It is our pleasure we invite you to the 2024 “BUILD YOUR HERD” events and sale at Haugestuen Ranches! 2024 marks the 36th year we have been in the beef industry providing quality genetics.

Our story began 36 years ago in 1988 with the purchase of 120 acres, a 1550 Oliver tractor, a 24T John Deere square baler, 3 Charolais cows and a friendly banker. Vaccinating cattle with a lariat and a well-oiled railroad tie sunk deep into the ground provided all the excitement needed for a goal of purchasing a chute with a head gate. Many changes came rapidly with new technology, science and the value of utilizing resources.

Our dream of providing seedstock to the beef industry became a reality in 1998 with multiple years of successful bull sales in Mitchell South Dakota until the market became so soft even good bulls brought steer prices. We hauled two loads of bulls’ home and treated our wounds with many doses of conservative budget planning. Ranch lessons continue each year as our cattle business is dependent upon markets, weather events and the ever-present human factors.

In 2003 our registered herd of Charolais cattle was dispersed and replaced with Angus and SimAngus from eastern Montana. This decision marked a turning point of a black hided demand from bull buyers and many years of private treaty sales building a local reputation of honesty and transparency. The greatest satisfaction over the years came from hard work with the family pulling side-by-side in the same direction. Julie and I have been blessed beyond measure over the past 36 years. We now have 4 grown children with great spouses and 11 grandchildren who are the joy of our lives. As the 2024 “BUILD YOUR HERD” sale takes place we reflect upon our valued customers who allow us to do what we love, raise cattle. BULL DEVELOPMENT/PERFORMANCE TEST

“BUILD YOUR HERD” bulls are bred, born, and raised right here on the ranch with “no creep” to allow them to exhibit their natural genetic makeup. Just mama’s milk and grass! Bull development begins with extensive planning and great genetics, the influence of the cow and environment while bulls are on pasture, the transition period during weaning, sound management while bulls develop, adequate nutrition for growth, and daily play yard activity. To lessen the importance of one criterion in comparison to another weakens the link between each in creating a herd sire expected to pass on his genetics for years to come.

“BUILD YOUR HERD” bulls transitioned into the development center October 1, 2023 and were fed a nutrient dense ration to express their genetic profile. All bulls were on a 90-day performance test targeting a 3-4 lb. average daily gain (ADG). This allows us to identify the genetic differences, yet not overfeed which creates development problems seen at a later age. As bulls get closer to sale day the ration becomes less energy with more fiber. By sale day the ration is similar to turn out for breeding season.We take bull development seriously to protect your investment!The bulls have access to a large dirt play yard 24 hours a day which creates a hardactive muscle rather than a soft-sedentary muscle. This enhances durability and longevity of your bull. “BUILD YOUR HERD” bulls are developed as athletes prepared to work for you!

There will be no buyers fee! Your bid price is the actual cost for the lot being bid on. Buyers will have one week to settle payment with Hansen and Young. Sale day questions to Hansen and Young can be answered by Toya at (715)642-1821. Questions about sale lots can be answered by Kirk at (715)790-4385.

Bids may be placed at this time with hansenandyoung.com. The sale begins closing at 1PM on April 6, 2024. Each lot, beginning with Lot 1, will “soft close” in 2-minute increments, consecutively as listed in the sale catalog, Lot 1 through Lot 51. If a lot has a contending bidder, each bidder will have 5 minutes to place their next bid before the lot closes. This process will continue until the bidding is finished on the lot. The lot will be closed and sold to the highest bidder. All animals are purchaser’s risk as soon as sale concludes.

HERD HEALTH/FERTILITY/BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAM All animals have been on a comprehensive health program as prescribed by, Dr. Andrew Dietsche, DVM of Scenic Hill Embryo Transfer, Bloomer, Wisconsin. BOARD AND DELIVERY Bulls: Bulls will be fed free of charge until May 1, 2024, a semen fertility and breeding soundness exam (BSE) performed and then pick-up or delivery planned.After May 1st, bulls will be charged $5.00 per head/per day for feed.

Females: Females will be scheduled for pick-up or delivery within one week of April 6, 2024.

“Fertility Matters!!!”

The most profitable traits in any herd are fertility and longevity. We select sires based upon highly proven maternally rich pedigrees. This can be tracked by the number of calves a cow has in a tight calving window, and by her age or longevity in the herd, and by the proven sires in a particular pedigree. The sires must score reasonably high $M and Heifer Pregnancy (HP) and provide a balanced EPD profile of all other traits. We will always stay true to our maternal convictions, and we stay away from the extreme numbers which may create imbalance in the pedigree.
