SANDERS OF THE MERSEY by Stephen Guy, West Derby Society

The soldier suffered serious face wounds as he fought in the First World War which

left him slightly disfigured for life. Leslie Banks had a privileged start to life in West Derby and must have consid-

have a particular bonus in his chosen career as an actor. It left one side of his face partially scarred and paralysed. If necessary, the scarring could be covered by make-up and publicity photographs show few signs. When playing romantic or comic roles, Leslie could show the unmarked side of his face. He might reveal the damaged side, with its permanently-glaring eye, when playing dramatic roles or villains. Leslie played a number of criminal types in his success-

ered himself lucky to survive the carnage that claimed the lives of so many of his contemporaries. His injury was to

ful stage and film career, notably as Count Zaroff in The Most Dangerous Game movie of 1932. He rarely gave interviews but was proud to say he was from West Derby. Leslie was born in 1890 to company agent George Banks and his wife Emily at 38 Russian Drive, Stoneycroft. George was successful and headed George Banks & Co, sole agent for Hannay’s Patent Composition. His office was at 9 Redcross Street, in the city centre. In 1891 the family moved to Holly Bank in Bankfield Road. I remember this elegant villa, demolished in the 1960s to make way for the college. By 1895 George was describing him-

self as a merchant and in 1897 the family moved to The Coppice in Meols Drive, Hoylake. Leslie was a bright boy and, after attending Glenalmond College in Scotland, went up to Oxford. He considered entering the Church before settling on acting as a career. Leslie rose to the heights of his profession and appeared alongside the great-

est actors of the day, both in the theatre and on film. His screen appearances included starring roles in such classics as Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much, Fire Over England, Jamaica Inn, Laurence Olivier’s Henry V and David Lean’s Madeleine. Perhaps his bestremembered part is as Sanders in

Sanders of the River (1935) where he is pictured brandishing a pistol next to Paul Robeson. F a t h e r- o f - t h r e e Leslie collapsed and died while taking a walk in 1952. • Join the West Derby Society at its next meeting 7.30 pm on Wednesday 21 November at Lowlands, 13 Haymans Green, Liverpool L12 7JG.
