Editor’s Message & Association Schedules I may be a little biased, but I think we have some of the best cattle and the best people in the nation in the Dakota’s, as evidenced by this issue! First of all, the quality of cattle in both the Erika Kenner North Dakota Editor and South Dakota State sales looks better than ever. Eberspacher’s have worked hard to put together a tremendous set in South Dakota and Jeff Thomas has more consignments than ever before and many are new consignors in North Dakota. Secondly, both state associations worked together to accommodate schedule conflicts and were able to compromise. So please take note of the new sale dates this year. They should stay this way for a long time now. South Dakota Simmental Association has moved to the 3rd weekend of December, which used to be the North Dakota State Sale. The North Dakota Simmental Association has collaborated with the North Dakota Red Angus Association to share the 2nd weekend of December. Which brings me to my final point, the people in the Dakota’s are there to help each other. It truly is a family and is one of the reasons the State Association sales are so successful. By being supportive of each other, it creates a positive atmosphere, which is appreciated by buyers as well! I want to commend all the breeders and consignors for being so encouraging and supportive of one another. Let’s keep moving forward in the cattle business as leaders! I wish everyone a happy holiday season and look forward to visiting at the events in December! Sincerely,
Erika 2 | SD SimmenTeller & ND Simmental Scene

Members in the News BICHLER ATTENDS NEW LEADERSHIP PROGRAM WITH THE KING RANCH® INSTITUTE FOR RANCH MANAGEMENT During the 2014 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) convention and trade show, North Dakota Simmental Association member, Doug Bichler, Linton, ND, participated in a new leadership program offered by the King Ranch® Institute for Ranch Management (KRIRM). The Excellence in Ag Leadership Program is a two-year course that will further develop the next generation of leaders in the ranching industry. Bichler, along with 17 other participants were selected and identified as high potential leaders with assistance from NCBA. They will complete the unique, distanceeducation program, which is designed to help them identify, understand, and capitalize on their unique strengths to develop personal, organizational, and community leadership skills.
To do so, Bichler and other participants will attend KRIRM lectureships in Kingsville, Texas, on the topics of Systems Thinking, Human Resources Management, and Strategic Planning. These lectureships utilize top experts in the ranching industry, ultimately allowing for the participants to become greater leaders to make a positive impact on the industry. They will also participate in webinars with industry leaders and attend individual leadership development training. The program began at NCBA with a one-day leadership workshop where participants received the results of their personal 360-leadership assessment completed by their managers, co-workers, peers, and direct reports. The assessment identified the unique leadership strengths of each participant. The leadership of KRIRM and NCBA expressed great optimism for the program and potential impact these 18 individuals will have as they lead the ranching industry in the future.
Doug Bichler KRIRM, founded in 2003 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of King Ranch, is the only master’s program in the world that offers a Master of Science in Ranch Management. The vision of the program is to educate leaders who will make a positive difference in ranching, and ensure that the ranching heritage is not lost. KRIRM also provides the highest quality lectureships and symposia to stakeholders in the ranching industry. To learn more about KRIRM visit http://krirm.tamuk.edu.

ND Junior Update Junior Update North Dakota Junior News By: NDJSA President, Patrick Schumacher, Linton, ND
Hello families and North Dakota Junior Simmental members! It Patrick Shumacher is an exciting time to be in the cattle business! It is also exciting for me to share the status of our Junior Simmental Association as we look into the future of the organization and watch it grow! We have an increasing number of participants in our junior association and that is great to see! We currently have 40 members. We had a very eventful summer and a great time at the State Fair. The futurity show was represented by another great set of heifers. Congratulations to all the participants in this summer’s show! This year’s state sale will be offering another
fantastic group of heifers so I encourage everyone to come to the sale, which is December 13. Not only are you able to add top quality genetics to your herd, but any open heifer bought at the sale is eligible to be shown in the futurity show which takes place at the state fair. We have up to $2,000 in cash prizes for the winners! So that being said, make sure to come to the sale and find a heifer that will work in your program! The ND Simmental Association banquet will be held on Friday, December 12, the night before the sale. We will be holding another auction to raise funds for the junior association. Donated items will be auctioned off during the banquet and proceeds will go towards the ND Junior Association. Finally, I would like to thank the parents and everyone who donated time, effort & money to the association! We would not be where we are today without the generous help an support of many! I hope to see many of you soon and good luck in the coming months!
