ere we are in Fall again, harvest season for many of us.

My Grandmother frequently said, “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get”. As a child, I often wondered what she meant. I now believe that she was trying to share with me…take your time and treasure each day.

Enjoy life, especially in your daily tasks. See the colors as our seasons change, take pleasure in weighing those heavy calves as you see last year’s genetic selections cross the scales, value the “smells and sounds of Fall”. Slow down, the faster you go, the more chance there is for mistakes and accidents. Please, please be careful while you toil in your daily activities, whether is in working of your cattle, gathering the bounty from your fields or traveling to school and community events.

I have just completed one of the busiest six weeks of preparation and activities for our Association in a long time. Our annual tour was August 2122nd. But the weeks prior to that were just as hectic as the two day tour. My tremendous thanks to Trevor Lienemann and Brett Weers, this year’s cochairs for the tour. They began with an initial organizational meeting in late February with a vision for success.

Four meetings and several months later, a tour with a memorable 75th Anniversary recognition celebration was held that makes me proud to be an Angus breeder in the our state. My appreciation also to all of the participants who put their breeding programs on display. Lots of work, sweat and dreams were available for viewing by all of our tour goers this year.

Tom Burke, Angus Historian provided a timely trip down memory lane pertaining to how the Angus breed arrived at today’s success. The national directors and our past state leaders were and are risk takers and more times than not, they made the right decisions and votes (often very close votes) to bring and keep Angus in the forefront. I wish you all could have been there to witness this. It definitely was one of the highlights of my tenure as

We held our Open Angus Show at the State Fair at the beginning of September. While it was somewhat disappointing that our first ever ROV show fell a few head shy of the needed cattle shown (we will be probationary status for next year’s show), the exhibitors still earned their points and we know we have some work cut out for us to get those ROV numbers back up where they need to be.

Thanks to all of our Nebraska Board members who traveled to Grand Island for the show and their help in running the show smoothly, as the first animal entered the show ring promptly at the 10 a.m. start time. I also appreciate it that you made the trip in order for us to hold our board meeting following the show.

Our late summer events concluded with our Husker Harvest Days exhibit Sept 15-17th. We had seven members exhibit cattle. As usual, the weather plays a big part of the show, last year it was excessive rain and this year we encountered heat, dust and wind. Visitor numbers through the tent were very good the first two days of the show and the final day was cooler and relaxing as we thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of our membership. See the HHD wrap-up on page 9.

Finally, mark your calendars for the Annual Meeting and Banquet on December 5th, in Kearney at the Holiday Inn. Watch our website and your membership newsletters for further details. Also check out our sale and events calendar for upcoming member production sales.

he great success of Angus producers from across the country was evidenced by the attendance, excitement, and enthusiasm of all participants at the 2015 Nebraska Angus Tour and 75th Anniversary celebration. This event highlighted the value of Nebraska Angus cattle and the prominence Nebraska producers have on the national stage, as well as the passion for which we engage in the industry. We also had terrific sponsorship participation from our industry affiliates; congratulations to them as well, and an extended thank you and appreciation for their involvement.

The annual, “Angus Means Business,” National Convention is very near in our future, and I encourage your attendance for the terrific educational opportunities, industry information, and the opportunity to share information and ideas with Angus breeders from across the nation. We will be conducting the annual meeting of the “The Business Breed” conducted by state elected voting delegates.

Please contact those delegates to make your opinions known to strengthen the character of our national association and to propagate what is best for the Angus breed improvement and membership as a whole.

At the State level, it seems like a whirlwind of Angus events have been completed in the very recent months with the Tour, ROV Angus Show(State Fair), and Husker Harvest Days displays. Nebraska Angus producers had a great year of successful Angus events. To complete the year of activities,

members are encouraged to attend the Annual meeting and banquet to be held in December. State business will be conducted and new board members and officers to be elected.

Dear Nebraska Angus friends,

t’s time to gear up for the 2015 Angus Means Business National Convention and Trade Show that will be held November 3rd through 5th at the Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park, Kansas. This event is a great opportunity for anyone in the beef industry; commercial cattlemen, feeders, and seedstock producers.

There will be an International Angus Genomics Symposium on Tuesday, November 3rd, that will offer insights into the latest genomic technology and its implication to our business.

On Wednesday, November 4th, the second annual Angus University will be held. The keynote speaker will be Ken Schmidt, the former director of communications for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. He is noted for his creative ideas in building a loyal and passionate customer base.

There will also be a series of speakers who will be presenting on the topic, “A Story of a Steak.”

The emphasis will be the importance of quality throughout the production chain that results in the final product on the plate. Also, there will be a sessions offered on a variety of pertinent topics for our industry.

Early registration is encouraged, as the hotels in the area are filling fast. So, if you can clear a few days in early November, I would highly recommend attendance at this stellar event in our industry.

t is amazing how fast time flies!

The Nebraska State Fair has come and gone, just a few shows are left to finish the 2014-2015 show season, and harvest will be starting.

This year the Nebraska Angus Tour celebrated its 75th anniversary while touring the Southeast part of Nebraska during August 21-22.

Twenty-four Angus breeders displayed cattle; 75 Angus breeders registered for the tour; and 200 Angus breeders gathered at the social hosted by the Lienemann family Friday evening. The 2015 Nebraska Angus Tour was a huge success with highquality cattle displayed and Angus enthusiasts joining together to celebrate seventy-five years. Tom Burke shared historical information in an entertaining and interactive manner. Although college activities prevented me from participating in the entire weekend, I did enjoy visiting with people at the Sisco and Hollman locations.

Nebraska Junior Angus Association was well represented at the Nebraska State Fair. First and foremost, I want to congratulate all Nebraska Junior Angus participants on an outstanding open show. Your hard work, commitment, and dedication were clearly evident in every animal shown.

Our annual Nebraska State Fair meeting was held on Sunday, September 6.

Members began the process of changing the officer application procedure by discussing the elimination of the slate. Further discussion will be held at the December meeting. Nebraska Junior Angus officers formed different committees for junior members to be involved in throughout the year.

Michaela Clowser declared her candidacy for the NJAA Board of Directors and will represent Nebraska at the 2015-2016 National Junior Angus Show.

The Nebraska Junior Angus Association will host the annual Winter Preview Show on December 6 in Kearney, Nebraska. Our annual junior meeting will be held on Saturday, December 5, following check-in. The jun-

ior fundraiser consisting of the semen auction will follow the Nebraska Angus Association’s annual banquet Saturday night. The show will be Sunday morning at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. Entry forms will be mailed or available on the Nebraska Junior Angus website. This show is a great opportunity to get calves out for their first show experience and for new members to mingle with others.

The members decided to move the Silent Auction to the Cattlemen’s Classic and will also be sponsoring an ice cream social. Both activities are viewed as fundraisers for the 2016 National Angus Show.

The 2016 National Junior Angus Show is approaching quickly. Please contact Jake Scott, one of our advisors, or me to join one of our many committees dedicated to organizing an awesome show in Grand Island! We would love your help!

These next few months will be filled with Angus breeders offering tremendous show prospects. I hope each one of you juniors find the PERFECT calf for next year’s show season.

This year’s Husker Harvest Days weather was in stark contrast to 2014. While rain was the big story of 2014, this year’s weather was hot, dry and windy. That didn’t seem to affect the number of visitors to our tent on Lot 1058.

Foot traffic was heavy for Tuesday and Wednesday. Slightly fewer visitors walked through the tent on Thursday but it was still a good day. A wide variety of cattle and bloodlines impressed the visitors to our tent. Members who displayed cattle were: Carl Dethlefs and Sons, Rockville; Dethlefs Angus Ranch at Ravenna and North Platte; E D Angus, Ashby; Hollman Angus, Hallam; Lazy Black Diamond Angus Ranch, Palmer; RCA Cattle Co. at Nebraska City; and Walters Angus, Talmage.

Dakota Lovett, Bladen, Neb., is a third-generation Angus producer. He is active in the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and considers it a gift to have grown up raising Angus cattle.

“The Angus breed continues to grow and we need more people who can talk about Angus,” Lovett says. “There is a need for people, like the ambassador, who will have a conversation about the Angus breed and the beef industry.”

Lovett, a freshman at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Neb., recently competed in the 2015 Angus Ambassador competition July 23 in Saint Joseph, Mo. Hosted by the NJAA, Lovett visited the American Angus Association® headquarters along with three other finalists and their families.

“These contestants are proof that there is a bright future for the Angus industry, and opportunities through the National Junior Angus Association have prepared them well to be advocates for the Angus breed,” says Kasey Brown, Angus Journal associate editor and one of this year’s judges.

Judging the competition, along with Brown, were Adam Conover, Association regional manager for Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas; Tom Burke, Association board member; Brian Pine, K-Coe Isom field analyst, and Corbitt Wall, DV Auctions.

To be considered for the position each junior member submitted a cover letter, résumé and two essay responses. The top candidates were invited to the American Angus Association, where they gave a 3-5 minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of questions.

Topics of presentations ranged from sustainability to Angus advocacy. Lovett’s presentation addressed the new dietary guidelines released in 2015 by the Health and Human Services (HHS) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). He discussed the potential problems the Angus industry could face due to the report’s recommendation that Americans eat less red and processed meat.

After the presentations, the judges selected Will Pohlman, Prairie Grove, Ark., as the 20152016 Angus Ambassador.

Pohlman is a student at the University of Arkansas double majoring in biochemistry and animal science. Joining Lovett as finalists were Haley Throne, Lexington, Ga., and Sierra Day, Cerro Gordo, Ill. Funded by the Angus Foundation, the 2015-2016 Angus

Nebraska Angus Tour Spotlight THE SOCIAL...

THE TOUR, A SUMMARY

The 2015 Nebraska Angus Tour goes in the books as one of the most successful tours in recent memory.

From the social the evening before the tour began, through the stops, the cattle, efforts from participants, the tour facilities, and everything in between… it was a wonderful and fun event.

Each stop was special, had something new and/or different, and the celebration of our 75 years as an association was memorable. Thanks to all who made our tour sensational. And of course the food was fabulous.

Tom Burke, Angus Historian presented a wonderful program of the history of Angus cattle, and the progression, the decisions that allowed the breed to grow. For example, the decision to allow registration of calves through the use of artificial insemination by Out of Herd Sires with the purchase of an A.I. service certificate; and the use of semen from bulls that are deceased. The decision to establish Certified Angus Beef and the subsequent decisions to keep “growing the brand”. Roger L. Peterson

Celebration of Life Services for Roger L. Peterson were held on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastors Paul Bauman and Murray Jones officiating.

Interment was in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege with military honors provided by the Martin Horn American Legion Post #66 of Holdrege in conjunction with the Unites States Navy Military Honors Team.

Roger Lee Peterson, 78 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Roger was born January 5, 1937 at the Holdrege Hospital, the second of three children born to Albert Roger and Hazel Evangeline (Brown) Peterson.

He was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Church, where he remained a life-long member. He received his primary education from District #72, northeast of Holdrege, through the third grade, and then transferred into Holdrege Public Schools, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class of 1955. He enjoyed playing football as tight-end and defensive end.

He felt it was a privilege to have been part of the 1954 undefeated Holdrege

Duster Football Team who brought home the Class B State Championship.

Following high school, Roger was inducted into the United States Navy, where he served his country for two years from 1956 and 1957. During his service, Roger tried out and was accepted into the Blue Jackets Choir.

Roger then returned home to Phelps County, where he was employed by Johnson Brother’s Construction for one winter before engaging in a diversified farming and cattle operation, called Sunny View Angus Farm east of Holdrege with his family.

On April 19, 1959, Roger was united in marriage to Violet Wallander of Loomis, Nebraska and to this union two children were born: a son, Kenton and a daughter, Darla. Besides his farming interest, Roger also enjoyed serving in many ways which included both church and community. He served on the Water Users Board of Directors at Tri-County, was a 4-H Leader, served on the Phelps County Extension Board, volunteered for six years on the R-7 School Board, where he served as Past President, served as a Director on the Phelps County Feeders, and also served on the board and was a Past President of the Nebraska Angus Association. Roger was a devoted member of the Trinity Church, where he served as a Deacon Director, Sunday School Superintendent, and Trustee, sang in the choir, and was a past chairman on the Board of Directors.

In his younger years, Roger also enjoyed deer hunting, loved to show Angus Cattle at various shows and fairs in the mid-west and remained an avid Husker Football Fan his entire

life. In 1986, Roger suffered an accident while riding a horse, which left him partially paralyzed. His positive outlook on life and faith in God never wavered. Roger was a true inspiration to all his family and friends and was always concerned about others before himself. Roger and Violet celebrated their 56th Wedding Anniversary this past April. He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Atlee and Mildred Wallander; and one brother-in-law, Delbert Wallander and his wife, Virginia.

Roger leaves to celebrate his life; his wife, Violet Peterson of Holdrege; two children: son, Kenton Peterson of Holdrege and daughter, Darla Aegerter and her husband, Jeff of Seward, Nebraska; one grandson, Kane Aegerter; two sisters: Kathryn Barker and her husband, Harlan of Holdrege, and Carolyn Fitch and her husband, Jerry of Commerce City, Colorado; brothersin-law and sisters-in-law: Bruce Wallander and his wife, Darlene of Bertrand and Robert Wallander and his wife, Mary of rural Loomis, Sharon Florom and her husband, Rodger of Kingwood, Texas and Carmen Stradal and her husband, Franklin of Holdrege, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been established in Roger’s honor and will be designated at a later date.

NJAA ANNOUNCES NEW AGE RULE FOR COMPETITION

Angus youth who are eight years old can now exhibit cattle at Angus-sponsored shows.

Eight-year-old members of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) are now eligible to show at Angus-sponsored competitions across the country. The new age rule, approved by the American Angus Association Board of Directors and the National Junior Angus Board (NJAB), takes effect Jan. 1, 2016.

“The recent change to age requirements will allow Angus juniors who are eight years old on Jan. 1 to be eligible to compete at our nationwide shows,” says Jaclyn Clark, Association director of events and education.

The NJAA sponsored more than 50 junior shows during the past year, involving nearly 5,000 Angus youth. According to the new rule, an exhibitor’s birthdate must fall between Jan. 1, 1995, and Dec. 31, 2007, to compete and be either a junior, regular or life member of the American Angus Association.

Major NJAA-sponsored competitions include the Mid-Atlantic Junior Angus Classic, Western Regional Junior Angus Show, Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show, Atlantic Nationals, Northwest Preview, the All-American Angus Breeders’ Futurity and the National Junior Angus Show.

However, the Association cannot guarantee this will occur at all upcoming events, depending on planning stages of the shows, and if there are questions, you should contact the show office directly.
