Winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society's 2024 Instrumentalist of the Year Award, Jasdeep Singh Degun was born in Leeds, but his music evokes whole worlds, and his sitar playing… well, let’s just say that it has to be heard to be believed. Tonight at The Forum he joins the Orchestra and tabla virtuoso
Harkiret Bahra to perform his own Sitar
Concerto Arya – a lyrical, brilliantly imaginative tale of different musical cultures, united by a willingness to explore, and (above all) by the spirit of song. Carrying this spirit, children from Barrow primary schools also join with the Orchestra for a special performance of George Harrison’s Within You Without You.

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in Barrow
From filling The Forum with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to pop-up performances all across town, we’ve had an incredible and inspiring first year in Barrow-in-Furness.
November’s drawing in but here at The Forum it’s summer all over again! Mendelssohn’s heart turned somersaults when he arrived in the sunshine of Italy, but today his Italian symphony is just the starting point. Karel Deseure conducts Ravel’s dreamy Spanish fantasy, Poulenc’s witty Sinfonietta and Mozart’s ebullient Oboe Concerto – with the Orchestra’s very own Helena Mackie in the spotlight. It’s music that practically dances for joy.

Now, we’re doing it all again! We’re so excited to present the programme for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s second year in Barrow, where once more we’ll be collaborating with local organisations and partners to bring something for everyone.
The Orchestra, together with sitar player Jasdeep Singh Degun, will be kicking things off this year with a concert that explores major musical influences from Jasdeep’s concerto for sitar and orchestra, to the Beatles. Then, the Orchestra’s own Helena Mackie takes on Mozart’s Oboe Concerto. Chief Conductor Domingo Hindoyan returns in March to lead another epic work by Beethoven and a very special conducting challenge…
Of course, we’ll also have more musical extravaganzas for Under-5s, another series of pop-up performances and dementia-friendly concerts too.
Our Learning Team will be working with teachers across Barrow, organising exciting live performances and educational workshops in schools.
Over the last year, we’ve been overwhelmed by the support that Barrow audiences and organisations have shown Liverpool Philharmonic, and we were thrilled to see so many of our events sell out. But that means tickets for this year’s concerts won’t hang around long, so make sure you book now to avoid disappointment!

We’re inviting you to come along and join the Musical Professors in their laboratory! Claire Henry will work with their musicmaking machines to create musical experiments with players from our Orchestra.
These concerts introduce our youngest audiences to the different sounds of the orchestra through lively storytelling and musical fun. Barrow Library is fully accessible, and our audiences will enjoy wriggling and jiggling along to the music from comfy floormats.
The concert will last for approximately 1 hour and seating is unreserved.

Beethoven Violin Concerto
Beethoven Symphony No.3, ‘Eroica’
Domingo Hindoyan conductor
Veronika Eberle violin
Ludwig van Beethoven saw red when his hero Napoleon betrayed the revolution, tearing up the score of his Eroica symphony. That same energy pulses through every bar of this game-changing work, and Domingo Hindoyan certainly won’t hold back tonight. But Beethoven was a poet, too, and when Veronika Eberle plays his radiant Violin Concerto you’ll hear just how beautiful music can be.
