21 ST ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE and BULL & FEMALE SALE SAT U RDAY, M ARCH 9 | OP EN HOUSE 10 AM | SA LE 1 P M
WELC OME Thank you for attending our 21st annual spring open house and sale. Our goal is to produce cattle the way you do. Even though we have seedstock herds, we treat our cattle like commercial cows. They must calve every year right on schedule or they go to market. If we pamper our cattle and you don’t, then they fall apart for you. These bulls are selected from 10 herds and over 400 cows, so they are truly the best of the best. We have been stacking pedigrees for calving ease, calf vigor at birth, excellent growth, moderate frame, moderate milk, outstanding fertility, superior carcass, and calm disposition for over 30 years. The daughters of these bulls will leave a positive impact on your herd for generations. Cows will be low maintenance, fertile, calm, profitable and productive. We produce cattle that work for you, not the other way around. Please call one of the MBCC team members before the sale to discuss your beef business goals. Our most important job is to help you select the bulls that best fit your goals. In addition to complete EPDs, the bulls are rated from 1-5 stars on various traits. CALVING EASE: 5 = use on heifers, 4 = use on cows and a few heifers, 3 = use on cows, 2 = steer GROWTH, FEMALES, CARCASS: 5 = elite, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = steer DISPOSITION: 5 = very calm, 4 = calm, 3 = average, 2 = steer

SALE DE SCRIP TION Bulls and females will have their base price listed on the ‘buyer board’ and everyone with interest on a particular animal should place their buyer number next to the animal’s ID. If more than one person has interest in buying the animal, each will have the opportunity to bid by $100 (bulls) or $50 (females) increments until we have a buyer. In addition, you are able to bid using LiveAuctions.TV as an Internet partner. If you are the only person with your number next to an animal’s number and there are no online bids, you have the option to buy the animal at the base price. Placing your number next to an animal’s ID does NOT obligate you to purchase or bid on the animal. There are two unique things that we do to help you get one of your top choice animals for the least money - really! First, we ask you to rank your top three bull and female choices. You will have 2 opportunities to rank your selections so you make the sale order. Call Mark before noon on Friday, 3/8 and after discussing your goals, relay your top choices. If you need to physically see the bulls before ranking them, have your list to Mark by noon on sale day. We then make the sale order based on the number of producers that have an animal ranked highly. We have all been to sales where we really want the animal that is slated to sell 4th in the sale, but we also like the 2nd one due to sell. The 2nd animal in the sale sells for $100 below the price you were willing to spend and you think “I just got a bargain.” Now the 4th animal is offered for sale and it brings $400 less than you would have paid. Now you are disappointed. That rarely happens here; 89% of our buyers at a previous sale took home their first or second choice bull. Second, when a buyer purchases an animal, we ask if they are interested in any others. If they need additional animals, their buyer number stays on the board with the selected bulls or females. If not, we erase their buyer number associated with every other bull or female they marked. This allows you to see most of your competition for the animals on your list. Of course, someone online could bid on an animal that you have marked, but we are confident that most of the bulls and females will be sold to those attending the sale in person.
We get many compliments on our unique system. We do not think an auction should prod someone into spending more than they want to spend. We are much more interested in you getting the best animals for your herd goals. We are not interested in squeezing the last dollar out of your bull budget. If you spend $100 less than you anticipated, take your spouse out to dinner! One of our repeat customers calls it the most honest sale he has ever attended, and we appreciate that compliment.

If you cannot attend the sale, please call one of the MBCC Team members before the sale. We will listen to your goals and help you rank your options. The best option is to bid via LiveAuctions. TV. The next best option is to have us bid for you. Last spring we sold 100% of the bulls the day of the open house. If you need a quality bull, please join us Saturday, March 9th! If you have questions about bulls and/or females, call us ahead of the sale and please arrive by 10 a.m. We get very busy after 11:00 and we do not want to neglect you. Getting the right animals is a BIG DEAL and we are glad to help.
THE MISSION OF MIDWE ST BEEF CAT TLE C ONSULTANTS Provide practical information and herd improving genetics that will enhance your bottom line. Raising beef cattle should be profitable and enjoyable. When your cattle are easy calving, efficient, vigorous at birth, low maintenance, easy fleshing, high growth, moderate milk, excellent disposition, fertile and produce a superior carcass, you have the combination of traits that put a smile on your face and money in the bank.

P RO GRE SS I V E C AT TL E A RT IC LE If you get Progressive Cattle magazine, you likely read the January 2024 article on “Genetic Improvement”. A quote by Dr. Darrrh Bullock, University of Kentucky Professor of Animal Science stood out to me. He said, “Crossbreeding provides the most benefit for commercial (beef) systems. It adds heterosis or hybrid vigor, plus breed complementarity, matching the strength of one breed to complement or mask another’s weaknesses.” Breed complementarity is something we need to talk more about. When you think of Angus, you might think “Certified Angus Beef”. Angus are fantastic for adding marbling to your genetics. The current choice – select spread (price discount for select vs choice cattle) is currently $14.67/cwt carcass weight. So, on an 800# carcass, the select carcass is worth $117.36 less than the choice carcass. We need to have 90-95% of our cattle grading choice or prime. Speaking of prime, the current prime premium is $21.17/cwt, so that same 800# carcass would garner a $169.36 premium if it graded prime. So, we should all breed them all Angus to get those big premiums, right? When the Continental breeds came to the US in the late 1960’s they were all poor at marbling because the European grading system is based on lean meat yield. Marbling is not part of the equation. That is why most Gelbvieh, Simmental and Charolais breeders crossed with Angus to get the benefit of the marbling. Marbling is also quite heritable so if you stack a couple of generations of high marbling bulls, bingo, you have mostly choice and some prime beef. The Continental breeds complement Angus because they added muscle and leanness. When the Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska did their studies of all the Continental breeds, Gelbvieh had the highest pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. Excelling at growth AND fertility seemed like a pretty big deal to me so I bought my first Gelbvieh cow in 1985. When you say “Gelbvieh” to a commercial beef producer, they immediately think “maternal”. Gelbvieh cross cows make the best momma cows – fertile, docile, moderate framed with excellent longevity. But can you get 90-95% choice cattle with a few primes? Jeff Ryan from Cresco, Iowa has used MBCC Balancer bulls on his Angus cross cows the past few years and he is getting 50-60% prime grading cattle just like he was getting when using straight Angus bulls. The heifers are being kept back so he adds that $200/cow/year extra profit to his bottom line due to the advantages of having a crossbred cow. Can you have your cake and eat it too? Jeff thinks you can.

Primetime has been a standout since birth. Oustanding phenotype and well rounded EPDs will make thisbull an easy choice to add pounds and style to a calf crop! 20 TH ANNUAL BULL & FEMALE SALE | 7

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DISPOSITION SC ORE S Each bull has a disposition score. We consider “3” to be average in docility, “4” is calm/docile and “5” is extremely calm/docile. We rate the bulls like this because we have some customers that want a very tame bull and that would be a “5”. The bulls rated “4” are well above average and will be very acceptable to all but the most discriminating buyers. If you have narrowed your list to 5 bulls that are perfect for your herd, and some rate “4” and others rate “5” for disposition, do not eliminate the “4’s” thinking they are not good enough. We rated the disposition via a combination of Chris’ assessment of being around them every day along with a “chute exit score”. A bull that rates a “4” is calm in the lot, approaches Chris, but won’t let him pet him. He walks out of the chute at a normal walking speed. A “5” allows you to pet him and walks out of the chute for about 10’ and then stops and turns to look at you.
EPD DEFINITIONS & E X AMPLE S Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are 7-9 times more accurate in predicting the performance of a bull’s calves than actual data (like birth and weaning weight) as they consider all ancestors of the bull to predict the performance of his offspring. Our bull buyers have been buying bulls based on EPDs (and phenotypic traits like frame score) for many years and the proof is in the offspring. When you are looking to buy a bull, the first things you should examine are the bull’s genetics and his EPDs. If you are buying a bull for heifers, buy a 5 star calving ease bull. These bulls are guaranteed to be excellent for calving ease on heifers. This is not a guarantee of never having to pull a calf. It is our best tool to tip the scales in your favor for calving ease on heifers. There are currently 20 EPDs and 3 $ indexes for Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. For Angus there are 22 and 9. It’ can be overwhelming. We have complete EPDs on every bull and to see them go to the breed website and type in the registration number. You can also call me, and I will send you a massive spreadsheet on the entire group. We have outlined the EPDs that we feel are important to your beef business. They are: CED – calving ease direst. Will this bull sire calves that are born easily out of heifers? A higher number means more calving ease. Example:
If a herd has used a bull that has a CED of 12 on heifers and had to assist 15% of the calves, by selecting a bull with a CED of 17 we would expect that you would assist 5% less (17-12 = 5) or only 10%. We certify our Balancer and Gelbvieh bulls at 16 and higher to be “heifer bulls”. Do not even look at this number if you are using the bull only on cows. All our bulls are fine for cows. BW – birth weight. To be honest, I hardly look at this number. If you are buying a heifer bull, look at CED. It is a much better predictor of calving ease than BW. WW – if you sell calves at weaning, look at WW EPD. This is a prediction of what the calves will weigh at weaning compared to another bull. A bull with a WW EPD of 75 should sire calves that weigh 10# more than a bull at 65. I am fine having a bull that is average or a bit below if your goal is to make low maintenance females. High WW EPD is correlated with higher mature weight daughters, so we likely don’t want extremes. (Look also at bull frame score to give a hint on mature size of his daughters). YW – look here if you sell cattle at slaughter. If you have a bull dedicated to producing all slaughter cattle – no heifers kept back - he is a terminal bull and a high YW is desirable. The issue comes if you plan to keep back females out of this high YW bull. Are his daughters going to be really big cows? We can look at carcass weight and frame score to see what that tells us because high CW is correlated with mature size also. Milk – if we compare two bulls – one with a milk EPD of 30 and one at 20 - the bull at 30 will sire daughters that have calves that weigh 10# more at weaning due to the extra milk production of the female. Milk EPD does not measure pounds of milk. We have plenty of milk in the Gelbvieh, Balancer and Angus (and maybe all) breeds. Adding more milk to get more weaning weight is not efficient in most instances. You will see that many of our bulls are around average for milk. More is not better. A heavy milking female in a drought is the most likely female to be open. Not good. PG30 or pregnant at 30 months – this gives a prediction of the likelihood that a nursing 2-year-old breeds back right on schedule to have her 2nd calf. This is an important measure of fertility and is factored into our female star rating. Stay or stayability – this number give a prediction to the question, “Will this cow still be in the herd at age 6?” At today’s prices, if a cow comes up open before 6 years of age, you lost money by selecting her. Longevity is hugely important in the beef industry. We want cows to last 12 or even 15 years or more. Gelbvieh is the highest fertility breed according to research in Nebraska, so if a bull is around breed 20 TH ANNUAL BULL & FEMALE SALE | 17
average, that should be fine. This number is extremely important in our female star ratings.
at our star ratings and call to ask about specific traits you feel are important for your herd. We are here to help.
REA or ribeye area – this is another EPD that gets almost no weighting by me. The average slaughter animal in the US has plenty of ribeye. If you ask the chefs at the high-end steak restaurants they say, “Please don’t make bigger ribeyes. We don’t want a boneless ribeye to weigh 32oz.” Every bull we sell will have adequate muscle.
FEMALE FOCUS
Marbling – we want to sell choice and prime beef, so we feel this is an important number. Marbling is highly heritable and just by stacking 2 generations of good marbling, you will be in great shape. FPI or feeder profit index – this looks at only feedlot traits like YW, carcass weight and marbling. We do not chase high carcass weight in our cattle as it is related to large mature size. So, while our bulls will have very good FPI, they may not be extreme. If you are looking for a terminal bull, a high FPI would be desirable. We have DNA tested every bull in the sale. What this does is improve the accuracy of the EPDs tremendously. Instead of one of our young bulls having no progeny produced yet (which none of them have), it is as if these bulls have sired about 20 calves. Imagine the advantage of buying a bull that has already sired 20 calves? You know much more about calving ease, growth, carcass traits and daughter’s fertility. You can find much more information on EPDs on the web. The bottom line is we really want you to call us before you purchase one of our bulls. Our goal is for you to get the best bull for your herd goals. If you are not interested in getting a master’s degree in genetics, look
18 | MIDWEST BEEF CATTLE CONSULTANTS
We feel that the cow should be the focus of the beef business. If you have cows that are docile, fertile, calve unassisted, love their calves, wean off a big, strapping calf and do for this for 12 or more years, you have the foundation for a very successful beef business. Add excellent marbling and superior growth and you enhance the ability to add value to your calves by selling as freezer beef or selling on a grid value basis when cattle are finished. All the above traits are our focus and are bred into our cattle.
SUGGE STIONS ON HOW TO SELECT A SALE BULL We think selecting bulls for your herd is a really big deal. It can be the difference between a problem-free calving season and one where you count the days until it is over. We want you to smile every time you think about the MBCC bulls you selected for your herd, and we want your bank account to reflect the improvement. We really know the cattle and it is not only in your best interest to get the best bull for your herd goals, it is in our best interest also. We always say, “we do not want you to select a bull from MBCC; we want you to want to select all your bulls from MBCC.” If your first bull exceeds your expectations, chances are you will be back. We have producers that have purchased only
MBCC bulls for the past 15+ years and they keep coming back. We think we are ‘different’ in that we have a team. Mark is a beef cattle veterinarian and has seen ‘problem cattle’ for his entire 40-year career. Chris is a nutritionist and sees similar hard-doing cattle that always need more and more feed. Tom has raised cattle for over 40 years and saw what happened when their cattle got too big. He said his first Balancer bull purchased in 1999, “changed his life”. BJ and John are fairly new to the cattle business and have seen what stacking genetics can do for a herd. Shawn and Heather started out with Angus selected for phenotype and have switched to breeding for balanced EPDs while adding Simmental and Gelbvieh to the mix. Our goal is to produce the opposite of “problem cattle.” We want cattle that work for you and not the other way around. You work hard enough. Your cattle are your employees, and they also need to work hard. We think that the following questions should be answered before you select a bull: 1. Is this bull for heifers, cows, or both? 2. What is the percentage of each breed in your average cow? a. Heterosis is the only free lunch in the cattle business and with a crossbred cow returning over $200/cow/year more in profit vs a straightbred cow, this is very important. We want to optimize heterosis. 3. Will this bull be used to make replacement females or all feeder/slaughter cattle? 4. How do you sell your calves? Feeders, finished, freezer beef, replacement females? After we know these answers, this will narrow your list of bulls that fit your goals. The first thing to do now is look at the bulls’ EPDs. This is the best prediction of what he is going to produce. Next, look at his star ratings. Are these in line with your goals? If not, scratch that bull from consideration. Now look at his genetics. Will he add hybrid vigor? At this point you should have a list of bulls and be able to rank them in order of preference before actually looking at the bulls. This is the time to call Mark and have him record your information so we can make the sale order based on your choices. If you are not ready to do this and want to see the bulls first, that is fine. Have your list to Mark by noon on sale day. Using the data is a superior way to select cattle vs only looking at them and declaring “that bull looks great.” We had a new buyer purchase a bull a few years ago and I told her before she saw the bull, “He’s ugly, but his data says he is going to be a very good bull. Please trust me on this.” I saw the bull and his calves the following year on her farm and she was thrilled with the calves. I tried to get her to sell the bull to a producer that needed a mature bull when he was ~ 4 years old. “No thanks,” she said.” We love the bull and love his calves.”

C U STO ME R Q U OT E “Since incorporating MBCC bulls into our operation, we’ve seen remarkable improvements. Our weaning weights have surged, with our latest set of steers averaging 800# at just 10 months old - our heaviest ever at that age. The uniformity and efficiency of our cowherd have vastly improved, thanks to the majority being sired by MBCC bulls. Notably, the breed back on these females has reached new heights, surpassing the performance of our previous bull’s progeny. Additionally, the docility of our herd has seen a significant boost. Another standout advantage of MBCC bulls is their longevity and resilience. Unlike overfed bulls common elsewhere, our MBCC-bred bulls remain robust and productive, with two still going strong at 7 and 8 years old - a testament to their durability. Furthermore, the quality of our meat has seen a marked enhancement, as noted by all members of our family, thanks to our MBCC-sired calves. With 8 bulls already purchased and even introducing friends to MBCC sales, our confidence in their breeding program only continues to grow. Above all the remarkable improvements mentioned, it’s Mark Hilton’s unwavering commitment that truly sets MBCC apart.
