Connection

Nutritionist – Agronomist – Dairyman

On my way home from the eventful Swissconsin Brown Swiss Convention, I reached out to my confidant, Robert Barber, Irish Hill Farm in Iowa. I wanted to give him the play by play on the inspiring meeting and great National Sale. Somewhere south of Oshkosh, we started down the genomic trail. I told him about the questions brought up during the annual meeting about what the board and the Association can do to get more testing done. Robert informed me about his grandson showing his genomic-tested registered Angus heifer at the National Junior Angus Show recently in Madison, WI. Soon the question came-up, why don’t more breeders do genomic testing to find out what they have and to make breeding and management decisions based on the results? That’s where Robert presented this example: Don’t dairymen have a nutritionist? And what does the nutritionist do? Test your feed. Why? To find out the quality of the feed to make adjustments to the ration. I told Robert that’s a great comparison, can I use that? Permission granted.

BSCBA Mission Statement

To promote and expand the Brown Swiss breed with programs that assist the membership and industry to compete favorably in the market place now and in the future.

Well, I called my crop report expert in central Minnesota, Lyndon Gerdts, Little Cobb Farm, to get and give the current news, (only one inch of rain last week in Waldorf, inch and a half this week so far). I told Lyndon about Robert’s Nutrition-Genomic comparison, and we went down the Agronomist path. I asked if he applied fertilizer at different rates in certain parts of each field? He said no. Due to the high level of organic fertilizer (manure) applied, he only uses the minimum amount of fertilizer. And how does he know how much that minimum should be? His agronomist tests the soil. See a pattern?

Genomics are a tool available to be used along with production testing and type classification to manage your dairy. By your use of genomic testing, you are not only helping manage your herd; you are also increasing the genomic reliability level for the entire breed. It is said, “If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.”

SWISSCONSIN SUCCESS

The National Brown Swiss Convention, themed “Celebrate Swissconsin” by the host Wisconsin Brown Swiss Association, was held July 3-6, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency, Green Bay, Wisconsin. Starting the convention Day 1 on July 3rd, the 200-plus registered conventioneers were treated to a welcome dinner at the Stadium View Bar and Grill sponsored by New Generation Genetics.

DAY 2, JULY 4TH

started after breakfast with the Annual Meeting. The President’s message, the Executive Secretary’s Report, committee reports, and old business were presented, while new business discussion provided input from association members. Election results were given for the President and Board of Directors. Lunch followed with the National Award presentations. (See the Annual Meeting - pgs 6-7 and the National and BSHS Awards articles -pgs 8-18)

Following the awards luncheon, the STgenetics-sponsored National Junior Brown Swiss Heifer Show was held at the Brown County Fairgrounds, De Pere, Wisconsin, with Judge Ryan Krohlow from Poynette, Wisconsin, presiding. The day ended with a dinner at the fairgrounds sponsored by Vita Plus, followed by the Youth Fun Auction and fireworks viewing. (See the National Junior Heifer Show Report - pgs 20-21)

DAY 3, JULY 5TH

started with a grab-and-go breakfast and attendees boarding buses for the farm tours. The first stop was Meadow Brook Dairy Farms LLC, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, owned and operated by Mitch and McKenzie Kappelman and Mitch’s parents, Pete and Shellie Kappelman. A fifth-generation dairy farm, Meadow Brook milks 380 Registered Holsteins and 40 Registered Brown Swiss cows. The Brown Swiss herd average is 27,389 lbs. of milk, 4.27% 1169 lbs. of fat, and 3.29% 901 lbs. of protein. Mitch received the 2020 National Distinguished Young Brown Swiss Breeder Award. Meadow Brook has sent 16 bulls to A.I., including the former #1 PPR bull SEGA and former #1 NM$ bull STANDOUT. Meadow Brook also places an emphasis on breeding polled cattle. Currently, the herd has 27 polled Brown Swiss females.

The next stop was Jenlar Holsteins and Brown Swiss in Chilton, Wisconsin, owned and operated by Larry and Jennifer Meyer along with their three children. They milk 130 cows with 70% of the herd Holsteins and 30% Brown Swiss. All cows, including show cows, are milked with two Lely robotic milkers. Because of the use of sexed semen and IVF technology, their heifer pens have a much higher ratio of Brown Swiss. Jenlar has bred or exhibited 29 All-American Nominations since 2015 with all but one animal being homebred. They have exhibited 11 Brown Swiss class winners in the open and junior shows at World Dairy Expo during that same time period. The Meyer’s have been recognized with the National Ira Inman Type & Production Award multiple times. The herd at Jenlar is entirely homebred with the exception of one animal. Tour attendees had the opportunity to view Brown Swiss legend Jenlar Dynasty Treat 5E91, just awarded the Highest Living Lifetime Energy Corrected Milk (ECM) Award for the third consecutive year. Treat ranks as the second highest-producing milk and protein cow all-time. Also on display was Jenlar Carter Waltz ETV E91/92MS, Intermediate Champion International Brown Swiss Show and Grand Champion International Junior Brown Swiss Show at World Dairy Expo 2019.

The final stop on the tour was ST Genetics, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, a bull-collection facility. The Fond Du Lac location currently houses 450 head of bulls and jumper steers, which includes 4 Brown Swiss bulls that were on display in the collection barn. All bulls are EU Qualified and housed individually. After touring the collection facility, attendees were given a tour of the distribution center and processing lab, no photos are allowed in these facilities. ST Genetics, Fond Du Lac, sells over five million units of semen each year, with fifty percent of the semen sexed and fifty percent conventional semen. Semen is shipped all over the world. The Final Banquet and youth awards were held that evening.

DAY 4, JULY 6TH

was the last day of the convention and concluded with the Swissconsin National Convention Sale held at the Brown County Fairgrounds, De Pere, Wisconsin, managed by Brown Swiss Enterprises. (See the National Sale Report - pg 19)

Annual Meeting 2024

President Tom Portner called the 144th Annual Meeting of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders’ Association of the USA (BSCBA) to order on Thursday, July 4th, 2024, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Executive Secretary Norm Magnussen gave the notice of the annual meeting. President Portner then called for a moment of silence for those deceased breeders and friends over the past year. Lee Barber, Chair of the Tally Committee, gave the report: as of April 30, 2024, BSCBA had 693 members with a quorum requirement of 69. There were 149 members present in person or by proxy giving a quorum. A motion was made by Erich Hodges to approve the minutes from 2023, with a second by Heather Yoder. Motion passed.

Barb Lee asked if there was a comparison for the previous year’s financials to this last year. One can be provided at request. Lee Barber moved to approve the financials. Erich Hodges 2nd. Motion passed.

President’s Message

President Portner welcomed everyone to the 144th annual meeting here in Green Bay, WI. He thanked the Wisconsin association for hosting this year’s convention and putting so many great events together. President Portner thanked Hoard’s Dairyman and Dairy Agenda Today for coming and covering our convention. Portner thanked the Executive Secretary and staff for all the hard work they are doing in the office. Portner also thanked Kaylen Miller for her work with the youth of the past year. Portner thanked the board of directors for their dedication to meet monthly as a group. Portner addressed the draft of the audit from 2022 and informed the membership that the audit did not report any findings of concern. Going into 2025, the membership can expect to see some increases in fees due to inflation. In May, the Association did have a database shut down that was not expected and do appreciate everyone’s understanding as the staff works to get caught up. Portner touched on the option for paperless registrations and encouraged members to contact the office if interested in this option. Portner stated the location of the 2025 convention and did express concern with no one is lined up to host the 2026 convention. If we do not get an organization to help host, we will not be able to have a convention in 2026.

Executive Secretary Report

Secretary Norm Magnussen welcomed everyone and thanked the staff for the dedication to the Association. Magnussen provide some information on the delay of work due to the database shut down in May. Magnussen mentioned that with the base change in April 2025, we will be looking at formulas for the association. We are monitoring several entities to see what they are doing to help with the discussion around changes to our PPR formula. Magnussen mentioned the updates that have been done to the office which included a new roof and boiler to keep the office running. The Association was able to do these updates without having to take out loans. Magnussen expressed the concern about Registered animals going through a sale but not being transferred. “The $25 you think you are saving is costing the Brown Swiss Association $25.” [And the unregistered offspring out of the untransferred animals represent additional lost revenue for the Association.] This will have an impact on the Association’s financial stability if operating without the support of its membership.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Genetics Committee

Brian Lammers reported on the new changes to registering ET calves. At the board meeting that happened this week, the decision was made to offer an option to the membership to simplify the process for registering ET animals that the office will communicate in the future. Lammers mentioned the new trait coming with the August 2024 evaluations and the new base change in April 2025. Every 5 years, CDCB adjusts the genetic bases to keep the values relevant with the data that is collected. The committee will be reviewing the UDC formula after the August evaluation to include the new trait to keep animals from getting short teats.

Type Committee

Laurie Winkelman gave information on the teat length that was provided

to the type committee for 2-year-old cows. Winkelman stated that the average was 3.81 which does reflect that we have short teats. With working with the genetics committee, she hopes that we can address this issue with adjustments to the UDC formula. The other linear trait that we are changing is the Stature trait. The large portion of the cows we scored last year were 2-year-old cows, or 1st lactation cows. Winkelman did provide some information on the scale currently used and how the points are given at the time of classification. From the data, we are noticing that we have bigger cows. The board of directors did decide to make a change to the Stature scale up 2 inches for each point to better capture the size of our cows. The change will happen as soon as all the updates have been implemented and expressed to the classifiers. Winkelman also mentioned the changes to the Top 20 list for the cows and heifers. The board of directors made the decision to no longer pull the Top 20 lists for cows and heifers based on PPR; if the cow is the highest for PTAT, the cow will be listed at the top of the list regardless of the cow’s PPR. Winkelman did provide visuals of the website and where to find the lists and provided examples of the current list for PTAT. The hope is that we can make it better to use PTAT and UDC for marketing. Winkelman did address the question about possibly needing to have Holstein to classify our cows. The board has discussed it at length, and the BS classification program is breaking even at this time. The board does not intend to make any changes without thorough discussion.

Show Committee

Brian Pacheco reported that the committee met twice since the last annual meeting and we have had a full year with our new judges’ application process. One new change coming with the judges’ application is that the applications are now due October 15th. We did have to revote on the judges for the 2024 Louisville show due to conflicts for the previous judges listed. Pacheco discussed looking further at the show rules with the committee at a future meeting in regards to the Bred & Owned award.

Youth Committee

Dayne Voelker reported on the change with the Bell Ringer program. What was discussed was to allow for more participation with adding an additional placing to qualify for the National Bell Ringer Contest. What this means is that you now can list the top 3 placings at a youth show on the entry form.

Old Business

No old business.

New Business

Josh Hushon thanked Tom for notifying the membership that we do not have any host state for the 2026 convention. Hushon expressed concern with the decrease in breeders at the state levels. President Portner has discussed it, but we are not able to do what Holstein does because of the lack of staff to pull off the event. At this point, if we don’t have a host, there will only be an annual meeting each year that would take place in Beloit, WI, for years to come. The board does recognize the challenge going forward. Brian Lammers stated that the Bylaws state that we have to have an annual meeting so that will take place, but the challenge is about having activities to surround that business meeting. Lammers listed several challenges for hosts when putting conventions together. Hushon encouraged the board to come up with other options for hosting the convention. Heather Yoder made a suggestion of the state and office staff hosting it together or having an annual committee board to put the conventions together.

Brett Haines asked about the base change and stated that we are making improvement. Haines asked if the board has discussed any changes to help increase the use of genomic testing to continue to increase the reliability of our genomics. President Portner stated that the board has discussed it. Laurie Winkelman did provide more information about the new embryo procedure that would require all ET calves to be tested in order to not register the flush that the calves have resulted from.

Tammy Voegeli asked if the option of having all calves to be tested could eliminate issues with AI breeding as well as embryo implantation. Could

we talk to the labs to see if we can get a discount somehow to allow for this option to better the parentage issues. Portner did address the concern presented but there is also concern that the biggest part of our association is registrations so putting the requirement all calves to be genomic tested into effect could reflect negatively on total registrations. Kylie Chittenden asked about getting a discount on genomic testing for those on BSA. Laurie Winkelman stated that it has not been discussed and that we can look into giving a break to BSA members. Scott Schugel stated that you could shop around to get the best deal on testing, but felt that if we did all the testing through one lab wouldn’t that warrant a lesser fee? Norm Magnussen did provide information about what is happening in other places like Switzerland. He feels that genomic testing is a great tool to utilize, and we can work on looking at ways to incentivize genomic testing.

Brian Lammers stated that there are many breeders who do not feel that it would benefit their operation. He felt that we could do more surveys to get a feel for what the membership is wanting to do and use that to determine a course of action on getting more testing done. Richard Hill stated that he feels that it’s a great idea, but we can’t let this take from the number of registrations that help to keep the association going. President Portner provided background on his personal experience as a more commercial breeder who genomic tests all of the animals on his farm. He has been able to sell several animals with high genomic information privately that has helped to pay for the genetic testing that he is doing on his herd of cows.

Scott Schugel asked if we were doing Top 20 lists without sorting for all traits. Laurie Winkelman stated that all of the traits will no longer have a cut off of a certain level of PPR. The lists will only include genomic-tested cows. Schugel asked if the bull lists will have a similar change. Winkelman stated that the Top 20 bull lists will remain the same because the board feels that the bulls have a very large impact on the breed. Norman C. Magnussen did state that the Top PPR Cow and Heifer lists will now also list the UDC values.

Jennifer Meyer asked if bulls that are not producing semen or whose semen is no longer available should not be listed but are. Brett Haines stated that it should be addressed with NAAB so that those bulls do not show up. Brian Lammers addressed the NAAB coding with bulls that are not always active. With bulls that are gone but had a lot of semen collected, the studs are keeping them active because there is still semen available.

Barb Lee asked about the A2 Beta casein and Kappa casein results and why they are still not on the pedigrees. Portner stated that the database is set up but one of the labs does not include the added testing unless you pay additional fees. Allicia Horn discussed what is happening currently with the work with CDCB and NAAB to get the information to flow.

Mariah Klug asked how the board will continue to promote Brown Swiss since we are not just the only breed with components. Norman C. Magnussen stated the current rankings for the breeds for milk, fat, and protein. Magnussen stated that the Brown Swiss cow still offers something to the modern dairy. Matt Hendel did state the Brown Swiss International is publishing a magazine in July and it’s important to express the ability of the Brown Swiss to be heat tolerant. Brian Lammers mentioned that we have not done any research in the last several years and that it might be time to do research on various things that could be used for marketing. Tammy Voegeli asked if there is any promotion done on the Brown Swiss being milked with robots? Norman C. Magnussen feels that with the new evaluated trait in rear teat placement that this will help with being able to promote the work in robots.

Jennifer Meyer asked when the Brown Swiss Association will allow for transfers to be done electronically like Holstein. Norman C. Magnussen stated that it has been discussed and there are challenges with programming. The integrity of the breed is important, and we are trying to reduce the issue that can arise from electronic transfers. Brian Lammers stated that one challenge is our antiquated database which is very limited to do several of the things that other association are able to do. The board has discussed making a change to the database that we operate from but it would cost more money to the Association.

Larry Bjork asked why it has been so difficult to identify the cows that are polled. Why can’t we catch up with Holsteins in terms of getting a list of polled animals? Brian Lammers did state that it was discussed to have a polled list but it has not been put into action on the board level.

Heather Yoder had a suggestion that we add board members from large districts to get more contributions from the membership. Yoder stated that some of the younger members do not feel included in the dealings of the Association. Dayne Voelker feels that it is a good point, he was added to the board in his early 20’s and that we need candidates who are involved and have a passion for the breed to run for the board. Brian Lammers does feel that we need younger individuals at the committee level who then could grow into possible board members in the future.

Kylie Chittenden stated that the membership does not know how to get on the committees. President Portner mentioned that they could contact the President and the Executive Secretary to express interest in participating in committees before they discuss the adding of members to committees. Tammy Voegeli stated that it would be nice to be asked to be on a committee, but if we need to contact someone who should we talk to? When should we submit the request? President Portner stated that your interest in serving on a committee should be discussed with the President or Executive Secretary by August 1st each year. Portner stated that past board members are also encouraged to participate on committees.

Barb Lee asked if board meetings were open to the membership to attend? Norman C. Magnussen stated that the board consists of representatives that are elected to represent the districts. Laurie Winkelman feels that the board could do a better job of communicating with the membership so that the member is represented properly. President Portner does not know the exact wording in the bylaws but he does know they were made prior to when virtual meetings began occurring. The bylaws will be reviewed.

ELECTION OF DIRECTORS

Brian Pacheco, CA, was elected as the President. Sherry Smith, OH, was elected as the District III Director. Brent Moyer, MI, was elected as District IV Director. Dayne Voelker, MO, was re-elected as the Director of District VI.

IRA INMAN PTPR TROPHIES

NOR-BERT FARM, BREMEN, IN, is the recipient of the Ira Inman PTPR Trophy for Group 1 (10-29 cows). Beginning in 1945 with Norman and Bertha Krathwohl, the family farm located in northern Indiana started with milking six Holstein cows. The farm is still going strong as the family now includes four generations with Roger & Deb Dankert, Jeremy Dankert, and Monty & Jennifer Freeman along with their three children, Dalton, Dillon, and Breanne.

In total there are 55 365d 3x Honor Roll records for milk, fat, or protein produced by Nor-Bert Farm Brown Swiss. They have about 140 cows milking with 29 of them Brown Swiss. The rolling herd average for the Brown Swiss is: 28,741m, 5.7% 1,540f 4% 1,149p.

Several cow families are represented in the herd. One is Nor-Bert Thunder Silverflake Ex92 who has a granddaughter Nor-Bert DStar Silver Missile VG85 that they are working with. Another is the NorBert Silver Jem VG86 family. Jem’s son Nor-Bert Jim Beam is at New Generation Genetics. She also has a VG87 O’Malley daughter that they are working with. Another is the Jonlee Secret Langwathby family whose daughter Nor-Bert Carter Lexus ET is Ex92 and has several daughters. Current bulls being used are Jim Beam, Prince, Top Notch, and Ray.

Twelve years ago, the family added three robots to the farm and they haven’t looked back! The cows are milked around the clock, some milking three or more times per day. “There is an increase in production from the robots,” admits Jeremy. “They’ve been really useful as I don’t have to worry about cows being milked.” They run 1000 acres, of which 800 are owned.

FAIRDALE FARM LLC, OWENTON, KY, is the recipient of the Ira Inman PTPR Trophy for Group 2 (30-49 cows). Fairdale Farm, LLC is a partnership of Richard and Renelle Sparrow and their three sons, Joe, Ben, and Kirby and their families (Angela, Archie, Wylie, Callie, Hallie, Lillian, Annie.) Richard bought his first registered Brown Swiss calf in 1962 and began exhibiting then. All three boys owned and showed Brown Swiss nationwide throughout their youth. The present dairy operation was built in 2012 with a compost-bedded

pack barn and double-four parlor. Currently, the rolling herd average is 31,273m 1,286f 1,105p on 47 cows. The farming operation consists of 1,000 acres owned and leased. Corn silage, small grain bailage, and alfalfa are the main crops. Background steers utilize the summer pasture. Fairdale has an extensive IVF - ET program, flushing 18 cows and heifers in 2023.

Fairdale has exhibited and or bred 58 animals Nominated All American and continues to show cattle nationwide. The third generation of Sparrow showmen has started with Archie showing his spring calf at the 2022 Southwest National and placing second.

Fairdale manages the Kentucky National Brown Swiss Show and Sale each year. In 2024, 63 lots averaged $3451, and went to eighteen states.

COZY NOOK FARM OF WAUKESHA, WI, is the recipient of two National Awards for their Brown Swiss dairy herd. Operated by Tom and Joan Oberhaus, herdsman Dan Gerrits and his wife Brittany Renn Gerrits, and assisted by son Charlie Oberhaus and fiancée Amie Simac, they have been milking cows full-time since 1985.They have approximately 66 milking Brown Swiss, 65 up-and-coming Brown Swiss heifers, and a handful of Guernseys on the farm. The Brown Swiss currently average on 66 cows 29,169M 4.3% 1,243F 3.5% 1029P.

Cozy Nook Farm received the Ira Inman PTPR Trophy Group 3, milking (50-99 cows), which is based on a total progressive dairy program including breeding, feeding, and management. Winners are determined by assigning point values to protein, butterfat, milk, classification, percentage records received, and number of years on DHIR official test.

Cozy Nook Farm was also awarded the Protein Genetic Herd Award Group 3. (50-99 cows), This award is presented to the herd with the top genetic level in the past year based on Actual PTA protein of all cows with the same herd code calving within the past two years. Since 2014, Cozy Nook Farms has won the Ira Inman PTPR Trophy six times, the Protein Genetic Herd Award nine times, and the Progressive Genetic Herd Award four times. According to Tom, he realized in the early 1980s that protein production is very important to maintaining a profitable farm. He also knew that Brown Swiss cattle are the best at producing high amounts of protein, which was his main reason for owning and breeding Brown Swiss cattle. Tom’s advice to others is to “have a goal and keep striving for it.” While he focuses on genetics, he says he (Cont.)

always remembers his main goal, which is to breed for longevity. Cozy Nook is located in a very urban area which gives them lots of opportunities to share their dairy story. They raise 20 acres of pumpkins, Indian Corn, gourds and squash for their roadside fall market. Fall is also a popular time for school field trips; about 1200 children enjoy an educational farm tour and hayride to the pumpkin patch. They also sell 1800 Christmas trees, wreaths, and garlands after Thanksgiving.

HILLTOP ACRES, CALMAR, IA, were the 2023 Ira Inman PTPR Trophy for Group 4 (100 + cows). Today, Hilltop Acres Farm consists of 470 acres owned and another 330 rented, raising all corn and alfalfa. Currently, there are 400 Registered Brown Swiss cows and close to 400 of young stock on the farm. In 1997, Dennis & Barb built a 120cow free stall barn/parlor setup. Prior to that, the cows were milked in a 68-tie stall barn. In 2014, another free stall barn with 240 stalls along with a new special needs barn/calving barn that can hold 30 head were added. Also in 2014, the parlor was remodeled to a double-12 parallel with a new milk house and break room. The cows are milked 3x a day. They raise all of their own heifers and bulls. Most of the livestock is fed a TMR ration except the young calves. Heifers 6 months on up are housed in a Virginia-style heifer barn. All calves six months and under are housed in a 68 X 152 calf barn, where calves 3 months and under are fed with a DeLaval automatic calf feeder. In the summer of 2015, the calf barn was added onto and a second Delaval Automatic calf feeder was added. Bulls six months and over are housed in a pole shed open to the south, that was remodeled in 2015.

To date, there have been over 200 Hilltop Acres bulls that have been proven. Of the top 10 Living Lifetime cows for 2022, five called the Mashek’s Hilltop Acres home. Those 5 cows have a combined actual total of 1,444,938m lifetime to-date.

The current 6/19/23 RHA is 30,069m 4.6 1,392f 3.5 1,059p. Hilltop Acres “team” consists of 4 full-time employees, 2 part-time, along with Dennis, Barb and sons Josh & Tanner.

PROGRESSIVE GENETIC HERD AWARDS

2023 Progressive Genetics Herd Award Group 1 (10-29 cows) and 2023 Protein Genetic Herd Award Group 1 (10-29 cows) TRAVIS KAMPER, CA, is the recipient of the 2023 Progressive Genetics Herd Award for Group 1 for the first time. This is his fifth time being awarded the Protein Genetic Herd Award, the other years being 2018-2021. He also received the Ira Inman PTPR Herd Award in 2021 and 2022. He is a partner with his father and uncle in the family operation, Mt. Whitney Dairy, in Riverdale, CA. They milk 1885 Registered and Identified Holsteins and Red & Whites 2X. For the year 2023, the herd’s RHA was 31,420 lbs. ECM. They also raise all of their own replacements. In addition, they grow corn in the summer and triticale in the winter, both

for silage to feed to the herd. Travis also operates a Registered Brown Swiss herd currently consisting of 18 cows plus youngstock under the T-G prefix. In 2023, the herd RHA was 27,291 ECM on 2X milking. Travis bought his first two registered Brown Swiss heifers in 2008 and has been growing that herd since. One of those first two heifers was bred by the late Edwin Genasci, Cal-Ticino Pronto Sasha. Sasha went on to score E91 and become a Superior Brood Cow, producing for 10 lactations. The majority of the herd is descended from Sasha, and she has had offspring rank #1 for PPR on the Cow, Heifer, and Bull Lists at different times. The #3 PPR and #1 Milk heifer as of April proofs, T-G Crazy Horse Sia ETV, is a promising young descendant of Sasha. Travis serves as Treasurer of the California Brown Swiss Cattle Association, Treasurer of the California Milk Advisory Board, and a director on the local irrigation district board. He also serves as a Deacon at Trinity United Reformed Church of Visalia. 2023 Progressive Genetics Herd Award Group 2 (30-49 cows) Pictured, Sherry Ouellette, (missing Steve), President Tom Portner. The winner is IROQUOIS ACRES, BRIDPORT, VT, who currently have 4 generations on the farm. They are milking 600 cows and crop about 2200 acres. They are most notable for breeding the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion at 2023 WDE along with the All-American Senior Best Three. Current bulls being used are Collaps, Ray, Time Out, and First Choice. With an extensive IVF program, they have partnered with New Generation Genetics to genomic test all heifers born.

GROUP 3 (50-99 COWS)

PAUL ZIMMERMAN, BRODHEAD, WI, is the recipient of the Progressive Genetic Herd Award for Group 3 (50-99 Cows). Spring Grove Dairy was built in 1998. In 2010, Paul and Hilary made the tough decision to leave Northern California and move to Wisconsin. They wanted more opportunity for their new family and wanted to help turn around a struggling dairy. At the time, Spring Grove Dairy was milking around 1800 cows and after some heavy culling that number fell by 200 cows. Currently, Spring Grove is milking 2000 cows which are predominantly Holsteins, but Paul has a soft spot for his brown cows. Along with the Holsteins, the herd includes 300 Jerseys and 80 Brown Swiss. Currently, the herd is running 102 pounds of ECM milk. Spring Grove farms a little over 1400 acres, taking care of their corn silage needs, and buys excess commodities and haylage.

Travis, his wife Stephanie, and their children: Bennett, Colson, Audra, and Emery are double winners

Paul knows that a healthy and happy cow can always give you highquality milk, so there is a major focus on cow comfort and genetics. At Spring Grove, they have been genomic testing for many years and have certainly seen the benefit through marketing high genomic females and males and increasing the profitability of the herd.

2023 Progressive Genetics Herd Award Group 4 (100+ cows) winner is PERRY BROOK, WHITING, VT. Pictured Pres. Tom Portner, Kylie & Tenley Chittenden. We manage just over 1000 cows, with 120 being Swiss. They were previously mixed with the Holstein herd and seemed to thrive, but we’re now trialing a separation, tailoring their feed to leverage their strengths for component production. We’ve noted their dry matter intake is notably lower. We’re still figuring out the implications and how to measure the groups equitably against each other. The younger cows are mixed with the Holstein first-lactation group. Our farm boasts an extensive flush program (on-site IVF center), and we’re keenly focused on breeding well-balanced, profitable livestock for competition in stud. Over the past 36 months, we’ve sold bulls from seven different bull dams and are quite proud of our genetic progress towards a modern Swiss cow. We seek genetics that yield high production (components), attractive type, and robust health traits, especially reproductive. It was thrilling to see that our top-classified young cows in June were also our highest PPR young cows. Currently, our most celebrated cow family is Perry Brook Lucky Chance India. She’s the mother of the renowned bulls Crazy Horse, Elan, and Crazy Man. She’s also the dam of Perry Brook Pact Lulu ETV, who clinched the Genomic Merit Award in Wisconsin at World Dairy Expo 2022 and has consistently topped the high PPR heifer list. Her sister, Perry Brook Pact Winona ETV, has also made a significant impact on the lists and produced a notable bull we’ve sold to stud. We feel immensely fortunate to have a cow like India and her progeny on our farm.

The bulls that we have been using and have recent offspring from include the following...

n For recent fresh two-year-olds we are milking daughters of the following bulls: Sega, Pactole (our first, 2nd Pactole calf will be in July), Jonmar, Elmstar, Fizzy, Majeste, AltaTray, Damian, Trek, Jordy.

n Heifers that we are excited about are sired by the following: Rastarocket, Lover, Nashville, Perfection, Design, Halano P, Collaps, Tesla, Joey, Crazy Horse, Elan, Pontiac, Sully, Biniam.

n In our flush program we are using: Tesla, Topnotch, Crazy Horse, Toronto, Talico P, Vanilla, Sting, Prince, Tampa.

n New bulls we are breeding with include: Jim Beam, Nitro.

PROTEIN GENETIC HERD AWARDS

PAM & BRAD DIETSCHE, RENAISSANCE ACRES, COLFAX, WI, are the Protein Genetic Herd Award winner for Group 2 (30-49 cows).

Renaissance Acres, owned and operated by Brad and Pam Dietsche, is a dairy farm located between Colfax and Bloomer WI. Their herd consists

of 55 dairy cows, half of which are registered Brown Swiss and half registered Holsteins. The registered Brown Swiss came through the Identity Enrollment program back in the mid 1960’s. The rolling herd average is 20,000# of milk with a 4.19 butterfat and 3.6% protein. They grow approximately 125 acres of alfalfa hay, 150 acres of corn, and 150 acres of soybeans, with about 65 acres of pasture.

The dry cows and youngstock are rotationally grazed and the dairy herd is fed TMR consisting of corn silage, alfalfa haylage, and a protein mix of canola meal and Exceller soybean meal. Our breeding objective is to use the highest PPR and milk bulls available, both genomic and proven while leaning more heavily on the genomic bulls. The Dietsche’s were also recognized for 45 years of Continuous Production Testing.

Brad and Pam noted, “We’ve been blessed with five children who always enjoyed working together on our family farm while growing up. They each discovered specific areas of interest on the farm, and those interests have carried into their adult lives and careers. Today our family has grown from 7 to 20 with the addition of 2 more grandsons this past year. The ‘grands’ now look forward to the local fair each year where they can show a calf to receive a trophy; a program implemented for young children to experience showing prior to 4-H age. Our children and grands visit often, always happy to lend a helping hand if needed. They appreciate being able to share with the next generation the values of faith, family and a strong work ethic which they learned while being raised on the family farm.” As a sidenote granddaughter, Abigail Dietsche, purchased Just So F Faithfilled in the Swissconsin National Sale.

Protein Genetic Herd Award Group 4 (100+ cows)

FARMS, LLC, MINERAL POINT, WI The farm is family owned and operated by David & Joyce Wessel and son Rodney. Grandson Thomas is now working into the day-to-day duties on the dairy. The Wessels are milking 370 cows in a parlor/ freestall set-up, 117 of which are Brown Swiss with a 28,300m 4.4 1,270f 3.5 998p RHA, with the balance Holsteins. Dave relies heavily on NM$ and components when making sire selection. It’s not just pounds of fat and protein that are considered, percent of test needs to be plus as well. The Wessels were one of six 2021 Platinum Award winners for reproductive excellence from the Dairy Cattle Reproduction Council. The herd pregnancy rate was very impressive, running consistently near 39%. With such good reproduction, merchandising becomes an added bonus. The Wessels have sold cattle for export and to domestic buyers. A lifetime breeder of Brown Swiss, Dave and his family farm 700 acres owned and rented in Southwestern Wisconsin.

BSHS MASTER BREEDERS 2024

n 2024 BSHS Historical Master Breeder n

SUNSHINE GENETICS, INC.

Chris Keim and Dan Hornickel, Whitewater, Wisconsin

This year’s Historical Master Breeder is known worldwide. If you think about Embryo Technology and a source of elite bovine genetics, you think of Sunshine Genetics of Whitewater, Wisconsin, and the owners, Chris Keim and Dan Hornickel.

Chris and Dan met at the University of Illinois in the early 70’s in the college of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation, they went to separate practices in Wisconsin and Illinois. They later formed a partnership with Chris’s father, Lowell, who helped them produce their first ET calves from outstanding Brown Swiss females.

In 1983, they left their individual practices to locate their ET business on a farm near Whitewater, Wisconsin, starting Sunshine Genetics. There they created an international company that provided IVF and ET services to both small farms and large businesses. They also established the Sun-Made Brown Swiss herd.

The pair regularly invested in donor cows from “high profile” cow families. Many of the resulting embryos and ET offspring were marketed as foundation animals for other herds. Through the years, they provided the “home away from home” for their client’s best donor cows. Their focus was using their expertise with technology to develop ET offspring for other breeders. Being a Certified American Embryo Transfer Association Company, embryos have been exported to 25 different countries. Two of the early families developed in their herd include the Mort Matt Tammy family and the Top Acres Present family.

Sunshine was the caretakers for two World Dairy Expo Supreme Champions. The first was Lyndale Convincer Elaine in 1988 and 1989, and then Hoosier Knoll Jade Monay became Supreme in 1994.

Sunshine Genetics’ own herd with the Sun-Made prefix has earned numerous All American and production honors over the years. The herd has won the Group 1 PTPR award 12 times with a run of 7 consecutive years from 1991 to 1997. Animals with the Sun-Made prefix making National production records include the following:

Sun-Made Jetway Shatzi ET (M*) owned by Kent Thompson became the Breed Champion for Milk, Fat and Protein with her 8-2 365-day record of 53,460 milk, 2766 fat, and 1903 protein in 2006. She won the J. P. Eves and Protein Production Awards that year and the H. R. Searles Award for Fat in 2004.

In 2009, Sun-Made Garbro EG Patsy ET, owned by the Luttropp family, won the J. P. Eves and Protein Awards with a record at 5-02 in 305 days of 45,080 milk, 2258 fat, and 1511 protein. Both Shatzi and Patsy remain on the All-Time Top 10 Milk records as published in the June 2024 Bulletin.

Not only did Sun-Made cows make news, but one Sun-Made bull took the world by storm. Sun-Made Vigor ET *TM became one of the most influential bulls worldwide and particularly in Switzerland. Again, as published in the June 2024 Bulletin, three of the Top 10 cows for Living Lifetime Energy Corrected Milk (ECM) are sired by Sun-Made Vigor.

Sunshine has been a great supporter of the Youth programs, especially the Fun Auction. They have purchased the famous cow fly swatter five times and have been the top buyer of the Fun Sale four times.

Chris and Dan have served on national committees and the Wisconsin State Brown Swiss board. Sunshine Genetics has contributed greatly to the progress of the breed through the technology of Embryo Transfer. They were honored by receiving the National Distinguished Service Award in 2016.

Congratulations to the 2024 Historical Master Breeders, Sunshine Genetics, Dan Hornickel and Chris Keim. Chris had a previous family commitment this week, but Dan and his wife, Connie, are here to accept the Historical Master Breeder Award for 2024.

n 2024 BSHS Active Master Breeder n

SHELBURNE FARMS

Sam Dixon, Manager – Shelburne, Vermont)

This year’s Active Master Breeder has been in business almost forever. This year we congratulate Shelburne Farms, Shelburne, Vermont, as the 2024 Active Master Breeder, Sam Dixon, manager.

Shelburne Farms was established in 1886, as the private estate of the Webb/Vanderbilt family. Seward Webb was a doctor and his wife, Lila (Vanderbilt) Webb was a railroad magnate’s daughter. It was designed to be an expansive model farm showcasing the way in improving agriculture in Vermont. From those beginnings the vision evolved, and today Shelburne Farms stands as a world-class leader in the movement for sustainability education. It is a nonprofit organization located on the shores of Lake Champlain. The property is a 1400-acre working farm and home to a 200-cow Brown Swiss herd. It is also a National Historic Landmark.

The present Brown Swiss herd was started in 1947 when Derick Webb, owner and manager, bought the bull “Norman B. of Ethan Allen” from Allen Alfred. Derick began converting a mixed herd of grade cattle to the practical herd of working Brown Swiss. In 1953, they purchased the Cooper herd of Brown Swiss from Red Hook, NY, from which the current herd descended.

In 1962 Harold Magnussen, who had been manager of Walhalla Farms for 35 years, was hired as Cattle Consultant following the Walhalla Dispersal sale. Shelburne purchased 23 animals at the Walhalla dispersal and the herd now numbered over 300 head. Herb Stapleton

was field production manager. Magnussen was cattle superintendent at Shelburne from 1962 to 1969. Gordon Searles then became manager for many years until Sam Dixon took over in 1996. Shelburne strives for overall production with a goal of each cow reaching 100,000 pounds milk lifetime. And to verify that, in the early 90’s, the cow Shelburne Del SF 514 was the top lifetime milk production cow of the breed. She produced a total of 313,390 pounds of milk between 1977-1991 surpassing the ever-famous Ivetta cow at 308,569 which she had held since 1969. Shelburne also had several other cows well over the 200,000-pound milk level. The Shelburne herd won the Group 2 PTPR Award in 1990.

Shelburne Farms is a nonprofit educational institution teaching stewardship and conservation principals. The farm has over 100,000 visitors each year. They maintain a children’s farmyard and provide youth education in “learning to milk a cow”. They introduce agriculture and the dairy industry into the lives of urban children, including school tours.

Shelburne has been a strong supporter of Brown Swiss youth. For example, at the 2021 National Convention, they offered Wayne Sliker a choice of their March calves to be sold at the National Sale with the proceeds going to the Youth Fund. They also donated a cheese basket and 20 pounds of cheese to the youth.

Shelburne has also supported the Brown Swiss Historical Society by donating a calf to be sold at the National Sale in 2007 and again in 2012 with the proceeds going to the Historical Society. They have hosted two National Conventions in 2001 and 2012. They have graced the cover of Hoard’s Dairyman at least twice in 1996 and 2009.

It is my honor to present the Brown Swiss Historical Society Active Master Breeder Award to Shelburne Farms, Sam Dixon, Manager.

BSHS HALL OF FAME 2024

n Ira Inman (1868-1954) – Pioneer Award n

If you are looking for one person that provided the leadership instrumental in the recognition of Brown Swiss as a major dairy breed in the US, that would be Ira Inman. Ira was not only Executive Secretary for the Association for 32 years, but he was a breeder as well and an inspiration to all Brown Swiss breeders.

Breeder: Ira’s interest in Brown Swiss cattle began when in 1886 his older brother Tom, or T.H. Inman, brought the first Brown Swiss into Wisconsin with four cows and a bull purchased from J. B. Eldredge of Middle Falls, NY, one of the original importers of cattle from Switzerland. Ira worked for his brother taking care of the cattle, making the show circuit and by 1890 he started developing his own herd.

Ira married Susie Taylor on June 8, 1898, and established their home on a farm near Orfordville, Wisconsin, and later moved to a Beloit farm. Ira started many herds in the area and was instrumental in exporting Brown Swiss to Japan, Chile, Argentina, Cuba, South Africa, Mexico, and the Hawaiian Islands.

The best-known animals bred by Ira were McJohn’s Nellie M 17455 and her daughter, Illini Nellie 26578. Nellie M was sold to the University of Illinois carrying Illini Nellie. And we all know the Illini Nellie story of producing a record of 29,569 pounds of milk and 1200 pounds of fat which stood as a breed record from 1937 to 1949.

Breed Leader: Due to his enthusiasm for the Brown Swiss breed and his leadership ability, Ira was elected as Secretary of the Brown Swiss Association in January 1911. He established its office in a small basement room in his farmhouse on Riverside Drive, north of Beloit. (That farm area was later developed into housing known as Garden Village in the 1960’s, where Roger & Jean Neitzel have lived for the past 45 years. The area where his house stood is now Riverside Terrace Assisted Living. At the end of Inman Parkway are Inman buildings with an Inman Turkey sign.)

When Ira became secretary, the Association owed a sizable printing bill for Volume 1 of the Herd Book. When he retired, the association had an investment fund of over $36,000 and a checking account balance of almost $18,000. In Ira’s first year, the association registered 574 animals and the number grew to 12,819 in Ira’s final year. Here is Ira and his staff in the 1930’s.

The following are important events during Ira’s tenure:

1 May 1911 – The Register of Production Testing Program was adopted.

2 July 1922 – The first issue of the Brown Swiss Bulletin was published.

3 1925 – The Association was incorporated.

4 1932 – The Herd Testing Program was established.

5 1933 – Brown Swiss were included in the Collegiate Dairy Judging Contest at the Dairy Cattle Congress.

6 1936 – The permanent home for the Association at 800 Pleasant Street in Beloit was purchased and the building was remodeled for office needs. Built in 1856, the office is still the Association home today.

7 1938 – A Breed Extension Program was established. Fred Idtse was hired as the first field representative covering the entire US.

8 1938 – The first Parade of Champions was held at the National Dairy Show.

On July 29, 1941, Ira was honored in recognition of 30 years of service as Secretary and a plaque was unveiled which remains located near the cornerstone of the office building.

Community Leader: Ira served as assemblyman in the Wisconsin legislature from 1932 to 1936. He was appointed to the State Board of Agriculture in 1938, serving as Vice-chairman until 1942 when he became Chairman of the Board until 1951.

Acknowledgement: In the first issue of the larger-size Bulletin in July 1946, Secretary Fred Idtse paid tribute to Ira as the man who had probably contributed more than any other single individual to the Brown Swiss breed’s progress. His sound planning and wise counsel have influenced Association policies in the many years since. (Ira passed away on December 1, 1954).

Honor: Today we recognize Ira Inman as a Pioneer in the Brown Swiss Historical Society Hall of Fame. (We were unable to locate a relative to accept this award.

n Orville Kurtz (1923-1998) – Meritorious Service n

Orville was born October 14, 1923, to Theo and Ella Kurtz, and he was raised on Hillside Farm in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin School of Agriculture. He left the university to serve in the Navy from 1943-1946. He served in the Pacific, including supporting the Marines on Iwo Jima as a communications officer, and was later stationed in California. During leaves from the Navy, he visited West Coast Brown Swiss herds and developed a lasting friendship with Pete Panizza of Dixon, California.

After the war, he settled in central California and established his Rancho Rustic Brown Swiss herd. He married Vera Johnson in 1948 and they had two children, Candy and Randy.

Orville also had a sale business, managed the breed’s first consignment sale west of the Rockies in 1947, and paved the way for the first California State Sale in 1949.

Breeder: Orville developed the Rancho Rustic herd and toured the California show circuit for 20 years from 1946 to 1965. A foundational animal, Rancho Rustic My Design, born in 1963, had a profound effect on the development of the Brown Swiss breed. He was an All American and National Show grand champion, but his progeny had the real impact. Thirty years after his birth, My Design was found in pedigrees of 47 of the 80 young sires listed in the Performance Summary.

In 1965, Orville moved his family and herd to Milton, Wisconsin, where he operated Rancho Rustic for 9 years.

Orville was also a mentor and friend of Pete Vanderham, whom he met when Pete was a teenager interested in the big brown cow. He sold Pete several animals over a period of years; these became part of the base of the Bridge View herd. In 1968, Orville was at

the halter for Pete with Bridge View R F Joanne when she was named Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo.

Service: In 1974, Orville again relocated the Rancho Rustic herd, this time to Red Oak, Oklahoma. A year later, he sold most of the herd and he and Vera moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas. Orville’s enthusiasm for the breed then led him to take a position as South/ Central Area Representative for the Brown Swiss Association. Orville also became a classifier for the Association and was instrumental in the success of the Heart of America Sale. Orville served as an Area Rep. for 15 years, from 1975 to 1990. During that time, he also bred and owned animals with the prefix L K, in partnership with Gerald Laub.

Acknowledgement: At the pre-sale banquet of the Heart of America Sale in 1990, the Kansas Association presented Orville with a plaque in honor of his 15 years as their Area Rep. As Gerald Laub stated, “Orville was loyal to the Brown Swiss Breed and was one of the best cattlemen there ever was.” (Orville passed away on April 10, 1998.)

Honor: Today we recognize Orville Kurtz with the Meritorious Service Award in the BSHS Hall of Fame. We are honored to have Orville’s son Randy here to accept this award.

Brown Swiss Youth Ambassador

Hey y’all! My name is Hannah Loftin, and I am honored to be your 2024-2025 Brown Swiss Youth Ambassador. First off, I want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey thus far. It was amazing to meet everyone at the national convention hosted in Wisconsin recently, and I am eagerly looking forward to meeting many more of you in the future!

For our first bulletin article of the year, Isabella and I thought we would share a little bit more about ourselves and our journey to get here. With that being said, allow me to introduce myself. I am from a small town in North Carolina where my parents, Neal and Tonya, and I raise and milk my show cows, which consists of mostly registered Brown Swiss. Dairy farming and Brown Swiss cattle run deep in my blood as my great-grandparents on both sides’ dairy farmed in the 1960s and 1970s. However, it wasn’t until I got my first show calf, Muffin, for my 13th birthday that I really got involved in the industry. Until then, I was just involved in a few 4-H dairy contests, but little did I know these contests would have such a big impact on my life and take me to national contests. I had the honor of winning second place overall for the Brown Swiss portion of the 4-H dairy judging contest at World Dairy Expo, which far exceeded my goal of judging on the colored shavings.

Unfortunately, that chapter of my life has, in some ways, ended, but in some ways, it has just taken on a new look. I am currently in my last year of college, and I am working on becoming an agricultural teacher. Now, instead of competing in contests, I get to teach them, which I absolutely love! I enjoy teaching children everything there is to know about the dairy industry and dairy cows. But I especially love teaching showmanship and sharing my passion for Brown Swiss in

the show ring with “my kiddos”! I would not trade the start of this new chapter of my life for anything.

I want to take a moment to thank some important people in my life who have helped me along this journey. There are way too many people to name, but you all know who you are, and your help and support have meant more to me than you will ever know. Most importantly, I want to thank my parents, Neal and Tonya, and my sister, Brittany. Thank you for always supporting my goals and dreams and for always being behind me no matter what. I cannot wait to experience all of the amazing opportunities I am going to have this year in this role, and I look forward to meeting my fellow big brown cow lovers!

—Hannah Loftin, 2024-2025 Ambassador

Alternate Youth Brown Swiss Ambassador

Hello everyone! My name is Isabella Wilbur and I am so excited to fulfill the Alternate Youth Brown Swiss Ambassador position for this year! To start, I would like to congratulate my partner in this, Hannah. Also, congratulations to all the finalists and winner of the other Brown Swiss youth awards.

Now to share a little about me. I live in small town in Vermont named Orwell on my family’s farm. We have a small organic dairy of 40 milking cows with one Brown Swiss currently in milk. I have two daughters out of that cow who are both still on the farm. I also received my old cow as a gift but for Christmas in 2018. She not only started my love of Brown Swiss, but got me into the world of showing and becoming involved in breed associations.

I have been actively involved in my 4-H since I joined about 10 years ago. It has been amazing to look back and see how much I have grown through just being involved in the program. In turn, it is so rewarding to see the growth of the youth in my club knowing that I helped contribute to that. I hope that I can give back to the youth of Brown Swiss with this new role as I did to the youth in 4-H.

I would just like to quickly thank all who got me to this point in my life. My parents especially, but also all my local Brown Swiss lovers, the farm I got my first Swiss from, and my 4-H club leaders and older members. So excited for these coming years and all the things we have planned to do with the youth!

—Isabella Wilbur, 2024-2025 Alternate Ambassador

Introduction

The Brown Swiss Bulletin (1922-1962)

It has been 102 years this month since the first Brown Swiss Bulletin was published. A look in the past back to 1962 when the Bulletin was 40 Years Old, Marvin Kruse, who had been fieldman for eleven and a half years and now had been serving as Bulletin Editor for the past year, looked at the changes during those 40 years. It seems appropriate to repost Marvin’s editorial since Ira Inman is being honored this year by being inducted into the BSHS Hall of Fame.

Moving from ME to Average Age

In June, the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding’s (CDCB) publication of 305-ME (mature equivalent) was discontinued and replaced by 305-AA (average age) as the standardized yield estimate for U.S. dairy cows. This change incorporates current knowledge about the key variables that impact milk yield and improves the accuracy of the estimate.

In August, 305-AA will be implemented in the calculation of genetic evaluations by CDCB. As part of this transition, the 305AA yield estimates were added to CDCB animal queries in midJune.

Why does 305-AA matter?

The new descriptor stands for 305-average age. It is the new standardized yield estimation to compare cows of different ages, parities, climates, seasons of calving, and lactation lengths. This management tool estimates a cow’s production for a given lactation, adjusted to 36 months of age and utilizing partial yield measurements captured by milk testing.

This evolution from 305-ME to 305-AA better aligns with current management practices and environmental impacts on production levels. The 305-ME adjustments were updated in 1994 — 30 years ago. Research tells us that genetic selection impacts maturity patterns, and both herd management and the biology of the cow has changed. Dairy producers deserve updated tools for making accurate, fair comparisons among cows. This transition and the new 305-AA are based on a 2023 study by CDCB and USDA’s Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory analyzing more than 100 million milk yield records in the national cooperator database.

How will 305-AA affect each breed?

Holsteins will be the least impacted on a breed level as they were the primary data source utilized in the 1994 adjustments. Non-Holstein breeds will see more change, and this is a good thing! With more data now available, adjustments applied are more specific to each breed, rather than broadly calculated from a dataset dominated by Holstein.

The 305-AA adjustments will impact each breed’s Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs) differently. Yield traits will experience the most variation as the traits are specifically revised. There will be potential indirect impacts to a few other traits and direct impacts to Net Merit (NM$) and other indices that rely heavily on yield traits. Test runs of genomic data suggest a small reranking of bulls will take place with this change.

Based on CDCB test runs, the anticipated impacts on genomic PTAs include:

• Ayrshire: Stable with a mild increase in milk, fat, and protein for younger males.

• Brown Swiss: Overall yield PTAs for younger animals will increase slightly, while PTAs of older animals will remain fairly stable.

• Guernsey: Increase for young males with a decrease in milk, fat, and protein PTAs of older males.

• Holstein: Increase in yield PTAs for young males with more stability in older animals.

• Jersey: Noticeable decrease in yield PTAs of younger males, while older males will see an increase.

How is 305-AA different from 305-ME?

Before diving into the changes, note that two variables remain unchanged: standardizing lactations to a 2X milking frequency and the methodology for accounting for previous days open. Variables that have been improved through 305-AA include:

1. Season-region: Production is impacted by the geographical region where cows reside and the seasons' weather patterns. These types of impacts are mitigated for comparison’s sake through the standardization of data. Previously, cows were grouped into three geographical regions based on the herd code associated with the production record. In the new 305-AA formula, five climate-based regions are utilized, accounting for cows residing in the hottest to coldest parts of the U.S.

2. Breed impact: Previously, breed adjustments were calculated along with the season-region and age-parity adjustments, but now the breed-age-parity and seasonregion effects are estimated separately as two different multiplicative factors. When computing PTAs over the past 30 years, age-parity adjustments for smaller population breeds were heavily influenced by Holstein data but are now better estimated using their own data from recent years.

3. Standardized age: The most visible change in 305-AA is the evolution from ME to AA. Based on industry trends of today, the average cow in the U.S. is 3 years old, meaning that most cows never reach their mature equivalent age outlined in the 1994 report. Without achieving this age, it is not informative to compare cows at a mature equivalent status. Therefore, 305-AA standardizes lactations to 36 months, regardless of breed, to give a more realistic comparison.

Dairy producers rely on a variety of measurements to compare animals of different ages, geographical locations, and breeds. Whether by using NM$ to measure the economic potential of a cow’s genetics, a breed association’s type measurements, or the new 305-AA for yield traits, each is a tool designed to help producers make informed decisions.

Martin“Bud”Yoder

March 8, 1975 - June 29, 2024

At 49 years old, Bud Yoder took his last breath of life on this earth June 29, 2024, with his wife at his side.

Martin Wesley Yoder was born to John Junior and Lois Marie Yoder on March 8, 1975. His father nicknamed Martin “Bud” as he was the youngest of 8 children. Bud grew up on a farm near West Salem, Ohio; he lived and breathed farm life, from the first word he learned to spell – CASE (tractor) – to joining the local Wayne County 4-H Program.

In High School, Bud played basketball and was an active member of the Northwestern FFA. He graduated from Northwestern High School in 1993. Following graduation, Bud attended Rosedale Bible Institute, where he enjoyed friendships and participated in the RBI drama productions.

After RBI, Bud spent many years fitting cattle for shows and sales across the world in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Brazil. Bud developed a special relationship with Jim and Nancy Kemp when he worked for them as their cattle herdsman. Later, he also worked for David Hershey in the same capacity. While Martin loved working with cattle, he found his next calling working alongside Roger Baker. After a long stint with Roger, who almost succeeded at turning him into a Hollywood star (hear the full story at the service), Bud’s desire to be his own boss led him to start a hoof trimming business which he successfully operated for eight years.

Bud always said he did not want to “just marry a woman he could live with,” but to “marry a woman he couldn’t live without.” When he found the woman he couldn’t live without, he promptly sold his thriving business, his house, and moved to Canada, to marry Sarah (Donaldson) on June, 28, 2014.

Bud and Sarah wasted no time starting a family. 9 months and 1week after the wedding, they welcomed their daughter, Mikaela Joy Yoder on Aprºil 3, 2015. Bud started working on Sarah’s family’s farm. Bud quickly became the go-to man. He took the role with a charismatic willingness. Soon after, Sarah and Bud started their own farm, Golden Gate Farms. They built a state-of-the-art Lely robotic milking and feeding system and were a model farm for many tours. Bud enjoyed having farmers from all over the world tour the

farm and discuss old and progressive farming methods.

In 2018, Bud and Sarah welcomed their son, John Wesley Yoder to complete their family. Bud lived to farm and enjoy the company of his family. He included his family in everything he did and wanted to pursue. He enjoyed family trips, side by side trips, traveling to Madison, Wisconsin, for World Dairy Expo to exhibit his cows.

He was a true showman. Always displaying a true example to youth and fellow friends in his everyday actions.

Bud attended Bradner Presbyterian Church and was active in the ministry. He was a true shepherd in how he lived. He lived by God’s word, and shared and taught his children all life’s lessons from its pages.

Bud was preceded in death by his father, John Junior Yoder (2014) and father-in-law Rob Donaldson (2022).

He leaves behind his loving wife of 10 years, Sarah Yoder and two children Mikaela Joy Yoder (9) and John Wesley Yoder (6). He is survived by his mother Lois Yoder, Wooster, OH; his siblings Linda (James) Nissley, Tucson, AZ; Delbert (Heather) Yoder, West Salem, OH; Daniel Yoder, Apple Creek, OH; Glenda (Marvin) Zuercher, Wooster, OH; Myron Yoder, Centerville, OH; Anita (Ryan) Hostetler, Mechanicsburg, OH; Marla Yoder, Columbus, OH. Bud will also be greatly missed by his many nephews and nieces. He always had a way of making each one feel like they were his favorite.

There will be a Tribute to Bud’s Life in Bradner, BC, and another in Wooster, Ohio. See details below.

Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Bradner Community Hall, 5305 Bradner Rd, Abbotsford, BC, V4X 2P1.

The family extends an invitation to everyone that knew or called Bud a friend. There will be an opportunity to share a memory or how Bud impacted your life. Refreshments to follow.

Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Roger Baker’s Farm, 6609 Ashland Road, Wooster, OH 44691.

A tribute, followed by a time of visitation and a meal provided by farmers and friends of the agricultural community that loved Bud. If you knew Bud, please plan to attend and share your memories with family and friends in private conversation or at the open mic during the meal. There will also be a Keepsake Box for you to share a written memory of Bud with his children that they can enjoy for years to come.
