It is a great time to be in the cattle industry! With exceptional prices and demand for both beef and feeder calves, there has been no better time to improve the genetics of your cow herd. The return on investment for quality genetics has never been so good. EPDs can be used as a tool to compare the expected performance of two bulls. For example, bull A has a carcass weight EPD of 10 while bull B has a carcass weight EPD of 30. This would lead to calf carcass weights that are 20 lbs. heavier for the offspring of the bull B, the better bull.
As I write this on February 12, 2024, USDA price for a choice carcass is on average $279.00 per hundred weight. Improving that carcass weight by 20lbs. is worth $55.80 per head. If that bull could sire 20 head of calves, that bull would produce $1116.00 dollars of extra carcass value per year. If you go one step farther and are able to select a bull that also increases marbling, you would be able to capture more premiums for prime and decrease the number of grading discounts accumulated at the packing plant. The supply of feeder cattle looks to be tighter for at least the next two years and so it would not surprise us to add value again year after year. A repeat bull customer shared with me that the last few loads of fats sold were running over 50% prime. You do the math, better bulls pay and no time has ever rewarded you better. Cull bull prices are at or above $1 per pound, now is the time to upgrade the bull pen.
Call me if you have questions about EPDs or bulls. I would be glad to help anyone understand the information that is available on these bulls and improve the profitability of your cattle.

FERTILITY/DISPOSITION GUARANTEE: We guarantee the fertility and disposition of every bull selling. All bulls sell with a breeding soundness exam (BSE) certificate. Each Bull is guaranteed to be a satisfactory breeder; assuming the buyer provides acceptable nutrition, health and management.
• If a bull proves to be a non-breeder, the buyer must contact the Seller on or before Oct. 31, 2024, to make a claim.
• RedFest reserves the right to request a statement from a veterinarian and/or the bull being returned to RedFest at the buyer’s expense.
• If proper claim is made, the buyer will be given full credit if the bull is returned, OR full credit minus salvage value if the bull was sold with the credit to be used in a future RedFest sale.
RedFest retains a 1/2 semen interest in all bulls selling. We are selling 100% possession and 100% salvage or resale value. This gives RedFest the option to collect, use and market semen from the bull and does not restrict the buyer from doing the same.
