manchester Railway opened. To the right can be seen Ryebank, an independent school occupying a series of former houses, some half-timbered. It was 1973 and soon the peace of the area would be shattered. Most of the buildings were empty ruins awaiting demolition. A year or so earlier trains had ceased running along the Cheshire Lines railway in a cutting between the pub and the school. It is now the cycle path. The planners had decided many properties must be swept away for the new M62 motorway pro-

routed, without success. As a reporter, I interviewed some of the campaign leaders as the motorway plans unfolded. Another building that was cleared was Mac’s Café near the station. My mum worked there for many years, cycling a mile or so from home. Going was fine but she had to get off and push her ancient bike uphill along Thomas Lane on the way back. She would regale us with stories about the characters congregating in the lit-

tle café. A few years later plans for the Queens Drive flyover went to a public inquiry, which I also covered as a news reporter. The M62 was vital to the regeneration of Liverpool but came at a cost to our heritage and environment. One of the Georgian villas was built from handmade bricks. The original wooden front door had an impressive stone surround – a date stone could be seen high on the wall. A Victorian house

called Holly Bank had a porch with a slate roof. Most of the properties were in excellent condition before their fate was sealed.

Henry Blynk was the first to admit that he was obsessed but insisted his consuming passion harmed noone and helped the natural world. Acentury ago people were perhaps more tolerant of eccentricity although Henry did not put himself in that category. Trees were the centre of his life and had been since early childhood. As a boy he would bathe in the gentle caress of leaves as he climbed trees in the woods. Trees always came before family and friends as far as he was concerned. Henry even worked among the

Here he felt more at home, away from his mildly-sympathetic wife and her barking dogs. Henry chanced on the seeds by accident while walking in the Welsh hills communing with his beloved pines and oaks. They whispered to him in the cool breeze wafting

down from Moel Fammau. His trained eye spotted the seeds clustered beside a boulder and he immediately knew they were different. Scrutiny under the microscope showed unique features which he noted down. He compared similar seeds in textbooks dating back to the 16th century kept in the renowned Athenaeum library. Henry felt a deep sense of excitement with his discovery and carefully planted the seeds in a compost of his own

creation. “Now we will see you,” he murmured confidentially as he placed the tray on an airy shelf in his greenhouse. The seedlings confirmed that this was a previously unrecorded species of willow which he named salix blynk. Three weeks later the seedlings disappeared. Henry made the discovery one sunny morning and was distraught. At first he thought a professional rival had stolen them

but quickly realised he had told nobody. Then, several hours later, he spotted the seedlings in a row on the edge of a flower bed. “Someone is playing a trick on me,” Henry muttered to himself. Then a bizarre series of events began that would occupy the botanist for many weeks – the trees moved around from place to place. “It is as if they are seeking

the best ground to settle in,” he wrote in his journal. Henry noted that the tree beings always went in line, as if marching, although he never actually saw them moving. This only happened in the dead of night. Sometimes a week or two would pass without them shifting, as if they were testing the ground. Then they would be off again. Henry noted each move meticulously. Finally the trees settled in a neat line in a par-

Marie Curie Cancer Care is looking for local people to join a new fundraising group for West Derby. Fundraiser Antony Jones said: “We’re looking for committed people who have a little spare time to give, to help promote the charity in the local community, and help raise much needed funds for Marie Curie. Being in a fundraising group can be great fun, and it’s a great way to meet new friends. There are lots of different roles within our fundraising groups, so there is sure to be one to suit everyone. Group members can make an enormous difference locally by helping to promote fundrais-

ing within their local community, organising fundraising activities and collections, encouraging new volunteers to help the charity, as well as supporting Marie Curie’s major fundraising campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and Blooming Great Tea Party. The vital funds raised by our groups help support the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool which provides expert care and the best possible quality of life, totally free, for people with terminal illnesses. To join the West Derby Fundraising Group, or to find out more about the group and other ways to support the charity, please call Antony Jones on 0151 801 1412 or email: antony.jones@mariecurie.org.uk

CONGRATULATIONS TUEBROOK AND WEST DERBY CHILDREN’S CENTRE (a letter from Cllr Steve Radford & Kevin Morrison) We would like to congratulate our partners at the Tuebrook and West Derby Children’s Centre in that for their first OFSTED inspection they were rated outstanding on all counts As many readers were aware this was one of the first

Children’s Centres to operate a twin site joint management as part of the city council’s costs saving across two very different communities. The fact that such an exceptionally good rating was credited is a real tribute to all the staff, governors and parents As a local charity we are delighted to have worked with the

centre to fund-raise and resource additional activities and projects for the benefit of local people Regards, Cllr Steve Radford (Chairman, Tuebrook Hope Group) and Kevin Morrison (Deputy Chairman, Tuebrook Hope Group)

EXPLORING ADOPTION Families that Last are encouraging prospective parents to consider adoption as a way to build their family. Everyone deserves to be part of a ‘forever family’. Families that Last finds permanent and loving homes for some of the 4,600 children waiting in the care system. They may be older children or children with complex health needs. These children really need a family who are prepared to offer them the love and commitment they deserve. We believe, with the right support, that you can give these children the future they deserve. Our Families that Last team have extensive experience of finding stable homes for children who would otherwise remain in the care system. We provide on-going adoption support for as long as adoptive families need it. This includes our SafeBase parenting programme that helps ensure families get off to the best start. This year there have been changes to the assessment process for prospective adopters,

creating a more efficient process and allowing more children to be adopted with less delay. Get in touch with our Families that Last team today to find out more about the new adoption process and how you can start or grow your family. For more information come along to our Exploring Adoption event: On Wednesday 28th August 12:30 - 7pm at The Women’s Organisation, 54 St James Street, Liverpool, L1 0AB Call: our Families that Last team on 0300 456 2656 Text: ADOPT to 60777 Visit: www.familiesthatlast.org.uk

BURGLAR BUSTED BY DAD DAVID’S NEW PATENT INVENTION After a burglar entered his children’s bedroom through a locked patio door, Dad David Dempsey quit his job and committed himself full-time to inventing a device that would ensure this would never happen again. David, who is a mechanical engineer, says that this was one of the most terrifying experiences he has ever experienced. Every night after tucking Isabelle (10) and Patrick (8) into bed, David would religiously ensure the bedroom patio door was locked. However, the morning after the break-in as David passed the children’s bedroom, what he saw next was heart-stopping. He looked into the

bedroom and the first thing he saw was the curtain blowing inwards on the sliding patio door. David knew immediately that someone had broken into the room. “My first thought was that my children had been abducted”, David told the LINK, “but thankfully I soon realised that they were safe and asleep. On further investigation my phone had gone from beside my bed, with some cash and a bag taken from the kitchen. I did not really care about the stolen items and just sat down and thanked God that the intruder had not harmed or abducted my children. I discovered later by trial and error that it’s quite easy to open a locked patio or

French door but it’s really hard to believe that a burglar was walking around my kids room and my own without me knowing. I could do nothing to protect my family”. After this terrifying experience David set himself one of his biggest engineering challenges ever - to design a device that is affordable (£24.99) and pocketsized that can physically lock and alarm any kind of door or window without the need for tools to fit it. After 3000 hours David is happy to say that DADi Alert is now born (Deter Any Dangerous Intruder). DADi Alert was launched in Ireland in March this year and has had a huge response from the media and radio. It is already stocked in

over 200 shops nationwide in Ireland and now David has moved to Liverpool to launch DADi Alert. David continued: “The device allows anyone to use it and you don’t need a tradesman to fit it as it’s really simple to install. The device was demonstrated recently at a Police Exhibition in Ireland and got overwhelming reviews from top-ranking police officers. DADi Alert switches the element of surprise from the attacker to the victim, it gives the victim time to react and take action so now everyone in society can afford a house alarm”. To purchase or to see the device in operation go to www.dadialert.co.uk

SOUTH IN PENALTY DRAMA continued from page 24 the semi-final. A 1-1 draw, with both sides scoring penalties, brought about a penalty shoot-out, which South won 4-3 with goalie Peter Webster producing a tremendous save to clinch the tie. The final saw South visiting first division cup winners West Kirby and the game was a highly entertaining 4-4 draw, with Cameron Dalton netting a hat-trick only to see South edged out 65 in the ensuing penalty shoot-out. The league campaign has produced mixed results with a 30 home win against fellow promotees Mallaby (goals by Adam Rood, Elliott Burnett & Cameron Dalton) and a 3-1 defeat by Maghull when South’s first-choice strike force of Gargan, Dalton and Woodcock were all unavailable to start. The reserves started their league season with a superb 4-2 win at Ford Motors, with two goals from Curtis

Cummins and one each from Francis Evans (after only 33 seconds) and James Walsh. Fords had been playing in the Liverpool County Premier League premier division last season and are clear favourites to win the third division of the West Cheshire League. The new-look youth team, under the guidance of Mark Eyres and Dave Byrne, have had encouraging wins in pre-season; 8-0 against ROMA and 72 against Burscough as they prepare for a September start in the West Cheshire League youth division. Shelley Doyle made South Liverpool FC history on Sunday 11 August when she scored the first ever goal for the club’s newly formed ladies team in a 3-0 win over Long Lane Ladies in a preseason friendly. The team will be competing in the Liverpool County FA Ladies League and will play their home games at Jericho Lane on Sunday afternoons, with a 2pm kick-off.

5 TIPS FOR A GREAT WORKOUT by Paul Coshott

3 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR WILLPOWER by Paul Coshott 1. Leave the word ‘can’t’, at the front door. 2. Aim a bit higher than what your conscious is telling you - within reason! 3. Visualise yourself achieving the goal - do this often 4. Sip water through-

out your workout to keep you hydrated 5. Don’t eat too soon before you train, otherwise, your body will be using its energy to break down food, rather than using it to workout.

1. Think about your strengths and weaknesses. Make a list of how you can improve your weaknesses, 2. Set short term goals that are attainable and will take you towards a bigger goal 3. Think about how

you will feel, once you have achieved your goal

‘CROFT SHARE THE POINTS IN OPENING FIXTURE By Mick Titherington East Villa 1 - Stoneycroft 1 On a wet and windy August S a t u r d a y Stoneycroft kicked off their season with a visit to the Heron Eccles ground where East Vi l l a w e re t h e hosts.

Se 24 rv hr ic e

With a number of the squad unavailable for a variety of reasons selection was somewhat restricted for manager John Leary. Two of the starting line-up were making their debuts with another on the bench and Sam Kershaw was making his first appearance in a competitive fixture for over a

year. There was an explosive start reminiscent of last season when early goals featured a lot, the difference was this time it was the Croft who netted after five minutes when debutant Adam Hughes poked the ball home from a corner. The visitors seemed inspired by this and went close soon after when the excellent Mike Kinney lobbed the home ‘keeper almost from the halfway line only to see the ball go excruciatingly wide of the post by a whisker. Minutes later Danny Costello was through with only the

keeper to beat but again his effort was wide of the mark. All this happened in opening fifteen minutes and if those opportunities would have been converted it may have been a different story as it was the rest of the half was evenly fought with both sides squandering half chances. After the restart Villa went three at the back and began to press for the equaliser but they found the Stoneycroft backline in resolute mood with centre backs Brian Porter, another debutant, and Mick Gough in fine form. It would be wrong however to

single anybody out in what was an allround team effort with the mood in the team one of determination and commitment. Paul Finnegan played a captain’s role ably assisted in midfield by Paul Carruthers. Adam Hughes turned in workman like performance before having to go off seven minutes into the second half and his replacement, Simon Baker continued in

similar vein. Sam Kershaw at full back is getting back to his best form and with Mike Kinney upfront displaying his undoubted talent supported by Costello and Eddie Baker, with substitutes Mike Holpin, another new signing, and Adam Beckett making vital contributions the overall display pleased the manager. “Although for much of the second half we found ourselves

and the players’ attitude could not be faulted” he said after the game. The Stoneycroft players must have thought they had done enough to earn all three points but surprisingly after the equaliser both sides had

chancesin the dying minutes to secure victory but in the end the draw was probably the fairest outcome. The Croft now travel to play newly promoted Allerton in midweek for the second of five fixtures to be played in August.

SOUTH IN PENALTY DRAMA by Jim Stanway South Liverpool FC were within one penalty of winning some silverware before the league campaign had commenced, losing the pre-season Bill Weight Trophy to West Kirby on penalties. South had an unbeaten pre-season with a 2-1 win against new NW Counties League outfit Widnes Vikings and a 2-2 draw at another NW Counties side Daisy Hill. Five goals in four pre-season matches from new

striker Carl Gargan immediately put pressure on last season’s potent strike force of Cameron Dalton (35 goals) and Alex Woodcock (38 goals) but all three strikers have shown up really well in all the pre-season friendlies. South had qualified for the Bill Weight Trophy by virtue of w i n i n g t h e We s t Cheshire League second division championship and were drawn against first division champions Heswall in continued on page 23
