when he died in June 1917. Harry, a private in the South Wales Borderers died in April 1918. Both were aged 19. • Private Frank Edwards, King’s Liverpool Regiment, lived at 35 Deysbrook Lane. He died on the Somme in July 1916, aged 22. • Lieutenant Lewis Mogridge’s parents lived at 12 Crosby Green. He served in both the King’s and the RAF and died in April 1918, aged 31. • Rifleman Henry Reynolds, Gloucestershire Regiment, lived at 18 Russian Drive. He was 21 when he died in France in June 1916. • Private William Stagles, died aged 19 in October 1918, serving with the Cheshire Regiment. His parents lived at 30 Quarry Road. • Henry Wright, of Oak Lane, was a lance corporal in the King’s and died aged 27 in January 1918. Many of those commemorated on the memorial are buried in war cemeteries in France and Belgium. Others have no known grave. There are 170,000 war graves from both World Wars in 12,000 cemeteries and churchyards throughout the United Kingdom. For example, Yew Tree Cemetery contains 35 First World War graves and 65 from the Second World War.

• Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 19 February at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.

Hundreds of people gathered forthe unveiling of the new war memorial in West Derby Village. The moving ceremony in June 1921 commemorated 123 servicemen who gave their lives in the First World War. Most in the crowd had lost loved ones or knew someone who had died in the conflict which ended just three years before.

Some walked, others came on bicycles or pushed babies in prams. Children perched on walls to get a better view. This, like all commemorations held around the memorial ever since, was a day to remember the fallen. It was echoed throughout the country and at countless memorials around the world, remembering the millions who died in the global fight for freedom. Among the youngest was the Hon Cecil Molyneux, a midshipman who

died aged just 16 in the Battle of Jutland. The memorial stands at the entrance to the drive leading to his home, Croxteth Hall. He was buried at sea.

AMONG OTHERS REMEMBERED ON THE MEMORIAL ARE: • Brothers Harry and Thomas Stanfield of 2 Norris Green Road. Thomas was a private in the Lancashire Fusiliers

Hello Everyone Welcome to the February edition of theLINK Your favourite Local Independent Advertiser and remember the LINK goes into homes!!!!!

Well, it’s February already! Where does the time go? Don’t know about you but we rather like this time of year because the light nights are getting nearer. Don’t you just hate the grey mornings and the dark nights, although we can’t complain as this year has been very mild here in Liverpool so far. Fingers crossed!

Dundee to live-in at the Greens. They had three daughters of a similar age. Alice, the youngest, screamed loudly in the morning room. Jessie, who was tending the fire, saw the 10-yearold shuddering in a corner. “Don’t brush it off,” urged Jessie. “It’s a money spider. If it lands on you it means good fortune.” Alice squashed it. Despite this, the two became close friends and Alice would confide in the older girl.

Later that day Jessie was darning socks when she noticed a tiny spider crawling on her arm. Two days later a letter containing a 10 shilling postal order arrived from her aunt wishing her well in the new job. Jessie smiled, spent half the money on pretty clothes and put the rest in the Liverpool Savings Bank. Jessie decided she loved spiders and would spend idle moments trying to get them to crawl on her. Some did but with neg-

The spider briefly explored the glittering surface of a turquoise broach Jessie had bought at a jumble sale for tuppence. Afew days later Mr Thorpe, a jeweller friend of the Greens, spotted the broach and offered Jessie five pounds for it. A canny girl, she asked for five guineas and soon had a crisp five pound note and

five shiny shillings in her purse. She had never had so much money. Jessie spent the five shillings and put the rest in the savings bank. Alice’s passing was not totally unexpected. A sickly child, she caught pneumonia on the New Brighton ferry and was quickly gone. Jessie helped to lay her out ready for the funeral, a dignified ceremony attended by many of Alice’s school friends. That night, as Jessie prepared to go to bed, an enormous spider landed on her wrist. The plump creature plodded about for about 10 minutes as Jessie watched entranced. It then disappeared under the curtains. “Alice always loved this and we know she’d want you to have it,” Dr Green told Jessie. The large oil painting of three puppies had hung over Alice’s bed. Jessie was delighted but left the Greens shortly afterwards for a better position. She discovered the painting was a lost work by George Stubbs and sold it for 500 guineas. After the war the Greens moved out of their villa and Jessie moved in. • Read my next Strange Tale – Annie on the Ivories – in the March Link.

February has come round again and, as usual, the 14th will bring both delight and despair to lovers everywhere.

MY FUNNY VALENTINE by Colette Mckenna (Moira’s sister)

But who exactly was Valentine? And why does this particular saint cause more havoc than Cupid all these centuries later? The answer is that we can only guess at his real identity, and that he is probably a composite of several early Christian martyrs. What we do know, though, is that February has long been a month connected with romance and St. Valentine has been connected with both. One legend says that

Say you saw Valentine was a priest (3rd Rome AD Claudius II). The emperor believed that marriage distracted too many young men from their military obligation, but Valentine continued to solemnize marriage in spite of the ban and was put to death, so becoming the patron saint of lovers. Other versions have Valentine as the saviour of imprisoned Christians, or even as a prisoner himself. The story goes that the gaoler’s daughter used to visit him, and before he was martyred, he sent her a letter - “from your Valentine”. So we may never be sure of his true identity, but

it in the LINK we do know that he was sympathetic, heroic, and, above all, romantic. Other possibilities are that the date commemorates his death (in about 270AD), and that naming the saint’s day was an attempt to “Christianize” the pagan Lupercalia festival, in which the Romans celebrated the start of Spring. This was when, in addition to a lot of “Springcleaning”, they performed fertility rites to Faunus the God of Agriculture and remembered Romulus and Remus, who founded Rome. The name “Lupercalia” is a reminder that the twins were reared by the she-wolf. Part of the festivities involved young men and women placing their names in a large urn and, in the “lottery” which followed, lads picked names from the urn; the result was couples pairing up for a year, which frequently resulted in marriage. Around 478AD, Pope Gelasius put a stop to the lottery and declared 14th February St. Valentine’s Day. By the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France, and it may be that their belief was that Feb 14th was the day the birds chose their mates, the idea that

mid February was an ideal time for romance. The oldest known Valentine in existence is believed to be a poem, now in the British Library, written by Charles, Duke d’Orleans to his wife while he was in the Tower of London after his defeat at Agincourt. Several years later, King Henry V hired a writer called John Lydgate to compose a Valentine note to Catherine de Valois. In Britain the saint’s feast day began to be popular from the seventeenth century and, by the mid eighteenth century, all social classes had acquired the charming habit of exchanging small tokens of affection or handwritten notes to lovers or friends. The Nineteenth Century saw mass-produced printed cards coming into fashion and with a cheaper, more reliable postal service, the practice of sending “ Va l e n t i n e ” c a r s spread throughout Europe and America. The current estimate is that 1 billion Valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second-biggest cardseller of the year, only eclipsed by Christmas. So it seems that love really is, as the old song says “The oldest and the latest thing”. Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

CROFT FAIL TO GAIN THE POINTS IN SPIRITED DISPLAY by Mick Titherington WATERLOO DOCK 3 STONEYCROFT 1 continued from page 20 visitors’heads dropped after such a cruel blow and they began to tire, conceding two late goals as any potential points gain slipped away. Disappointing as the result was, the Croft players can hold their heads high and take solace in the manner in which they performed. Walker and Jewell are youngsters with great potential. Andy Wright must be one of the best shot stoppers around.

Stalwarts Currie and Finnegan turned in another brilliant display to show they truly are the real deal. But it is points that make prizes and the Croft have to start getting them from somewhere to salvage their season. Stoneycroft: Wright; Wafer, Finnegan, Currie; S.Baker; E . To compound the problem, late arrivals necessitated the team sheet to be changed just prior to the kick off to ensure they started with a full complement. So with over 20 players unavailable it must have been with some trepidation that they faced a strong inform Waterloo Dock side that has designs on the championship. Boss Kirkpatrick, had to include himself in the starting line-up and was forced to move his captain, Paul Finnegan, from midfield into the back three, introducing teenagers Callum Walker and Paul Jewell into central midfield roles. Given the restriction of choice the performance from his team needs to be commended as they showed determination and a competitive spirit in an overall competent display which saw them take the lead in the 31st minute with a well hit drive from Walker. With Finnegan and Currie in outstanding form - these two would grace any team in the league and beyond followed closely by Joey Wafer, backed up by keeper Andy Wright, the Croft defence presented a formidable resistance to an eager Dock side

striving to get back on terms. Indeed, they were able to repel the home side’s attacks relatively comfortably until the 75th minute,

when the referee awarded the Dock a free kick just outside the Croft goal area. The kick was duly converted to break the
