Our longtime mo o, “Balanced for Profit,” has been a lifetime journey of selection pressure to focus on making the mother cow be er and more sustainable. The key to the beef business remains fertility. Even though that should go without saying, the push to follow fads or maximize traits often leaves fertility lingering behind.
This past fall, two programs with the same zip code preg-tested cows and resulted in very different outcomes! One, which has used our genetics for 37 years, had only four cows open out of 400 head. The other, a large operation, had nearly 20% open. It doesn’t take a calculator to figure out that won’t work. Fertility truly drives the profit bus. Over 92% of this sale offering is above average for fertility, and over 70% are in the top 25%.
The beef business is also about the end product that ends up on the dinner plate. While the mother cow and maternal qualities are absolutely imperative, the quality of the end product is vital to profitability as well—since prime carcasses still fetch $250-$300 per head over choice grades because consumer demand drives the difference. That’s too much difference to ignore. The question is, can we put the mother cow and the dinner plate together? Absolutely—we have to in order to make the business model work. In this offering, 96% are above average or be er for $Ranch (the CowMaker), and 92% are above average or be er for $Feeder (The Plate). Combined, they make up $Profit, and EVERY single bull in this sale is average or be er!
Something else to pay a ention to as we consider efficiency in the beef business is the comparison between Mature Weight (MW) and Carcass Weight (CW). There are a number of bulls that are low MW but high CW. Real-world curveball selection in this regard is how one can have moderate-size cows that produce heavier carcasses—the best of both worlds. Let’s feed for the cows and put more weight on the rail. A spread worth pursuing.
We have utilized the $Profit system for several years and have marketed approximately 4,000 bulls since we began using it. This sale, we are including $Profit, $Ranch, $Feeder, Fertility, F:G, Mature Weight, Carcass Weight, Marbling, and Ribeye because both genomics and phenotypes are incorporated, giving the most accurate assessment available. As always, pay a ention to percentile rankings within each category.
All the bulls will be PAP tested to identify those suited for high elevation. Nearly half of the sale offering is in the best 25% for PAP EPD. Individual scores will be available before the sale. Please contact us for more information.
We want to thank you for your continued confidence in our program, and we understand that your support allows us to follow our passion for constructing genetic solutions for ranchers’ challenges. We also wish to thank our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for His everlasting, unfailing, and sacrificial love and grace, providing daily nourishment, strength, courage, wisdom, and insight to carry on the work He has afforded us. We are so thankful He continues to guide our steps on life’s journey.
We look forward to seeing you in Sheridan, MT, on April 11th. Please let us know how we can assist in your travel and be er serve your feedstock selection goals.
The very best to you and yours, Larry, Lisa, and Family

$Feeder Index see the section below for complete details of each selection index components
Fertility - Lifetime productivity of an animal’s daughters.
- Lower (negative) means less feed required for gain
CW - Hot Carcass Weight
MW - Mature Cow Weight
IMF - USDA Marbling Score REA - Ribeye Area
- Calving Ease
$Profit
Developed for operations that raise their own replacements and retains ownership on steers and cull heifers, which are marketed on a Quality Based Grid.
$Pro t assumes a bull will sire 100 progeny over his useful lifespan.
$Pro t Combines all the traits that comprise both $Ranch and $Feeder to yield one number that predicts Ranchers' Bottom Lines.
$Pro t Example:
•Bull A has a $Pro t of $15,000
•Bull B has a $Pro t of $10,000
= We would expect Bull "A" to produce an additonal $5000 of pro t to the ranch over his service life ($50 per calf x 100 calves) when compared to Bull "B".
Multi-generational use of $Pro t will move both $Ranch and $Feeder in a positive direction, just not as fast as the singular use of $Ranch of $Feeder.
$Ranch
Developed for cow/calf producers who retain their own replacements and market 100% of the steer calves and cull heifers a er weaning.
Traits included in $Ranch: Fertility, Milk, Weaning Growth, Cow Herd Feed Intake and Mature Cow Size
$Ranch Example:
•Bull A has a $Ranch of $80
•Bull B has a $Ranch of $40
= We would expect Bull "A" to produce $40 per head increased pro t when compared to bull "B" in a cow/calf operation that raised their own replacements and sold all other calves at weaning.
Multi-generational use of $Ranch will ultimately result in: moderation in mature cow size, improved fertility, modest gains in weaning weight, improved stocking rates and ultimately - increased pounds of calf harvested per unit of feed/land resource.
$Feeder
Developed to compare how bulls will impact pro tability in the post-weaning phase (weaning to harvest).
= We would expect calves sired by Bull "B" to earn $50 per head increaded pro t between weaning and harvest when compared to calves sired by bull "A".
Use of $Feeder in sire selection will maximize Feedlot Closeouts, but with no regard for the cow herd. us $Feeder should be used by herds that purchase their replacement females.
5L Simplified Star Ranking
For the first time 5L Ranch has implemented a simple star system to give you an easy, quick glance tool to find the bulls that best fit your goals and needs in our genetics. These stars are designed to direct quick and easy identification of bulls for further consideration, a short list. Then from this more manageable and targeted list one can drill down deeper into the individual traits to make the selection of which bulls would best fit your needs and goals. Below is the breakdown of what each category means and how we see them being used:
AAAAA - Top 20% in the given category
AAAA – Top 21% to 40% in the given category
AAA – Top 41% to 60% in the given category
AA – Top 61% to 80% in the given category
A – Top 81% to 100% in the given category
AllAround is just as the name implies – over the entire sale group which bulls do everything well. It includes post-weaning characteristics (feedlot performance and carcass value, with material characteristics. Presented in a userfriendly 5-star system, the more stars the greater the profitability expected to be generated by a bull’s progeny across the various segments of the beef supply chain.
Calving Ease – whether you’re looking for a bull to use on heifers or cows the CalvingEase stars can help you quickly identify either. 5-star calving ease bulls are those that provide us with the greatest degree of confidence when being used on virgin heifers. Conversely, 1-star individuals should only be used on mature cows. Presented in a 5-star system, the greater the number of stars, the higher the calving ease genetics.
CowMaker – A fertile and productive cow is the foundation of any herd, use 5L CowMaker to select for bulls to make the next generation of females be er than the previous. Focusing on the maternal traits like fertility, cow size and feed requirements, if you raise your own replacements 5-star CowMaker bulls should be at the top of your list. Presented in a 5-star system, the more stars the greater the
YieldStar – If your goal is to make the absolute best quality, most profitable carcasses YieldStar is the ranking to use. Focused on terminal traits like high average daily gain, efficient feed conversion, carcass weight and quality grades, 5-star YieldStar bulls will produce calves that ca le feeders want to feed. Presented in a 5-star system, the more stars the higher the predicated profitability of feeding calves produced by those genetics.
Disposition - All bulls have been individually scored for disposition by sorting them off in an alley between two scorers to evaluate their reaction and comfort level to being singled out. This 3-star evaluation can be interrupted as:
AAA – Easy to handle, stands quietly in the alley while scoring and is comfortable being singled out of the group
AA – Easy to handle, not as comfortable being singled out but respectful and not challenging toward the scorer
A – More nervous and anxious while being handled. Looking for a way to get away or challenge being singled away from other animals
WideBody – WideBody has been a selection staple at 5L Ranch for many years for bulls we use in our program and our astute customer have used to add capacity and shape to their cows. Higher WideBody scores indicate ca le that are wider-based, with a softer flank, a wide spring of rib, bold rib shape, deep heart girth, and more depth and thickness in the hindquarters.
AAA – Everything we’ve come to expect in a 5L WideBody with just a bit more! Noticeably wider across their top and heart girth, soft in flank, bolder and deeper rib shape with an exceptionally wide base
AA – Prototypical 5L WideBody deep in the rib, lots of shape through their middle, wide base, plenty of thickness
A – More traditionally made or heifer type, not as powerfully muscled while still conformationally correct
First of several Augustine sons today—ideal for adding heterosis while keeping your calves solid red, polled, and profitable. 111M excels in $Profit and $Feeder, with top ultrasound ratios for IMF and REA. His dependable Defender dam has weaned 6 calves with a 105 avg. ratio and a 366-day calving interval.
Lot 5...
The incredible dam of this Doubleback son maintains a 369-day calving interval and a 118 average progeny weaning ratio. If you think you’ve been leaving money on the table due to lighter carcass weights or yield grade 4 discounts, this bull could be the cure with his best 2% ranks for carcass weights and 3% ranks for REA.
For Big PRIME premiums, you need calves sired by elite marbling bulls like 81M. A son of 5L Genuine 1603195C, he ranks in the top 2% for carcass weight and 3% for REA.
Lot 9...Genuine also earned the reputation of siring beautiful uddered daughters, a trait that comes from his dam, 1603 who at age 11 had an udder any 3-year-old would have been proud of.

“Solid cows that will breed back and pay the bills”
“Great udders & easy eshing”
“Our 5L herd has proven to be extremely fertile and resistant. They have good feet, and GREAT udders They are easy eshing and have the elasticity and e ciency to “bounce back” on dry feed in the fall after shipping. This allows us to winter them on much less hay than most our neighbors, as we can simply maintain body weight, rather than have to put weight on with hay. It doesn’t matter if they are 3, or 12 years old. None of them get special treatment to perform. Having a family that works with me, I can’t a ord to have anything that gets worked up easily. 5L cows, and bulls, nd that happy medium in their disposition, so that they aren’t easily worked up and dangerous to be around, but still move and trail out to pasture. Overall they are solid cows that will breed back and pay the bills on any operation, and they will look good while doing so.”

In Loving Memory of
Over the Years, 5L Red Angus grew into one of the very few Red Angus bull suppliers for DeLong Ranches in Winnemucca, Nevada. We came to treasure the short time we’d get to visit with Will DeLong both at our April bull sale and again during our annual trek to the Superior Sale at Winnemucca, Nevada. As a rancher and a cattleman, Will was without peer, and we’re thankful for any of his knowledge, savy or skill that rubbed o on us or our operation over the years. When it came to buying bulls, Will was a master. He, his superior rep and good friend, Jim Davis, and his fellow high desert ranchers would work each pen, evaluating each bull’s feet, legs and phenotype to ensure they’d hold up in country where you only run 3-4 pairs per section. Before he ever got to the sale, Will would have a spreadsheet sorted with candidate bulls identi ed that would maintain the desired trajectory for those traits Will considered economically relevant for DeLong Ranches. Annually, Will reviewed the genetic trends that determined calf value and leveraged those against the traits needed to build more e cient, fertile replacements. Will’s balanced approach never allowed progress in growth and carcass traits to have adverse consequences for the cow herd. DeLong Ranches was named Red Angus Commercial Producer of the year and won many GridMaster awards. Just last year a set of Delong steers graded over 50% PRIME with only 2.4% Yield Grade 4’s. Another friend of ours fed a set of their heifers that gained over 4.24 lbs/day and converted at 5.23 lbs Dry feed per lb. of gain. Over time, the reputation of their cattle became baked into the market and when the DeLong cattle would show up on Superior’s video monitors, we’d get ready for a new market high that day.
We felt fortunate to be the winning bidder on both DeLong Ranch steers and heifers last summer. The steers are on feed in Chappell, Nebraska and doing great. The heifers are soon to be featured in our commercial replacement sale, which was always the plan. A tribute to Will in our sale catalog wasn’t, and it’s heartbreaking. Will was humble and unassuming. He showed up with a rm handshake and a genuine smile, but when the sale started, he generally le the rest of us considering our second choice bulls. His loss is tragic for his wife Katie and their kids, Billy, Matti and Louise, his parents, John and Judy, and for our industry in the western United States. The Mehlho family is blessed to have called him our friend and for our genetics to have played a small role in developing the genetic legacy that is the DeLong Ranch Red Angus herd Will DeLong: January 16, 1974 - November 13, 2024.

(5L’s Black Red carriers) have been instrumental in the development of out-cross Red Angus genetics, by incorporating high accuracy Angus carcass genetics into Red Angus’ Total Herd Reporting Database, which is be er suited for prediction of reproductive traits. The benefits of combining the best of both Red and Black populations are shared by both Red and Black bull customers. Black Angus herds will still have almost entirely black calf crops but will access superior out-cross maternal genetics. Red Angus customers should expect approximately 50% Black calves when these bulls are used on solid Red Angus cow herds.
