The Molyneux Cross, perhaps disThe Second World War was at its height and played at the Battle of Hastings where the many of the staff from the big house were doing family’s Norman ancestor distinguished their duty for King and country. himself, can be seen around the Village.

The Countess of Sefton became a familiar sight driving her pony and trap up the long drive from Croxteth Hall into West Derby Village.

Here she would alight with her shopping basket and visit the various shops in the Village including Brook’s, the high-class grocery on the corner of Mill Lane. The Countess took to her wartime chores with zest – doing the shopping would have been unthinkable in her youth when servants were plentiful. Lady Sefton had lost her younger son Cecil Molyneux in the First World War - killed in the Battle of Jutland aged just 16. The senior line of the ancient Liverpool Molyneux family died out with the death of his brother Hugh, the last Earl, in 1972. He did not have a single close blood relative but the legacy of the family can still be seen in West Derby Village. The manor court was where the Molyneuxes sat in judgement for centuries (open every Sunday 2 pm to 4 pm until the end of October admission free).

The much-loved Village we know today is largely a Victorian creation built to enhance the new entrance to Croxteth Hall in the late 1850s. This watercolour by prolific Liverpool artist William Gawin Herdman shows how the Village originally looked before it was redeveloped. The old chapel and various other buildings were torn down to achieve the open aspect we know today. West Derby Village has always been a shopping area although today there is perhaps a greater focus on non-retail businesses. Another chapter in the long and distinguished history of the Village opens on Saturday 2 June when a farmers’ market is scheduled between 9 am and 2 pm. Visitors can buy locally grown and produced foods in a community-based market environment. Among the special guests are some of the favourite animals from Croxteth Hall Home Farm. I will be giving guided tours of the Village including the courthouse, stocks, drinking fountain and monument. • Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 16 May at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.
