Completing today’s programme is something quite different – a dramatic and hard-hitting work by Hindemith.

October 1931: William Walton takes a huge choir and a giant orchestra, adds a couple of brass bands, and blasts British music sky-high. Belshazzar’s Feast is big, brassy, and utterly outrageous – now add the one and only Sir Bryn Terfel, and you’ve got a seriously impressive celebration of the human voice. Anna Meredith’s Nautilus and Mendelssohn’s gorgeous Violin Concerto – with international violin sensation Ning Feng returning as soloist – are the icing on the cake.

Danny Elfman is a legend of movie music, the man whose scores for Batman and Edward Scissorhands fused rock ‘n’ roll with orchestral technicolour to dazzling effect. His Percussion Concerto is a gripping way to get to know Colin Currie – as one critic put it, “surely the world’s finest and most daring percussionist”. And conductor JoAnn Falletta – an American in Liverpool – delivers a side-order of highkicking tunes and fascinating rhythms, courtesy of Aaron Copland and George Gershwin.

Knussen Ophelia Dances, Book 1

Berio Rendering

Manoj Kamps conductor

Inspired by unfinished symphonic sketches by Schubert, Luciano Berio decided to “cement the gaps” with his own musical reflections and restorations and created a 20th century classic. Oliver Knussen, inspired by Shakespeare’s Ophelia chanting “snatches of old tunes”, snatched snippets of Schumann and Debussy for his highly compressed set of dances. In the 21st century Elliott Carter’s last orchestral piece, a “series of short interrelated episodes”, is an often lyrical and moving farewell to life, whilst a similar dark beauty occupies the genre defying music of North West based Phoenix Rousiamanis. Manoj Kamps makes their debut with Ensemble 10:10.

A magical celebration of one of cinema’s most inventive duos. Tim Burton’s films conjure up captivating worlds, and the incredible musical imagination of Danny Elfman brings those stories to life. Outrageously tuneful, deliciously dark or just plain fantastical, there’s no film composer quite like him. Tonight, the Orchestra celebrate music and storytelling, performing works from Beetlejuice, Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands and more, all enhanced by visuals of original sketches, drawings and storyboards on the big screen.

December’s drawing in on Merseyside, but here at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall it’s summer all over again! Mendelssohn’s heart turned somersaults when he arrived in the sunshine of Italy, but today his Italian symphony is just the starting point for a whole afternoon of winter warmers. Karel Deseure conducts Ravel’s dreamy Spanish fantasy, Poulenc’s witty Sinfonietta, and Mozart’s ebullient Oboe Concerto – with the Orchestra’s very own Helena Mackie in the spotlight. It’s music that practically dances for joy.
