Lundgren Angus Ranch 24th Annual "Dollars" and "Sense" Production Sale
Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ,
Dear Fellow Cattle Producers:
Larry Lundgren 785-673-9047
laranch@ruraltel.net
blake@lundgrenangusranch.com
Welcome to the LAR annual “Dollars & Sense” bull and female sale. Although it has been extremely dry in our area, our cowherd showed their bred -in ability to adjust to any kind of adverse conditions. They came through the dry, 110 degree heat with very good body condition going into winter, and raised this nice offering for our sale, February 17, 2023.
We would like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to join us on Friday, February 21st, as we host our 24th Annual “Dollars” and “Sense” production sale at our ranch south of Gove. We have an exciting line up again this year with some new sires represented, which we believe offer some tremendous genetic breeding value.
Our multi-trait selection has focused on moderate framed, thick, easy fleshing cows with strong maternal traits, including good udders and feet, and has remained unchanged through the years. Our Lord created “kind after kind” and our cowherd reflects that principle. It is very satisfying to see our customers send us pictures of their uniform set of calves or yearlings going through a sale ring or pasture pictures of their excellent results using LAR bulls. The offering this year has been handled in the same manner as in the past with soundness and longevity the goal of our development program.
Our motto, “It makes SENSE to invest your DOLLARS in LAR GENETICS ”, still holds true as value received for dollars invested is at a high level at LAR. Our cattle sell at very affordable prices year after year. Along with that, we are adding an exciting feature this year, so we direct your attention to the bottom of this page. We simply feel a little R&R is needed at times and this is a way we can have a little extra time with customers and have LOTS OF FUN along the way.
As I sit down to pen this letter, the cattle business is experiencing some historic times. Recent fat cattle markets have resulted in steer prices exceeding the $200/cwt mark for the first time ever. The combination of very strong consumer demand, both domestically and internationally, and a national cow herd that has not been this small in decades has resulted in elevated prices across the industry. Although these historically high prices will not remain in place forever, the cow/calf producer is in a position to see very strong prices for the foreseeable future. Although significant and widespread drought has been partially responsible for this extreme reduction on the supply side, I think it is important to recognize that the demand for high quality U.S. beef has never been stronger. Certified Angus Beef has been a driving force in changing the mindset of the consumer when it comes to quality and when Wal-Mart began offering Choice grade beef in their grocery stores, the whole game changed. Today, the consumer is demanding high-grading beef and remains willing to pay higher prices due to the consistent eating experience they are receiving. This is where WE come in and why the utilization of Angus genetics in your breeding program is so important – it is the high marbling and quality beef that Angus genetics are known for that has aided in building this strong demand and loyalty of consumers to high quality beef.
We thank you for your interest in our program and if you we can be of any assistance, please don ’t hesitate to contact us. Hope to see you on the 17 th!
At Lundgren Angus Ranch, we are focused on breeding cattle that can be utilized to further advance the quality and consistent beef products that we are putting on the dinner tables of consumers across the globe. As you study this year’s sale offering, you will find cattle with balanced traits across the board. You will also notice numerous lots that qualify for the “Targeting the Brand” campaign that the American Angus Association and Certified Angus Beef are promoting – simply identifying the cattle with the genetics that have the highest probability of reaching the CAB specifications.
Our advertising campaign this year is “The cat may not be out of the bag…but word is getting out about the value found in LAR genetics!”. For those of you who have been utilizing LAR genetics for years, we thank you and appreciate your continued support. For those who may be new to our program, we welcome you and encourage you to reach out and ask any questions to learn more about our program. We have committed ourselves to building better beef through analyzing data, genomics testing, individual feed intake testing and focusing on the end product. This includes our involvement in high level conversations on the development of supply chains of known genetic cattle to major retail customers here in the U.S., with the intent to provide LAR genetic customers additional marketing opportunities and greater value. We believe that through these efforts, “word will continue to get out about the value found at LAR.”
Please plan to join us in person on Friday, February 21st, but if you can’t, the sale will be broadcast live over the internet on CCI.live (see page 6 in this sale book for instructions). We wish all of you a prosperous and blessed 2025 and remember IT MAKES SENSE TO INVEST YOUR DOLLARS IN LAR GENETICS!
“Dollars” & “Sense” Production
AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION SELECTION TOOLS
Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. Accuracy will range from 0 to 1 with an accuracy closer to 1.0 indicating higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the amount of information that is included in the analysis including individual genotype and performance records as well as number of progeny and ancestral records.
PRODUCTION
Calving Ease Direct (CED), expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for post-weaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.
Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference in transmitting ability for feed intake during the post-weaning phase, compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Height (YH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height compared to that of other sires.
Scrotal Circumference (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
MANAGEMENT
Claw Set (Claw), expressed in units of claw-set score, a lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced toes compared to another sire.
Foot Angle (Angle), expressed in units of foot-angle score, a lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with an angle closer to 45 degrees at the pastern and appropriate toe length and heel depth compared to another sire.
Docility (DOC), expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in a sire’s offspring compared to another sire.
Pulmonary Arterial Pressure EPD (PAP), expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score to decrease the risk of progeny contracting high altitude disease most commonly experienced at 5,500 ft or greater in elevation.
Hair Shed EPD (HS), expressed in units of hair shed score, with a lower EPD being more favorable. This indicates a sire should produce progeny who shed their winter coat earlier in the spring and has improved environmental adaptability in heat stressed areas and grazing endophyte-infected (hot) fescue.
MATERNAL
Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk (Milk), expressed in pounds of calf weaned, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters. In other words, it is the part of the calf’s weaning weight attributes to milk and mothering ability.
Mature Weight (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.
Mature Height (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.
CARCASS
Carcass Weight (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat) expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
$VALUE INDEXES
$Value Indexes, expressed in dollars per head, are multi-trait selection indexes where a higher value suggests more profit. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.
Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning by decreasing mature cow size and improving docility, foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny pre-weaning performance from birth to weaning.
Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year with a larger value being more favorable. It assesses differences in cow energy requirements, due to maternal milk and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning feedlot merit (growth and feed efficiency) compared to progeny of other sires assuming producers retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell on a carcass-weight basis.
Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average differences in the progeny post-weaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot and sell on a carcass merit grid.
Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.
RED ANGUS GUIDE TO EPDS
ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).
HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).
GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).
CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)
BW Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)
YW ........ Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value)
ADG Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value)
DMI Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value)
MILK Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value)
ME ........ Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. (Mcal per Month/Low Value)
HPG Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. (Percent/High Value)
CEM ...... Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value)
STAY Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value)
MARB Marbling predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. (Marbling Score Units/High Value)
YG Yield Grade predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade, which is calculated using CW, REA and Fat. (Yield Grade Units/Low Value)
CW Carcass Weight predicts differences in actual hot carcass weight. (Pounds/High Value)
REA ....... Ribeye Area predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib.(Square Inches/High Value)
FAT Fat predicts differences in the depth of backfat measured between the 12th and 13th ribs. (Inches/Low Value)

WITH ALL THE TRAITS AND ALL THE DATA - WHAT IF YOU COULD SIMPLY LOOK AT ONE NUMBER AND GET AN ANSWER!!
In today's cattle business, it's easy for producers to get overwhelmed with the large volumes of data. But for the average commercial producer, there has to be an easier way - and we think we found it in $Profit.
How $Pr ofi Wor ks:
The $Profit model takes into account the effects of both income and expenses to help determine the ultimate value contribution an individual animal can make to an operation. The results are published in multiple indexes, including $Profit (overall profitability), $Ranch (cowherd efficiency), F:G (feed to gain) and Fertility, all of which are printed in this catalog. The model assumes the average commercial bull will sire 100 progeny in his lifetime. The model also assumes 30% of the heifers will be kept as replacements and the balance of the calf crop the producer will retain ownership on to harvest and market on a value based grid. Even though many producers sell calves at weaning, cattle with predictable post-weaning performance and carcass quality can see increased value even when being sold as calves. Because this is a multi-breed analysis, it allows for any two bulls to be made comparable to one another (unlike comparing same traits published by different breed associations). Here is how $Profit differences can impact your bottom -line:
Good Bull
$10,000 $Profit
Top 50% of Angus breed
Better Bull
$15,000 $Profit
Top 25% of Angus breed
Top Tier Bull
$22,500 $Profit
Top 5% of Angus breed
Top Tier Bull exceeds Good Bull by $12,500 ($125/head over 100 calves)
Top Tier Bull exceeds Better Bull by $7,500 ($75/head over 100 calves) Better Bull exceeds Good Bull by $5,000 ($50/head over 100 calves)
Pictured to the left are the individual feed intake bunks where feed efficiency data is collected. This data is then computed through the $Profit system and generates a F:G index. This index is reported in a range from –0.50 to +0.50, with negative being most efficient to positive being least efficient. This data will assist in managing the largest expense in the beef business - feed!
At Lundgren Angus Ranch, we want to be an asset to our customers and aide them in not only meeting their breeding goals, but to help provide the tools to do so in a profitable manner. We are committing our resources to collect information such as genomics data, performance data and individual feed intake and efficiency data - all because we believe this data will help assist in making good genetic selections for your herd. If we can assist in any way, please contact us.
We believe this information can assist our customers in getting on the right path - the path to profitability!

We are kicking off this year’s Red Angus bulls with an absolute stud! Bieber Blue Chip is a new sire at LAR and we are really impressed with the phenotype this sire group exhibits. Not often do you find a bull that excels across the board in all categories, but when evaluating this calf’s data, you will find something quite unique. He ranks in the top 1% of the entire Red Angus breed for not one, not two but all three of the indexes. Looking to add a next generation Red Angus herd sire to your operation? You just might have found him!

This is the first of 3 ET flush brothers selling and what an opportunity you have here. The donor dam of these bulls is the MGD of the LARR Paycheck bull that was purchased by Bieber Red Angus as our high selling bull in 2021. This cow family has had a tremendous influence on our herd and this mating with Blue Chip hit it out of the park. We believe you will appreciate the natural thickness and muscling found in this group of full brothers.
Here is another full brother to lots 14 and 15. Keep all three of these flush brothers together and see if you can tell which one has the best calves in the weaning pen!
The next two bulls are also the result of our increased ET work in recent years and their donor dam is none other than the full sister to LARR Paycheck 0728. Bieber Red Angus has had tremendous success with this sire over the past couple of years and there are several sons being promoted by semen companies and other sons in top Red Angus seedstock herds across the country. This Value-Added son is built a lot like the Paycheck bull himself – deep bodied and tremendous muscle expression in his rear quarter. We believe there is tremendous breeding value in this combination.

We devote extra time to collect maternal traits beyond those required to target greater performance and predictability. Our goal is to not only improve today’s genetics, but also prepare for the future of the Angus breed.
Raising quality registered Angus cattle takes commitment and as your genetic supplier, we take that commitment seriously. That is why we believe a commitment to improvement starts with the female. Commit to the female — commit to MaternalPlus®.
