Kenya motorcycle riders will benefit from increased ride control, longer engine life, reduced noise and vibrations that currently afflict many motorcycle riders riding roughshod on the roads with poor quality and unproven engine oils. The Shell Advance benefits from decades of Shell’s presence in the Motorcycle Sports at the highest levels. Shell Advance are also the title sponsors of a number of Motorcycle Grand Prix, one of which is the Malaysian round of the World Championship held at the Sepang International Circuit, located on the outskirts of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

S

hell Advance, the leading oil partner in the International Motorcycle Sporting Circuit are entering Kenya with a bang. This time, Shell, through Vivo Energy Kenya, is introducing advanced motorcycle engine oils, to strengthen its longstanding presence as the lead supplier of engine oils. The presence of Shell Advance motorcycle oils will enable Shell and Vivo Energy to further engage with motorcycle consumers in Kenya, in addition to being a leading supplier of vehicle engine oils and other lubricants.

Securing your car

W

hile conventional alarms, steering wheel locks, ignition cut-offs, car tracking systems, and other anti-theft devices help deter thieves from breaking into your car or stealing it, there are some basic, common-sense measures that you can take to minimize the chances that your parked car will be targeted in the first place. These include:

1. Always lock all doors, close windows, and never leave your car running even if you’re going to be parked for a very short time. Remember that Kenya is not Dubai in the UAE! 2. Park in a well-lighted area. Find a space near the entrance of the place you are going to. Ensure the parking spot is also well lit and has a higher-traffic of people around the area. Avoid deserted and insecure parking spots. 3. Don’t leave any valuables in the car. Keep

6

MOTOR MAY 2014

any loose objects in the boot or in storage bins under the seat. A blanket covering things can be an obvious invitation for a break-in. Minimize the number of small objects in your car. They’re great bait for thieves. Another quick solution is to ensure that you tint most of your windows. 4. Choose an open, visible space. If you have a small car, try to avoid parking next to large trucks and SUVs, which gives thieves good cover from security cameras and passers-by. 5. Never hide spare keys in or around the car. Experienced thieves know all the hiding places for these small gadgets. 6. Get a locking fuel cap. If your car does not already have one, it helps prevent fuel siphoning and vandalism. 7. Use a sound system with a detachable face, or a sound system that can be removed

completely from the car. Sound systems are usually a welcome addition to items that invite thieves to a car. 8. Don’t lock your glove box, and don’t keep valuables in it. If your car is broken into, a locked globe box can be an invitation for an annoyed petty thief to tear your dashboard up to get it open. Do not store your car’s logbook in the glove compartment or anywhere else in the car. 9. Don’t ever think that your car is too old and worn to be the target of thieves. Most often, stolen cars are stripped for parts rather than for resale. Hence, the overall condition of the car makes little difference. High-tech alarm systems may prevent break-in attempts. However, the best protection against thieves is to make your car unattractive to them in the first place. Do not deliberately invite thieves to your car by wanting to be noticed.

Jump starting the car

I

f your car battery is discharged, you may be able to use jumper cables to jump start your car from another car with a working battery. If you can safely use jumper cables on your car, make sure that the battery on the working car has at least as much voltage as your own. As long as you hook up the cables properly, it doesn’t matter whether your car has negative ground and the other car has positive ground. To safely jump start the car, follow these steps: 1. Take out your jumper cables. It’s a good idea to buy a set of jumper cables and keep them in the boot. If you don’t have jumper cables, inquire from other car owners if they have a set of jumper cables. Buy jumper cables only from reputable motor boutiques. The ones sold on the highways are fake. 2. Place both vehicles in Park or Neutral and shut off the ignition in both cars. Engage both parking brakes as well. 3. Attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal of your car’s battery. It has “POS” or “+” on it, or it’s bigger than the negative terminal.

8

MOTOR MAY 2014

4. Attach the other red clip to the positive terminal of the other car. 5. Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the other battery. 6. Try to start your car. If it won’t start, make sure that the cables are properly connected and ensure that the other car’s engine has run for five minutes. Then try to start your car again. If it still won’t start, your battery may be beyond help and might need to be replaced. If the jump works and your car starts, don’t shut off your engine! Drive around for at least 15 minutes to recharge your battery. If the car won’t start the next time you use it, the battery isn’t holding a charge and needs to be replaced. The jumper cables could also be fake, hence unable to transmit power. If you are driving a car with a manual transmission, you can jump start it using the following steps: 1. Find a stretch of clear downhill road. 2. Fully depress the clutch and put the car in

first gear. 3. Turn the ignition to on. 4. Take your foot off the brake and start rolling down the hill. Ensure the clutch pedal is fully depressed. 5. Allow the car to gain more momentum as you go down hill. 6. Release the clutch quickly. You should feel the engine turn and start. If it doesn’t start the first time, depress the clutch and release it again. 7. If you don’t have a hill, get some of your buddies to give you a push and follow the steps above. Please note that if you have been jump starting your car more often than before, consider getting a new battery for your car, to avoid inconveniences that may also expose you and your loved ones to dangers, should the problem occur at night or in an isolated and deserted roads! Check the Service section for more on how to replace the car battery.

ith rising pump prices affecting the cost of owning a car, its worth looking into ways to cut other motoring expenses. One place to start is on the car’s insurance. All cars must be insured before they are allowed on Kenyan roads. However, many people just pick an insurer after they buy their first car and don’t look at the fine details of the motor policy for years, until bad luck strikes.

Below are some ways to find the right policy and cut on your premiums, while benefiting from comprehensive coverage: • Always do an annual rate check. Check rates from other companies to make sure you are getting the best deal. Check also the details of what is actually covered by your motor policy. • Pick a top-rated insurer. Always opt for companies that do well when it comes to dealing with claims, payments, and non-claim problems. This is information you can find from friends, family members, insurance agents and other sources of media. Firms who win awards from reputable bodies are safe bets to start with. Firms that have benefited from these ratings include UAP, CIC and Britam among others. • Set the right deductable. A higher deductible reduces your premium, but you have to pay

Simply put, minimal coverage gives you minimal protection. • Report reduced mileage. If you’ve changed jobs, are now working at home, or have become unemployed, call your insurer. By driving less, you may qualify for a lower premium.

• Watch crash repairs. Check to see where your insurer sends you for repairs, as the repair shop may push you to use cheaper replacement parts, rather than original equipment from the manufacturer. Non-OEM parts can fit poorly, are more prone to rust, and don’t necessarily meet safety standards, in addition to poor paintwork.

more out of pocket in the event of an accident. If you have a good driving record and haven’t had an accident that was your fault, you may want to gamble and opt for a higher premium. Firms such as Gateway insurance have a pay as you drive motor insurance cover. • Review your coverage. Check to make sure you have enough liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage. Over time, costs and risk increase, and so should your coverage.

• Choose the right car. Car damage and the cost for repair is a big part of the price of auto insurance. The rule here is that the more expensive the car is, the more you will pay for your insurance motor premium. Ensure that your car is also valued every year to ensure correct coverage based on the market value of the car. • Beware of scams. Crooks can rip off drivers with staged accidents, which could result in an insurance claim against you. To avoid this unpleasant scenario, follow good driving practices and if you are in a crash, photograph the crash scene and always call police to report the incident. Do not hit and run if involved in a road accident. • Take advantage of discounts. Discounts are available for drivers considered to be lower risk such as older, married, and/or long safe driving record or those who take a driver-training course. Anti-theft devices and certain safety equipment can also reduce your insurance cost. Always look for the insurance policy with nonclaim bonus. • Bundling insurance. Combining your auto and home insurance is another option to consider, but check out the total costs with and without combining policies to see which scenario is cheaper. CIC Smart Saver is one such product that offers you comprehensive cover, including death and disability. Britam Motor 24/7 accords you car hire while awaiting repairs to your car.

Auto Finance

What to do before getting a loan

F

or a successful car purchase, you need to get several things right: choose the right car, get a good price, and fund the purchase in the most affordable way. If you’re going to borrow for your car purchase, it pays to know how to get a great auto loan. Start thinking about your auto loan even before you start looking at cars. When you do some research ahead of time, you’ll improve your chances of getting a loan and a car that fits with your lifestyle. Plus, when it’s time to make a deal, you’ll be ready and you’ll be on the road that much more quickly. The following tips offer guidance in what to do before getting a car loan: Affordability Diligent budgeters already know this. However, most people don’t put enough thought into it before it’s too late. Get a clear idea of how much you can spend, down payment and monthly payments, before you start looking at cars. If you don’t chances are that you will end up with a loan that costs too much to repay and takes years to clear. Look at the big picture

12

MOTOR MAY 2014

The terms of your auto loan will determine how much you pay and how much it will cost. Remember that a low cost now may not mean low total costs for the entire loan repayment period. Figure out exactly what your loan will look like, month by month, year after year until the loan repayment period ends. This will let you know how much you’re spending on interest and how much you’ll still owe on any given date in the future. Consider insurance When you ask various lenders what they’ll offer you, you may find that you need insurance to get the best auto loans. The lender is concerned that something could happen to you and you won’t be able to pay them back. Having insurance might not be a requirement, but it might be helpful to have the details of any coverage you have available. The fact a lender knows that you have coverage, even if you don’t know how much, can be helpful in the process of getting a car loan. Numbers of lending insurance firms have recently introduced very innovative car insurance products, mostly covering comprehensive

losses, including riot and terrorism. It is prudent to protect your car investment by buying good quality car insurance, including the Britam Motor 24/7, UAP Motorsure or the CIC smart Save. Shop around This is simple but it is often overlooked. The most important point here is that you don’t have to get your auto loan from the dealers. In most cases your car dealer won’t have the best auto loan. By consulting with an alternate lender before stepping onto the lot, you’ll be armed with knowledge of what’s available to you and that gives you bargaining power. Avoid prepayment penalties Things change in life and flexibility is important. Buy an auto loan that is also be flexible. Find a lender that will allow you to make extra payments or pay off the loan entirely without any penalties. It’s important to read the fine print some penalties aren’t called “penalties.” Car loans galore in the market, including innovative assets finance from KCB and Barclays Bank.

Changing the car battery 4. Remove whatever devices are holding the battery in place. Remove any devices holding the battery, ensuring you have placed them in a safe place. You will need to fit them back after installing the new battery.

N

The following steps will help you remove the old battery and replace a new one effectively: 1. Turn off your car’s engine. Make sure that your car is in gear or parking postion and have the parking brake on.

14

MOTOR MAY 2014

2. Open the bonnet and place a blanket over the wing to protect your car from corrosive battery acid. 3. Remove the cables from the battery terminals. Look in your owner’s manual to see whether your car has negative ground. If it does, use an adjustable wrench to first loosen the nut and bolt on the clamp, which holds the battery cable on the negative terminal (that’s the post with the little “–” or “NEG” on it). If your car has positive ground, loosen the cable with “+” or “POS” on it first. Remove the cable from the post and lay it out of your way. Then remove the other cable from its post and lay that aside too.

6. Place the new battery on the tray. Make sure it is facing in the same direction as the old one was. 7. Replace the devices that held the old battery in place. Try to wiggle the battery to make sure it’s completely secure. 8. Replace the battery cables on the terminals in reverse order from which you removed them. If your car has negative ground, the positive cable goes back first. Make certain that the clamps holding the cables on the battery terminals are gripping the posts tightly.

DAANN

o matter how well your car is working, if your battery dies and can’t be recharged its time for it to be replaced. A battery usually has a sticker on it that indicates when it was bought, and how long you can expect it to survive. To prevent being stuck on the road with a dead battery, have the battery replaced before the end of its expected life expectancy.

5. Remove the battery. When the battery is free, lift it out of its seat, and place it out of your way. If the tray on which the battery was standing is rusty or has deposits on it, clean it with a little baking soda dissolved in water. Ensure you wear your gloves because the battery acid is corrosive. After this, check to see if the battery tray is completely dry before taking the next step.

Volvo Estate A new chapter in design Volvo is the company that redefined the Estate car by combining functionality, sturdiness, and practicality with performance. The Volvo V70 and XC70 are among the most respected Estates on the market and the new Concept Estate points to how the company could capitalise on this heritage in its forthcoming models. five-spoke, 21-inch wheels contributes to the modern, cool aura. The rear of Concept Estate echoes the design of the Volvo 1800 ES from the early 1970s. Occupants in all four seats are embraced by orange seat belts, and the exclusive, woven wool carpets have the same deep accent colour. The crystal gear leaver also has an orange glow, while the chequered black and white wool textile on the headliner and rear sides of the front seats adds playfulness to the ‘room’. Refined, handcrafted details, such as an instrument panel covered by thick, naturally tanned saddle leather, inlays made of waxed, naturally aged wood and

he Volvo Concept Estate’s most striking interior design feature is its simplicity. Just like the recent Concept Coupe and the Concept XC Coupe, the face of the Volvo Concept Estate is characterised by a new topography on the bonnet and the ‘floating’ grille, flanked by headlights featuring new T-shaped DRL light guides. The rear light signature is another distinctive element in Volvo Cars’ new design direction. The generous dash to axle ratio, low bonnet, sleek silhouette and the glass roof all contribute to the impression of a dynamic, yet capable three-door sports wagon. The contrast between the deep, dark brown pear colour and the bright

The traditional selection of buttons and controls have been replaced by one large tablet-like touch screen control panel in the centre console, bringing the interior firmly into the 21st century. In association with Volvo’s specially designed software, the touch screen is the main control panel for the new in-car’s user experience. The screen replaces all buttons and controls except for a few crucial functions such as volume, play/pause, hazard warning, and window heaters. The screen also interacts seamlessly with

the digital instrument cluster in front of the driver. Destiny The Volvo Estate Concept provides a realistic approach to how future estates from the Scandinavian company will look like. If the Volvo implements the design elements visible on their next cars, they will be one of the most striking cars in the market. The good news is that we don’t have to wait for long to see the results. This is because the next generation XC 90, scheduled to be released later this year, is adorned with visual elements adopted from the three concepts. MOTOR MAY 2014

Saloon Review

With a few well-established brands dominating the midsize saloon segment, and numerous likable competitors trying to unseat them, it’s tough for any particular car to stand out. But the Mazda 6 has something most competitors don’t: Charisma.

W

Mazda 6 Saloon Styled to stand out By Duncan Wachira

hile just about any car in this segment will get the job done, the Mazda 6 manages to engage the driver in the process. This was particularly true of the first-generation 6, which had a relatively compact, European-size footprint and sporty suspension tuning that gave the car a remarkably nimble feel. For the third-generation 6, Mazda enlarged the dimensions while still retaining much of the original model’s handling panache.

Design The third generation Mazda 6 design follows the brand’s KODO - Soul of Motion” design language visible on all new models. In the front view, the ‘signature grill’, which is the hallmark of Mazda family face design, gives the front an aggressive touch. The bonnet creases extend from the tips of the signature grill and flow into the body character lines. Three character lines dominate the side view. Large 19-inch diameter wheels create a feeling of unshakable stability. The rear view displays stability through the well balanced proportions of the wedged body, prominent rear fender, and compact cabin. For the head lights, signature LED luminescence and halo ring light guides are adopted for the first time in a Mazda mass production car. Performance Powering the third generation Mazda 6 is a choice of two petrol power units: SKYACTIV-G 2.0 and SKYACTIV-G 2.5. SKYACTIV-G 2.0 equipped models offer abundant torque characteristics at low engine speeds enabling acceleration that precisely matches the driver’s intention in various driving situations. The maximum torque is 210 Nm while the maximum output is 110 kW (147 hp). The SKYACTIV-G 2.5 delivers a maximum torque of 256 Nm. The maximum

Motoring Q&A

Ensuring your car remains in great shape

Q

Hello Duncan. What tips can I use to ensure my car always remain in great shape? - Valerie Mueni Nakuru County Via Twitter

A

Thanks Valerie for your query. It’s always important to treat your car with care for it to serve you for a longer period of time. Doing so also reduces the total cost you will have to cover for servicing or maintenance. The following tips will guide you in looking after your car, including imparting good driving skills:

1

. Avoid revving the engine when starting your car. Revving the engine especially in cold morning increases the wear and tear. Allow the car to gently warm up before setting off.

2

. When you commence your journey, avoid rapid acceleration. Accelerating rapidly puts strain on the car’s engine increasing the rate of wear. Be gentle on the accelerator pedal for great results.

3

. Leaving an engine warming up for long periods of time damages the components of the engine. This is because the engine will be operating at its peak temperatures, leading to incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits forming on valves, sensors, cylinder walls, catalytic converters and oil contamination. The engine also consumes a lot of fuel which could have been put to better use.

4

. If your car has an automatic transmission, always put it in Neutral or Parking if the car is stationary. This puts less strain on the engine and automatic transmission, increasing the service life of both components. Leaving your car in gear while it’s not moving means the engine is still working to push the car even though it’s stationary.

5

. If your car has a manual gearbox, you should avoid riding the clutch at the lights or if you are stuck in traffic. Riding the clutch, which is resting your foot on the clutch pedal, will do

24

MOTOR MAY 2014

more damage to the release bearing than the clutch plate. If the clutch springs are very weak, it could cause you to burn (glaze) the clutch.

6

. Ensure you regularly rotate your car tyres. This will ensure they wear out more evenly. The first rotation is particularly important. The rotation period is usually specified in the owner’s manual, but if not, you should be rotating your tyres every 10,000 km. A good tyre dealer will know the correct pattern, and some brands of tyres don’t need to be rotated at all.

7

. To prevent unnecessary damage to your car when not using standing for long periods, it’s advisable to disconnect and remove the battery. You should also fill up the fuel tank to prevent condensation from accumulating. You can also be disengaging the parking brake every week to avoid brake corrosion.

8

. Ease pulling the steering wheel to the extreme left or right position for more than a few seconds. Doing so places excessive strain on the power steering pump, suspension and tyres.

9

. Reduce the overall weight of items in the car. For example, a huge bunch of keys places unnecessary strain on your ignition. Such a weight, combined with the pulling effect as it bounces while driving, wears out the tumblers and could cause ignition switch failure. Loosing excess weight also increases the overall efficiency of the car.

10

. Lastly keep your car out of direct sunlight and ensure you wash, wax and clean the windows. This not only preserves the body paint but also ensures your car remains in top notch condition for a long while. The paintwork is also protected from fading, arising out of exposure to bad weather. Follow these procedures Valarie and I promise you, your car will remain in great condition, for many years.

All-New Hyundai Genesis

A new approach in fluidic design In the case of the Hyundai brand, necessity has been the mother of reinvention. Ten years ago, Hyundai was little more than the punch line to jokes about lowquality cars with laughable reliability. If the brand was to survive in the increasingly competitive automotive marketplace, it needed a major-league makeover.

H

yundai has accomplished exactly that in recent years, turning out cars that have been hailed as the shining example of value-priced quality. This reinvention scales new heights with the Hyundai Genesis, the manufacturer’s first stab at the luxury car market. Quiet as a murmur and drenched in luxury, the Hyundai Genesis offers genuine opulence at an unbelievably low price, and credibly that competes with other premium saloons from established brands. For the second generation of the Genesis, Hyundai has added a generous suite of standard safety, convenience features and has evolved the overall design of the car. The All-New Genesis will be the first Hyundai

26

to embody Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, the secondgeneration of this convention-shattering design theme. Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 encapsulates a trio of main design elements: fluid aesthetics, the modern Hyundai look, and a premium ambience. Fluidic forms are still present but with a more refined and precise presentation. Design The design features the modern Hyundai look, with a striking hexagonal front grille as a key geometric element, a dynamic crease accent running along the flanks of the car, and a dynamic rear design. Proportions demonstrate a long dash-to-axle length, longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs than its predecessor.

Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 encapsulates a trio of main design elements: fluid aesthetics, the modern Hyundai look, and a premium ambience. These proportions clearly convey the performance rear-drive configuration beneath the sheet metal. The single-frame 3D-hexagonal grille ensures the front end of the all-new Genesis is not only striking, depicted in semigloss chrome, but also encompasses available

HID headlamps, LED indicators and fog lamps. In profile, the Genesis daylight opening is more expressive, with fluid lines and blended surfaces, a sleek C-pillar helping to emphasize the sporty styling. The rear of the all-new Hyundai Genesis benefits from a sculptural aesthetic with jeweled, full-LED tail lamps. Performance Behind the striking hexagonal front grille is a selection of two power units: A 3.8-litre and a 5.0-litre. The Genesis 3.8-liter Lambda engine utilizes direct-injection and produces 231 kW (311 hp) and 396 Nm. The powerful 5.0-litre Tau V8 engine churns out 313 kW (420 hp) and 518 Nm. The Tau V8 engine family has been named to Ward’s prestigious Ten Best Engines list three times. All 3.8-liter engines are coupled to the same eight-speed automatic transmission design as the Hyundai Genesis 5.0. This Hyundai-developed transmission offers enhanced shift logic and speed, better acceleration, sport-mode, shifting smoothness, and transmission efficiency. All eight-speed transmissions include SHIFTRONIC manual shift capability with ergonomically-placed paddle shifters for spirited driving with manual shifting. Interior The interior layout of All-New Hyundai Genesis has been designed to benefit all occupants with a spacious, comfortable ambience.

The simplification of the switchgear and instrument panel ensures an intuitive layout and open feel. A new design pattern has been introduced to decrease relative interior reflections and brighten dashboard surfaces, while high-grade materials such as genuine aluminum and mattefinish wood are available. Cohesion between the center fascia and audio controls has been ensured through a streamlined design, making the two separate sections appear as one. Driver and passenger posture are optimized using enhanced seat pad density, improved seat support technologies, such as adjustable driver’s seat power bolsters and seat cushion extension. The All-New Hyundai Genesis seats offer 12-way power front seats, including 4-way power lumbar, heated front seats with available Rating: Value: Presence: Interior: Styling: Equipment: Overall:

ventilation, as well as available heated rear seats. Seat materials and stitching quality have been enhanced with the introduction of double, rather than single stitching. New interior-focused features for The All-New Hyundai Genesis include available manual rear side sunshades for enhanced occupant comfort. All occupants are sure to appreciate the enhanced perspective of their surroundings via the new available panoramic sunroof. Verdict The Hyundai Genesis ever growing popularity is set to get to greater heights with the launch of the much improved second generation. Hyundai is super confident with their latest luxury saloon that it has decided to launch it for the very first time in right hand drive. However, what stands out about this particular Genesis is the striking 2.0 fluidic design. Hyundai has hinted that the new design language will be applied to all its models in the upcoming months starting with the next generation Sonata. The All-New Hyundai Genesis would be a great addition to the showrooms of Hyundai East Africa, located along Mombasa Road in Nairobi County. The All-New Peugeot 308 – Audacious and modern

The all-new Peugeot 308 was named Car of the Year 2014 at the 84th Geneva International Show. chrome or gloss black detailing add to the allnew Peugeot 308’s feeling of sophistication. Performance The all-new Peugeot 308 benefits from a range of petrol engines, which are efficient and completely unprecedented. Power outputs are between 130 hp (96 kW) and 155 hp (115 kW). The power units are paired to either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission with an automatic stop start system. Fuel consumption for all petrol engines is between 4.6 to 5.6 l/100 km.

In 1936, the Peugeot 302 was introduced. This marked the beginning of the ‘3’ series cars in the Peugeot range. However, its reign in the market went cold in 1938. Peugeot didn’t introduce another ‘3’ car until the late 1960s. The return of the ‘3’ car in the Peugeot line up was marked in 1969 by the launch of the 304. 1986 saw Peugeot break their tradition by releasing the 309.

U

ntil today the 309 is the only model in the range that has a ‘9’ at the end of its name. The 309 was followed with the 306, 307, and now 308. The outgoing Peugeot 308 was more up market than its predecessors. Nevertheless, it earned a bad reputation for being less striking thanks to its gapping grille and large ‘eyes’. However, recent developments at Peugeot have changed the 308’s reputation from dull to intuitive. Design The all-new Peugeot 308 is audacious, intuitive, and modern. The All-new Peugeot 308 has all of the essential characteristics needed in the C-segment. The All-new 308’s compact size (length: 4.25m and height: 1.46m), spacious interior and a particularly large boot (470 litres below the shelf) offers a strong alternative to many of its rivals. The 308 is the latest evidence of the Peugeot’s up-market strategy and move. The 308’s design is inspired by the 208 hatchback and 2008 crossover. The initial design brief of the All-new Peugeot 308 was to have the highest levels of quality in its DNA. With its compact

length of 4.25 metres and well-balanced proportions, the all-new Peugeot 308 projects a classy and sophisticated presence. The front is dominated by an evolutionary reinterpretation of the brand’s ‘floating’ front grille, and by the strong lighting signature. Slim full-LED headlamps are standard on the majority of trim levels. This is a world-first in the hatchback segment. The all-new 308’s high quality design continues at the rear, with the three Peugeot (lion) ‘claws’ drawn by the rear LED lamps. Every element, both inside and outside, has been developed and refined with exceptional attention to detail. The choices of high quality interior materials and the satin

Interior The hallmark of the interior of the allnew Peugeot 308 is the i-cockpit. Everything is arranged with precision for an experience that is intuitive and relaxing. Everything Shell knows about motorbikes has gone into creating Shell Advance: a range of dedicated motorcycle lubricants that help to keep the motorcycles in peak condition, making them responsive to the slightest touch. Shell’s work with racing technical partners such as Ducati provides Shell with the most challenging environment in world motorsport for developing and testing

lubricants. The technology Shell develops in the sporting arena is applied to the oil that is now available to Kenyan riders to put in their motorcycles. In developing the Shell Advance motorcycle oil, Shell listened to many motorcycle riders to find out exactly what they wanted to experience from the lubricants they use. Understanding the needs of the motorcycle riders enabled Shell to develop a tailor made portfolio of superior oil products.

Motorcycle oil performance reliability leads to enhanced engine protection, thereby improving the reliability of the motorcycle. The new Shell Advance oils now available in Kenya offer protection in five vital areas: start-up, oxidation control, piston deposit control, sludge control and valve train and gear protection.

Control Friction is a vital force for motorcycle riders. Most motorcycles, unlike cars, have a wet clutch, so oil performance in the clutch assembly is vital for smooth acceleration and efficient power transfer. The most crucial and hardest working components of a motorcycle clutch are the clutch plates. Having the correct amount of friction between the plates leads to smooth acceleration, giving the rider a feeling of control over the motorcycle. If there is too little friction, the clutch plate may slip and reduce or even prevent acceleration. If there is too much fric-

START-UP PROTECTION Engine wear begins as soon as the engine of a motorcycle is started, so the low-temperature viscosity of lubricants is crucial for the protection and the smooth running of a motorcycle. A cold-cranking simulator test checks the low-temperature performance of lubricants when starting a cold engine. These tests have shown that Shell Advance oils help to maintain the right viscosity and protect the engine from the moment it starts. OXIDATION CONTROL Over time, the oil in your motorcycle degrades. This process leads to a build-up of acids and increasing oil viscosity, which reduce your engine’s performance and the protection that the oil can offer. The superior oxidation control of Shell Advance oil helps to maintain cycle in peak condition, making it responsive to your slightest touch. You can tell if it is in peak condition from the sound of your motorcycle and from how it feels when you ride it. As motorcycle experts, Shell knows that when your motorcycle is in peak condition, it offers the rider a high degree of reliability and enhanced control, giving you an enjoyable ride at all times. The technology that has been developed for the new Shell Advance range of motorcycle oils helps to enhance each of these aspects of the motorcycle. RCE TECHNOLOGY The new RCE technology of Shell Advance helps to keep your motorcycle in peak condition, making it responsive to your slightest touch. RCE technology delivers exceptional reliability of oil performance through careful formulation of the highest quality additives and

your motorcycle’s performance and protect its engine for longer. Shell Advance motorcycle oils contain special antioxidant agents that help to counteract the oil degradation and maintain its viscosity. PISTON DEPOSIT CONTROL If pistons are not kept clean, ring sticking, start-up problems or engine seizure may occur. The additives used in Shell Advance oils help to keep piston rings moving freely, clean the engine, neutralise the corrosive acids that form as fuel is burned and maintain oil viscosity at high temperatures without causing unwanted deposits. SLUDGE CONTROL The intense heat and shear forces generated by motorcycle engines can break down the oil and release small carbon particles into the engine. Over time, these could accumulate and form sludge deposits. Shell Advance products remove these carbon particles, and this helps to maintain engine performance and high levels of protection. VALVE TRAIN/GEAR PROTECTION The valve train is a critical part of the motorcycle engine where there is high-pressure contact at very high temperatures. It is important to minimise wear on this critical engine component. Shell Advance products offer excellent valve train protection. In comparing the anti-wear performance of Shell Advance AX3 against a competitor’s oil, it was found that Shell Advance AX3 provided excellent wear protection and that the competitor’s oil failed to protect the valve train. The scar volume with the competitor’s oil was 2.7 times larger than with Shell MOTOR MAY 2014

tion, the clutch plates may stick and cause shudder. Shell Advance oils deliver optimised friction control, which helps them to meet the necessary oil manufacturer’s standards. Enjoyable ride Unlike car drivers, who are well insulated from engine noise, motorcycle riders sit almost directly on the engine. This makes noise and causes vibration. Noise and vibrations are therefore important factors in the riding experience. Shell Advance AX7 and Shell Advance Ultra motorcycle oils contain viscosity improvers that make them highly shear stable, which helps to dampen vibration and reduce engine noise. As you choose higher tiers in Shell Advance range, the shear stability parameters improve significantly. CHOOSE THE RIGHT OIL Choosing the right oil is a crucial decision for every motorcycle rider. The Shell Advance range puts the rider in control by offering a selection of products that can deliver stepped improvements in oil performance, including the important aspects such as Reliability, Control and Enjoyment. Each oil is designed for a specific type of motorcycle, but also offers superior performance for motorcycles of lower capacity. Every product in the Shell Advance range is designed for a particular type of bike and riding style, so choosing the right oil could not be simpler. By answering three questions, you can be sure you will find the oil you need. The three questions are: What kind of motorcycle do you ride?

stack with fewer controls and switches. The new black satin trim and chrome detailing contribute to a cleaner, more modern look, and more logical and intuitive functions. The new centre console storage offers more space as well as a new sliding, integrated armrest. The 2015 Ford Focus also offers a quieter ride, achieved by thicker carpets, thicker side window glass, and improved engine bay insulation. Ford’s advanced infotainment system features a high-resolution, 8-inch colour touch screen and advanced voice control for easier access to audio, navigation, climate control and compatible mobile phones. Verdict The 2015 Ford Focus’ new styling seems to make for a more premium look, and our brief initial look at the interior shows designers have backed off from the highly technical look of the current Focus dash and centre stack in favour of a softer, more premium direction. So it looks as if waiting for the 2015 Ford Focus might be the best option. This is because the 2015 Ford Focus may become the most sophisticated-looking choice in the small-car class. Ride The 2008 Demio offers a quiet and sophisticated ride thanks to the efforts of Mazda engineers to minimize the overall weight of the hatchback. This refined body structure adds to the excellent fuel economy, and most importantly it does this without any sacrifice to safety. The suspension has been optimally tuned and the steering and braking systems are of the highest standard. The result is agile but stable handling, a high degree of manoeuvrability and reassuring control enabling entry users and experienced drivers alike to enjoy driving with confidence.

2008 Mazda Demio Eye-catching and dynamic Launched in September 2007 as Mazda’s first new-generation Zoom-Zoom vehicle to evolve to the next level, the Mazda Demio was an instant hit all over the world. The 2008 Mazda Demio adopted the great qualities from its predecessor model, which continues to have a great fan base in Kenya. The striking small hatchback has won over 20 automotive awards.

However, thanks to the used car market, Kenyans will continue to sample the great appeal this little hatchback has to offer. Boasting a dynamic, attention-grabbing design, the 2008 Mazda Demio makes a lasting impression on trendy urban buyers, looking for a little car that

of the body, and the patterns of light over the body are combined to create an appealing look. The resulting exterior design exudes a powerful energy that makes the 2008 Mazda Demio look as though it’s about to move even when it’s parked. Power The 2008 Mazda Demio is available with two power units: a 1.3-litre and a 1.5-litre. The 1.3-litre engine boasts a maximum output of 62 kW (83 hp) @ 6 000rpm and a torque peak of 121 Nm @ 3 500rpm, while the 1.5-litre Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) engine offers 76 kW (101 hp) of power at 6 000rpm and a maximum torque of 136 Nm at 4 000rpm. All-New Mazda BT-50 For the active lifestyle The All-New Mazda BT-50 offers stylish looks, a dynamic driving experience, tremendous functionality and advanced safety features. The All-New Mazda BT-50 is designed to appeal to customers who have an active and demanding lifestyle whether at work or at play.

T

he revolutionary new design combined with increased interior space, longer wheelbase and greater power ensures all the comfort of a passenger car, with the versatility of a pick-up. The All-New Mazda BT-50 borrows its DNA architecture from the renowned Ford Ranger pick-up. Design The All-New BT-50’s strong, confident face is a clever reworking of several Mazda-family design elements, including an evolved version of the five-point grille. In particular, the headlamps feature a boomerang design more typical of Mazda passenger cars. From the side pick-up

longer length is used to its full effect in creating a wedge-shaped profile. The front dynamic prominent fenders continue in the pronounced body-side feature lines flowing to the rear, creating a strong-looking contoured form. The profile design is complemented by newly designed 16-and17-inch aluminium wheels. The rear is characterised by a strong contour line, echoed in the unique horizontally-aligned rear combination lamps. These sophisticated lamps add a sense of style to the sporty rear design. In addition, they clearly differentiate the All-New BT-50 from other pick-ups, thus making it immediately recognizable as a Mazda.

Performance The All-New Mazda BT-50 features a competent and reliable engine line-up. The 2.2-litre in-line 4-cylinder power plant is the entry level of the engine line-up, and is offered in two power versions. The 88 kW (118 hp) version delivers a maximum torque of 285 Nm, while the 110 kW (147 hp) version delivers a maximum torque of 375 Nm. The more powerful 3.2-litre diesel unit achieves excellent power and torque of 147 kW (197 hp) and 470 Nm. All diesel engines, except the 88 kW versions, are paired to either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions. The only petrol engine on the range, a 2.5-litre inline 4-cylinder DOHC, features a power output of 122 kW (163 hp) and has peak torque of 225 Nm. This engine and the 2.2-litre 88 kW diesel unit are paired with a new 5-speed manual transmission. Ride The All-New Mazda BT-50 is engineered to provide the comfort of a passenger car with SUV-like handling. Front suspension consists of a double-wishbone layout with coil springs and the rear is a rigid axle with leaf springs, giving superior ride comfort regardless of load

Verdict The All-New Mazda BT-50 combines strong style and design elements with the comfort and convenience of a premium passenger car. Whether you are at work, at play or spending time with the family, the new BT-50 has been engineered to adapt to the task. and road conditions. All 4WD models feature a shift-on-the-fly transfer case. Interior The sporty, passenger car feel extends to the interior, with every detail carefully thought out to give a satisfying feel of quality. An asymmetric layout for the front gives the front passenger a spacious and comfortable area similar to a passenger car, while the driver enjoys a snug, sporty-style, wraparound driving environment. Front headroom as well as shoulder room is very spacious in the All-New Mazda BT-50. The Double Cab’s rear passengers enjoy similar conveniences with regard to headroom and legroom. The keynote interior colour is black, highlighted with decorative silver elements. These silver elements on the door trim,

floor, centre console, shift knob, parking brake button, door handles, climate-control levers, meter rings, dials, and other parts are made of different materials and have different shades of silver according to location. Parts that users touch frequently are chrome-plated with a satin finish that attracts the eye without causing glare. Three types of upholstery are offered: vinyl, fabric, and leather for the top spec model. A 3.5-inch Multi Function Display is located at the top of the centre stack to confirm audio operations. Control is via a jog pad surrounded by dedicated buttons. High-performance, 6-inch door-mounted speakers are tuned for accurate sound staging. For assured comfort, there’s a newly-adopted dual-zone automatic air conditioning system.

Safe Driving

A

quaplaning is something everyone knows about but very few people understand. Also known as hydroplaning, aquaplaning is the action of losing grip, usually between car tyres and the road, due to excess water on the road surface. Aquaplaning happens especially when it gets all rainy. Mostly it’s only for a very brief second or two, such as when driving over a puddle of water. However, sometimes you’re on a long stretch of road with a lot of water and the next thing you know, your steering’s stopped working, you’ve lost all grip, and when you stamp on the brakes, you start to skid. Whether you’re a learner, newly qualified or a seasoned driver, feeling a car aquaplane, and possibly start to slide, is one of the scarcest things you will ever encounter. Causes Aquaplaning occurs when your car tyres, instead of touching the road, drive over a layer or thin film of water, usually due to heavy rain or a water leak, making the tyres lose contact with the road surface. You can tell when this happens because your steering feels light. Another sign that the car has aquaplaned is a drop in obvious road noise. This is because the tyres are no longer touching the tarmac, or road surface. Unfortunately, because things like braking and steering rely on the friction

between your tyres and the road, you momentarily lose these abilities. This makes your car extremely difficult to control. You can’t steer, slow down, or speed up.

Avoiding aquaplaning

What to do When the car starts to aquaplane, most people

panic. This is normal, and understandable. However, it’s not the best solution, as panicking has very little positive effect on your car. Instead, you need to learn how to regain control of your car. Most motorists, when their car starts to aquaplane, instinctively come off the accelerator and onto the brakes. Sadly, this they do not do gradually. They jerk their foot off the accelerator pedal and stomp on the brake pedal. By doing this, the balance of the car on the road is upset, increasing the chances of the car sliding off the road completely. The best thing to do is to ease off the accelerator pedal gently and progressively. Keep the front wheels pointing straight ahead, even if it means driving towards something you don’t want to, until you have stopped aquaplaning. Conclusion Always ensure that your tyres are pumped up to the right pressure. Check to see if the tyre treads are not worn out. Ensure your wheels are dressed in all seasonal tyres. If it has begun to rain, ease of the speed and change down gears, if you see an area with water on the road.

Wish List Choice

All-New Mercedes GLA Striking, versatile and economical

Essentially an A-Class with better ground clearance and a straighter roof line, the GLA compact “crossover” will slot in under the larger Mercedes GLK crossover. Mercedes displayed a concept GLA at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, a showpiece with 20-inch wheels, and the production model carries over the concept’s strong tapering character lines along the side panels.

I

t’s a design element also present on the new CLA saloon. The All-New GLA mirrors the new saloon inside as well. Our wish list light-footedly masters all day-to-day challenges and is also robust enough for off-road excursions. This and many other great qualities make the All-New Mercedes GLA a must have crossover and our Wish List Choice. Looks The upright front end, with a central

Mercedes star, lends a muscular and superior impression to the All-New Mercedes-Benz GLA. Power domes on bonnet give the compact crossover a sporty touch, while the twinlouver grille accentuates the vehicle’s width. An impressive front aspect is ensured by the headlamps and LED daytime running lamps. The front bumper features diamond-pattern grilles in front of the cooling air intakes. At the side view, the line of the beltline trim gradually rises from the rear door to the C-pillar. Roof trim strips complete the side view at the top. On request the compact crossover can be fitted with tyres sizes up to 19-inches. The muscular shoulders over the rear axle are emphasised even further by the shape of the C-pillars. The divided tail lights give the All-New Mercedes GLA a wider rear end. Performance Modern four-cylinder engines that feature turbo charging and direct injection, as well as an ECO start/stop function as standard, give our Wish List Choice superior efficiency. The power range of the 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines range from 115 kW (156 hp) for the All-New Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 to 155 kW (211 hp) in the GLA 250 4MATIC. The GLA 250 4MATIC sprints from zero to 100 km/h in only 6.5 seconds, while the top speed is 235 km/h. The GLA 250 needs 7.1-litres/100 km. The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission or with the 7G-DCT (7-speed) dual clutch automatic transmission. The chassis of the All-New Mercedes-Benz GLA features a McPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension. In the versions with 4MATIC, the rear axle carrier is isolated with rubber bushings for the benefit of ride comfort.

The rear seat backrests can not only be folded down completely, but are also adjustable for angle if required. The luggage compartment (421 - 836 litres) is well-presented and can be loaded without difficulty thanks to the low loading sill and the wide tailgate.

Interior The muscular and imposing appearance of the exterior is systematically continued into the interior. Head 2 Head

Chevrolet Utility vs. Nissan NP 200 The half ton clash: The half-ton pick segment in Kenya has been on the upward trend in the recent months with the introduction of two new pick-ups. In this month’s Head 2 Head, we compare the strength and qualities of the Nissan NP200 pick-up with its rival from America, the Chevrolet Utility.

W

ith the area behind the B-pillar devoted to a load bay, designers of this type of pickups tend to concentrate on the section between the headlamps and the rear of the cab to achieve a measure of individuality and brand recognition. The Nissan NP200 replaced the legendary B140, which was launched way back in 1971. The Chevrolet Utility on the other hand borrows its inspiration from

48

MOTOR MAY 2014

the Corsa Utility which is an icon in the half-ton segment. Meet the competitors The Chevrolet Utility, now in its third generation, first broke cover in its native Brazil early in 2011 where it is known as the Chevrolet Montana. The Utility offers the best of Chevrolet in a small and attractive package. Nissan has one of the most comprehensive

commercial vehicle line-ups on the market as well as a reputation for reliability and rugged ability. The Nissan NP200 is the baby of the range, offering a large load box and comfortable interior at a very attractive price, Round 1 – Design The Chevrolet Utility outline is defined by a series of crisp styling lines, flowing out from the strong body colour bumper and around the smart elliptical shaped headlights. The headlights bring their own element of style to this attractive small pick-up, sweeping back as they do from the top edge of the body colour bumper through to centre of the front fenders. The up-to-the-minute chrome bezel styling treatment with polycarbonate lenses for the lamps brings a fresh, fun, styling approach to the

segment. The rear of the pick-up is defined by the modern rear light clusters, once again with polycarbonate lenses used to great effect against a backdrop of chrome bezels for these fittings. A marginally lower tailgate height vastly improves rearward visibility. The large load box can carry between 733 and 763 kilograms of goods. Designed to address the needs of both business users and private motorists looking for a practical leisure pick-up, the Nissan NP200 offers a modern and robust interior. Materials for the dashboard, door panels and upholstery, are strong and durable, an important consideration whether its application is work or play. The purposeful stance of the Nissan NP200 is further boosted by the body colour bumpers as well as tinted glass all round. The vehicle is fitted with 15-inch steel wheels with a full

size spare wheel. With the largest payload in its class the Nissan NP200 seems to be the sensible choice compared to its American rival. However, the Chevrolet Utility has the head turning looks compared to its rival. Round 2 - Performance Powering the Chevrolet Utility is a 1.4litre power unit, which churns out 68 kW (91 hp) and a maximum torque of 120 Nm. The Chevrolet Utility’s suspension uses McPherson struts in the front and a trailing arm, torsion bar arrangement at the rear. The suspension set up rewards the Chevrolet utility with a supple ride, which comes in handy on a nastily bumpy road. The Nissan NP200 on the other hand has a slightly bigger engine, a 1.5-litre unit, which delivers less power, 64 kW (85 hp), and more

torque, rated at 128 Nm. The Nissan NP200 suspension has been designed with passenger car-like comfort in mind resulting in a smooth, balanced response under all circumstances. Just like its rival, the NP200 front suspension comprises a MacPherson layout, while the rear suspension uses an H-type torsion beam. The pick-up plus coil springs and extended-travel vertical dampers smoothen bumps on the road. The Chevrolet Utility delivers more in terms of all round performance. However, the NP200 extra torque comes in handy when carrying heavy loads. Round 3 – Interior The interior of the Chevrolet Utility features up-to-the-minute styling trends. The MOTOR MAY 2014

dashboard styling features well placed controls within easy reach of the driver for excellent ergonomics. Air vents, door handles, door side panels, all have a fresh edgy look to them while digital ventilation controls set a new standard in the segment. Even the gear lever design is easy on the eyes thanks to its comfortable grip and nifty slide-switch reverse interlock. A feature of the Chevrolet Utility is the higher seating position for driver and passenger that provides for better all-round visibility and a better feeling of being in command of the pick-up, more in keeping with its utility application. The driver’s seat is height adjustable as is the steering column. The shape of the seats has been refined to provide a higher level of comfort and features an innovative cushion shape. Excellent front and rear visibility, partnered with a commanding driving position as well as advanced ergonomics, make the Nissan

50

MOTOR MAY 2014

NP200 cabin environment comfortable and user friendly. Extensive stowage areas are littered throughout the cabin with a glove box, door bins, and cup holders all easily at hand. A sizeable stowage compartment behind the seat is easily accessible by tipping the driver’s seat forward. Two interior hooks on the rear bulkhead provide a place for one to hang work clothes while there is also a net for holding small objects in the middle of the partition, behind the seats. The rear window is fitted as standard with a double-barred partition than can be reinforced with a safety hoop with load restraint in order to protect the cabin against load intrusion from any heavy or dangerous objects loaded on the load bed. Both pick-ups offer a roomier interior with some space to spare for niceties. Although there is plenty of plastics visible all-round the cabin of the two pick-ups, the Chevrolet Utility’s mod-

ern look, dials layout and the sizeable stowage compartment behind the seat ensures it take first place.

Conclusion

The Chevrolet Utility is practical, easy to live with, and a fairly trimmed pick-up. The Chevrolet Utility has all what is needed to make it a desirable pick-up such as the ability to haul 700kg of rubble along a bumpy road. The NP 200 pick-up offers class leading space and load area, a solid backing from Nissan, and feeling of driving a regular car – a great option for any small business looking for a utility vehicle.

Motor Acronyms

ESP

Electronic Stability Program

Dramatically helps in correcting vehicle instability during uncontrollable under or over steer situations by measuring lateral acceleration at the car's centre of gravity. Also Known as VSA, DSC, ESC

FSi

Fuel Stratisfied Injection

Also known as DI (Direct Injection) or GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection). Petrol is injected at high pressure directly into the car’s combustion chamber; the air fuel mixture can run far leaner than conventional EFI systems so is more efficient.

FWD

Front Wheel Drive

A car’s engine power is delivered through the front wheels. Is more common today than Rear Wheel Drive.

GVW

Gross Vehicle Weight

The maximum recommended weight for a vehicle, including: the weight of the vehicle itself, fuel and other fluids, passengers, and all cargo.

HAC

Hill Assist Control

A safety feature intended for off-road use. Helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backward or slipping sideways when performing hill start on steep or slippery gradients.

HID

High Intensity Discharge

High Intensity Discharge lighting technology uses electric inducers to provide an arc inside a gas-filled bulb, enhancing night driving. Only trained technicians should maintain the system.

A single, highly pressurized fuel line supplies diesel to all cylinders allowing for finer control over fuel use. Vastly reduces diesel engine's noise and improves fuel economy.

kW

Kilowatt

The metric equivalent of Brake Horsepower. Used to measure the energy output of a vehicle's engine.

Continuous Valve Transmission

A continuously variable transmission is an automatic transmission that can vary drive ratios seamlessly using an internal belt and cone arrangement.

LED

Light Emitting Diode

LED's are semiconductors that emit light when an electric current is applied. Increasingly popular in vehicle lighting as they have a much quicker response time and last longer.

DAC

Downhill Assist Control

A safety feature intended for off-road use. The vehicle's ABS and throttle control systems to maintain a gradual more controlled decent on steep or slippery off-road surfaces.

LHD

Left Hand Drive

The steering wheel and controls on the left hand side of cars driven on the right hand side of the road in countries such as the USA.

DOHC

Double Overhead Camshaft

A now very common vehicle engine design that places two camshafts (one to operate inlet valves, one to operate exhausts valves) mounted above the cylinder head.

LPG

Liquid Petroleum Gas LPG

LPG is a popular alternative fuel to petrol or diesel. The cost per liter is less than petrol but it is less fuel efficient.

DSG

Direct Shift Gearbox

A computer controlled manual gearbox that pre selects additional gears to the current driven gear. No clutch pedal is required and the next gear can be engaged very rapidly.

LSD

Limited Slip Differential

A limited Slip Differential allows two driving wheels to operate in unison when one breaks traction. It provides improved control and traction in slippery conditions.

EBD

Electronic Brake Distri- Electronically controls and distributes appropriate brake pressure to all brakes dependant bution on load and braking force. Replaces traditional mechanical brake proportioning valve.

LWB

Long Wheel Base

Front and rear axles are further apart therefore the body or cargo deck of a commercial vehicle will be longer than other model variations.

ECU

Electronic Control Unit

An ECU is an electronic "brain" which controls a system in a car, such as the engine management system, transmission or body electrics.

NM

Newton Meter

Measurement of a vehicle's engine torque. Torque is the turning force of the car’s engine.

EDC

Electronic Damper Control

Electronic Damper Control An ECU-controlled wheel suspension system that adjusts the shock absorbers and regulates damper forces electronically adapting to changing road, load or driving conditions.

OEM

Original Equipment Manufacturer

Manufacturer/supplier of components fitted to a new car at the time of manufacture.

EFI

Electronic Fuel Injection

EFI systems replace carburetors as fitted to older vehicles. The electronically controlled fuel injectors deliver fuel more efficiently, improving economy, emissions and drivability.

PAS

Power Assisted Steering

A system designed to reduce the effort required to steer the vehicle, particularly at low parking speeds. Can be Hydraulic, Electric or a combination of both.

EGR

Exhaust Gas Recirculation

A proportion of car exhaust gasses are redirected back into the car’s engine to help burn fuel more efficiently and significantly reduce harmful emissions.

PDC

Park Distance Control

An audible warning device that alerts the driver when their car is getting close to other cars or objects when parking

ELR

Emergency Locking Retractor

Seatbelts which are always unlocked except in emergency situations such as rapid deceleration, rapid acceleration or hard cornering vehicle manoeuvres.

RWD

Rear Wheel Drive

A car’s engine power is delivered through the rear wheels. Less common today than FWD.

ACRONYM

NAME

Antilock Braking System

Prevents the wheels of a car locking up and skidding under sudden or heavy braking. Hence control and steering of the car is maintained

A/C

Air-conditioning

Absorbs heat and blows refrigerated air into the cabin of the car, cooling it to below the ambient air temperature

ACC

Active Cruise Control

Using a front-mounted RADAR, ACC detects slower vehicles ahead and will maintain a relative driving speed to ensure a safe following distance.

AFM

Active Fuel Management

Also known as MDS (Multi Displacement System) or VCM (Variable Cylinder Management). During light operation the car’s engine can shut off cylinders so less fuel is used.

ATC

Active Traction Control Used primarily in off road 4x4 applications ATC (also often referred as A-Trac) brakes spinning wheels and diverts torque to other wheels to gain traction in slippery surfaces.

AWD

All Wheel Drive

Popular terminology for permanent four-wheel drive systems. Vehicle can distribute power to all four wheels rather than just to the front or rear vehicle wheels only.

BHP

Brake Horse Power

The measure of a car engine's horsepower before the rest of the vehicle's drive train. The metric equivalent is Kilowatts (kW). 1 BHP = 0.745kW.

Life saving safety features to look for

I

n the past few years, car manufacturers have been busy expanding the list of standard safety features. Most of these features are designed to help prevent or avoid accidents, but they can also help reduce the severity of the accident impact by slowing the car before an impact. Others have been known to save lives during an accidental impact. The following safety features should be too considered when choosing a car:

fic to maintain a safe following distance without the driver having to do anything. As traffic speeds up, the car accelerates to maintain the preset speed.

1. Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Imagine the sudden appearance of an obstacle on the Thika Super Highway. A driver’s natural reaction is to quickly steer away to avoid colliding with the obstacle. This sudden movement can lead to the car swerving sharply one way and then sharply back the other way, causing the car to slide or skid uncontrollably and often resulting in a serious crash. ESC helps avoid such a situation.

7. Autonomous braking. If the driver doesn’t respond to the warning, some systems are able to brake automatically to prevent a collision or lessen the impact. Systems that combine forward-collision warning and auto-brake are the most effective.

2. Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS). This enables the driver to have steering control, preventing skidding and loss of traction upon sudden braking. This is particularly useful on loose surfaces or wet conditions. Both ESC and ABS are complimentary technologies, working in sync to provide greater control of the car and reduce the chance of skidding and crashing. 3. Airbags. When deployed in a crash, airbags significantly reduce the chance of death or impact serious injury. Motorists should look for Front, Side, Curtain and Knee airbags for maximum safety 4. Seat Belts and seat belt reminders. All occupants should wear retractable three-point sash style seat belts with pre-tensioners technology, which helps prevent or deal with the forces of impact during a crash. Lap belts are less safe. Audible seat belt reminders are additional valuable devices that remind and encourage all occupants to wear their seat belts. 5. Adaptive cruise control. This uses forwardlooking sensors like radar and cameras to monitor the distance between your car and the one ahead. The system will automatically slow the car down in traf-

6. Forward collision avoidance system. Using the same forward-looking sensors, these pre-crash warning systems alert drivers with visual or auditory cues when the car is getting too close to the one in front.

8. Adaptive headlights. This innovative technology allows drivers to see well as they drive round a curve. The system also makes it easier to spot pedestrians at the side of the road when navigating a corner. 9. Backup camera. Once a luxury car standard, the backup camera often displayed in the rear-view mirrors or in-dash display is now a popular option on midrange cars, giving drivers’ assurance when backing out of a parking spot. 10. Reverse backup sensors. For use with or without a camera, this equipment beeps if you are about to hit something while backing up. 11. Side-view assist. Sensors can detect a car in your blind spot and then alert you with a light in your side mirror or with a beep if you engage your turn signal. 12. Parking assist. Are you always anxious about squeezing into that tight space? An increasing number of models offer a feature that detects the size of a parallel parking space, guides you into the starting position, and then allows you to take your hands off the wheel while the computer backs the car into place. Most of these features and technology are now available as standard equipment in most car brands.
