Welcome!
You may be wondering why on earth a Lazy C Diamond Ranch sale catalog is in your hands in November instead of late January….
We have made some major adjustments over the last year and a half. Our calving dates have been backed up to start May 1 – making it feasible to calve out on grass and avoid the worst of our ND winter/spring weather. We’ve seen increased calf health and viability and much less STRESS on man and beast! We plan to develop the sale animals and sell them as 18 month olds the following fall. We truly believe it to be a better model for selling registered seedstock. The bulls can be developed slower to ensure longevity and mature more physically. It also gives us a much bigger window to evaluate the animal’s disposition, foot quality, and physical attributes. Ultimately, providing you with a sound breeding animal that has passed a semen test before sale day and is ready for heavy use come turnout time.
We are currently smack dab in the middle of that transition – we split the 2023 bull calf crop in half, sold half in February of 2024 and developed the other half for this first Fall 2024 Sale. The May/June born 2024 calf crop will be weaned here shortly to start the process all over again for the planned Fall 2025 Sale. Also, for the first time this year we will be offering a sizable group of bred heifers to offer you November 16th! We dug deep into the replacement pen and often were cringing as we sorted some beautiful donor caliber heifers into the sale group.
With each year that passes, we strive to improve upon the foundation we’ve been blessed to work with. Our vision and commitment has never wavered. We aggressively aspire to assemble a breeding animal that not only covers all the basics, but also holds true to what “Simmental” is best known for – PERFORMANCE! We believe Simmental cattle are the most versatile beef breed and literally can cover all the bases, and we seek to prove that to the best of our abilities.
Our family is well; the kids are growing like crazy and bring joy and laughs to our everyday life. We are thankful to get to raise them in this ranching lifestyle and all the foundational life lessons it presents. The cows are our passion and livelihood but yet at the end of the day, the little people that we are shaping and raising to be warriors of light in this world are our highest priority. We hope that you can relate.
Tyler Long and my brother Brock are my faithful “A Team” to tackle the day-to-day at the ranch. They put in countless hours throughout the year and always have smiles on their faces. Tyler got married this fall and now along with the smile, he also whistles while he works. My sister, Mary, and mother-in-law, Lisa, watch the kids during the week while Julia continues to work as a speech pathologist in the local school system. We are thankful for our team and the hours they dedicate to the ranch and our family!
As in the past, the sale format will be a video auction and broadcasted online through DVAuction. We have bid on and bought many bulls and females through DV and highly recommend utilizing this bidding method if you are unable to attend sale day. We also invite each of you to visit the ranch ahead of the sale to sort through the bulls and females, see dams, and visit one-on-one about the specific needs of your program when making bull selections. We offer a $100 discount to be used towards a bull purchase if you visit the ranch between October 25th and November 15th.
As always, don’t be afraid to give us a call with any questions about the offering! We are excited to visit and hope to see you November 16th!
Sincerely,
Chris, Julia, Ivy, Flint, Lainee, Shaye, and Rhen Nicholson

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Please register for a bidding number sale day! When registering for a bidder number, please give the office staff your current ASA number for transferring registration papers.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
Terms of the sale are cash/check. Every animal will be sold to the highest bidder. Announced changes in the catalog information on sale day take precedence over printed material in this catalog.
All animals listed in catalog having Homozygous Black or Homozygous Polled are done so to the best of our knowledge. We are not liable for any inaccuracies. All cattle sell under the terms and conditions of the American Simmental Association.
LIABILITY:
Any person attending the sale does so at his/her own risk. Neither the sale management, owners, nor any person connected with this sale, assumes any liability, legal or otherwise.
INSURANCE:
We recommend insuring your bulls or females in the case of unexpected fatality. Insurance will be available sale day.
IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER:
Watch LazyCDiamondSimmRanch on Facebook, or listen to KFYR 550 AM – KSJB 600 AM.
FARM VISITS:
We encourage farm visits at your convenience. Visitors to the ranch between October 25 and November 15 will get a $100 discount off of a sale day bull purchase. Being the auction format is a video sale, and no animals will walk through a ring, we highly recommend coming early sale day to have enough time to evaluate all the bulls. We hope to see many of you!

ADG & FEED RATION:
701-475-4478
We work with PNC Feeds of Hebron, ND for balancing the ration. We shoot for a 3.5 lb ADG average on the bulls. We feel that shows their growth potential without sacrificing their longevity by getting over conditioned and the chance of ruining feet. We are developing “athletes” that will last for you. They are developed in big open pens and get plenty of exercise to properly develop.
DELIVERY:
Delivery of the bulls will begin shortly after the Sale. The bulls have passed a semen evaluation and are ready to be incorporated into your operation. We offer free delivery up to 250 miles from the Ranch. We will work with the buyer to arrange the most economical delivery for distances beyond 250 miles. Bred heifer transportation is the responsibility of the buyer unless we can combine with a bull delivery run. We would like the bred heifers picked up as soon as possible after the sale. Both bulls and heifers can be taken home sale day if you are attending in person and bring a trailer.

GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDS:
All of the bulls selling in the 2024 Sale have EPD’s enhanced with DNA technology. We are investing in the latest technology available to provide you with the most accurate EPD’s possible. This technology improves the accuracy of EPDs on yearling bulls as if they were an older bull with progeny proof! You will see “Genomic Enhanced EPDs” above the EPD box of the bulls that have genomic enhanced EPD profile
RETAINED SEMEN INTERESTS:
We’ve wanted a transparent scale of retained semen interest that we can refer to, thus resulting in no behind the scenes deal that benefits one bidder over another. Please refer to the retained semen interest levels below. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call.
Up to $19,999 we will retain 50% semen interest
$20,000 to $39,999 we will retain 33.3% semen interest
$40,000 and above we will retain 25% semen interest
The buyer has the option to buy out our retained semen interest at the time of the sale if so desired. In the case that the buyout of seller’s retained semen interest happens, we retain the right to collect semen on the bull at our own expense for in herd use only. The formula we use to calculate the semen interest buyout is as follows:
[Purchase price = semen rights already purchased (60% of purchase price) + pasture rights (40% of purchase price)]
DOCILITY SCORES (DOC):
Please note the docility score for each animal. We use a scoring system from 1-6 with lower scores indicating calmer, gentler cattle: 1 – Docile; 2 – Restless; 3 – Nervous; 4 – Flighty; 5 – Aggressive; 6 – Very Aggressive. Most of the bulls will fall in the 1 or 2 category, with an occasional 3. Anything above a 3 is automatically culled from the bull pen. Please use this as a relative gauge for your operation. If you have a lot of help from your family or inexperienced workers while working with your cattle, we recommend buying 1 and 2 scoring cattle. 3’s are completely manageable but have at times shown to be more nervous. These scores are based on our daily interactions with the bull to date. Keep in mind, as an animal gets older, or with different handling, its attitude can change.
BEGINNING RANCHER DISCOUNT :
We are offering a “Beginning Rancher Discount” on bull purchases from LCDR. We realize the financial burden it takes to get established in this industry and want to encourage young producers within the cattle business. We will apply a 5% discount to your total purchases. Purchases must be for use within your own cowherd.
ELIGIBILITY:
30 years old or younger or have been ranching for less than 10 years.
VOLUME DISCOUNTS :
We will be offering the following discounts for volume bull buyers:
3 head – 3% off total purchases
4 head – 4% off total purchases
5 head or more – 5% off total purchases
BULL GUARANTEE:
a. We offer a 60 day breeding season guarantee that covers fertility and career ending injuries within that first 60 day turnout. A replacement of equal value or sale credit (minus salvage value) will be issued for the following sale. Issues such as frozen scrotums and poor nutrition that are out of our control will not be covered. A veterinarian’s opinion may be requested.
b. All bulls have passed a semen evaluation prior to the sale. If you are using the bull for the 1st time in the spring/summer of 2025, we recommend doing another breeding soundness exam prior to turnout.
c. We ask that you contact us immediately if any other issues arise and we will do our best to make it right. We appreciate your business and strive to provide you with a guaranteed, superior breeding animal.
HERD HEALTH:
We have completed 5 years of whole herd Johne’s testing and all dams of LCDR raised sale cattle tested negative in January of 2024. Bull calves will not have received any foot root or pinkeye vaccines prior to delivery.

836Z has been an influential female especially through the contribution of her well known son, 867B (Sire of Reserve, Anthem, Patriot, Retro and Embrace). She’s an incredibly impressive female that despite having an all “production” pedigree, offers a beautiful style and look. We purchased her from our good friend, Bob Fitzpatrick a couple years ago and have successfully been flushing her since! We had the opportunity to buy one of the last daughters Bob had by her (HHS Ms Joy 836J - pictured) this fall and decided to offer 836Z in her entirety as a proven donor!. Her calf at side will be weaned shortly before sale time and she sells open and ready to flush!

Captivate is an absolute dominant force and one of the most well-rounded sires in the red Simmental world. He has more then surpassed our hopeful expectations of how he would produce. He calves easy and can be used on heifers, yet still has top 5% and 10% weaning and yearling! His maternal traits and docility are all within the top percentiles of the breed. He consistently produces structurally impressive, docile sons with large scrotals and the young daughters are feminine and attractive. We really couldn’t have asked more of him!

Benefits of the November Sale Model:
1. The bulls have passed a semen test before they ever sell. Selling untested yearling bulls in Feb. always comes with a certain amount of unspoken stress for both buyer and seller. There are always SOME bulls that don’t pass that semen evaluation later in the spring, or take awhile to pass and that causes a state of limbo for both parties. Having this done and out of the way before they ever sell insures that you will get the bull you buy!
2. Bulls will be delivered shortly after the sale. Your bulls will have time to acclimate to your operation in terms of both handling and feeding. Some may wish we’d keep and feed them until next spring; but honestly, they are better off in your possession. Just imagine 6070 coming 2 y/o bulls in one pen, hyped up on testosterone, and screwing around with each other for the next 4-5 months. You can about imagine how many will get hurt and even worse, damaged beyond ever covering cows. They are much better off acclimating to your herd bull pen and starting out on the bottom of the pecking order from the start.
3. Added time for semen collection and promotion. The extra months and the added age alleviates A LOT of stress from those fast approaching deadlines from the spring sales run in terms of freezing semen, getting a great picture, and getting a marketing plan in place.
4. Bulls that are 18 months at sale time gives you peace of mind. I know that thought of turning out yearling bulls, especially in single bull pastures, adds a certain amount of stress to my summer. You hope he knows what he is doing and is getting his 25(ish)cows covered. Having a bull that is bigger and more sexually mature just takes away that stress right off the bat. He should be able to readily handle 30 plus females that first year, likely even more.
5. Added longevity to the life of your breeding bull. Most of us have experienced the yearling bull that comes off cows after that first breeding season and enters into the ugliest stage of his life. He’s growing, he’s been used fairly hard, and his body has a hard time keeping up. These older bulls have been turned out on grass to grow and develop over the summer without the added stress of covering cows so they have been developed through those important growth stages. Instead of playing catch up through what is usually that “ugly stage”, they are looking the best they ever have and will be ready for HEAVY usage come breeding time.
6. Now offering bred heifers! As before, we will continue to offer heifers and donor-caliber females off the top of our replacement pen, but they will now be offered as BREDS instead of OPENS. You will have the added value of a calf for ROI, with no stress of breeding that first year because she is already safe in calf. You can start thinking about your plan for flushing after that first calf is born! We are also planning to increase the numbers of bred heifers offered in the next couple of years!
Photos---
We’ve made the decision to shift away from professional photos of our bulls, and we want to share why this change is important to us. Authenticity and transparency are core values of our business, and we believe that unedited images better reflect each bull’s natural appearance and structure. Over the years, edited images have become common in this industry, but they can sometimes create unrealistic expectations. By providing straightforward, unedited photos, we’re ensuring that the bull you see truly represents the animal you’re purchasing.
We trialed this approach for our February 2024 sale, using photos we took ourselves. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many customers expressing appreciation for the clear and honest representation of our bulls. Based on this feedback, we’re committed to continuing this approach, making it easier for you to make informed decisions based on each bull’s true qualities. We’re grateful for your support as we prioritize authenticity and strive to bring you a transparent, trustworthy buying experience.
Bull Guarantee---
Payment Plan---
We realize that switching to a non-traditional fall sale may cause some havoc with cash flow plans. We are more than willing to work with you if payment before the end of the year just doesn’t work for your program. We understand that most plan for bull buying expenses after the 1st of the new year and if we can assist with a feasible payment plan that fits your operating loan schedule, we are happy to accommodate. Please call and talk to Chris prior to sale day to discuss a plan!
Lastly---
We owe a huge shout out and “thank you” to our close friends, Doug and Maria Bichler, who have not only supported and encouraged us, but have also openly shared their knowledge and experience of transitioning to a fall sale and aged bull production model. We are intentionally holding our sales close together (Saturday evening/Monday afternoon) to hopefully encourage and accommodate anyone coming from a distance to easily attend both sales. We hope that it becomes the “Simmental Event” you won’t want to miss! Be sure to check out the Bichler Simmental offering @ www.bichlersimmentals.com
Thank you for your support of our program!
