There’s a funny meme that floats around social media that says, “ranching is saying ‘next week will be easier’ over and over again until you die.” This year really proved true! After finishing a great sale last spring (thank you to all of our customers!), we found ourselves jumping head-first into breeding and turn-out. What we hoped would be a wet spring turned into another drought year at the base of the Bighorns. We were fortunate to find seasonal pasture and kicked our girls out in two different groups in the Foothills and out East of our headquarters where the grass really has a punch. This followed closely by the news that our family ranch had received a purchase offer and we spent early summer preparing for its succesful transition and our relocation down the road to a new ranch. This new ranch brings exciting new things for us, including the use of a Forest permit, which will allow us to PAP test and further test and improve our utility selection for customers.
August changed everything for us. We closed on the ranches and two days later the largest wildfire in Wyoming history was lit by a lightning strike about four miles from us. The wind blew hard (albeit away from us) and the fire moved unprecedentedly fast; Over 270 square miles of prime grassland burned in 35 hours, including right through the area where half our cows had been temporarily relocated this summer and through the ranches of many of our customers and closest friends. Helpless and devastating hardly puts the feeling into words. But, from the ashes, we’ve witnessed the most remarkable thing happen. Our little community has come together closer and stronger than before - determined to keep ranching alive in our county and not let a neighbor fall based on how the winds blew that fateful day. Very few animal lives were lost those two days and not a single structure burned. We were able to safely get our girls home to the new ranch and scrambled to get everything moved and processed.
Between the fire and the transition, we had to make some tough calls about what was best for our animals and not necessarily what was best for timing on proper data collection. The algorithm can be unforgiving and we believe in reporting only accurate data. If you see missing data or some information that doesn’t make sense, please reach out to Tyler.
That being said, we are very excited about our offering this year. This is the most consistent set of bulls to date; We made three deep cuts to get to what is represented in the catalog. We’re also thrilled with the heifers we are able to offer this year. It’s a great representation of our replacement pen and if our replacements turn out anything like (or better than!) our heifers that calved this year, the future is very bright.
Due to the move, we’ve relocated our bull sale to the sale barn in Buffalo, WY. We’ll still have tri-tip for lunch and plenty of laughs and stories to share, so please join us on March 18, 2025! Let’s just plan to talk about the thing we all love - cattle - and not drought… or fire… See you in March!

4-H played an incredible role in both Tyler’s and Megan’s lives. In fact, we still have bloodlines in our herd that go back to Tyler’s first catch-a-calf! In the spirit of involving and energizing youth as others did for us, we are donating a registered heifer straight from our replacement herd to a kid who attends our 2025 bull sale. Any youth under 20 can stop by the clerk’s table on sale day to receive a ticket, which will be drawn at the end of the auction. Must be present to win. Here’s to great kids who’ve been bitten by the cattle bug!

Lots 6 and 7 are flush brothers and are maternal brothers to Brookings Firebrand. We got the opportunity to flush the Angus marton Brooking Annie K 390 and we were quick to use Trophyclass knowing that great things would come from lining up two outstanding females in U7 and 390. Our personal goal was to get females out of this mating, so rest assured those who get these bulls will be plenty happy. We look for these bulls to sire outstanding females that will last a long time.

THE STORY BEHIND THE BRAND
Elk are a common sight every fall at the ranch in Buffalo, WY. And, as exciting as seeing a few hundred head out with the beef cows in the hay meadows can be, that’s not why we call ourselves ELK Angus. Our brand, [reverse E] L K, comes from an old family story where Tyler’s down-the-line uncle worked the Y-Y ranch in the Southwest. Another ranch hand was rustling cattle by changing the Y-Y to [reverse E] L K, and when the government discovered this, those cattle were offered for sale where Tyler’s distant uncle purchased his first herd. We revived the brand a few generations later.
THANK YOU.
We simply couldn’t do this without the physical help of our family and friends, and the full list of people who had our backs this year could fill this catalog. We wanted to give a special shout-out to a few people who made this past year possible, simpler, and maybe even a little more fun. Between the House Draw Fire and moving, we really had our hands full this year and our friends who are like family made the impossible actually possible. We appreciate getting to make memories and stories with you, even in the most difficult moments of ranching.
