My Fellow Breeders
I
t is sale time again at TC Ranch and we have just finished our catalog. Some of you breeders have already had your sales and I trust they have all gone well as it looks to be a very good year for sales in the cattle industry. In fact, I believe that during the next few years, the cattle business will enjoy some of the best times we have ever seen. It is in good times such as these that it is of vital importance that we as breeders hold ourselves and our products to the highest standards. Here in southern Nebraska we have seen some unusual weather for calving season. Calving is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. Seeing the new calf crop is exciting and thinking about how this
Nebraska Angus Association
generation will move our breed forward is always encouraging. Spring is right around the corner and soon our thoughts will turn to breeding season with a new set of challenges and rewards. I congratulate those of you who have had good sales and hope those of you with upcoming sales have good luck. Until next time, I wish all of us plentiful moisture to bring knee-high grass to the pastures.

I
am sure that you will receive this publication right after our quarterly American Angus Association board meeting in St. Joe Feb. 18 – 21, so I apologize in advance for missing the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic and not being able to report to you at this time about the board meeting. Hopefully I will catch up on board meeting highlights in the next issue. At this time I’d like to reiterate that the American Angus Association is there for the benefit of you the membership. You should and have demanded prompt and courteous service from the association, and that service is now second to none in the industry. You should also demand that the assets amassed by the membership over the years, i.e. the database and most reliable EPDs in the industry, should be exclusive only to the members of the American Angus Association. Even though we are currently experiencing record cattle prices in all sectors of the industry, this isn’t a time to make these assets available to all. The association provides tools for us to use to maintain our competitive edge over all other competitors. Of most value to our customers is the confidence they have in our database, EPDs and $Values
and the value they earn by the perception of QUALITY when using the word “Angus” in the market place. Once again, it is an honor to represent you on the American Angus Association board of directors. Please call if you have any suggestions or questions. Good luck in the upcoming spring production sale season.
Sincerely, Arlen Sawyer AAA Director

Nebraska Angus Queen Spotlight
M
iss Nebraska Angus 2013-2014
Princeton, NE is home to this year’s Nebraska Angus Queen, Maci Lienemann, and Angus cattle have been an influence in her life as long as she can remember. One of her earliest childhood memories is serving as “Host” for an impromptu Angus cattle show in her living room. “Well, we have a real nice group of cattle to look at here today. They are nice, big, and black,” she announced from her Little Tykes table in the living room as her younger brother, Taylon, entered the “show ring” leading their Black Lab puppy, appropriately named Angus. Angus cattle and involvement for the Lienemann’s has always been a family affair. Her Dad Trevor, is a CPA by schooling, but a cowboy at heart. Her Mom, Torri Ortiz Lienemann, has her PhD in Special Education, and is the Assistant Special Education Director and District Learning Coordinator at Norris School District. Maci is the oldest of four children, with a younger brother and two younger sisters. Her brother, Taylon, is a senior, and her sisters, Sydni and Skylar are a sophomore and 8th grader respectively, all at the Norris School district south of Lincoln. All four of the Lienemann children are actively involved in their family cattle operation (Lienetics), and each of them have their own individual Angus herds as well. Maci and her siblings are also very active in the Nebraska and National Junior Angus Associations. If one word can be used to describe Maci, that word would be “active”. A sophomore at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she is involved in many organizations and holds various leadership positions. Such as UNL Animal Science Stu12 • March/April 2014 • Nebraska Angus Association News
dent Ambassador; Nebraska Beef Industry Scholars; University Honor’s program; UNL Alpha Zeta – Agricultural Honor Society where she serves as Student Representative. She’s a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority where she serves as a Leadership Council member; a volunteer group leader for Nebraska Youth Beef
Leaders Symposium (NYBLS); UNL Block & Bridle/Collegiate Cattlemen; FFA Alumni; Collegiate Farm Bureau; and she’s a student member of National Cattlemen’s Beef Association & Nebraska Cattlemen. In the past she has been involved in Nebraska FFA and holds the FFA American degree, she was State FFA Vice President and traveled to Argentina as a participant in the International Leadership Seminar for State Officers. Currently, Maci is serving as President of the Nebraska Jr. Angus Association and last summer she was selected as American Angus Association Ambassador.
As a young child, Maci wanted to be a cattle showman and a leader in the Nebraska Jr. Angus Association. She idolized young ladies like her neighbor, Kourtney Nelson, a past Nebraska Angus Queen and supreme showman. To Maci, young women like Kourtney, who were both leaders in and out of the show ring, projected strength and character. These influences have been some of the driving forces that have helped Maci to become the strong, confident, capable leader she is today. Maci’s future goals and aspirations are greatly influenced by her desire to improve practice, products and policies surrounding the beef industry. An academic goal is to obtain an advanced degree in animal science research, specifically focusing on advancing genetics within the livestock industry. She also has leadership aspirations related to the beef industry, specifically in the near future to earn a position as a National Junior Angus Association board member and also earn her Gold Award. She hopes all of her activities and participation in various organizations will allow her to be ultimately influential within the beef industry, her lifelong passion. Maci is honored to be serving the Nebraska Angus Association as the Queen and she will always represent the Angus breed to the best of her ability.
Maci performs some fall cattle chores on animals in her MML Cattle Co. herd.
$EN GUIDELINES WHEN SELECTING YOUR HERD BULL by Tonya Amen, American Angus Association, Genetic Service Director
As I traveled around the country visiting with Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen, especially those in low rainfall areas such as the Nebraska Sandhills, I’ll inevitably field a question about the $EN value published by the American Angus Association. First of all, what are the $Values ($W, $B, $EN, etc)? Most simply stated, the $Value Indexes are bio-economic selection indexes, which of course begs the question, “what’s a selection index?” Selection indices in general are used to simplify genetic selection decisions by incorporating multiple traits into one number, allowing for simultaneous change in those traits through the use on one, easily-interpreted number reported in dollars. The Angus $Values specifically take into account the outputs considered on the revenue side of the profit equation, but they also consider the input, or expense, side associated with the production phase of interest. The $Values incorporate both genetic components (EPDs) and economic terms relevant to feedlot performance, carcass merit and cow-calf production. Before using any selection index in your breeding decisions, it’s really important to understand the traits underlying the index. If the trait EPDs
This Bull Sells!
used in the computation of the index are not those that are important for the production goals and needs of your ranch, using them as a selection tool may not yield the desired result. So let’s take a look at $W and its related pre-weaning index, $EN.
What is $EN? $EN is specialized index which accounts for savings in future daughters due to their anticipated lactation and maintenance energy requirements. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals Continued on next page...
Nebraska Angus Association News • March/April 2014 • 15
as it’s an indicator of more dollars saved on feed expenses. • Milk EPDS • Mature Cow size EPDS (Mature Weight and Mature Height) • Depending on the accuracy and availability of mature size EPDs, the corresponding yearling measurements may be used because of their high genetic correlation with mature cow traits. What is $W? $W is the other $Value geared toward preweaning performance and maternal traits of the cow herd. In addition to economic and energy requirement assumptions $W includes the following EPDs: 16 • March/April 2014 • Nebraska Angus Association News
• Birth weight • Weaning weight • Milk • Mature cow size EPDS (Mature Weight and Mature Height) • Depending on the accuracy and availability of mature size EPDs, the corresponding yearling measurements may be used due to their high genetic correlation with the same traits in the mature cow. You’ll notice that the Milk and Mature cow size features of $EN are also included in the $W index. So, why both indexes? In some variable environments with limited feed resources, extreme negative values for $EN may be undesirable. However,
caution must be used because continued selection for high, positive $EN without proper balance on some type of calf output (WW, YW, etc) could lead to unnecessarily small mature cows with excessively low milk production. With that in mind, it’s important to re-emphasize that $W includes all of the math associated with $EN, but also incorporates appropriate focus on calf growth. Since many commercial operations still rely on selling weaned calves as the major revenue source, we can’t lose sight of the importance of outputs as well as inputs in a balanced breeding program.

representing mature weight is not as steep as those for weaning and yearling weights, which indicates that selection pressure has been placed against mature weight while simultaneously selecting for increasing weaning and yearling weights. Even though there is a strong positive genetic correlation between weaning weight and mature weight, Angus producers have been able to identify unique animals that combine high growth and moderate mature size.

STATE VETERINARIAN REMINDS PRODUCERS OF REPORTING REQUIREMENTS FOR CATTLE THAT TEST POSITIVE FOR TRICHOMONIASIS LINCOLN – As cattle producers conduct breeding soundness and Trichomoniasis testing this year, State Veterinarian Dr. Dennis Hughes would like to remind producers of their responsibilities, if they have a positive Trichomoniasis diagnosis within their herd. According to Hughes, LB 423 was passed last spring and took effect in September. The statute has some specific reporting requirements for producers who have a positive Trichomoniasis
diagnosis within their herd, including: 1. The cattle producer or his or her veterinarian must report any positive Trichomoniasis diagnosis to NDA within five business days from knowledge of the formal diagnosis. 2. After knowledge of a formal diagnosis, the cattle producer will have 14 days to notify their neighbors of the diagnosis. Neighbor means adjacent landowners or land managers, with land capable of maintaining livestock susceptible to Trichomoniasis, even if cattle are not currently maintained on such owner’s or manager’s land. 3. The cattle producer must submit a completed Neighbor
Notification Form (found on the NDA website) to NDA within 14 days after the diagnosis. The form is to include the names of adjacent landowners and land managers who were notified and their contact information. “Trichomoniasis can be devastating to a herd, and while owners of affected herds generally don’t like to talk about it, communication allows other producers to reinforce good biosecurity measures,” said Dr. Hughes. For more information on the statute, producers can visit www.nda.nebraska.gov or call 800-572-2437.
