WALK 4 LIFE – RAISING FUNDS FOR THE LINDA McCARTNEY CENTRE We were really touched by an email we received from LINK reader Cathy Clements, who tells us her own story: “My name is Cathy Clements. I am 55 years old, and I have 4 sons and 3 grandchildren. In March 2011,
I joined the Liverpool Catholic Ramblers Association (LCRA) and in August 2012 I was lucky enough to travel to Zakopane in Poland where I achieved one of the most amazing things of my life: I managed to walk up a mountain called Kaspowry Wierch

which is about 6500 feet high. I had a victory photograph done at the summit and felt totally exhilarated. Less than a month later, I went for a routine mammogram and it was discovered that I had a malignant tumour in my left breast. I have never known such fear and terror and am still in shock at the way this has happened. I had to have a lumpectomy and radiotherapy at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Fazakerley. I can’t thank the staff enough for the care I received and I will never forget the wonderful people I have met along the way”. “Now it’s time to give something back - I approached my friends at the LCRA about the possibility of raising funds for the Linda McCartney Centre and they agreed to me arranging a sponsored walk up Snowdon on June 23rd. We are still

in the planning stages but are hoping to take a couple of coach loads. It is advertised on our Facebook site (LCRA Open Group), on the Linda McCartney site and on http://www.rlbuht.workwithus.org/ You don’t have to be a member of the Ramblers to join in, just someone who wants to take part and be willing to raise sponsorship and/or to sponsor us. We will be leaving from outside the Museum (back of St. Georges Hall) at 9am. All are really welcome but I would advise people to check our Facebook page for details just in case anything changes. I hope readers of The LINK decide to join us, or that they may be kind enough to sponsor us. Cancer affects everyone and we need the technology to be ready for it and all the money we raise will go to the new unit which is due to open in the future”.

Dusk fell as the three gardeners spread tiny blue pellets over the neat flower beds full of young marigolds and other tender blooms. Suddenly a man burst out of a bush, running and waving his arms. He shouted hoarsely: “Stop this at once – leave them alone”. Before the gardeners could react the intruder had snatched their boxes of slug pellets and vanished into the shrubbery. At home he slumped into his favourite chair and told his long-suffering wife about this latest escapade. Bertram Stone was a man who loved slugs. He had taken it upon himself to protect his beloved gastropods by direct action, setting up the Slug Protection Society to achieve his aims. Although the group had a manifesto and code of conduct he had not succeeded in recruiting any other members. Alice was sympathetic and supportive, of course, but had not signed up. She actually loathed the slimy intruders
that ran riot in their garden where only hardy ferns and shrubs grew. She tolerated the endless hours her husband spent in the Sluggery, a large greenhouse where every species of British slug was kept in secure comfort. He would often pore over illustrations of slugs with a magnifying glass clutched in white-gloved hands. Bertram’s mission had evolved from his days with the
Liverpool Society of the Time Rich. It was their project counting the sea shells in Red Wharf Bay that had been the catalyst. “What does it all mean?” he had asked himself after spending interminable hours poring over half an acre of sand. The following week he decided what to do while working in the shop nobody visited. Aspark of inspiration, a flash of penetrating insight made him realise that slugs – those most
unloved creatures – would become his mission. A week after his audacious pelletsnatching raid he was sitting reading the paper to the buzz of a solitary bee. Giant Killer Slug Poised To Create H a v o c i n Yo u r Garden screamed the headline with a picture of a fat slug consuming a tomato. Bertram was moved to tears of compassion. He read that the Spanish Stealth Slug had been

his usual bedtime drink. The greenhouse was silent as Alice nervously opened the door.
He released them into a special enclosure and watched with loving, devoted eyes.
She gasped as she saw two feet sticking out from behind a water butt. Bertram was lying of his back, his lifeless eyes staring at the moon.
Three nights later he did not return for

NEW BIKE RIDES SPRING UP Liverpool people are being urged to get active this spring with a series of new evening bike rides being offered as part of the city’s free cycling programme. Successful initiative Cycle Liverpool South, which already runs free guided bike rides every Sunday, is adding a new date to the weekly cycling calendar, with extra rides being put on every Tuesday evening at 6pm, from 9 April until 24 September. It’s giving people the chance to take advantage of the lighter evenings to get fit and healthy and discover the city on two wheels. Run by sustainable transport organisation Sustrans, the family-friendly rides take in the sights and sounds of south Liverpool, using local cycle routes to visit places like the Mersey Promenade, Calderstones Park, Speke Hall and Speke Garston Coastal Reserve. The guided rides welcome cyclists of all abilities, with trained volunteer cycle leaders on hand to help improve people’s confidence and develop their cycling skills.
Liz Connell, one of the volunteer ride leaders, said: “Cycling is such a sociable activity and has changed my life! It has made me fitter and given more energy. The fun I have with people of all ages is fantastic and the places we have discovered are amazing!â€? Cycle Liverpool’s South’s extended programme means the rides now take place: • every Tuesday at 6.00pm meeting at Mossley Hill Hospital Car Park, Park Avenue, Aigburth. • every Sunday at 10.30am – also meeting at Mossley Hill Hospital Car Park. Rides last for approximately 90 minutes - except for the ride on the last Sunday of every month, which is two to three hours long and is designed for more confident cyclists who want to explore further - visiting the likes of Liverpool Loop Line, Croxteth Hall and Hale Lighthouse. The rides are open to all, but under-18’s should be accompanied by an adult and par-
ticipants must have a roadworthy bike. If you don’t have a bike, a limited number of pool bikes are available to book in advance by calling Alice on 07799 037044 or e-mailing Alice.Rickwood@sustrans.org.uk, or at www.facebook.com/CycleLiverpoolSouth For more info about all the free cycling programmes on offer in Liverpool, visit www.liverpool.gov.uk/cycling and see the ‘Bike Rides’ section.

Les Panther founded his family business Whiston Carpets & Blinds back in 1987, since when the business has established itself and grown based on the simple belief that service, quality and competitive prices all add together to result in customer satisfaction and repeat business. Les and his brother Danny still run the business along with several other family members, making Whiston Carpets and Blinds a family business you can trust to give you the best service and prices in Liverpool. Les told The LINK: “We have one of the most impressive showrooms on Merseyside and this ensures that we are able to cater for all customers’ requirements. We have a vast selection of win-
dow blinds on display and by dealing with all the UK’s major fabric manufacturers it means we have styles, colours and textures to suit all tastes and requirements. Quality is of course absolutely vital and we believe that here at Whiston Blinds we manufacture the best blinds on Merseyside, only using the Louvolite blind system which is the best available. becoming rich almost overnight. West Derby, centred on its ancient village, became an area for high-class residential development for the merchant classes. There was a building boom between 1840 and 1880 with many stylish mansions and
Sandfield Park in West Derby was laid out around the Old Hall which still stands at the centre of this exclusive residential estate. Solid sandstone gates protected the park’s privacy – tolls were charged on non-residents’ vehicles, even bicycles.

South American merchant Joseph Edwards built Gwalia (also known as Sandfield Tower - pictured) overlooking Moss Lane, which would later be widened to become Queens Drive. It was an imposing and soundlybuilt house, probably constructed with
stone from nearby quarries in Stoneycroft. The tower had sweeping views across town and country. About 100 years ago big houses fell out of fashion. They needed to be run by large numbers of servants, fetching and carrying up and down numerous stairs. The demand for smaller homes saw many mansions demolished between 1920 and 1970 until new laws prevented the demolition of nationally-important listed buildings.
The receding tide of wealthy individuals left big listed houses such as Gwalia beached like great whales. It is astonishing that this wonderful house has remained empty, derelict and apparently unloved for more than 30 years in a prime area of Liverpool. • Join the West Derby Society at the West Derby Courthouse (built 1586) in the Village - open 2 pm to 4 pm e v e r y S u n d a y, April to October.

ORANGE BUTTERFLY is the story of Amy Simmonds and her seemingly perfect life. Amelia has a mother who dotes on her, a father whose love for her knows no bounds and the love of her childhood friend Nicholas. She also has
a beautiful and ambitious sister who is full of hate and indignation. Set in Birmingham, England, the story takes a sudden twist when a domestic ac-
cident lands Amy in hospital and in a coma. Several months later, she wakes up to a new life. One in which all the layers of lies and deceit in Amy’s life have been
stripped away. In the dark times that follow, she searches for light; the kind only truth brings. This search leads Amy back to the place it all began; the colourful city of Port

SOUTH GO UP AS CHAMPIONS! by Jim Stanway A 7-2 home win over Maghull Reserves saw South Liverpool FC clinch the West Cheshire League Second Division title and finish at least four points clear of their only rivals, Mallaby. Two goals from Alex Woodcock and a hat-trick f ro m C a m e ro n Dalton added to goals from Matt Lowe and Kevin Martin to complete the rout. South’s dynamic strikers, Woodcock and Dalton, scored 74 goals between them, the former scoring 38 goals and the latter 36 - a phenomenal effort from the pair and a crucial element of South’s title win. Indeed, after losing 2-1 to AFC Bebington Athletic at the beginning of April (an incredible game in which Bebington scored two penalties but had no shots on target in the whole match!), South won their last eight league matches to ease clear of all their rivals. In that period, the team scored 36 goals including an 8-0 thrashing of bottom club Mersey Royal and the team made history by becoming the first club to win the 3rd and 2nd divisions in successive seasons, and scored a mouth-watering 111 goals in 30 league games. The reserve team finished a creditable sixth in the 3rd Division of the West Cheshire League, in their first season in the league, and might have
done better if their leading scorer Mitchell McNally had not had two lengthy spells out of action through injury. They reached the final of the divisional cup and in an exciting match at Cammell Laird they lost 5-3 to league champions Redgate Rovers after extra-time. South started the final in fine style and were 2-0 up after half an hour with goals from Francis Evans and Gerard Forde. An Evans header put them 3-2 up with minutes to go but they were unable to hold out to the final whistle. And Redgate proved too strong in extra time. The team can be proud of their efforts, however. The youth team’s season ended in anti-climax and controversy: having achieved a goalless draw against Bootle to eliminate their opponents from the title race, a 1-1 draw with their other rivals Gateacre appeared to have clinched the league title. However, a failure to fulfil an earlier fixture resulted in a 3point deduction and Gateacre were back in the race. A missed penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Gateacre left the opposition needing to win both their final two games to win the league and at the time of writing one of their opponents, Custys, have failed to fulfil the fixture and the league have awarded Gateacre three points with an away match at Vauxhalls to play.

ALDER FC CUP FINAL GLORY by Peter Harrison
The first team crowned the end to a great season by beating Collegiate 2-0 in the final of the Roy Wade Cup. In a match played at Ford Motors ground in Cronton, the uneven playing surface initially proved a leveller for both teams. Alder started the stronger side and Antony Wong played a great ball through for Paul O’Hare who was unlucky with his effort. Alder were then unlucky to have a penalty appeal dismissed when Antony Wong appeared to be fouled in the area after a searching run. Full backs Mick Roberts and Gary Tynan were
pushing up strongly on the flanks. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Jobo seemed to be chasing a lost cause down the left flank. He managed to resist two challenges and cut inside with his low shot beating the Collegiate keeper to open the scoring. Collegiate, with Tom Owens prominent in midfield, then took the game to Alder and a succession of corners saw them skim the crossbar. The Alder centre back pairing of John Boardman and John Elias were immense down the middle as all efforts were thwarted. When called upon Scott was looking a safe pair of hands in goal and Joe
Reynolds was holding the central midfield together with a strong performance. The second half again saw a period of Alder pressure, much to the
delight of their travelling fans who were encamped in the bar and stand. Timmy Naylor and Keith were making probing runs down the wing but with 20 min-
utes left the game was still in the balance. Guy came on as substitute to provide further problems up front and the last 15 minutes saw the introduction of Antony
Barnes. The game was won with 5 minutes left when Antony Barnes turned his man and rifled a shot into the net that left the Collegiate keeper stranded.
Pictured are the victorious team with manager Gordon Lee, trainers Dave Chizo and Ryan, committee members Paul Barnes chairman, big Norman and myself as Treasurer. A special thanks to all the supporters who made the trip and cheered the lads on, with Parker and Bracken voted the loudest supporters of the night.
STONEYCROFT VETS WIN PROMOTION AT FIRST ATTEMPT by Mick Titherington
Stoneycroft Vets, in their first full season in the Zingari Combination, showed class and commitment to win promotion at the first attempt and were just pipped to top spot by an excellent Allerton side. The team will now play their football in the first division of the Vets section of the Combination. The achievement in gaining promotion is a testimony to the team’s ability and work ethic with a never-say-die attitude. Delighted officials and supporters of the club all paid tribute to the tenacity and teamwork shown by the players in a hard-fought campaign that turned
into a remarkable achievement. Team manager, Gary Heaney, declared “Obviously with it being our first season we’re delighted to have won promotion”. Although this was a team success there were individual performances worthy of note: John Marshall netted twenty-two times from his midfield slot and this was matched by forward Gary Hughes, turning them into an amazingly prolific goal scoring duo. Billy Mangan turned out in a variety of positions and put in sterling performances and never let the team down. All at the club were particularly pleased that the Vets had been able to move up to the top tier, given that it
was the team’s first year in existence, and has proved to be the bright spot of the season. Club Chairman Kenny Morrison commented: “The Vets’ performance has been outstanding and they should be congratulated on their achievement. I am delighted for them. I believe it vindicates our decision to start a Vets side and I hope their success continues and spreads to our other teams”.
Pictured left: Back row: Ste Caples, Ste Burquest, Peter Renner, Tony Smith (Lffy), Mick Whittaker, Joey Burns, Kev Hamer, John Bulger, Carl Lam, Gary Heaney (The Manager) Front row: Tommy Whittaker, John Marshall (Captain), Billy Mangan, Gary Hughes, Warren Cassidy, Andy McClone, Keiran Marshall (Club Mascot). Players missing: Tony bulger, Neil Verdin, Mark Robson, Lee Hughes.
