The hamlet was clustered around a wooded green with an ornamental chained fence at the junction of two roads bordered by farms, mansions
and cottages. Honey’s Green – better known as The Triangle – has been a feature of the area for generations. Acentury ago it had a very different atmosphere as a quiet
country backwater. When this tinted postcard (pictured) was produced in 1904 Town Row extended from West Derby Vi l l a g e t o T h e Triangle. The area saw mas-

sive housing development from the late 1920s after this part of Town Row was gentrified into Leyfield Road. At about the same time Back Lane was renamed Eaton Road. Doubtless building companies thought these more upmarket titles would help sell houses. The postcard shows the view towards what is now Blackmoor Park School. To the left, behind the trees, can be seen the outline of Leyfield Priory – a massive castellated mansion with a tower. The house and surrounding walls were made from sandstone excavated when the huge railway cutting was built between Edge Hill and Lime Street. Many other buildings and structures were made from the same source. Greenhouses can be

The cottage on the right is still there although there has been much infilling over the years as small holdings and gardens were developed. The Triangle was much larger than it is now – it was considerably reduced in size about 40 years ago. The green was once used for burying muchloved horses from neighbouring houses. When I attended Blackmoor Park in the 1950s there were still traces of outbuildings from Leyfield Priory on the site of The Bulldog. Leyfield Farm, its traditional barns and
outbuildings surrounded by semi-detached houses, stood almost opposite the school. One day there was great excitement as smoke billowed out of the farm – fire engines came rushing over with bells clanging. Our lollipop man wore a white coat, peaked black cap and a carried a large red sign saying CHIL-

Stephen Guy’s Forgotten Liverpool looks at some fascinating true stories in and around Merseyside. The Liverpool Link columnist’s 81page profusely-illustrated paperback reveals little-known facts gleaned from extensive research
and personal memories. B a s e d o n Stephen’s popular Saturday column Merseyside Tales in the Liverpool Echo, the book also includes a speciallycommissioned article about Lowlands. This Grade II-listed former merchant’s mansion in Haymans Green, West Derby, has s e r v e d a s We s t Derby Community Centre since 1957. Stephen is a director of the registered charity. More than 30 articles examine Liverpool’s early
history, the growth of the town into a major world city and port, the Victorian era, holidays and leisure, shopping, fashion and transport. Stephen, chairman of the West Derby Society, says: “Liverpool lies at the heart of a dynamic and inspirational region. “It grew from a quiet backwater into a bustling centre in a relatively short time, producing and attracting many talented and hard-working people. “Liverpool is

GET FIGHTING FIT 4 TIPS TO GET YOUR KIDS FITTER THIS WINTER by Paul Coshott 1. When it comes to getting your kids more active, sport with a ball probably comes to mind but some kids just aren’t into sports. Maybe try bringing your kids to my martial arts classes, or to a dance class or maybe try indoor climbing. You have to be patient and it might take a bit of trial and error until you find something your child
really enjoys. 2. Do something active as a family. Maybe go for a walk or a swim or a bike ride at weekends. 3. Become a role model for your child. Become more active, set goals and inspire your children. 4. This is only a suggestion but try and limit their TV viewing time. I have done a huge amount of work with kids and kids in care and I have never been 100% sure on the benefits of children having a TV in their room

The artist stared intently at the magnificent horse, frequently glancing down as he sketched the passive animal. Leonardo da Vinci would occasionally refer to notes that he had jotted down on another piece of paper. He wrote numbers and measurements on the drawing (pictured) which he added to a growing pile of similar studies. It was 1493 and Leonardo had been in Milan for several years working for powerful grandee Ludovico Sforza. This was to be his greatest sculpture – a colossal bronze statue commemorating Ludovico’s father Francesco. At last the preparatory work was complete and Leonardo was ready to cast the statue in bronze. First he made a fullsized clay model which reduced
everyone who saw it to a state of awe. Never anything so lifelike been seen, never had nature been so closely replicated by the hand of man. Privileged visitors stood in silence as Leonardo completed his clay masterpiece. Then war intervened. Bronze ordered for the statue was instead turned into cannons and other weapons. Leonardo fled Milan on the fall of his patron Ludovico. History records that French soldiers destroyed the wonderful horse when they occupied the city. However, a recently-discovered manuscript tells a different story. In 1734 the captain of the Liverpool merchant ship Neptune was on a voyage to Genoa with a cargo of cloth and pottery. Richard Hand had an enviable network of contacts gathered

JANUARY SALE STARTS THURSDAY 2ND JANUARY on his travels. It was during a ride into the remote countryside that he acquired pieces of a huge statue. Thinking they were Roman antiquities, he moved them by wagon to his ship where the crated fragments were loaded into the hold along with a consignment of wine. In Liverpool he invited his friend John Stubbs, an expert in horseflesh, to join him on the Neptune in dock. John brought along his 10-year-old son George, a boy already devoted to horses. As they watched, two crewmen lowered the sides of the crates. George was mesmerised by what he saw, marvelling at the grace of the horse’s head and the lifelike portrayal of the massive trunk and legs. “This is too good to be ancient Roman,” piped up
the precocious boy. His keen eyes took in every detail of the sculpture as he ran his hands over the smooth clay. “Be that as it may, I have a buyer in Ireland who collects such things – he’ll pay a handsome price,” said the captain. The crates were resealed and the visi-
tors departed. Next day the Neptune set sail on the high tide. A ferocious storm blew up in the Irish Sea and the Neptune was never seen again. Her figurehead and a few planks were washed up in a remote cove near Cork weeks later. George Stubbs grew up to be a great
painter whose horse studies rival Leonardo’s sketches. George, spurred on by his visit to the Neptune, made the study and portrayal of horses his lifelong work.

CROFT HOPE FOR BETTER THINGS IN 2014 by Mick Titherington continued from page 20 So when the Croft visited Litherland REMYCA a week later there was hope that they could build on the performance and come away with all three points. After a slightly shaky start they settled into a rhythm and began to play some nice football but were undone after 10 minutes by a through ball that split the middle of the defence and allowed the REMYCA winger to drive the ball past the despairing Donohue. The visitors responded by upping their game and dominated for most of the first half. Ten minutes into the restart their pressure was rewarded when a Paul Finnegan free kick hit the bar and Gary Allen was on hand to smash the ball into the net from short range to secure the equaliser. After that it looked like the Maiden Lane outfit were going to go on and win it, but, as has so often happened
this season, the gods conspired against them when the referee gave a penalty against Jack Kelsall. To make matters worse, after the penalty had been converted, straight from the kick off to restart the game a dreadfully misplaced pass allowed REMYCA to add to their lead. These moments of madness have been a common occurrence throughout Stoneycroft’s season so far and will have to be eliminated if they are to progress. Despite the reversal, manager Ross Kirkpatrick is pleased with the increased commitment and endeavour from his players and with some additions during the Christmas break has reason to be cautiously optimistic about the clubs fortunes in the New Year. One thing is certain - supporters of the club will be glad to see the back of 2013!
SOUTH REACH SEMI-FINAL by Jim Stanway
Although South Liverpool FC’s league form has faltered somewhat, they have reached the semi-final of the Liverpool County FA
Challenge Cup after defeating the Liverpool County Premier League Premier Division champions, We s t E v e r t o n Xaviers, 3-2 at Jericho
Lane. Leading 2-0 at half-time with goals from team captain Adam Rood and last s e a s o n ’s l e a d i n g goalscorer Alex Woodcock, South appeared to be coasting comfortably. However, visiting substitute Dean Williamson scored direct from a free-kick and there were several scares before South substitute Mike Thompson made a big difference.
One of his excellent corners was headed home by full-back Tom Stewart and although Xaviers scored a lastminute penalty, South are through to the semis for the first time in several years. Two home draws, a g a i n s t Va u x h a l l Motors Reserves and Hale, saw four points dropped as league leaders Maghull stole a march on South. The
top of the table clash at Maghull saw the league leaders beat South 4-0 and create a massive gap at the top and although South have four games in hand, Maghull are now 16 points clear. The 22 draw with Vauxhalls saw South go 2-1 up through goals by Gary Pollard and Adam Rood before the visitors snatched a draw with only minutes left.
The 3-3 draw with Hale saw South’s Cameron Dalton head home in injury-time to snatch a point despite dominating Hale for most of the game. The reserves crashed out of the LCFA Junior Cup at the quarter-final stage, losing 4-2 despite being 2-0 ahead at halftime through goals by team captain Neil Roach and leading
scorer Curtis Cummins. A2-1 home defeat to Capenhurst Villa Reserves has dented the team’s promotion hopes after successive 4-1 wins over Hale Reserves and Christleton Reserves. The youth team achieved their second win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Newton with goals from Matthew Read and Abdul Yusuf, the latter scoring on his de-
but with a superb header. Successive defeats against leaders Vauxhalls and an older, more experienced Mallaby side were both desperately close affairs and, overall, the team’s performances have been very encouraging as the boys adjust to life at youth level after winning the Tuebrook Junior League in record style last season.

This followed on from a 1-1 draw at home to Red Rum. Both games saw enforced changes due to injuries and non- availability but the performances from the teams fielded gave much cause for optimism. The Red Rum game saw a spirited display, full of grit and determination, in which the Croft dominated for long periods but failed to convert chances that c a m e t h e i r w a y. Keeper Carl Donohue, back in the team because of Andy Wright’s absence, was really unlucky when he made a superb save from the penalty spot only to see the penalty-taker slot the rebound home to put the visitors ahead. The Croft reaction was not to drop their heads but to redouble their efforts to get back in the game and it was fitting, if slightly fortuitous, when a Bruce Cromblehome effort was deflected into the net to draw the sides
