T
he month of January is a month for new beginnings new year's resolutions, a new calf crop and a new bull sale season. January was kind to the cattlemen in many ways, mild temperatures, record prices for cattle of all ages and an extremely strong demand for Angus genetics. I am extremely thankful for all of these blessings. I wish each and every one of our members a successful production sale whether they sell by auction, consignment or private treaty. The Cattlemen's Classic Angus show and sale will be in Kearney on February 23rd. There are 40 bulls, 1 bred heifer and 13 heifer calves consigned to this year's show and sale. If you are looking for great Angus genetics from across our state, Kearney, Nebraska is the place to be on February 23rd. Our annual state show and sale looks to be another great event. We will be having a board meeting at the end of March where we will review our annual activities and events and plan for the future. Although going to lots of meetings isn't always a top activity for me...I do look forward to this one because it gives our board a chance to set direction for our association for the next few years. Also in March we will be scheduling a planning meeting our Annual Tour which will be in Northwest Nebraska this year. In this issue is an article on our current Nebraska Angus Queen, Cheyann Lovett. She is a hard working, talented, outgoing young lady who has thoroughly enjoyed her tenure as Nebraska
Angus Queen. She has taken her role as Queen seriously as she has been our Association Ambassador throughout our state. She has set lofty goals for her future in the Ag Industry. Check out her story on page 20-21. Part of my job responsibilities is to visit production sales of our members. If you look at our sale calendar, I obviously can't make it to all of them but I do try to make it different sales each year. I hope to see you at one of our member sales this spring. Until next time...
2012 Nebraska Angus Tour to Visit Northwest Nebraska Northwest Nebraska will serve as the location area for the 2012 Annual Angus Tour. Angus seed stock operations will be on display during the late summer or early fall. While the dates have not been scheduled, Nebraska Angus Association members can look for an initial planning meeting sometime in March. Angus breeders in the following counties: Sioux, Box Butte, Dawes, Sheridan and the Western portions of Cherry and Grant; are invited to contact Nebraska Angus Association Sec/Mgr, Suzy Hebbert for more information about participating on the tour. Ms. Hebbert can be reached at the Nebraska Angus Association office 308-577-6700 or by email: info@nebraskaangus.org.

President Speaks By:
Randy Pettera, NAA President
Dear Cattle Producers,
Y
ear 2012 has just begun and it is the first of February. January’s weather was one that will be hard to forget. The record warm temperatures were really nice. Especially for calving season. But, the groundhog has not predicted an early end to winter yet. As I am writing this, the first blizzard of the year is anticipated and it looks like not one part of Nebraska will be spared. I went to the National Western Stock Show and visited with all the numerous Nebraska Angus Breeders who had cattle on display. It was great to see the quality of the angus cattle our Nebraskan’s had on display. Our state is one of the top producers of Angus cattle and these breeders definitely showed off what we have to offer. I would recommend anyone interested in the Angus cattle to become a member of the Nebraska Angus Association. The benefits are way too numerous to mention and is one that each member finds on his own through membership and friendship with others who share the same interests. As I am writing this, the Nebraska Cattleman’s Classic is just around the corner and there seems to be a good showing of interest for the Angus show this year. I wish 6 • March/April • Nebraska Angus News
everyone the best. It isn’t just the winning of shows that counts. It is the participation of all and the friendships that endure over time that matter most. But, I still wish everyone could be number 1 at the show. The Cattleman’s Classic is a great place for Angus producers to exhibit their livestock. Cattle prices have been really good for lightweight calves. Cow prices have been strong. Bull sales have been great. The news is telling us that the big 21st century challenge to farmers will be to raise enough food to feed a growing global population. That is one thing Angus producers have in our favor. Angus cattle and quality are synonymous, so the high demand for our cattle should continue. We will be having a board meeting in March to discuss the activities for the year. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please contact us. The Nebraska Angus Association wants to do everything possible to help all our members.

O
n December 9th, 2011, we lost an amazing showman, a great role model and a friend that I think of often and will remember forever. Tyler Bennett was an active member of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association and served as 1st Vice President. He has been an outstanding role model for the younger members of our Association and will continue to be in the future. Tyler and his entire family were among those that made my family feel welcome into the Association during our first year. I will never forget the kindness and friendship that they've shown to us throughout the short time we've known each other and I hope that someday we can give back even half as much as they've all given us.

Tyler Bennett
I can say with confidence: in the many show days to come, Tyler will be right beside us on the fitting mats, in the stands and in the show ring. In the shadow of such disheartening news, our Winter
Kearney Show and Semen Auction did go on and were a success. It was good for our junior members to be together that weekend, and the show went well. We will be having a meeting on February 25th, 2012 at the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney at 1pm. The officers will meet a little earlier and I will send out an email as to what time that will be, as we get closer to the date. We will discuss updates on the State Show and talk about a couple of things concerning Junior Nationals in Louisville in July. Everybody needs to enjoy this warm, spring-like weather (it’s 70 degrees as I’m writing this!) while we can and pray that winter doesn’t catch up with us in February and March! Yours, Melissa Keyes

Pioneer Awards Lee Sonderup Family
2
011 Nebraska Angus Association Pioneer Producer Award.
The Sonderup Family
Lee Sonderup and his brothers, Dale and Milo, started purchasing Angus cattle back in the 1950's. As Lee and his brothers started growing their herd, Lee's daughters, Lori, Karolyn and Shelly were becoming more involved in 4-H. They convinced their father to purchase some registered Angus breeding heifers as 4-H projects, which were purchased from the Bryce's in Northeast Nebraska. As the girls became more active in 4-H and FFA, they purchased heifers to show from registered breeders across the state. Judy and the girls have fond memories of driving to the Erdmann bull sales in South Dakota. Seeing Dr. Spock for the first time. It was great family memories in the making, while helping to build the Sonderup Angus herd. While at that first Erdmann sale they attended, they purchased some heifers. There they met a couple from Nebraska by the
names of Vance and Connie Uden. The Uden's hauled the newly acquired heifers home and with that became a lasting friendship, although Lee thought Vance charged him too much to transport those heifers. Lee bought numerous females and herd sires from the TC Ranch with some of those bloodlines still tracing back to the herd today. Shelly became active in the Junior Angus Association and was Queen in 1986. She also competed in the National Junior Showmanship contest in Springfield, IL in 1986. After getting married, Lori and her husband Darrel started to get more involved and began AI'ing and using embryo transfer. Through this they were able to build a quality herd which enabled them to start having annual production sales that took place every year from 1990 until 2003. During this time the next generation was getting involved. Darrel and Lori's daughters had started taking a more active role in the operation and were beginning their herd, just like their mother, as a 4-H project. In 2003, the family made the decision to disperse the majority of the cow herd following Darrel's untimely death. Currently the herd consists of around thirty registered cows and around twenty recipient
cows that are used to carry embryo transfer calves. Bloodlines that the cows go back to include Traveler, Bando, New Design 878, New Design 1407, TC Forefront and TC Freedom. They continue to use AI and embryo transfer. The bulls and females are now marketed privately. The family would like to thank the Nebraska Angus Association for this recognition of Lee. It would mean so much to him and does to our entire family. He would be honored to receive this award for his work and love of Angus cattle. He enjoyed going to many production sales with family and friends. It was a highlight of his life to be able to visit about Angus cattle.
T.L. Sterner Pioneer Award T.L. Sterner was a businessman involved with real estate and insurance, and in the 1950's most of his customers were farmers and cattlemen. His cattle friends all had Angus and he decided to join the Angus crowd and in 1950 became a member of the American Angus Association. In 1963 he joined a partnership with his son-in-law Vance Uden until Trueman's death in 1972. He showed cattle at the NE State Fair and the NE Futurity in Columbus almost every year. When Trueman went to the National Western Stock Show in Denver he was not at all familiar with the city; he and his daughter Connie decided to follow a car driven by two men wearing cowboy hats. Luck was with them as the two Continued on page 18 Nebraska Angus News • March/April • 15

Nebraska Angus Queen Spotlight
C
heyann Lovett of Bladen, is the 2011-2012 Nebraska Angus Queen. She lives on a farm near Bladen. Her parents are Jeff and Sandy Lovett, and she has a brother, Dakota and a sister, Montana who are fifteen year old twins. Cheyann attends Blue Hill Community Schools where she is a senior. Her favorite classes are vocational agriculture classes. The courses that focus on agri-business and animal science hold her interest the most. Extra-curricular school and community activities have always played a big part of her life as she has been involved in Softball, Basketball, Journalism, Cheer Leading, FFA, 4-H, Webster County Junior Leaders, Blue Hill Athletics Letterman’s Club, Good News Bears ( her youth church program) and the United Methodist Church Bell Choir. She also serves as secretary of her FFA chapter, and as president of both the Webster County Junior Leaders and the Little Blue Livestock 4H Club. Agriculture plays a very important role in Cheyann's life. Her parents, Jeff and Sandy are originally from Ohio and moved to Nebraska in 1992. Jeff is a cattle buyer for American Food Groups and Sandy is a lab tech at Servi Tech Labs. The Lovett family runs Hidden Valley Angus which is home to about thirty purebred Angus cattle. Cheyann, Dakota and Montana also have a little bit of everything during the summer including sheep, pigs, and 20 • March/April • Nebraska Angus News
goats as their 4-H and FFA projects. Cheyann has taken her interest in Agriculture and passion for the Angus world one step further. She sees her role as Angus Queen as one of an ambassador for the beef industry and it is a perfect opportunity to educate and inform the public on the Angus breed and what the
breed does for the beef industry. It has given her a great chance to interact with other Juniors and adults in the Angus Association. All of these experiences in the Agriculture industry have shaped her future. Cheyann will be attending Southeast Community College (SCC) in Beatrice on a Softball scholarship. She will be majoring in
Agri-Business. Once she has completed her Associates degree at SCC, she will look to transfer to UNL or K-State, and earn a Bachelors degree in Ag Business with a Minor in Political Science. She hopes to one day become a lobbyist for an agriculture organization. Her official Nebraska Queen duties began at the 2011 Nebraska State Fair, where she assisted by handing out awards during the Open Angus show, and she also attended the AkSar-Ben show in Omaha. This spring and summer she will serve as our ambassador at the Nebraska Cattlmen's Classic and the Nebraska Junior Preview show. She also hopes her summer schedule will allow her to participate as Queen at the National Junior Angus Show which will be held in Louisville, KY in July. Cheyann recently served as Co-Chair for the Nebraska Junior Angus Winter Heifer Show this past December. It is a role that was a direct result of serving as our Nebraska Angus Queen. It was a very rewarding experience to organize that show. While no one in Cheyann's family has a direct connection to the Nebraska Angus Queen, her Mother Sandy served as the Eastern Ohio Angus Queen and Miss Ohio Angus Queen. She was also a finalist for Miss America Angus Queen in 1988. When asked if she had any advice for other young women in Nebraska who may be conContinued on next page.....

sidering running for Queen, Cheyann offered this suggestion "Don’t be afraid to try out. It’s intimidating at first but it pays off as a great experience. Just be yourself, be a great representative, and most importantly show great passion for the breed". It is apparent that Cheyann lives this everyday as our 2011-2012 Nebraska Angus Queen.

Our Angus Family Obituaries Martin Donald Connealy Martin Donald Connealy, 78, made his last journey to heaven on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2011. Marty was born May 12, 1933, in Decatur, and as a child moved with the family to Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana before returning to Nebraska. A graduate of Gordon High School in 1952, where he held the shot put record for decades, Marty attended UNL on a football scholarship before returning to the Nebraska Sandhills, where he married Donnie Vinton in 1955. A lifelong Catholic, Marty divided his time as a member of All Saints parish in Hyannis and St. Joseph's in Lincoln where he served on the Newman Center board as well as the Lincoln chapter of Legatus. Starting with a herd of 20 cattle, Marty ultimately developed one of the finest Angus operations in the country. At the annual bull sale, Marty loved greeting his local friends and neighbors and enjoyed widening that circle of friends as he and Donnie delivered bulls all across the nation. Famous for his love of all things Irish and his beloved Cornhuskers, everyone who knew Marty admired his integrity, his passionate love of life and his boundless generosity. A grass-roots member of the Husker Beef Club, Marty remained loyal to the Huskers with his lifelong support of the Nebraska Athletic club. He traveled to Ireland many times with friends and family and could never tell a story about the old country, old friends or his family without tears filling his eyes. Marty treasured his time in the Sandhills driving in his little gray pickup to view baby calves, walking through the bulls, or taking a 22 • March/April • Nebraska Angus News
trip to the fishpond to feed his fish. A medium rare, Connealy Angus dry-aged steak for dinner would close a perfect day. In Lincoln, a perfect day for Marty began with Mass at St. Joseph's, breakfast at the Cornhusker and attendance at a Husker football, basketball or baseball game. He especially delighted in these activities when he was accompanied by his best friend, Donnie, or any of his beloved children, grandchildren, great grandchildren or the multitude of wonderful people he was blessed to call his friends. Marty truly relished sharing his passions with those he dearly loved. Marty is survived by his wife and best friend, Donnie of Whitman; sons, Bill (Renee), of Phoenix, Jerry (Sharon), of Whitman, Jack (Jane), of Lincoln, Mick (Kathy) and Terry (Lisa), all of Omaha; daughters, Susan (Bob) Huffman, of Bassett, and Kathy (Steve) Cleveland, of Chadron; 25 grandchildren proudly called Marty grandfather and eight great-grandchildren carry on the family legacy. An offering of the Holy Rosary was at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mullen on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 28. Visitation was prior to service on Wednesday, Dec. 28. Mass of Christian Burial, also in Mullen, was at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Thursday, Dec. 29, and burial immediately followed at Cedarview Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating Marty's life was held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Saturday, Jan. 7th, 2012. Memorials may be offered to St Thomas Aquinas-Newman Center, 320 North 16th Street, Lincoln, NE 68508.
