THE CARNIVAL IS OVER
By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society
HAPPY children carry garlands of flowers along Leyfield Road watched by admiring residents from new houses on the Blackmoor Estate. It is Saturday 24 June 1933 and St Mary’s Carnival procession is wending its way around the district before heading into the grounds of Croxteth Hall. This picture gives remarkable insights into a period of great change in West Derby. Large housing estates were being built as the country eased itself out of the Depression when millions were unemployed. There is a fascinating mix of old and new. Small girls are followed by young women dressed in colourful flowing dresses reflecting a rural past. Costumes and decorations are laden with symbolic references to fertility and re-birth linked to nature and agriculture.
Three decorated horse-drawn carriages are driven by top-hatted coachmen – a reminder of the recent past. Modern cars follow behind. Spectators include schoolboys grimacing at the camera, women in fashionable pudding-basin hats, a policeman and gentleman in bowler hat and wing collar. Newly-built Leyfield Close stands in the distance while on the left is open land where Blackmoor Park Infants’ School was built 20 years later. The picture is one of several from the event recently kindly donated to the West Derby Society. There is also an original programme giving precise details of the day. The Carnival featured a pageant of nations and the crowning of the floral queen. Girls representing 19 nations were followed by Floral Queen Lydia Kavanagh in her carriage with attendants and pages. Floral Queen Elect Muriel Free also travelled in a carriage on the 50-minute
procession. Just 15 years after the First World War, those who gave their lives were remembered with both queens laying a wreath at the war memorial. The procession then went to Croxteth Hall at the invitation of the Earl of Sefton. At 3.30pm the Floral Queen was decrowned and received a crown of forget-menots in return. Miss Free was crowned by Mrs W S Hornby. Following a parade of queens and pageant there was a display of national dances by pupils of Maude Brimelow. There were stalls, side shows, refreshments and sports including fun races. Music was provided by the British Insulated Cables Silver Band. The carnival ended with dancing until 10 pm. n Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 16 November at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

Rebecca Ferguson: from Scouse girl to superwoman

FOR singer Rebecca Ferguson, stepping on to the stage of the Liverpool Phil will be a homecoming with a distinctly positive feel. After what she admits has been a rollercoaster couple of years, including a very public split from the father of her baby Arabella, 30-year-old Rebecca is a new woman. A new Superwoman, in fact, if the title of her latest album is anything to go by. The mum-of-three from Anfield is now living in Paris, although she spends much of her time working in London when she’s not on the road. And she says the album, and her current tour, is very much about what she’s been through and how she’s come out the other side – as a person and as an artist. “It’s been up and down, but I’m in a good place now,” she explains. “I feel like I’ve overcome a lot, that’s why I titled the album Superwoman. It says ‘right, I’m back, I’m positive.’ “I’ve been through a really rubbish time but I want to be honest, you can’t sugar-coat it, there is quite a dark story
behind the album. “But I think it does make it slightly better if you’ve got a vulnerability or you’ve got pain because you can hear it in someone’s voice. “For me, I’d rather watch or listen to artists like that because I find I can relate to them. “So I’m a big fan of artists like Emeli Sande and David Gray, they’ve got a story to tell.” The X Factor star has certainly had her fair share of turmoil and heartache. She’s revealed she broke down emotionally when the father of 22-month-old Arabella left her to bring up the baby alone. “I didn’t handle it well,” she confesses, “but while creating the album I built myself back up. It was therapy. I made something positive out of something terrible. “Everyone thinks you get in the public eye and stardom, as they call it, and then your

I think the toughest have been about relationship things. I’m not a good judge of character, and with Superwoman you hear me falling out of love, missing my ex-partner, going through heartbreak and healing myself. “The single Bones is about being really in love with someone, caring for them a lot, and wanting them to see you and value you as the good woman you are. “I think a lot of women, and men, will be able to relate to this song. “But by the end of the album I’ve licked my wounds and I’m in a positive place. Now I’m more about actions not words; it’s how they treat me, not what they say.” With renewed optimism, Rebecca decided it was time for a new chapter in 2016, moving herself and her three children – Arabella, Lillie-May who is 12 and 10-year-old Karl – to live in Paris this summer. They’ve embraced their
new European lifestyle, “especially the wine, bread and cheese,” she jokes. So why, apart from the obvious plus of being away from the media pressures at home, did she choose France for their new life? “I wanted to challenge myself a little bit and when I went there I fell in love with it and I realised that I won’t push myself unless I go to places where I’m going to learn about things,” she says. “Since moving there I’ve been around people who are artists and I’ve never really known much about art so now it’s
pushing me to learn and be more cultural. “I am just a normal Scouse girl, from a working class background, but I really want to better myself and constantly learn more about culture and about life.” That includes adding the language to her CV – she and the children are now learning to speak French. “Slowly,” she adds, laughing, “and I’ve downloaded Rosetta Stone, so I’m trying …” Rebecca is at the Liverpool Phil on Friday November 4, rescheduled from February.

Mahogany Mary By Anton Valdemart LOUISA loved riding
– it was her passion and joy to thunder off over the countryside on her favourite mount, Steeplejack. The coast around Oglet was excellent riding country, with its low hedges and sloping fields swept by breezes off the Mersey. Louisa was the 19-year-old daughter of Colonel Parkinson of Oglet Hall, a former cavalry officer who had seen service in many campaigns. The Great War had ended a few years before and Louisa was one of the Bright Young Things bringing a breath of fresh air after the years of gloom. They had first come across the carved wooden figure outside Nay’s tack shop where the Parkinsons bought their riding gear. The model of a young girl in riding cap and

Louisa was about 10 when she first saw the advertising sign and instantly called her Mahogany Mary. She would always give the mannequin a hug before entering the shop. “I’m sure Miss Louisa thinks she’s a real live horse rider just like herself,” said Nay to the Colonel.. Louisa was given a riding outfit just like Mary’s on her 11th birthday. “She’s my twin,” she said happily. Louisa soon towered over Mary but still gave the figure a hug when
visiting the shop. It was a dreary, windswept day when Louisa set out on her morning ride. Steeplechase, normally easy to handle, was strangely nervous in the blustery wind. Horse and rider thundered along the shore, galloping through the mud and dodging branches and other flotsam. Louisa turned Steeplechase’s head inland and they cantered over a hillock into Withers Dell. Steeplechase could normally handle the steep descent but suddenly whinnied and rolled down the slope.
Louisa was thrown clear but was knocked unconscious on the trunk of an old hawthorn tree. “She’s strong but has suffered a very nasty concussion,” said the doctor as she lay in a deep sleep at Oglet Hall. “It’s a question of time – all we can do is hope that she recovers naturally. The next 48 hours is crucial,” added the medic to her distraught father. There was a knock on the door. Nay stood with a large bundle in his arms. “I came when I heard the news. I just knew this would help,” he said, putting the bundle

He and Mary kept vigil through the night next to Louisa’s bed. The following morning, just as the church clock struck, Louisa opened her eyes and smiled first at her father, then Mary. She reached out her arms and they knew all was well. With a cracking sound, Mahogany Mary split down the middle and fell apart. It was as if all her strength had been used restoring Louisa to health.

Ice Festival returns LIVERPOOL’S fabulous Ice Festival is on its way back to get everyone in the Christmas spirit this year … and with an even more stunning location than ever before. The festival, which runs from November 11 to January 3, is moving to a new home on the city’s iconic waterfront for 2016. That means it will be perfectly placed for a day of festive family fun for anyone wanting to combine a visit with a city centre shopping trip. The new site will transform the waterfront at the Pier Head, fitting in even more Christmassy entertainment for all ages
with a great variety of food and drink options too. The centrepiece of the event will be a 600sq metre ice rink where festivalgoers can get their skates on and glide round with the beautiful backdrop of the Three Graces. The rink is undercover so whatever the weather, visitors will be able to show off their ice skills. Whether they’re absolute beginners needing a little help from the hand rail, or experts taking an impressive spin, the large rink will be the ideal place to practice some ice moves. And the thrills don’t end there – they can keep the fun going by having a go on a
few of the exhilarating rides including the 45-metre real ice slide. After all that exertion, they can take a well-earned rest by heading to one of the many on-site food outlets, bars and cafes. Guest DJs will be mixing up the soundtrack while festival-goers sample delicious hot dishes and drinks, and for those who just can’t get enough of the wintry wonderland there’ll be a Liverpool-themed Ice Bar where they can chill-out and sample some sub-zero cocktails. Part of the One Magical City campaign, the Ice Festival will be open every day from 11am.

AT Woodlands Hospice we know that Christmas can be a very difficult time if you have lost someone close to you. Our Light up a Life appeal gives you the opportunity to celebrate the life of a loved one by dedicating a light on one of our Christmas trees in December. By dedicating a light to your loved ones, you will not only be celebrating their life, you will be helping us to support our patients and their families at a time they need it most. Each dedication will be carefully recorded in the Book of Life, which will be available to view at the services being held at the hospice and at St Andrew’s Church, Maghull. You will be able to view the Book of Life at the Hospice or online throughout the year. For each light you dedicate you will receive a special card containing the name of your dedication as it appears in the Book of Life and you will have the opportunity to attend one of our services in December. To dedicate a light please visit www. lightupalife4woodlands.org or visit our website to download a form at www. woodlandshospice.org Alternatively, you can call Carole Riley on 0151 529 4143 to dedicate a light over the phone and pay by card or request a form to be posted to you. To guarantee the name(s) appearing in the Book of Life, in time to be viewed at the services please return your form before Friday 18th November. Please note if you would like to attend one of the services this needs to be indicated on the form as tickets are limited for each event.
Sue and Rita – November cats of the month
LEFT behind in a lady’s back garden when she moved out and didn’t come back for her most precious possessions, Sue and Rita sit patiently waiting for their human companion to come and collect them. But she never did come back, and now it almost seems like they’re singing a few lines of the Beatles incredibly moving song Yesterday which has just been played on the radio, as they stare forlornly and longingly out of the window in our small Rescue, waiting, just waiting… “Why did she walk out on us? What did we do? We keep asking ourselves why our lovely human suddenly stopped loving us. We were so lonely when she went, but then – despite ourselves and even though we felt sick inside – we started to get hungry. And then we got frightened. What if she never came back?Where would we get food? And that’s when these Rescue people took us in.But we’re still very sad.”. If you think you can mend their broken hearts, or would like more info, please contact Garston Animal Rescue on 0151 737 1945, 0151 494 0470 or 07745 167170. Animal magic at Chester Zoo THE fabulous Lantern Festival might have been missing from Sefton Park this Halloween, but fans of the stunning display have a chance to marvel at some animal magic in November and December – at Chester Zoo. The Lantern Company returns to the zoo for its fifth year with an illuminated event designed and created specifically for the venue, bringing lantern animals to beautiful lit-up life. The Lanterns at Chester Zoo has become a highlight of the zoo’s calendar and this year’s promises more new
characters and experiences along a new route to allow all the family’s imaginations to run wild. Visitors are invited to take the zebra crossing through a constellation of stars and wander through an enchanted forest where they can meet colourful festive characters and even catch an early glimpse of Santa on his sleigh. A spokesperson for the zoo explains: “You’ll be able to stroll around the zoo after dark to enjoy all of the nighttime sounds, our beautiful lantern-lit gardens and, of course, our magnificent
larger-than-life animal lanterns. “We’ll also be celebrating our local woodland and garden creatures with a host of stunning new lantern sculptures and puppets.” Lanterns at Chester Zoo takes place over three weekends – November 25-27, December 2 and 3, December 9-11 – and an extended final week from December 16-23. The route is expected to take around 90 minutes to complete, but visitors can stay in the zoo until it closes at 9pm.

Time to get those jumpsuits out THIS last month has been a busy one for me with work events so I have had to look my best and what better way than by being dressed for some of my occasions by the famous Liverpool designer (Mary) Ku Spendlove. Mary has been dressing Liverpool fashionistas for many years now and her designs are just a dream! And the fabrics that she has in her shop are to die for! So many gorgeous lace pieces and sequins perfect for any up and coming Christmas nights out. As Mary makes everything to measure you can be sure that she will recommend something that not only complements your shape but you can add your own personal touch to it as well. I’ve got to say Autumn/Winter are my fav times of the year when it comes to night outs…. that’s because it’s jumpsuit season!!! You can be done all in the one go and
LIFE ‘n’ STYLE
with JADE AINSWORTH
you’re not worrying about covering your legs in tan. They are just so easy yet figure flattering at the same time. So this month I have decided to bring to you these four amazing jumpsuits to cover all price budgets…..and also a dress for those of you with fabulous pins! Unfortunately I wasn’t blessed with these so I have to be selective when getting the thunder thighs out!! Fishnet Mesh Insert Jumpsuit (£35) Strut your stuff in this fishnet number from Missguided. It has a sexy fishnet plunge but is fully covered so if you’re someone who feels the cold (or have forgotten to put your tan on!) then this is the one for you. I paired mine with black shoe boots from Kurt Geiger and a clutch. Lace Cut Out Halter Jumpsuit (£250) I saw this in Ku Spendlove shop and tried it on... I instantly fell in love! I love anything lace. I have done for a number of years now (if you read my blog or column on a regular basis you will have
http://www.jadeainsworthgossip.co.uk
come to realise it’s a bit of an obsession!). There’s just something about it that I find so so sexy but classy at the same time. This can be made in black or cream and can also be altered to a shape that suits your own style and figure.
Chiffon Overlay Jumpsuit (£35) I wore this one piece from Missguided and loved it!! It had a classic, bold and fierce feel to it. I got so many lovely compliments. I teamed this wide leg number with killer heel black shoe boots and a matching statement Channel Clutch. Black Lace Sequin Jumpsuit (£280) This is one that I wore for an awards ceremony by Ku Spendlove. Being a bit of a magpie when I saw lace and sequin in the same fabric, I thought……this is a bit of me!! This has a lovely Christmas feel because of the sparkle so is great for any Xmas nights out and can also be made in white and gold. Lace Dress With
Large Frills (£240) If jumpsuits aren’t your thing and you’re looking for a dress, I wore this Lace Dress with Large Frills. It was a new design that had only just come out, so I was privileged to be the first person to see and wear this. The attention to detail was spot on. I love anything that has a ruffle and is off the shoulder - great if you’re like me and smaller on the top to the bottom. I think it looks very flattering and girly but classy at the same time. So when I spotted both these jumpsuits I instantly fell in love. I tried them on and they both fitted perfectly.

Can you give a golden oldie the home she longs for? STAFF at Dogs Trust Merseyside are looking for a special home for an Old Age Pooch (OAP) who was found abandoned and wandering the streets. Ten-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Thelma, arrived at the Rehoming Centre in Huyton a few weeks ago and the team have fallen in love with her. Jake Flatman, Dogs Trust Merseyside Rehoming Centre manager, said: “It’s especially sad when older dogs come to us and the fact that Thelma was found as a
stray is heartbreaking. She deserves a second chance to enjoy home comforts and lots of love! “Sometimes older dogs get overlooked, but there are so many advantages to adopting an older dog. “They often need less exercise but are as much fun, they’re used to living in a home and their personality is already shaped so new owners can really understand and appreciate the dog, or dogs, that they are welcoming into their family.” Thelma loves to get out
and about, although the team say it’s sometimes tricky putting her lead on as she’s jumping around so much! She needs to be the only dog in the home and can live with children aged 12 and above. If you think you can offer Thelma the home she deserves, please contact the team at Dogs Trust Merseyside on 0300 303 0292 or visit the centre at Whiston Lane, Liverpool, L36 6HP. Unbeaten start for River under 11s and 12s ... RIVER Juniors FC have got off to the best possible start in the Walton and Kirkdale JFL with a 100 per cent record in their first six games. The highlight was a great match against Predator where the boys ran out narrow 3-2 winners. A superb strike from Nathan Doforo from all of 25 yards was the highlight of the season so far with an unstoppable swerving shot that had keeper Storey, who is coincidentally River Juniors’ Saturday keeper, baffled. The winning goal by Ally Trapasso was made by the pass of the season so far by Harvey Edgar, who split the Predator defence with an inch-perfect ball for Trapasso to tuck away. Che Trapasso has been in devastating form with goals in every game so far this season, along with goal machine Sam Roche. Big wins against Quarry Green Giants 13-1, Knowsley South 7-0 and Northern City 8-1 have been a joy to watch. In the Alice Petricca u12s division, where the boys play up a year, they have also remained unbeaten, with the
one draw coming against rivals Athletico Warriors in a great 3-3 game. The boys were fantastic in that game as they were missing three keys players, two of whom are on trial with Liverpool and Everton, so were unable to participate while playing for the Premier League clubs. Recent wins against Mossley Hill 9-0 (Jamie Dunne hattrick) and Viking Colts 4-0 have been very impressive. Prior to that there was a thriller with Green Park away which ended with a narrow 3-2 win for River. A superb 3-0 win earlier in the season against a really good Hurricanes side set the marker in what was a tremendous performance, with Murphy in defence, Kamara and Roberts in midfield and Pollard in attack all playing particularly well on the day. Team: D. Jones, J. Storey, G. McPartland, S. Clay, C. Trapasso, A. Trapasso, C. Murphy, N. Doforo, K. Kamara, S. Smith, H. Edgar, L. Roberts, S. Pollard, S. Roche, J. Dunne.

Promising start to season for Alder FC By Peter Harrison
DURING the summer a lot of activity has taken place at the club, as the teams have restructured to reflect the desire to achieve two teams competing in the Premier Division. The team competing last year in the Premier Division has now been renamed Liverpool Nalgo – which is a throwback to the original name of the teams that played at the then named Nalgo club. The team has got off to a great
start and at the time of writing is unbeaten in five league games and a successful Challenge Cup victory. New secretary Gilbo has been on fire, netting four goals, with regular marksman Paul O’Hare adding to the score sheet. An extra time victory in the Challenge Cup against Billinge sees them face Eli Lilley in the next round and the league victories have been against Alumni, Byron and South Sefton. The first division team, still playing under the Alder banner,

have had a mixed start. The opening league fixture against British Rail, on the Walton 3G pitch, saw a 4-2 defeat, despite Antony Barnes netting twice. They have also progressed to the second round of the Challenge Cup with a 1-0 victory over Edge Hill Boys Club (Shaun Davis the marksman) and face a stiff test against Rainhill Town from the West Cheshire League. Here’s to a successful and enjoyable season!
