Dear Cattle Producer, Hopefully, you had a good year in 2013. We are happy to say we had a nice hay crop and cattle prices were good enough we even decided to sell a couple hundred steers this fall. The bulls are on chopped hay and CHS bull challenger pellets. They get roughly 13 lbs per day of pellets. We like bull challenger because of the added minerals and it is a well balanced feed. Pictured above: Tom and Kathy with their 11 grandkids. Many know what our program values in a cow herd: Kenneth, Stephen, Daniel, Korina, Nathan, Zachary, Aaron, Naomi, maternal, carcass, and growth. I hope every one can Samantha, Rebecca & Luke (June 2013) become as happy with their cow herd as I am with mine. The commercial females we run are mainly SimAngusTM and they are some of the best looking commercials we have had on this place. Hopefully, we have a good summer because I would hate to sell them if we don’t have enough grass. This will be the last year for NLC Rolex 102R. He has been our growth bull for so long it will be hard to replace him. Our Merit bull continues to excel in many areas. The carcass data on his daughters is phenomenal. They are yielding 1s & 2s and almost 100% choice. The steer calves have a harder time getting to choice. My opinion is that they just grow too fast and don’t put any of that into marbling. We put our few head of Angus cows with Merit and are really happy with the results. Two of those calves are in the sale and we kept most of the females as replacements. We have quite a few new herd bulls calving this spring so it will be interesting to see how they do. On the family side of things, we welcomed our third daughter, Stacey, home for a few weeks. She lives in Australia with her two kids. The addition of two new grandkids has gotten us closer to that dozen mark. The boys are still working for us and we have two grandsons showing cattle now. Lunch will be provided by B&B catering out of Stanford. They do a wonderful job and we look forward to working with them. Coffee and rolls will be available all day. We toured this cow around on the show ring for a few years and she just keeps getting better. She tempers down the growth to make an easier calving bull with a lot of power.

This bull will be one to watch. Out of a high maternal cow and supporting indexes and EPD numbers that challenge Lot 15.

Please note this bull’s IMF is higher that Lot 101’s number but a lower ratio. The commercial bulls were in their own group and all did extremely well on their IMF. You can see that Angus inﬂuence in these bulls.

These two bulls may have been bred by our neighbors Angus bull. We are trying to get the parentage veriﬁed for both bulls. We put both bulls in the catalog with the sire we thought they were bred by. We based that on the look of the bulls. Lot 104 has a more Angus look with short ears and face. Lot 105 has a more Simmental look. As soon as we hear we will put any updates on the two bulls on the website. Both are really good looking bulls that weighted up well at weaning and should make great calves.

EPD TERMS & ABBREVIATIONS Breed averages can be used as a benchmark to determine where an animal ranks within the breed as well as whether or not an animal’s offspring will be suitable for a given set of environmental conditions. Calving Ease (CE): The average difference of unassisted births when used on heifers. A higher value indicates greater calving ease. Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s offspring. Expressed in pounds of birth weight. Used primarily as an indicator of calving ease. Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s offspring. Expressed in pound at weaning. Does not account for variance in WW that are due to milk. Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the average difference in an animal’s progeny. Expressed in pounds at one year of age. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): The average ease of a bull’s first-calving daughters compared to daughters of a different sire. Milk (MILK): Expressed as pounds of calf weaned and reflect the avg. difference due to the milking ability of a bull’s daughters. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Expressed as pounds of calf weaned. Account for avg. differences from both WW direct as well as from milk, and measure a sire’s ability to transmit milk production and growth rate through his daughters. CARCASS EPDs Carcass Weight (CW): Estimate average differences in carcass weight at a given age endpoint. Yield Grade (YG): In an effort to apply the same scale the industry uses in quantifying meat yield Percent Retail Cuts EPD is now expressed as an YG EPD. As with all EPDs, YG EPD is expressed as a deviation. Unlike its predecessor, however, negative values are desirable. To use it, keep in mind that it is in yield grade units. Therefore, lower is better. For example, a bull with a .33 YG EPD would be expected to sire offspring that are a 1/3 of a yield grade better (lower) than a 0.0 YG EPD bull. If bulls with a zero EPD for Yield Grade sired an average yield of 3.0 in a particular environment and management system, offspring of a -.33 bull would be expected to have an average yield grade of 2.67 (1/3 of a yield grade better/lower). Marbling (MARB): The average difference in USDA Quality Grade in a bull’s progeny at a given endpoint. A numerical marbling score where one point equals one USDA marbling score. Ribeye Area (RIB): The average difference in ribeye area in a bull’s progeny at a given endpoint. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire Ultra-sound Data Table scenario. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth in compared to another.
