25th Anniversary Performance Bull and Female Sale
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to our 25th Annual Production Sale, I would like to thank you for your interest and support si nce we began breeding Simmentals in 1990. Because of your inspiration for us to develop quality cattle to improve your operations, I have enjoyed every minute of our breeding adventure! Our original goal was to raise Simmentals with high performance and eye appeal, and now we also focus on calving ease and high carcass traits, due to the focus on API and TI of many of our commercial customers. In order to do this, we constantly are on the look for new genetics that will meet our customers needs. We use AI and embryo transfer to help us achieve these goals.
The purchase of the US semen rights on R Plus Yuma 9087G after he was sold to LaBatte Simmentals and Circle 7 Ranch for $150,000 was a big step to bring in new genetics. His offspring are high performance with extra length needed for the pounds we are looking for. When the R Plus Simmentals held their dispersal sale in December of 2023, his dam was lot one and we were fortunate to be able to purchase her and put her into our embryo production program, where she has done very well. Lots 1 and 2 are full brothers to R Plus Yuma 9087G.
One other cow that will have a big impact on future sales is HHS Georgia 802G, she does amazing in transplant, averaging 23 frozen embryos in 20 flushes, her last freeze was 59 embryos out of RF Caliber 014G.
We thought we were going to be extremely dry when April started, but the May rains came and resulted in some seeding delays, with abundant pastures and hay crop and very good fall crops also. The lush pastures may have held back the bull calves gains a bit, but they are coming on strong once they hit the feed lot. They are on a ration of 8 pounds of corn/distillers, 20 pounds of corn silage, 6 pounds of chopped alfalfa and free choice grass hay. Great for growth, longevity and strong feet development.
The entire calf crop is on the American Simmental Association Calf Crop Genomics program, with DNA testing using the GGP-LD Genomics test, it verifies parentage and gives us genomically enhanced EPD’s that are similar to an animal that has 10 - 25 progeny for calving ease, weaning and yearling weight and 22 birth weight measurements, improving the accuracy of the EPD’s you are looking for. We also have them test to see if they are homozygous or heterozygous for color, the polled gene and dilution. Our cow herd has gone through the Cow DNA Roundup program to verify parentage and improve accuracy. We also participate in the ASA Total Herd Enrollment program which improves accuracy. In the past we have been awarded the Performance Advocate award to these measurements.
All bulls and heifers will have had ultrasound measurements for rib eye size, marbling and backfat, and this data will be available on line and at the sale. The bulls will be semen tested with scrotal measurements. Be sure to register with DVAuction early if you are interested in viewing and bidding with this method.

Haul your bulls home sale day and receive a $100 per head discount. Free delivery within North Dakota or 250 mile radius if delivered by April 15. Bull delivery begins approximately April 1. We do not deliver heifers, please make arrangements to haul heifers to your ranch soon after the sale.

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and – 5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units).
Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in o ther words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring achieving a docile (1) score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several d ecades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI : First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the population.
