Broadgreen Road, originally called Petticoat Lane, was used by coaches between Liverpool and London. May Place (pictured) is one of the oldest surviving Liverpool merchant’s houses, build about 1768 when the town started its first direct coach services to the capital. now used by a housing association, has had many roles in its long history. When first built it would have enjoyed extensive views across the surrounding countryside. Old Swan businessman and historian James Hoult wrote in 1913 that it was a Catholic Reformatory for Girls: “It is directed by Sister of Charity and is doing good work.” He added that previous occupants included a slave-trader married to an Indian princess and a gentleman who had 20 children. The well-known Papayanni shipowning family resided there for a time. Another resident al-
lowed Methodist meetings in a garden out-house. Lord Derby’s chaplain ran a school in May Place but it never recovered after a pupil drowned in a pond. A wholesale grocer called Walker was a gourmet who housed
