The President's Pen Greetings and Happy New Year!
I always look forward to the beginning and end of each year. Usually the end of the year allows us to enjoy the reflections and gratitude for the real reason of the Christmas season, enjoy some family time and start preparations for calving. The new year can bring a sense of hope, resolutions, and for some us new calves! Also, if the weather is good, we can even get a few outside projects done that may have been put off from the summer or fall. (I am sure this never happens to anyone else J)
As I look back on the past year, remember that I asked you to continue looking for opportunities to learn new things to take back to your operations. One of the events I attended this fall was the Angus Convention. Outside of meeting up with old friends, I attended a couple of seminars and will hopefully implement some of the tools from Angus Media to help in our marketing efforts at home. I again ask that you share your experiences with others so they, too, can grow and help their programs remain viable and sustainable. Working together, we can all keep the Angus breed and our own operations moving forward. Once again, never stop learning because life never stops teaching.
As we close out the end of the year and begin 2025, I want to thank you all for the opportunity to serve and represent the Angus breeders of Kansas as your Kansas Angus Association President. I have enjoyed my time in this role and appreciate the dedication of our current board members. As the new officer team comes on board, we will continue to work on finding more opportunities for our members to promote their genetics, operations and the Angus breed. Please reach out to anyone on the board with new ideas or suggestions that you may have.
I pray each of you and your families enjoy a year of faith, good health, prosperity, and great Angus cattle!
Best regards, Lynne Hinrichsen
2024 Kansas Angus Association President 785-770-0014

New Leadership elected to the American Angus Association® Board of Directors
The American Angus Association® 141st Annual Convention of Delegates gathered November 4 in Fort Worth, Texas. Five members were elected to the board of directors. They are Paul Bennett (second term), Red House, Virgina; John Dickinson (second term), Auburn, California; Ron Hinrichsen, Westmoreland, Kansas; Mark Johnson, Orlando, Oklahoma; and Danny Poss, Scotia, Nebraska. The delegation also elected new officers, Jonathan Perry, Fayetteville, Tennessee, president and chairman of the board and Jim Brinkley, Milan, Missouri, vice president and vice chairman of the board. Darrell Stevenson, White Sulphur Springs, Montana will serve as the treasurer for the 2024 to 2025 term.
“We have got to continue to make the American Angus Association relevant to its breeders and its members,” said Jonathan Perry, president and chairman of the American Angus Association® Board of Directors. “We have got to embrace diversity. We have got to continue to create tools that touch every member. The diversity of our breeders and our breed is our greatest strength.”
Directors can serve up to two, three-year terms on the board and, if elected, they serve an additional one-year term in office as president/ chairman and/or vice president/vice chairman.
More about the elected directors:
Paul Bennett, Virginia -Paul Bennett, will serve a second term on the Board of Directors. In his first term, he served on the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) Board of Directors, as Chairman of the Breed Improvement committee, and served on the Member Services committee. Bennett and his wife, Tracy, have two children, Scott and Sarah. In 2024, they were richly blessed with three grandchildren born in a span of three days. The family operation, Knoll Crest Farm, Inc,. is now a fourth-generation seedstock operation, with Bennett’s grandfather, Paul D. Bennett, establishing a registered cow herd in 1944. The family transitioned the farm from a typical southside-Virginia tobacco, livestock and crop farm to a beef seedstock operation in the 1980s. Today, Knoll Crest is operated by the team of brothers - Jim, Brian and Paul - along with Paul’s nephew, Dalton. Bennett is honored to continue sharing his enthusiasm, experience and understanding of the Angus breed and its industry and pledges to remain accessible and highly engaged.
John Dickinson, California-John Dickinson finished his first term on the board as a member of the committees for Member Services, Events and Activities, Breed Improvement; and Commercial Programs. He also served for a time on the Angus Genetics Inc. Board and the Angus Productions, Inc. board. Dickinson and his brother are fifth-generation Angus breeders. His great-great-grandfather, Senator Simon E. Lantz, a former American Angus Association® president, first brought registered Angus cattle to their farm in 1896. Upon graduation from the University of Illinois, Dickinson served as a regional manager for the Association for 10 years. In the spring of 2007, Dickinson left the Association and formed Parnell Dickinson, Inc. (PDI) with his two partners. He works 85 auctions annually. Dickinson also serves as the bull development manager and head of sire procurement for Grimmius Cattle Company. Dickinson is a life member of the Association and has served two terms as president of the California Angus Association (CAA). In 2007, Dickinson was the youngest recipient of the CAA Hall of Fame Award. John and his girl-
friend, Katie Bishop, reside in Caldwell, Idaho, and have two children, Blakely (12) and Silas (3).
Ron Hinrichsen, Kansas- Ron Hinrichsen of Westmoreland, Kansas, has been involved in multiple sectors of the beef cattle industry throughout his professional career and is a third-generation Angus breeder. Ron and his wife, Lynne, established R&L Angus/Hinrichsen Ranch in the Flint Hills of Kansas upon graduating from Kansas State University. While raising high-quality cattle, Ron and Lynne have focused on bringing in the fourth generation their children Cale and Eva to continue the legacy they have established. They raise cattle to fit the environment and sell bulls to commercial cattlemen based on their needs. With another family, they host an annual bull sale in the spring. Angus Herd Improvement Records, ultrasound data, and genomic testing are used to continually improve the predictability of their cattle. Along with the cattle operation, Ron's professional career started in semen sales and later moved into animal health sales. Today he works for Boehringer Ingelheim as a senior territory manager. Ron has played an active role in the Kansas Angus Association, serving on the board and as president and junior advisor. Other leadership roles have included serving as the American Royal beef superintendent for 20 years, as the Kansas State Fair board president, and on the Kansas Livestock Association and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association animal health committees.
Mark Johnson, Oklahoma -Mark Johnson of Orlando, Oklahoma, is a lifelong cattleman with more than 50 years of experience in beef production. Along with his wife, Brenda, and two daughters, Sydney and Charley, he operates J&J Beef Genetics, LLC. Johnson grew up on a centennial family farm in Deerfield, Missouri. He attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M junior college and later Oklahoma State University (OSU). He then completed his doctorate at Kansas State University in 1992. Since then, Johnson has been a professor of animal and food sciences at OSU and has served as supervisor of the OSU Purebred Beef operation for 32 years. At OSU, Johnson has held the Totusek Endowed Chair, been recognized with awards for teaching and advising, conducted youth and beef cattle extension programming and coached the livestock judging team. He is also the lead author of four chapters in the OSU Beef Cattle Manual. Johnson has served as president and vice president of the Oklahoma Angus Association (OAA) and has been honored with the Mr. Angus Award. He and his wife have served as Oklahoma Junior Angus Association Advisors and were inducted into the OAA Hall of Fame in 2024.
Danny Poss, Nebraska -Danny Poss, a first-generation Angus breeder and lifelong resident of Scotia, Nebraska, grew up on a diversified, family farming operation. The early foundation of the family’s commercial cattle operation was established by his parents, Melvin and Elizabeth. In 1985, as a sophomore in high school, Poss purchased his first registered Angus heifer. Poss attended the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) where he majored in animal science. After graduating from college, Poss returned home to the family operation and began growing his Angus cow herd, while working with his parents on their farming operation. That same year, 1993, he sold his first three bulls privately. In 2005, Poss purchased his own ground and continued to help his dad farm. Sadly, in February 2012, Poss lost his dad to brain cancer. In 2017, he and Kristi moved the bull sale to their ranch in Scotia, Nebraska. Today, with the help of their boys, they market more than 300 bulls a year. To Danny and Kristi’s 30 years of marriage, they have four children: Nolan, Nathan, Neleigh and Natalie.

American Angus Association® fiscal year results show continued leadership in beef industry
By Jessica Hartman, Communications Specialist, American Angus Association
The American Angus Association® concluded a successful fiscal year, expanding the breed’s market share. The 2024 fiscal year marked the 10th -consecutive year of more than 300,000 registrations. In addition, the Association surpassed 21-million total registrations. Regular and junior memberships totaled 21,443.
“Despite record low inventory in the beef industry, the Association continues to see strong registration numbers and year-over-year growth,” said Mark McCully, chief executive officer of the Association. “It illustrates The Business Breed’s prominent position in the market; more than 80% of the U.S. cow herd is now Angus-influenced.” This was one of many takeaways garnered from the Industry Insights Survey, which was released in the first quarter and conducted by Angus MediaSM and CattleFax.
The breed also celebrated a historic industry milestone with the announcement from National Beef Packing Co., LLC (NPB) to pay grid premiums for genetic merit. As of August 5, NPB pays a $5 per head premium for cattle on their U.S. Premium Beef, LLC grid with an AngusLinkSM Genetic Merit Scorecard (GMS) Beef Score of 100 or greater. Beginning December 1, cattle with a Beef Score of at least 150 will receive a $10 premium. This is in addition to the nearly $17/cwt. average premium paid on feeder cattle enrolled in AngusLink value-added programs during the past year, even as annual enrollments grew by 76%.
AngusLink is one of many programs and tools the Association and its subsidiaries continue to expand to better support Angus breeders and drive demand for their products. During the fiscal year, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI®) processed 218,497 genomic samples a 5.6% increase from the year prior. In partnership with the Association’s Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®), AGI® also released research expected progeny differences (rEPDs) for both teat size and udder suspension. More than 148,000 phenotypic records for each trait were collected from 87,000 cows to contribute to the dataset for the rEPDs.
Angus MediaSM welcomed Benjie Lemon as its new president in June 2024. His team ended the year having created 573 custom sale books and sold 3,170 advertising pages. The Angus Journal® produced more than 3,500 pages of breeder news and articles, while the Angus Beef Bulletin® provided commercial readers with 960 pages of industry news and insights.
In a joint effort to better serve readers, members and commercial producers, Angus Media and the Association launched a new, redesigned website. The retooled homepage of Angus.org allows visitors a choice of three actions; to learn about Angus advantages, go to the commercial cattlemen’s corner, or visit the member center. Each section has resources, news and links specifically curated for different types of Angus producers.
Angus Foundation continues to expand its reach and support of youth, education and research; having awarded more than $388,000 in scholarship dollars and raising nearly $800,000 in donations in the fiscal year. Under the Foundation’s guidance and with additional funds from Ingram Angus and the Association, BEEF Academy launched in July 2024. The new youth-focused, online learning platform is a go-to-resource for beef industry education for National Junior Angus Association members. In the future, the platform will be available to schools and other organizations to utilize.
Driving growing demand for Angus genetics, Certified Angus Beef sold 1.236 billion pounds of branded beef with 18,000 licensed partners worldwide. Engaging producers across the industry, Certified Angus Beef con-
cluded the first year of its Raised with RespectTM campaign having facilitated the Beef Quality Assurance certification of more than 1,500 ranchers.
“Today’s consumers have greater interest in how their beef is raised and the practices behind it,” said John Stika, president of Certified Angus Beef. “Programs like BQA help bring our customers and beef community closer together in that understanding, building trust to ensure a sustainable future for our industry.” The program which is funded in partnership by Sysco has been greenlighted for another year.

I was honored to serve as the 2024 Miss Kansas Angus it was an unforgettable experience
This year, I attended many production sales in Kansas, read stories to elementary students, helped with story hour, but my favorite part was talking to Angus breeders about their passion for the breed. I also got to meet royalty from across the country and made friendships that that will last a lifetime.
I would like to thank my parents, friends, family, Kansas Angus breeders the Auxiliary, the Kansas Angus Association, the KJAA and program chairman Anne Lampe for making my year as Miss Kansas Angus possible and a wonderful experience.
The Miss Kansas Angus an ambassador program is great for someone passion about Angus breed. I encourage all young women to give it a try. It is an experience that you will never forget.
Thank you to all that helped me to get where I am today, I encourage. I enjoyed my year serving as your 2024 Miss Kansas Angus, it was truly an honor.
