Hello all, this has been a very busy year and I want to use this opportunity to keep our membership abreast of tasks your board has been working on this year. With the help of Compeer Financial, we have been working to track, and simplify our budget and financial recordkeeping system. Secretary Lisa Davis has been working very long hours with Compeer Financial and BMO Harris Bank setting up our accounts utilizing an updated Quick Books program and an invoice system to track all of our income and expenses for future ease of finalizing budgets and filing of taxes.

I believe the use of Compeer Financial, and BMO Bank’s services will benefit our association now and in the future. We are on track to make our association better and stronger capitalizing on sound financial records and tracking of those records that will allow us to move forward with the association.
By: Rick Starck WHA PresidentThe board and Royalty committee are also working with HYFA in tracking all income and expenses so we can inform our membership where we are at in our goal to selfsustain our royalty program while keeping compliant with all our financial obligations.
Speaking of royalty, our own AHA Queen Madison Katzenberger and WHA Queen Marie Prodell represented us well at the Hereford Junior Nationals. I want to thank our junior committee members and all who volunteered to host a very organized show!
The board will meet in late July to review topics related to the WHA State sale. We will review the consignors’ surveys that were returned, and discuss issues brought up to board members during the year by both consignors and buyers. We will make changes, if any, to continue to provide buyers great cattle and sellers an excellent avenue to market their animals.
There are many positive things going on within our association. We have met hundreds of people attending farm and cattle shows this year provided valuable information on Hereford cattle and the WHA members who raise them. The Junior National Hereford Show was amazing and what I saw of it went without a hitch. AHA executive members praised the support and work received by our members. I heard the Jack Pot show went well this summer and our scotch comb program continues to be a hit among the local and county fairs.
I’d like to finish by again thanking the WHA board and everyone who volunteers their time and efforts in WHA activities. Without your help, we would not be able to showcase our cattle, our association, or our people!
We have a nice selection of Distinct’s progeny for sale… come on over and select your next herd bull, replacement heifer or show prospect.
AHA Territory 5
Field Staff

noahb@hereford.org
What is the next goal in your operation? Take a second and think about that question. Maybe you have a clear answer or maybe it is a little harder to define. Recently, our AHA field staff was able to hold our annual field staff meeting in Kansas City. While there, we were challenged by our AHA leaders to define successful operations in our territory and give a reason why we thought so. Each of us brought up the term “Customer Service” when looking at those successful operations. So, I am here to challenge all Hereford breeders out there to incorporate customer service into their next set of goals for their operation.
Hereford cattle are so versatile and vital to the beef cattle industry. These cattle provide value in the commercial cow-calf operations, feedlots, any Hereford seedstock operation, and even in the show ring. However, one thing we need to do as breeders and producers, is continue to promote this breed. We must be able to keep the demand for Hereford cattle as high as we can, so that our CUSTOMERS can see more profit. Here are a few examples.
The Hereford breed has proven value in adding bulls into commercial operations. These F1 calves are some of the most impressive calves out there, but commercial producers may still need help marketing them. Offer to buy the females back for your own commercial herd. Help make the connection with them to send them to the Greater Midwest Hereford Sale on January 4, 2024. Do what you can to help get these calves sold. After all, promoting these cattle only helps promote your program since they are out of your bull.
Hereford cattle and Hereford-based crosses are excelling in the feedlot. Grades are going up and therefore, so is the demand. Our Certified Hereford Beef program needs our breeders help. Strike up a conversation with the local restaurant or grocery store. Tell them about CHB and what makes is desirable. You may not think that one conversation matters, but I promise, if a store manager hears a question or two about CHB, they are going to be looking into it to see if they can make money selling it in their store.
For those of you selling show cattle, take the time to help your customers. Not everyone buying a show project is going to win every show, however, they are buying so their kids can grow as individuals. Help them to do that. Help teach when applicable, go to their farm, and watch them compete. These kids are doing a lot of work promoting an animal you raised…go and help them do it.
These ideas are a start to the idea of customer service, but obviously there are many more. A little extra work may be added, but the benefit of keeping a customer coming back (with more money in their pocket) will work wonders for your operation.
Lastly, I want to congratulate the WHA and WJHA on a wonderful Junior National Hereford Expo. This was one of the best JNHE’s to date, largely in thanks to all the help and support you all provided. Thank you to everyone out there that lent a helping hand. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Wisconsin had 130 head of cattle and 61 exhibitors at the “Mad Dash to the Hereford Bash” Junior National Hereford Expo, Madison, Wisconsin, July 8 – July 14.
The Wisconsin juniors hosted/sponsored three very successful programs to welcome other juniors to our state;
• Goose Chase Scavenger Hunt – 32 teams of 10 juniors each spent the first three days of JNHE completing challenges, hunting for items like a cheese head and searching out other juniors that fit a set profile. Awards were given to the top three teams. We heard many great comments back about how much fun this activity was!
• Taste of Wisconsin Fun Night – Wisconsin helped host the meal for all 1500 attendees of the Mad Dash to the Hereford Bash. This special meal wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of the Donation Heifer program! Thank you to all who support our juniors.
• Queen’s Tea stuffed animals – The WJHA sponsored the stuffed animals Queen Madison Katzenberger gave to each participant in the Queen’s Tea. Every young lady took home a special friend as a reminder of their time at the event.

Bull Tests are a great way to evaluate herd genetic programs and compare animal performance across cattle breeds within uniform environment and management practices. Within the state of Wisconsin, there are two Bull Test opportunities:
• Wisconsin Beef Improvement Association’s Central Bull Test University of Wisconsin Pioneer Farm, Platteville, WI https://wisconsinbeef.com
• St. Croix Valley Bull Test
UW River Falls Mann Valley Farm, River Falls, WI
https://scvbt.wordpress.com
Both tests have fall entries, with cattle fed at the station through the winter months. Bull weight gain and performance is measured during the feeding period, and breeding evaluation is completed prior to sale in the spring.
As you evaluate your 2023 calf crop, if producing quality Hereford bulls is part of your herd’s breeding program goals, remember that participating in Bull Tests is a great way to showcase your herd’s genetics, and highlight the benefits of the Hereford Breed! For more information about the bull tests, please visit the websites listed above.
The Wisconsin Hereford Association had a busy week at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, July 18-20, 2023! The 2023 WI Farm Technology days were held at the Badger Steam and Gas Engine Club’s grounds at Baraboo, WI. Thank you to all that stopped by at the booth in the Beef Tent to say hello to the WHA!
Many thanks to Pierce's Hereford Haven, Baraboo, WI, for bringing their bull CRR 971 Levitate 142, to display at the booth. He was a great draw for the WHA booth! The Pierce's sponsored a contest "Guess the Bull's Weight", an opportunity for a $200 cash prize! Many guesses were placed…988 to be exact, and the winners were Dale Shultz and Caroline Burns. Both guessed the exact weight, at 2,145 lbs. Dale and Caroline will “split” the prize at $100 each. The guesses ranged from 500 lbs to 28,000 lbs. Thanks to all that participated in the contest!
Thank you Ken and Sandy Pierce, and the Pierce Family for all of your support of the WHA, and time spent at 2023 Farm Technology Days!
The WHA Booth was well stocked with information about the WHA and Wisconsin Herefords, with the new Member Directory, 70th Anniversary Issue of the Wisconsin Review, and the WHA Brochure. Literature about the Hereford Cattle Breed from the American Hereford Association was available also. And of course, there was plenty of candy, pens, and magnets to give away too! Thank you to Doug and Becky Schulz, and Lisa Davis, for volunteering at the WHA booth!
The WHA hopes to see you at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days at Cadott, WI in 2024!

1 heaping Tbsp. brown sugar per pound hamburger used Brown hamburger, onions and salt and pepper together. I usually just put ketchup, BBQ sauce in with the hamburger mixture. (If the ketchup or BBQ bottles are near empty, I add some water to bottles and clean the bottles out, pouring into the hamburger.) Add a little squirt of mustard in and add the brown sugar. I taste and add what is needed and add a little water if it needs to be juicier.

Hey everyone! It is Marie Prodell here, your 2023 Wisconsin Hereford Queen! I hope you all are having a fantastic summer, just like I have! From planning many events like the Goose Chase Challenge at JNHE, this summer I have been interning at Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy in the Feed/Nutrition and Youth Development Departments! I have learned a lot about how to balance rations, all the factors that go into feeding a large-scale operation, and how to think differently about work situations! Learning more about the cropping side of things was something I wasn’t too knowledgeable about and took a lot away from! From operating the scale house during harvest to going crop scouting and hauling seed to fields, I have learned a lot about crop maturity, harvest days and processes, and over all feed storage!
On the Youth Development side of my internship, I have been a part of the Pagels Family Business Boot Camp planning committee! We hosted this year’s boot camp in early June. Glad to say it was a successful event by far! We are now planning for next year’s boot camp and are trying to grow the program to fit around 50 kids from the local community and schools! More kids call for more activities and planning! I got the chance to travel with the committee down to other camps that were hosted and conferences throughout the summer to learn about youth development and growing as a leader! Through this part of my internship, I realized that I loved working in Ag event planning and educating youth!
Okay, let’s talk about how the WI Hereford Royalty Program has been busy the last few months! Our first event of the year was the WI Hereford State Preview Show and many of our girls got the opportunity to represent the Hereford breed ringside handing out awards! It was a great opportunity to connect with many Hereford breeders from WI and other states and congratulate them on their success! Some of our members were even successful and it was captivating seeing these ladies be successful with their Herefords!
Not long after, we had the Junior National Hereford Expo in Madison, WI! What an adventure this was! Throughout the week I had to full fill my royalty duties in the show ring and representing WI Herefords! I got the opportunity to work all week with other state queens, and even the National Hereford Queen, Madison Katzenberger! I learned a lot about what my goals are forthcoming and how inspirational these other ladies are! One of my favorite parts of the week was when all our girls got the opportunity to work the show ring with the other royalty! Seeing their eyes and smiles full of joy and passion light up the show ring as all the WHR walked in a class together will be a memory I will never forget!
The WHR also had a tremendous success with our Pop Tops for a Cause service project! Some of our girls went around promoting the project and even got to work on their public speaking skills at JNHE! They all did a great job promoting the project and the Wisconsin Hereford Royalty Project! We are still collecting pop tops until January 1, 2024! So, tell your family, tell your local businesses, and tell your friends to continue to keep collecting! We will be at the WI State Fair, World Beef Expo, and FOLOW! Otherwise feel free to mail in your pop tops to me at N7145 Pleasant Rd, Algoma WI 54201! This project allows us to give back to an organization that has affected many of our girls and their families! Keep collecting! I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming Hereford events in the future! As always, let’s come home to Hereford!
a When Mark was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s in 4-H, he showed Jersey cattle, but had friends that showed Herefords. Mark has great memories of helping his friends with their Hereford Cattle at the fair and enjoyed how nice and docile the Herefords were. Deb also has Hereford Connections, as her Family enjoyed raising Hereford Cattle in South Dakota in the 1930’s – 1950’s. So, the Schoen’s chose Hereford Cattle due to great memories and the docility of the breed!
a Mark is a Pastor at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in St. Croix Falls, WI. Mark and Deb purchased their farm, which is 3 miles from Church, in 2001. The home farm is approximately 70 acres, with 35 acres in pasture. There is an additional 30 acres of summer pasture. Big Rock Creek, a spring-fed trout stream, runs through the farm.
a The farm’s first Herefords were purchased in 2002 from WHA Member Fred Larson, of Larson Hereford Farms, Spring Valley, WI.
a The farm’s motto is “Christ the Rock & Rock-Solid Seedstock.” The motto combines the Schoen’s commitment to genetic quality of the cattle, and highlights an opportunity to witness through Mark’s calling as a Lutheran Pastor.
a Large rounds of grass hay are made on the farm. Cows are rotationally grazed through cool-season pastures of brome, timothy, and orchardgrass. Cows will spend 3-4 days up to several weeks in paddocks, depending on the season and grass production. The Schoen’s fertilize their pastures to maximize forage production.
a Adult cows receive grass hay and Vita Ferm mineral. Cows are expected to work, and maintain flesh on forage diets. Growing heifers are fed good quality grass hay, and grain until breeding. After breeding, heifers stay well-conditioned on grass hay.
a 20 cow/calf pairs are maintained at the farm. Cows calve in February and March. The Schoen’s focus on cleanliness of their calving barn and comfort of the cows and newborn calves.
a The Schoen’s emphasize quality genetics and functionality of the cows. They want to build cattle with desirable phenotypes, quality feet, and good marbling. Deb carefully researches EPD’s and pedigrees of the genetics utilized at the farm.
a Open heifers for Breeding Stock
a Bulls for Hereford Herds or crossbreeding programs
a Feeder steers and heifers
a Cattle are marketed through Facebook and the farm’s website
a Cow families include the genetics of Advance 5139R, Proficient U201, Ridge, Miles McKee, and Final Print. The Schoen’s work to maintain the benefits of Horned genetics but breed the horns out. Their recent donor cow is a Miles McKee x Proficient U201.
a AI Sires include NJW Ridge, Final Print, Validated, Historic, Perfecto 84F, and Innisfail Trademark 1939 ET. The farm’s Herd Sire is WHR 4020 Bottomline 570HET, owned with White Hawk Ranch. He is homozygous polled an in the top 3% for carcass traits. a Besides careful genotype selection, the Schoens believe firmly in selecting for functionally sound phenotypes. Mark emphasizes the need for Hereford Breeders to cull hard to prevent proliferating and passing along undesireable functional traits, such as bad feet or vaginal prolapse. Even though culling decisions can be very difficult to make, it’s important to do what is best for the Hereford breed in the long-term. The Hereford breed has many great traits! Mark notes that it’s important to highlight those and continually work on maternal traits, hooves, gait, etc. – all of the traits need to work together to create the best quality cow for the future of the Hereford breed.
a The Schoens’ see value in WHA membership through the networking and referral opportunities through the WHA. They also value placing ads through the WHA, in the Wisconsin Review and the Membership Directory. In addition, they appreciate the opportunity to place ads in the Market Place, in the Wisconsin Review.
a Rev. Mark enjoys coming home at the end of the day and working with the cattle, and making decisions for them that will continually improve the Hereford breed. Mark works to prioritize in his Church and Visiting schedule, to balance both ministry and cattle, and appreciates the understanding that his congregation shows. Mark and Deb enjoy spending time outdoors with the cattle as God’s creatures. They greatly enjoy the Hereford Cattle breed! The Schoens’ focus on optimizing genetic quality of their herd to create Rock-solid seedstock that perform efficiently in the pasture to provide consumers with great tasting, well-marbled Hereford beef!
