The monthly independent advertiser 15,000 copies 12,000 into Homes 3,000 into Businesses
BIG changes have been made to the Link from today….and YOU, our readers and advertisers alike, are the winners. You can see today’s issue is much bigger, brighter and will be seen in a lot more homes which are being added to our growing family. Also from today the Link becomes the local free title being delivered to more homes in West Derby than any other regular publication. From today 12,000 homes will receive a free copy of the Link in addition to a further 3,000 copies being made available at business premises and local supermarkets. That’s a total of 15,000 copies being distributed EVERY month. And it’s all down to the hard work and determination of two ladies….Moira Hesketh and Dawn Williams, who had a dream of establishing an entirely independent affordable advertising publication . Both highly skilled in the world of newspaper advertising Moira and Dawn have not only achieved their ambition but are quick to recognise that improving their publication is the number one priority. Take the size: Yes,
the Link is now Tabloid on very good quality newsprint and - if you have an eye for detail you will have noticed that it is stapled to provide an overall neat and easy to handle product. It goes without saying that you can’t stand still in any business these days. The improved benefit for advertisers is that your message will reach a lot more readers. When it comes to the cost for advertising space, the Link’s your best vehicle to get the right message across at the right price. For instance: An advertisement in the Link of 6.5cm deep x 9cm wide will cost from only £41.66 for 15,000 distribution compared with the cost of a same size advertisement with other local titles of £32 for only 2,000 distribution. The difference is that the Link costs only £2.77 per thousand copies compared to an astonishing £16.00 per thousand with others! How’s that for good business… One of the biggest improvements is for you, our readers. More space for your news and pictures. Yes, Moira and Dawn want to hear a lot more from YOU. If you are in a club like the scouts, brownies,
guides, women’s or district social and community organisations or sports clubs then they want to offer you FREE space to tell Link readers about your activities. The Link is opening up its columns for reports and pictures of your events and happenings. So if you’ve always fancied trying your hand at being a reporter then here’s your chance. It may be you want to tell people when something is going to happen or it may be you want to report on an event which has already been and gone in the weeks before the Link is published. That’s fine, but why not include a picture with your report as well? And it couldn’t be easier: Just write your report and send it to Moira and Dawn at the Link e-mail site at the end of this report, together with your name, whether you hold an official post with your organisation, and your telephone number. The only thing to remember is deadlines…the Link prints in the last week of each month for distribution a couple of days before the start of the next month. Play safe and plan ahead to get your “copy” in really early. You need to “Think the

Dawn Williams Link” needs to have your report before the middle of the month and you will be fine. Some of you might like to start the ball rolling by sending your views on your new-look Link. So how’s that for a good deal if you belong to a club, school or any
Moira Hesketh other organisation. It’s over to you now to help us make the Link even better and full of news of your own organisation. Remember the Link keeps you in touch with the people and essential businesses around you…thanks to two women who pushed
ahead with a plan to launch a title which they wanted to be truly independent. *Send e-mails to: westderbylink@yahoo. co.uk **Telephone Moira on 07930 654264 or Dawn on 07930 874594

Crowds turned out to welcome the popular prince as he arrived by royal train at the newly-opened station. Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, stepped down on to the red carpet at West Derby Station to be met by the Earl of Sefton and Lord Castlereagh. The Earl’s immaculate carriage, bearing his coat of arms, was drawn up in Mill Lane. The prince, Queen Victoria’s eldest son and the future Edward VII, was soon on his way to Croxteth Hall. As The Daily News reported at the time: “The royal party, who travelled by special train from Lincoln, were warmly greeted by spectators assembled at the station and the entrance to Croxteth Park.”
West Derby Station is pictured about 1930 with an electric tram rumbling past. It was 26 March 1884 when Bertie, as he was known, came to Liverpool for what would be a memorable Grand National. He was travelling with several cronies including Lord Hastings. Doubtless there was lots of animated talk at Croxteth Hall, over drinks and cigars, about which horse would win the great steeplechase. Victoria did not approve of Bertie’s lifestyle - he was involved in several society scandals – and she blamed him for his father Prince Albert’s premature death. The 1884 Grand National was to prove another slap in the eye for Bertie from his strict mother. continued on page 4
