Welcome!

Cattleman, Friends and Neighbors,

We would like to invite you to our 57th Annual Production Sale on Saturday, January 11th. On behalf of the Dethlefs’, we want to thank all of our friends, neighbors, and customers that have made it possible for us all of these years. We have been fortunate to have met so many good people and good customers over the years throughout raising Angus cattle. We will be selling over 100 big, stout, 2-year-old virgin bulls. As always, these bulls are our top end. They are not picked over, and are selected from over 250 head of bull calves. They have never been fed hard and have been developed on pasture so they get plenty of exercise.

This last year, we took the steer mates to these bulls to a feed yard where they were custom finished. These steer calves gained 4.1 pounds a day and finished at 1480 pounds. They were not fed overly long and still went 94% Choice/Prime and 90% YG 3 or less. These steer calves earned a premium of $75 per head being sold on the grid. These are the type of cattle we have been breeding to ensure our customers’ success.

Our true pride and joy is our cow herd. A good bull starts with the good cow behind him. Our herd is run very similarly to a commercial cow herd. We believe in culling our cow herd hard, demanding that our cows wean heavy calves, breed back on time, and hold their body condition throughout the year.

We are breeding bulls to work for the commercial customer. Every year we spend countless hours and drive thousands of miles seeking out the best bulls we can find to fit our program. We have great success using sires we either purchase ourselves or sires we home raise. We ensure that every cow is being serviced by the best bulls possible. Due to this, you will see the consistency of quality non-AI bulls all throughout the sale.

Gary: 308-383-1855

Connor: 308-383-6229

Clayton: 308-383-8933

Just like last year, lots 1-30 are genomic tested. Most of the bulls’ growth EPDs increased substantially. Because of that, it would be safe to say that the bulls we did not genomic test would also have more growth than their current EPDs indicate. This is due to generations of breeding for growth and not just breeding for EPDs.

We hope the good Lord sent some rain your way. Cattle prices are the bright spot of all the things going on right now and the future looks bright for cattleman. As always, we would love for you to stop by to look at the cattle and visit. Be sure to join us for lunch on sale day.

Thank you again,

Carl Dethlefs & Sons Angus

Why use an age-advantaged bull?

Are you …

- Tired of buying over-conditioned yearling bulls that fall apart during the breeding season?

- Questioning if your yearling bull will be able to cover your mature cows?

- Afraid that your yearling bull won’t be able to service very many cows?

There is nothing wrong with using a yearling bull; however, you are often asking that bull to do a lot. More often than not, the bull has been fed a high concentrate diet and pushed until the time of the sale.

These young bulls, sometimes not much over a year of age, are turned out and expected to go to work going from a high concentrate diet to a forage diet.

On top of that, that yearling bull is still growing and maturing. His nutrient requirements are going to be a lot higher than a mature animal.

Therefore, he will often lose weight during the breeding season, and will need more supplement over the winter to be ready for the next breeding season.

We do the hardest part for you!

When you receive one of our bulls, he is mature, in the right condition, and ready to go to work. His hardest year is already past him. He will be able to …

- Be trusted to service mature cows his first breeding season

- Be able to service many more cows his first breeding season

- Hold his body condition a lot easier throughout the season

- Last the whole breeding season, not wear out halfway through

Reasons to use Dethlefs bulls ...

- We don’t “push” our bulls, so they are not over-conditioned come sale time.

- They aren’t in a lot. They are out on pasture getting plenty of exercise until sale time.

- Our cow herd is expected to survive the same way a commercial herd does – have good dispositions, calve unassisted, raise a heavy calf and re-breed in a timely manner year after year.

- We don’t breed solely for EPDs. Instead we focus on breeding sound, functional cattle that look the part.

- We equally value growth, carcass and maternal traits in our cattle.

MCCONNELL REGARD 4260

McConnell Regard 4260 was our pick of the 2022 McConnell Angus bull sale. His calves are exceptionally heavy-muscled and thick, growing and weighing really well. This is an impressive sire group we are very excited about, and you’ll notice these bulls throughout the sale. We’re also excited to calve out his first daughters this spring. They are deepbodied and easy-fleshing, much like their bull mates, and will make excellent cows.

U2 COALITION 206C

Coalition is a Canadian import we traveled up to Spickler Ranch South in North Dakota to get a look at. He walks on good feet and throws a lot of middle and fleshing ability. Calves show plenty of thickness and daughters are feminine and docile with great udder quality. We have used Coalition on heifers with great success.

MUSGRAVE REDEMPTION

We used Redemption mostly on heifers with great results. His calves were born light, grew well, and are pleasing to look at. His mother has an excellent udder and is super deep. Most of these sons will work on heifers and leave you with a great set of females.

S ARCHITECT 9501

DEER VALLEY GROWTH FUND

Growth Fund is a proven and popular sire used heavily across the country. His calves are exceptionally deep-bodied and easy-fleshing. We bred him to our shorter, thicker cows, and the cross worked exceptionally well. This is a very impressive sire group, arguably our best. These bulls are powerful and consistent, with nearly all of them ending up at the top of the sale order.

RCL STUNNER 0408

RCL Stunner 0408 is a high-performance son of Musgrave Stunner we bought from Geppert’s Rock Creek Livestock in South Dakota. This stunner son weaned at over 900 lbs. and looked flawless. We lost him his first season due to breeding injury but had semen collected on him. His sons show more frame and have excellent feet. His calves performed really well.

S NIAGARA 005

S Niagara 005 was our pick of the yearling bulls at Spickler Ranch South in North Dakota. He is the son of SS Niagara and the Spickler donor cow S Elba 1004. The calves from this bull impress us more and more as time goes by. They show tremendous depth of body and a good hip. His calves are easy keeping, good footed, and have good growth. This bull will produce a lot of crowd favorites the next few years.

4M BLACKHAWK 201

Blackhawk 201 was our pick of the bulls at 4M Angus in Blue Hill. This bull was just a tank with a huge hip and great feet. We were worried this bull wouldn’t stop growing and get too big, but he didn’t. He ended up being a medium framed bull with super capacity. We lost this bull due to injury but have a small amount of semen left. The sons out of this bull cover a lot of bases.

Deer Valley Growth Fund

This bull is a stud. It was difficult choosing which bull to lead off the sale with, but we feel this one checks the most boxes. He is incredibly long-bodied, yet maintains a long, level topline. He’s a real power bull that is still attractively built. He’s clean-sheathed, great fronted, and moves well on good feet. His dam has been an exceptional female with a weaning ratio of 104 on five calves.

We love this bull—he is one of the stoutest we have ever raised. He will blow you away when you study him from every angle. The amount of muscle and shape he carries, and where he carries it, is impressive. He’s been a favorite from a young age. His 4-year-old dam is well on her way to becoming a pathfinder, having raised an exceptional Sitz Logo son that topped our sale last year.

This big-framed Growth Fund son has a ton of rib shape and capacity, with very high growth EPDs. One of the best things about this bull is his Net Worth dam. She is an amazing-producing, great-looking cow with a 112 weaning ratio on five calves.

REGARD

This bull is a tank—big in every shape and form. He’s an exceptionally large-framed bull packed with muscle, and the amount of dimension he carries is impressive. If you sell calves by the pound, this is your bull. His growth EPDs are off the charts, and they are legit. He posted a 129 weaning ratio and a 125 yearling ratio.

LOUP VALLEY GROWTH FUND

A very nice Growth Fund son who has only gotten better as he’s grown older. He’s

extremely deep-bodied bull with incredible volume. This Growth Fund sire

been exciting to watch.

L V MISS RELIABLE 3107

This Stunner son will immediately catch your eye when you walk in the pen. He’s bigframed, incredibly deep-ribbed, and attractive-fronted. A structurally correct bull, he’s hard to flaw. Behind every good bull is a good cow, and this bull’s dam is phenomenal. She’s bigger-framed, deep-bodied, and perfect uddered, with a weaning ratio of 107 on six calves.

VALLEY GROWTH FUND 3197

A moderate-birthweight Growth Fund son with explosive growth, he is extra soft-made and one of the deepest-bodied bulls on the sale. The docility in these Growth Fund sons is

This bull is sired by our Coalition son, the top seller in our 2022 sale. He is similar to him in many ways—long-bodied, deep, and stout. You’ll be impressed when you get behind him—he’s truly a standout.

Power bull here! This bull is the real deal, packing a punch. He’s large-framed and loaded with muscle, with impressive shape in his rear quarter and width through his pin bones. We love these Regard sons—they are consistently strong in bone and muscle shape.

One of the few Eastbound bulls on the sale, this sire group has been well-received in previous sales. A very nice bull, he is extended, especially through his front third, and is sound-structured and stout. His pedigree carries many strong maternal genetics. His dam is an excellent-producing Payweight daughter with a weaning ratio of 105 on six calves.

LOUP VALLEY STUNNER 377

A rugged-built Stunner son with extra power and muscle, this bull has impressive shape, especially in his powerful rear quarter. His dam is a great-producing Identity daughter with a weaning ratio of 105 on three calves.

A very impressive individual that’s hard to fault, this bull has plenty of muscle shape and body with a balanced look. Despite being a twin, he turned out

with well above-average weaning and yearling weights.

This bull is a very impressive individual, much like many of the other Niagara sons on the sale. He’s impressively deep-ribbed with added frame size and exceptional volume. Another great aspect of this bull is his dam, who is well on her way to becoming a pathfinder with a weaning ratio of 108 on three calves.

A Regard x Net Worth cross, this bull’s pedigree is stacked with great females. He is powerful like the other Regard sons but slightly more attractive. Keep every single daughter out of this bull. His dam was exceptional, doing everything right with a weaning ratio of 108 on five calves.

A moderate-birthweight Growth Fund son with explosive WW and YW EPDs, this bull is as deep-bodied as you can breed one to be. He is an exact image of his dam, a moderate-framed, huge-bodied Ten Speed daughter who has raised many good

calves.

an excellent producer with a weaning ratio of 110 on six calves.

A very good Niagara son with a lower birthweight EPD. While his EPD suggests he could be used on heifers, I would still be cautious. There’s so much to like about this bull—he is huge-middled. These Niagara sons are very consistent in their type and kind.

ARCHITECT 3104

A larger-framed Architect son with a big hip, he is long-spined and has a

topline. He’s a very attractive bull with excellent structure.

very good bull—big-framed, stout, and square-made. He has a balanced look, is deep-bodied, and posted well above-average weaning and yearling weights. He also has high growth EPDs.

LOUP VALLEY MAVERICK 3424

A powerful Blackhawk son with good frame size. I believe he will sire more growth than his EPDs indicate, as they are lower due to being out of an older cow. His dam was one of the best cows we’ve ever had, weaning 13 calves with a 104 ratio.

A slightly moderate-framed Regard son with incredible depth of body. He

This bull is extremely deep-bodied and an exact image of his dam. His 13-year-old dam is incredibly deep-bodied with a great udder. She is still on the ranch and has a weaning ratio of 102 on 11 calves.

LOUP VALLEY ARCHITECT 3199

Another well-rounded Niagara son that is slightly more moderate. He’s long-bodied, thick-quartered, and free-moving. His Ace dam is an above-average producer with a weaning ratio of 102 on three calves.

A Regard son further down in the sale, he is a standout—heavily muscled and longbodied. You’ll be impressed when you get behind this bull. His Pursuit dam was a great producer with a weaning ratio of 106 on six calves.

This bull will be a standout in his pen and demand your attention. He is large-framed with a lot of shape through his middle, posting a 108 weaning and 106 yearling ratio. These Stunner sons will sire calves with frame size.

LOUP VALLEY IDENTITY 3141

Driving the science of better breeding

There’s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs).

GE-EPDs have become the industry standard for herd improvement, building on decades of science-backed genetic evaluation tools originated and maintained through the American Angus Association®, home to the largest and ever-growing single-breed beef cattle database.

EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide:

Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs

Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency)

The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to:

·  more accurate selection

·  easier identification of genetic outliers

·  the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives

In fact, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they have recorded an average of 15 progeny, depending on the trait. That’s valuable insight, offered regularly through the breed’s weekly national cattle evaluation.

How do you know if EPDs are genomic-enhanced?

Ask your breeder, refer to the registration paper, or look for the AGI GE-EPD logo, Angus GS TM powered by partner Neogen or the HD50k by partner Zoetis. These images indicate animals for which genomic testing has been conducted and incorporated by AGI into GE-EPDs
