To all military personnel in our circle of friends and customers: We can never begin to thank you enough for what you have done and continue to do for our country. God bless each and every one of you. The Moser & Michaelis Families
Homozygous Black...Homozygous Polled ~ Exactly what do those terms mean? In our college genetics books, homozygous is defined as having identical alleles at corresponding loci on homologous chromosomes so that the organism breeds true with respect to these loci. (the definition hasn't changed in 30+ years!) Homozygous Black: In simpler terms, a homozygous black bull gives a black gene to his offspring every time. He "breeds true" for color. Black, which is dominant to the red color in cattle, will be the color of every animal sired by a homozygous black bull. IF you have cows that carry the dilution gene, (yellow and gray females carry the dilution gene, as do some lighter red cows) they may give that dilution gene to their offspring, which "dilutes" the black color to gray. The homozygous black bull has nothing to do with the resulting gray individual. Homozygous Polled: Again, a homozygous polled bull will "breed true" and give a polled gene to each of his offspring. The polled gene is dominant to the horned gene, so all offspring from a homozygous polled bull will be polled.
I get asked often where the cover photos come from for our catalog every year. The answer is simple. They come from pictures taken during our every day life. Whether we’re gathering, calving, feeding, moving, working or checking our cattle, my iPhone has become a pretty handy little device. This catalog is my compilation of our year’s work and day-to-day life, and our family is proud to share it with you.
Special thanks to LivestockDirect.net for advising on and the printing of this representation of who we are. -Lisa Moser A Rock Solid Program...the Moser Ranch

SimAngus Simmental Angus Harry and Lisa Moser and Family 3063 26th Road, Wheaton, Kansas 66521 Welcome to our Family's 23rd Bull Sale! We appreciate you taking the time and having interest in our 2014 sale offering. Our focus, as it has always been, is to improve your bottom line with genetics that will efficiently produce a product that is of high quality and in demand to meet what our industry-and most importantly what the consumer-wants. This is our way of life, we have to do it right to survive. As in the past, our catalog is in sale order. To do it that way is not an easy task. We wait until ultrasound and gain information is gathered and studied before we sort the bulls for sale order. Blending numbers, phenotype, ET sets of brothers and different breeds of cattle provides a long afternoon's challenge to lay out the catalog, but it happened on October 11th. Conversation is usually lively during the "preliminary sort", as Rex calls it, when we're wondering perhaps why we can't get the 94th bull farther up the sale order because he is such a good one?! The 2014 offering is the most even, strongest set of bulls we have ever raised. Calving ease, performance, carcass, maternal-we have the bulls to cover your needs. Our sale has been described "as good, honest cattle selling to good, honest cattlemen and women." Give us a call or shoot us a text or an email and make arrangements to come and see the bulls here on the ranch prior to sale day. Or, if you'd rather, a bull video will be online at www.moserranch.com or the LivestockDirect.net website. We are in uncharted waters in the current cattle market. It is the best time we have ever seen in this business. Still, there is an opportunity out there to be at the top of today's market with cattle of proven genetics and proven track records in the industry. Join us to become a part of our total industry focus to raise the best possible beef. Being seedstock and commercial producers puts us in a somewhat unique position from many purebred breeders. It was as exciting for us to sell a heavy draft of preconditioned bawling spring steers weighing 659# for $2.5925 on October 7th as it will be to sell bulls on November 8th. Our intention on the Moser Ranch is to raise cattle that will work for you, not the other way around. Along that line, we develop our breeding stock much differently than most breeders. Please read about our bull management on page 6. What you will find in our bull pens are calves that are ready to go to work and hopefully stay in your herd for many useful years. Thank you for considering Moser Ranch genetics. See you Left to Right: Scarlet, Cameron & Carrie Moser, Harry & Lisa Moser, on November 8th-The Moser and Michaelis Families Tucker, Tate, Kendra & Rex Michaelis, Kayla Moser
Meet the Owen Family-Our Guest Consignors and Our Friends We have been blessed to get to know Aaron and Jennie and their family as a result of the six years that Aaron and Harry spent together on the Board of Trustees of the American Simmental Association. This is the seventh year they have joined us in our sale. Their bulls were delivered to our ranch in May and have been handled and managed right with our bull prospects. The guarantee on their bulls is like ours-they stand behind their cattle 100%. The Owen Brothers Cattle Company (look for the OBCC prefix on their bull lots) has a great cattle program down in the Ozark area of Missouri, just 15 miles west of Springfield.

Buyer Information DELIVERY Moser Ranch will pick up the first $250/head on transportation expenses on bulls averaging $4500. We will assist buyers in making the most economical trucking arrangements for other bulls. Transportation is at buyer's risk; please insure your purchases. See insurance information below.
BULL MANAGEMENT Fall bulls were fenceline weaned on fescue on April 15, 2014 and remained on grass. Spring bulls were weaned in large lots in September 9, 2013, then wintered on a growing ration. ALL BULLS spent the spring and the first part of the summer of 2014 on fescue, and were moved to native grass on July 15. On August 7th, bulls were weighed in for the start of the gain test. Here at home, fall bulls have been running in an 80 acre pasture, and spring bulls in a 30 acre pasture. Target gain was 3.25#/day. Results are listed in the catalog. The ration consists of corn silage, ground grass hay, wet distillers, cracked corn and a base mineral & vitamin premix. WE FEEL VERY STRONGLY THAT "RANGE DEVELOPING" OUR BULLS AND NOT PUSHING THEM HARD ON TEST allows them to express their genetics on a more realistic level, stay more structurally sound, and they are presented to you at sale time in "breeding appropriate" condition scores. Please remember that these bulls are still growing, and will continue to do so for at least the next year to year and a half. Until breeding season, they need to stay on a similar plain of nutrition, 5-7# of grain in addition to silage or hay.
BULL CARE OPTION If you are unable to take your bull(s) at this time, we offer the following care option: We will feed any purchases free of charge until December 1, 2014. From December 1st to April 1, 2015, we will feed the bulls for $250.00/head. This fee includes normal care and feeding. Any out of the ordinary expenses-vet, etc.- will be the responsibility of the owner. After April 1, a charge of $3.00/head/day will incur. We ask that you pay the $250.00 up front at settlement. eller will accept NO responsibility for injury or death of animal(s). They will be cared for as they have been prior to the sale. We think you will find this is a very good offer. INSURANCE At settlement, the option will be available for you to purchase "Full Mortality Coverage" on your bulls for death from all natural causes and accidental causes including life-threatening injuries. Rates are as follows: 1 month 2.4% of purchase value, 3 months 3.6%, 6 months 4%, 1 year 6%. Sheila Jensen, Jensen Livestock Agency, will be available on sale day for any buyers wishing to purchase insurance. If you have any questions prior to saletime, please call her at work 785.374.4372, or call her cell 785.262.1116 or visit her website: www.jensenbros.net and click on the "Insurance" link. IF BULLS WINTER AT THE MOSER RANCH, WE ENCOURAGE COVERAGE.
CATALOG EPD INFORMATION Fall 2014 breed average EPDs for active Simmental, SimAngus and Angus sires can be found on page 7. You can directly compare the Moser Bulls of each breed to the current active sires for each respective breed on page 7. YOU WILL LIKE WHAT YOU SEE HERE CONCERNING MOSER BULLS. ULTRASOUND Craig Hays from Critical Insights collected ultrasound images on spring bulls on May 1, 2014. He also collected ultrasound images on our fall bulls on October 2, 2014. The Hays & Larson families own Critical Insights Inc., an ultrasounding service in Maryville, MO. We have been providing ultrasound information in one form or another to our customers since 1996. The following thoughts about ultrasound are important to remember: 1. The American Simmental Association utilizes the ultrasound information in the calculation of the carcass EPDs that they generate. So, the data itself is already figured into the carcass EPDs. We feel that using the carcass EPDs is a more accurate way to make your selection than by using the adjusted raw ultrasound data. To help with this transition, we have developed a "Plus System" and also supplied you with the in-herd ratio for each measured trait. The system reads as such in the catalog: +++ means a bull scanned in the upper 1/3* for that trait (REA or MRB)
HERD HEALTH Dr. Randall Hobrock, Concordia, Kansas, and Dr. Ann Buchanan, Olsburg, KS, are our herd veterinarians. Health papers will be in order for all cattle. Spring Bull Health Work-May: Vaccinations-Ultrabac 7, Inforce 3, One Shot, Piliguard Pinkeye. August: Bovi Gold 5, One Shot, Dectomax. Fall Bull Health Work-November: Vaccinations-Ultrabac 7, Inforce 3, One Shot, Dectomax. April: Bovi Gold 5 Booster, One Shot, Dectomax, Piliguard Pinkeye.
ALL BULLS HAVE BEEN TESTED FOR BVD PI, TRICHOMONIASIS and LEUKOSIS
++ means a bull scanned in the middle 1/3* for that trait (REA or MRB)
SEMEN TESTING All bulls were semen tested on October 24, 2014 in the event that you want to put them out with cows immediately. For bulls not working until Spring 2015, a re-check is recommended at that time.
+ means a bull scanned in the lower 1/3* for that trait (REA or MRB) (*the upper, middle or lower 1/3 of each bull's contemporary group) If you want the raw data on a particular bull, let us know and we can supply it. 2. Fat thickness amounts vary greatly depending on feeding. Our bulls are set up to gain 3.25#/day on test. THEY ARE NOT FAT.
RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST The Moser Ranch is retaining a 1/3 semen interest in all polled bulls in the offering. You will own full possession and salvage value of the animal. In the event that semen sales become a reality on your purchase, the Moser Ranch is basically retaining the right to 1/3 of the semen sales revenue. If you sell the bull to another cattleman, the 1/3 semen interest is still retained by the Moser Ranch. We reserve the right to collect bulls of interest to us at buyer's convenience and seller's expense.
RULE OF THUMB CONCERNING BULL USE Put a yearling bull with no more than 20-25 cows, and pull him away from the cowherd after a 45 to 80 day breeding season. The older spring born bulls can handle up to 30-35 cows, but please pull them away from the breeding herd after a 45-80 season as well. Young bulls need time to regain condition lost during breeding, and to help them continue to grow and develop properly and rebuild fertility. Fall worming and a complete vaccination schedule is recommended.
EMBRYO TRANSFER Cross Country Genetics North, Westmoreland, KS, has been our ET company since we started doing embryo transfer in 1991. Drs. Kirk Gray and Clay Breiner and their staff have done a great job for us the past 23 years, and we appreciate their efforts.
5% REPEAT BUYER DISCOUNT
In an effort to reward loyal bull customers, we are pleased to continue our "Repeat Buyer Discount" policy this year. This is how it works: If you purchased a bull (or bulls) in our November 9, 2013 sale, you will receive 5% off your total bull purchase in this November 8, 2014 sale. This is a continuous credit policy, which is in effect each year. This 5% discount is determined after all credits have been subtracted from the gross purchase price. FOR THOSE CUSTOMERS WHO USE EXCLUSIVELY MOSER GENETICS FOR THEIR BREEDING STOCK BUT MAY NOT PURCHASE BULLS EVERY YEAR, you can plan on being able to use this repeat discount as well. PLEASE LET THE GIRLS KNOW AT SETTLEMENT IF YOU PURCHASE AND USE MOSER GENETICS EXCLUSIVELY IN YOUR HERD. This is our way of saying "Thank You" to all our bull buyers. -our thanks to Gardiner Angus Ranch, Ashland, KS, for allowing us to use their basic idea of the 5% repeat customer discount and adapt it to our program. (2006)

Guide to American Simmental Association's EPDs and $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires' EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny.
$ INDEXES (DOLLAR INDEXES) Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. $ Indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal's overall impact on your bottom line and are expressed in dollars/cow exposed.
All-Purpose Index (API) Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers & mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade & yield.
Terminal Index (TI) Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade & yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you're keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls.

It is a VALUABLE option! Contact us or call Dan Harris at 785.364.4114 at Holton Livestock Exchange to consign.
Commercial Customer Female Sales (Since 2006) Females sired by Moser bulls and meeting certain other requirements will be eligible to sell at a Moser sponsored annual sale. Our 9th annual sale is scheduled for January 2015, at Holton Livestock Exchange. If you are interested in this option, please check with us one to two months in advance of sale day so that we can determine your opportunities.
SimChoice (Since 2007) Age & Source verifying your cattle pays worthwhile dividends, and the Moser Ranch is proud to offer this service to our customers. 3508 Moser-sired customer calves have been tagged thus far. Contact us to get your calves enrolled. SimChoice is regulated through the American Simmental Association and MicroBeef.
The Moser Ranch Mission Statement for the 21st Century : The Moser Ranch is dedicated to the efficient production of a high quality beef product that will consistently be a very satisfying eating experience. From: Dana Campbell Sent: Monday, August 26, 2013 9:39 AM To: Harry & Lisa Moser Subject: Re: Bull sale The Olie heifer I bought from you at the 2013 Diamonds & Spurs sale had a 60lb. heifer calf on Saturday. Cow and calf are doing great. A picture of the pair is attached. Her milk is average for a heifer. Her udder structure and teat size are excellent. Also, she has a very sweet disposition - she’s nice and calm. Mark 15

A huge THANK YOU to Sandhill Farms-Kevin & Vera Schultz & son Tyler (Vera is holding the cross), Haviland, KS, and Fitzsimmons Land & Cattle-Dean & Jerree Fitzsimmons & daughter Ashley, Cunningham, KS, for joining forces to purchase Moser Ranch’s cross that was donated at the KLA Convention Auction in Wichita on December 5, 2014. A total of $1650 was raised for the Rancher’s Relief Fund in South Dakota to aid “Atlas” blizzard victims. Thank you so much!
A text from Phil Perry, KS, Sept. 14, 2014 concerning this photo of their scale head: “The heavy weight winner today at the Perry Ranch weaning pens. This calf was born Feb 20th, sired by MSR 9214W and out of a mature Angus cross cow.” Longtime customers, Phil and Rhonda bought MSR 9214W in our 2010 sale. The calf being weighed had an adjusted 205 Day Weight of 793# right off the cow.

Please study the Bull Care Option on page 6 of this catalog. If you don’t have a place to keep your bull until you need him next spring, we offer a very economical program to have your bull cared for here at our ranch until April 1, 2015, just as he has been for the past three months. You’ll have your genetics purchased, and you can rest assured your bulls will be ready to work for you next spring. Guaranteed. With the value of cattle being what it is these days, your herdsire purchase represents an investment in quality which deserves protection. Please read on page 6 about an opportunity you will have at our sale to purchase a Comprehensive Insurance Policy on your investment at very reasonable rates. Please call us with any questions you may have about our “Winter Care” program or purchasing insurance on your genetic investment. >From: KEITH BRAMHALL Sent: Thursday, April 03, 2014 6:43 PM > To: moserranch@bluevalley.net > Subject: Thank you > > Harry & Lisa: Thought you might like to know that our early fall >steers topped the market today at Marysville Livestock 589lbs @ >$2.33 ($1372/hd)> 484lbs @ $2.42 > ($1171/hd)- Hfrs 482lbs @ $2.15 ($1036/hd) & 566lbs @ >1.8950($1072/hd). > Thank you for your commitment of bringing quality bulls for us to have >the opportunity to purchase. Our sincerest thanks to these customers and friends who responded with either cattle or cash to aid the victims of “Atlas.” Like Ty Linger, founder of “Heifers for South Dakota” said all along, “Together, we can make a difference.” The bulk of our donations went to the Matt Families. Their story follows on the next page. Thank you, also, to those of you who are reading this sale catalog and gave to that cause in ways we do not know of. May God continue to bless ALL of you for your generosity. Folks in agriculture are special people. Thanks again.

"Atlas" October 4, 2013 ~ The Kenny & Stanley Matt Families October 4, 2013, was a day that will be remembered by stockmen in North and South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming for the rest of their lives, and the stories about that blizzard and the losses those folks endured will be retold generation after generation. The wet winter storm dropped sleet and rain first, then wet snow...for hours and hours and hours. Once the moisture subsided, it was weeks before the prairies were dry enough so that ranchers could drive out onto them and collect the carcasses and haul them to giant burial pits that were dug by the National Guard. The pictures below show losses from the Kenny & Stanley Matt families, Elm Springs, SD. They were the recipients of heifers and money gathered up as a result of our request at our 2013 sale. Harry & Lisa delivered cattle and cash to Kenny, Cindy & Kyler Matt the morning of February 28, 2014. Cindy and Kenny had graciously invited us to stay for lunch, and they told us their story. It was heart-breaking, and eerily it seemed unreal, until they showed us the pictures. They lost over 100 three-year-old cow/calf pairs, all in one pasture, and more in other areas of their ranch. Big strapping Charolais cross calves lay dead beside their mothers...it was awful! But, their faith and their determination is seeing them through. As we left their yard that day, our lives were forever changed...I just visited with Cindy yesterday via email (October 14), and she said they had had a half inch of rain this past Sunday, and things were looking great. God bless all those affected by Atlas. We were humbled to be able to help out in just a small way.
From: Harry & Lisa Moser Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2014 8:49 AM To: ‘Ty Linger’ ; kcmatt@gwtc.net (Kenny & Cindy Matt) Subject: Note we sent today Ty and Rosalie, Kenny, Cindy and KylerAttached please find the note we sent to the North Central RC and D today. Kenny and Cindy, there will be a bit of cash coming your way from a few more of our customers. Like our retired Dutch landlord said in his donation note to us, “Alle kleine beetjes helpen.” (Many small gifts add up) We hope our donation of cattle and cash has helped in some small way as you face the future. Special thanks to you, Ty and Rosalie, for helping us make the personal delivery and with all the paperwork. May God bless each of you as you continue to do His work! Take Care, Lisa and Harry Moser PS Kenny, Cindy and Kyler-We totally forgot to leave some sorting paddles and coffee mugs and gloves for you guys…will get a box ready and get it in the mail to you! Our heads were spinning when we left your place, and we obviously weren’t thinking straight! We received this email from Cindy Matt on March 27, 2014: Today I cried! I sat here & read your email not just once, but over & over again. The feelings were of overwhelming, gratitude, disbelief & joy. The more I thought of what genuine good hearted kind people there are in this world I cried with happiness! I am so proud that there are people like you in this world. I’m in awe of the distance between us but yet it’s like you are right here with us. There are so many people to say thank-you to. Don’t know where to begin or to whom all to thank, but I hope that each & everyone knows how much their kindness & generosity has meant to the ranchers of South Dakota. It’s just head bowing! “October 4th, 2013 The Atlas Blizzard” will never be forgotten, but more so will be the thoughts & generosity that came from so many wonderful people! You will always be forever friends in our hearts! Thank-you! Kenny, Cindy & Kyler
