he theme for the Nebraska Angus Association the next few years could be titled“Looking Forward”. We have much to anticipate as an association.

As the 2014 National Angus Convention moves to Kansas City for the meeting, education and new Trade Show, we begin preparation to sponsor a booth at the trade show in the “Nebraska Pavilion” being organized by the Nebraska Dept of Agriculture, Director Greg Ibach and Jordan Schlake, Ag Promotion Coordinator within the Dept of Agriculture.

Our 75th Anniversary as an association will be celebrated in 2015 during the annual tour (Southeast region). Our original association charter was filed with the Nebraska Secretary of State office in September, 1940. If you have any suggestions or ideas to help make this a “one of a kind” recognition, please don’t hesitate to contact me. We have already started acknowledgement – giving thanks to and recognizing our Past Presidents of our association. At our annual banquet held last month we introduced those leaders who had joined us for the evening and also took a group photograph of them. We will plan to do this again at the 2014 banquet for those Presidents who couldn’t be with us this last December.

Preparation has begun for the National Junior Angus Show that Nebraska will host in 2016. Jake and Kami Scott from Gordon, are the chairman for the show. Our thanks and appreciation to Jake and Kami for stepping forward to lead this show. If you would like to work on any of the committees that they will be organizing, contact them at 308282-0140. Certainly with Jake and

Kami at the helm, that event will be a grand show. Tremendous thanks to Dick Hollman and his bid committee for submitting the successful bid.

Continuing to Look Forward, our sale season is just around the corner. Please check out our sale calendar on page 40. There are many production sales scheduled from late January to early April…all with top quality Angus bulls and some females too. Our state show and sale will be held on February 20th at the Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney. You can check out the sale consignments online at www.necattlemens.org. The show will start at 8:30 am (CT) and the sale is set for 12:30 pm (CT). Again, high quality bulls, bred females and show heifers will be there in Kearney.

Our 2014 annual tour will be held in the South Central region.

NAA President Dru Uden and South Director Brandon Meyer will be working on this event. Members or breeders in that region can expect to be contacted in the next few weeks regarding a planning meeting.

Most of all, I am eagerly Looking Forward to working with the officers and directors that you, the members have elected to lead this organization for the coming year.

You can see the photo of our upcoming Leadership team on page 8. My thanks to Clayton Glause who moves into the Past President role, for his leadership and advice this past year. Bickel – West, Brock Foxhoven – Northeast and Chris Fryzek – Commercial. Also leading their respective districts are: Dave Nichols – North Central – Kory Ostrand and Brandon Meyer – South.

These men, in their leadership roles bring vast and differing experiences and skills to their positions.

Some have grown up in the Angus seedstock business - they are 2nd and 3rd generation Angus breeders.

Others are like me, are relative newcomers to the Angus breed. Several are active and hold leadership offices in other livestock and Agricultural organizations, for instance Sandhills Cattle Association, and Nebraska Cattlemen. They have invested much time, energy and have the will to “learn more”. To borrow a motto from the national 4-H program, they want to learn more about “How the make the best (the Angus breed) better”. They have been par-

ticipants in the LEAD program, Beef Leaders Institute, and other training programs. They bring skills and knowledge of livestock evaluation and judging, marketing, accounting and banking industry to the table when making decisions. They will lead our association admirably in the coming year.

Lastly, but certainly not least, my congratulations to this year’s Producer of the Year and Pioneer Angus Award winners. These individuals, years ago, had the ability to “Look Forward” and see the greatness that is the Angus breed of cattle. The Otha Lovitt family was recognized for his early contributions in establishing the Angus breed here in Nebraska. You can learn more about Otha’s contributions on page 26. Lori Wagner, owner of Sonderup Angus at Genoa, was, in her own words “shocked” to learn she was named 2013 Nebraska

Angus Producer of the Year. Read Lori’s story on page 22. Her contributions as a Mom, wife, Angus Breeder and Breed association leader are many. I am honored to call her my friend and Nebraska Angus Producer of the Year. Yes I am “Looking Forward” to much success for our members, our association and our Angus breed in 2014, and beyond.

Angus friends and colleagues,

he bull sale months are almost upon us again and all of us from the northern border to the southern state line are looking forward to having a prosperous year. In recent years we've seen drastic highs and lows and I know most of us would be grateful for some middle ground and a little more peace of mind, but such is the nature of our business. We are the ones at the tip of the sword, breaking new ground in the beef industry time and time again. Our great state registered 22,570 head with the American Angus Association in 2013, ranking us number two in the country.

I am proud to count myself among the ranks of Nebraska cattlemen and I am honored to

have the opportunity to serve as president of the Nebraska Angus Association. Angus has always been my life and as a third generation breeder both paternally and maternally, I will strive to do justice to the office I have been given.

irst of all, I would like to thank all of the Nebraska delegates that attended the annual meeting in Louisville last November. It is very important that we take the selection of the American Angus Association leadership seriously. For most of our Nebraska members, the Angus business is a source of their livelihood, so decisions made at the national level can directly affect them.

Our breed has reached its position in the beef cattle industry for lots of reason, but mostly due to breeders like yourselves.

The willingness of Angus breeders to make independent breeding decisions has resulted in breed improvements unparalleled by other breeds.

Congratulations to the Pioneer and Producer of the Year Award winners at the recent Nebraska Angus Association annual meeting and banquet. It was great seeing a good turnout at the annual meeting. Many thanks to Suzy Hebbert for all she does for our Nebraska Angus Association.

he first weekend of December was full of Nebraska Angus Activities!

Many juniors attended the Annual Banquet Friday night, in Kearney where they got to hear inspirational Nebraska Angus stories and interact with Angus leaders from around the state.

Additionally, we held our annual fundraiser at the banquet and raised over $4,500 to help our Nebraska Junior Angus Association (NeJAA) operate in the coming year. We would like to thank all of those who donated to and made purchases at the auction. Thanks to all of your generous support we will be able to provide more opportunities for our members to grow and develop as young people and leaders in the agricultural industry.

In addition to the Annual Banquet, Saturday we had our December meeting and Sunday was the Winter Preview Show.

One highlight of the meeting was the initiation of a NeJAA mentoring program. Anyone interested in being a mentor/mentee should contact Cheyann Lovett (contact info: cheyannlovett@gmail.com – 402 460-0663) as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, due to weather and school conflicts we were unable to have a National Junior Angus Board member present.

However, we are looking to reschedule the “Green Coats Coast-Coast” program for Nebraska. Despite the weather the show was a great success. We had almost 50 pre-entries and the show was a fantastic event for new members to gain expe-

rience and for tenured members to be able to show their calves for the first time of the upcoming show season.

Our next meeting will take place Saturday, February 22, at the Cattlemen’s Classic in Kearney, Nebraska. This meeting will be critical for juniors to attend. We currently have multiple very qualified and deserving individuals wanting to run for the National Junior Angus Board in 2014. Since each state is only allowed one candidate we as a junior association will have to vote on which candidate will run for Nebraska.

Due to application deadlines this vote has to take place at the Classic meeting. Therefore I strongly encourage all NeJAA members (for at least one year) to attend and help in this important process.

ANGUS OFFERS INTERNSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES DEADLINE TO SUBMIT APPLICATION IS FEB. 5, 2014.

The American Angus Association® and its entities strive to provide students with opportunities to benefit themselves and the future of the cattle business. With paid internships and scholarship programs, the Association provides a chance for students to gain real-world knowledge and experience in the cattle industry, as well as financial support to further the education of undergraduate and graduate students passionate about beef and Angus cattle.

Deadlines and details for each internship and scholarship are listed below.

Angus Internships

The American Angus Association Activities and Events Department is offering an internship focused on event planning to a college sophomore, junior or senior who has an interest in agriculture. The internship will provide a highly organized, detail-oriented college student the opportunity to gain experience planning

and implementing educational and social events for the Association membership.

The qualified candidate should be available to start the position on or before June 1, 2014. Some travel is likely.

The American Angus Association Communications and Public Relations Department is accepting applications from college juniors or seniors studying journalism, agricultural communications or related fields. Applicants should have strong writing and design skills, in addition to having completed coursework in news and feature writing, editing and design. Experience in photography, video and social media is an asset in this fast-paced internship. The internship spans from approximately late-May to mid-August, with specific starting and ending dates depending on the applicant’s availability.

The internship will be flexible enough to tailor to the strengths and needs of the intern, but many duties can be expected. The internship spans from lateMay to mid-August; specific starting and ending dates will be negotiated with the selected candidate.

the qualifications for the Angus Foundation’s 2014 Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship Programs will be considered by the Angus Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee. As in past years, other specific and special criteria scholarships administered by the Angus Foundation will also be available. Certified Angus Beef’s (CAB) Colvin Scholarship Fund will award six or more scholarships in 2014 totaling at least $20,000.

The funds will be split among five undergraduate scholarships — in the amounts of $5,000, $4,000, $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 — and a $5,000 graduate-level scholarship.

College juniors and seniors who have shown commitment to the beef industry, either through coursework or activities, are encouraged to apply by the Dec. 6, 2013, deadline. Applications are evaluated on involvement, scholastic achievement, communication skills and reference letters. The graduate-level scholarship will be awarded to a full-time master’s or doctorate student conducting research related to high-quality beef production. Applications for that award are due Jan. 10, 2014.

American Angus News Angus Heritage Foundation Welcomes New Inductees

Four breed leaders honored during the Annual Awards Banquet in Louisville, Ky. The Angus business is centered on the individuals and their families who continue to dedicate their lives to the Angus legacy. To honor leaders involved with the Association’s history and shaping it’s future, each year the Association inducts members into the Angus Heritage Foundation. Four new additions were recognized Nov. 18 during the Association’s Annual Awards Banquet in Louisville, Ky. The 2013 inductees are: James Rentz, Coldwater, Ohio; John L. Schurr, Farnam, Neb.; Brian Halverson, Baker, Minn.; and the late Woodrow Wilson King, Rock Falls Ill. Each inductee or a family representative received a framed Angus Heritage Foundation certificate and their names will be engraved on the Heritage Foundation plaque displayed in the library of the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. Photos and biographies will be included in the next edition of the Angus Heritage Foundation booklet. Read more about the 2013 inductees in the paragraphs that follow.

John L. Schurr

John L. Schurr of Farnam, Neb., has been raising Angus cattle in central Nebraska for more than 50 years. He started in the purebred Angus business in 1962 with his brother, Jerry.

Together, they founded Schurrtop Angus and Charolais Ranch in their hometown near Farnam.

Today, John and his wife, Kay, together with their sons, Marty and Ryan, continue to be committed to improving and advancing the Angus breed.

The Schurr family’s third son, Wayne, was also an integral part of the operation before his passing in 2011.

A firm believer in performance testing, Schurrtop Angus is a pioneer in the Angus industry as one of the first producers to catalog genetics with (AHIR®), test carcass merit using the USDA carcass evaluation tags, and conduct ultrasounds for carcass traits. Collecting data, and then making informed breeding decisions based on that information, has been a core mission for Schurrtop Angus and Charolais Ranch over the years. The operation continues to focus on multi-trait selection for their commercial customers.

John served two terms on the American Angus Association

Board of Directors, and was also a member of the Angus Foundation and Certified Angus Beef LLC entity boards.

A former director of Farm Credit Services, John is active in the community and has been a board member of his church and local school board, is a past director of the Nebraska Angus Association, and was a 4-H club leader for 35 years. In 2010, John and his family were recognized as the Nebraska Angus Association Producer of the Year.

Others inducted the Angus Heritage Hall of Fame this year include: James Rentz of Creekside Farms, Ohio; Brian Halverson of Baker, Minnesota, and Woodrow Wilson King, Sr. of Illinois was inducted posthumously.

December 2013 marks the third calibration release for the HD 50K prediction since Febru-

ary 2011. These events are necessary periodically to recalibrate, or retrain, the marker effects associated with the HD 50K prediction included in the American Angus Association ® genomic-enhanced EPDs. JUNIORS WITH NEBRASKA TIES EARN BRONZE AND SILVER AWARDS The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors.

Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.

The NJAA promotes the involvement of young people in raising Angus cattle, while also providing leadership and selfdevelopment opportunities for the nearly 6,000 active members nationwide.

Taylor Nichols Earns Junior Bronze & Silver Awards Taylor Nichols, Chambers, Neb., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Upperman, junior activities director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. “BLI allows our members to experience first-hand the entire beef production chain, and better understand how their quality Angus cattle contribute to the industry as a whole,” says Robin Ruff, Association director of events, activities and education.

“This opportunity really helped me recalibrate my focus on the beef industry, and look at it from a more holistic manner,” said Rhonda Wulf, a 2013 BLI participant from Morris, Minn. “I would encourage others to apply, just for that chance to see the industry on a broader level, to get out of their comfort zone, broaden their mind, and to go back to work with a new energy.”

During the three-day event, BLI participants are able to tour a beef harvesting and packing facility, retailer, fabricator, feedlots and other industry segments, including the Association. The Association provides transportation, lodging,
