We hope you have all had time to recover from last winters blizzards and challenges that present with them in the ranching industry. During those months of storm after storm we were sending thoughts and prayers out for all ranchers and their livestock. Thankfully it brought great moisture and we hope you all have great hay crops, as well as full creeks and dams!

What’s new here at Wicks Cattle:

GENOMICS: Genomic enhanced EPD’s with all cattle having 100K testing and verified parentage.

SEMEN TESTING: All bulls are semen tested just prior to sale day and will be ready to go.

A LATER SALE DATE: After much consideration a later sale date worked better for us. We feel it give us time to really go through the bulls and only put the best of the best in the sale. The genetic testing and semen testing are important factors in getting to the top of the pen. Another benefit to a later sale is that the bulls that you see are more mature and developed than a younger bull.

MATERNAL SIDE: We have always raised our females, but have added new genetics. We strive for a moderate framed cow with good udders, feet and a strong maternal instinct. We take great pride in our home raised cow herd.

IMPROVED HERD SIRES: We have put a lot of time, effort and money into searching out the best of both AI sires and our personal herd sires. We decided to take advantage of all the wonderful technological tools that are available to cattlemen and working with planned parentage of each female. This has been very exciting for us and hope to pass on the rewards of this research to you and the bulls you purchase from us. If you are not successful, we are not successful.

FUTURE WEDDING!! Our oldest daughter, Josie, is engaged and getting married to Shane Forster of New Salem. He is a rancher/farmer in that area and she is an RN and works in Bismarck. We welcome Shane to the family! He purchased a red SimAngus heifer two years ago from us at the North Dakota Simmental Sale and she produced a bull calf that year and another this year Lot 29.

Our bull calves have all had their series of Bovine Rhinotracheitis-Parainfluenza 3 Respiratory Syncytial virus – Mannheimia Haemolytica – Pasturerella Mult Clostridium Chauvoei-Septicum NovyiSordelli-Perfringens Type C & D – Haemophilus Somnus Bacterin Toxoid. They are also vaccinated for wart virus.

We will have a brand inspector, veterinarian and insurance agent at our sale barn on sale day. We welcome you to take your bull home the day of the sale.

ALL WICKS CATTLE bulls have had tissue samples collected for 100k through the American Simmental Association with Neogen. The 100k tests for parentage and coat color as well as many genetic conditions and enhanced genomic EPD’s. The bulls have correlating ASA registration numbers and EPD’s. The EPD’s were as of March 25, 2024. All bulls are freeze branded with their tattoo number.

BREEDING GUARANTEE: Bulls that sell for $4,000 or more are guaranteed for breeding soundness for the first season through September 1, 2024. If a problem occurs, contact Wicks Cattle immediately and a replacement will be furnished. All claims must be submitted by September 1, 2024. Bulls will be semen check prior to the sale on May 1, 2024. The buyer assumes full liability of death or injury to his or her animal following the sale. We encourage all buyers to obtain insurance for their animal purchases. Insurance will be available the day of the sale.

BRAND INSPECTION: A brand inspector will be available on Sale Day.

RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST: Wicks Cattle is retaining 1/3 interest share in every bull selling in this sale. Full possession and full salvage value sell with the bull.

DELIVERY OF THE BULLS: Delivery of bulls will begin the day after the sale. Free delivery up to 200 miles is provided by us. Any mileage beyond 200 miles, we will work with the buyers.

BRED HEIFERS: We would like buyers of the heifers to take them as soon as possible. Buyer is responsible for transportation of the heifers. We will work with the buyer.

CATTLE HEALTH: All of the bulls received a full vaccination program recommended by TK Veterinary Service of Glen Ullin, including Alpha C/D and Clostridium Perfigen type A at birth; Bovi-Shield Gold One Shot and Vision7/Somnus at branding on May 15, 2023; Vision 7/Somnus Bovillis Coronavirus and Vista Once SQ at preweaning on August 24, 2023 and Vista Once SQ, Somubac, Bovillis Coronavirus and Wart vaccine at weaning on October 6, 2023.

The Fall bulls were given the same protocol as the above spring calves. They were given the same shots on November 10, 2022. The pre weaning shots were given April 12, 2023. The calves were weaned on May 10, 2023. They will be poured with Clean Up and scrotal measured on April 10, 2024. They will have a foot-rot shot prior to sale when semen testing.

WAR CRY is a bull that we located at Kearns Cattle Company near Rushville, NE. We went there in search of a purebred Simmental bull. Once we started going through the pens there was one bull, a halfblood, that persistently stood out among the rest. War Cry has a way of moving that is fluent and agile, he is extremely sound with great structure and a unique presence to him. He has great neck extension and is smooth shouldered. He is big topped, big ribbed and carries a massive hip. We could not pass him up. We have a lot of confidence in this bull as Kearns also did, using him extensively on both heifers and cows. He stamps his progeny as consistent as any bull we have ever used. We have used him with great success on first calf heifers.

We named this guy Rip as a baby calf because he had a lot of vigor and muscle. The name has stuck. He WW ratio is 127, and YW ratio is 109.

This bull is out of a really good proven cow that cranks them out every year. Quiet, good disposition bull and is very versatile on either red or black cows.

Here is a real dandy. Very quiet demeanor with nice even set of numbers.
