Sale Procedure and Locations
Cattle Viewing: Chimney Butte Ranch, Mandan, ND
Sale Location: St Anthony Verien Hall, St Anthony, North Dakota. All cattle will be penned and viewed at Chimney Butte Ranch, Mandan, North Dakota. Cattle will be available for viewing Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28, 2023. Auction will be held via video at St Anthony Verien Hall with video of each respective animal displayed on large screens as animals are auctioned.
Bull Developement and Guarantee
Our bulls were fed the same ration as previous years, Until Feb 1, when we made the tough decision to cancel our spring sale. We put the bulls on a higher roughage ration with a planned growing ration of 1 to 1.5 lbs gain per day. When winter finally left us the ration changed to chopped hay and some corn. When summer came, the ration was long hay and limited grazing. To add condition for the sale, about Sept 1, we put Purina Accuration in the bull pen with the long hay. Free choice mineral and salt has always been available. We feel we have grown the bulls and not pushed them to their true potential. I believe these bulls have been developed for longevity, and will adapt quickly to new feeding or pasture programs. If you would like more details of the feeding program, please call and we can discuss. All bulls are guaranteed breeders under terms and conditions recommended by the AGA.

Mother Nature certainly gave us some challenges last winter. Record snowfall in early November, followed by severe cold and several storms, forced us to make many changes in our operation. Feeding the animals to keep them warm and healthy was a challenge. Our working facilities and working corrals were constantly snowed in. Our days were long, our fuel bill was high, but the cattle made it thru in good shape.
Quite honestly, our spring sale was cancelled because we were just overworked and could not properly prepare for the sale. We had discussed combining the bull sale with our fall heifer sale many times. Mother Nature made the decision for us. The bulls have been culled heavily, and are ready for work. In the past I have been more than satisfied with the older bulls we have purchased. I am very pleased with the quality and condition of these bulls.
As in the past, every heifer that bred A-I is offered in this sale. We also added every older cow that settled A-I to this sale. The females we are offering represent over 30 years of maternal focused breeding. No A-I bred females have been held back. Ultrasound technology was used for breeding date confirmation and fetal sex determination. We have culled for various reasons and we reserve the right to cull until the sale.
We also changed the physical sale location to provide a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. The animals are available for viewing at the ranch, with the sale only 15 miles away. Come visit the ranch, view the animals, have a cup of coffee, visit with us before the sale. Immediately after the sale, we will be providing a supper for our guests. The meal will be catered by Rusty’s Bar and Grill. What has not changed is our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. We have sold animals from Canada to Mexico, and Washington State to Georgia. Our animals have performed well in many different environments and management systems. We have worked hard to create a reputation for honest hard working animals that will adapt to most environments. All cattle sell with a valid health certificate that will allow shipment anywhere in the continental United States.

Registration Papers
All registrations on the animals selling are in order and will be transferred to the new owner. Registrations will be processed by the AGA and should be to the new owner in 45-60 days.

The spring of 2022, when theses heifers were born, was extremely difficult. Our area experienced 3 storms in 3 weeks giving us in excess of 36 inches of snow and 2 inches of rain, followed by record cold temperatures. We feel fortunate to have had minimum losses during the storms and resulting wet and muddy conditions for several weeks after the storms. Some of our cows were wintered and calved at a cooperator breeder. Like us, not all processes were completed to our expectations. Some of the calves did not get identified to dams, and many birth weights were estimates, not scale weights. DNA samples and paperwork for registration, was sent to the AGA in March 2023, somehow the material was not processed. In September 2023 the AGA acknowledged their error and DNA processing was started. At catalogue time, parentage, on some animals, is still not available. As parentage is determined by DNA, we will post on our websites. We will also provide available information at sale day on a supplement sheet. Rest assured, these are all sired by AGA registered sires whose progeny have been sold or retained in our herd from previous years. These are top shelf animals that will make great mama cows, purebred or commercial. The following heifers do not have parentage identified as the catalogue goes to print. These animals have been sorted based on individual merit with no bias for genetic history. These calves, born in very tough conditions, with limited shelter, show the true ability and endurance of animals in our breeding program. The animals without pedigree information are offered as commercial bred heifers. Their calves can be registered as 50% GV, or higher. If pedigree and DNA information is not available sale day it will be provided to the buyer when, and if the AGA completes testing.
